The VW BlueSport may or may not ever go to production. Because it requires a new platform, and because it is a niche vehicle, Volkswagen is calling the BlueSport—newly debuted at the Detroit Auto Show—a concept car. A compact Roadster, the BlueSport features a 180 horsepower turbo-diesel engine that gets an impressive 55 MPG and emits very little carbon.
The future of driving and the future of Volkswagen belong to a car like this,” said Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Volkswagen Group chief executive. In truth, Volkswagen only sold about 30,900 compact roadsters to Americans in 2008, so VW is holding a finger to the wind before committing to building the BlueSport for American consumption. If the little roadster goes to production, the BlueSport will likely come with a sticker price higher than a Pontiac Solstice ($30,000) but lower than a Porsche Boxster ($46,000).
