Although Congress made quite a show of negatively comparing U.S. automakers to Japanese makers back in December, the truth is, no one is doing all that well when it comes to selling cars in America. Even Toyota has recently announced it will be offering more cash incentives in an effort to attract American consumers who have, for the time being, locked up what money they have left and are avoiding all dealerships, not just the Big Three.
“The shift that you’ll see in January from December is more consumer cash and less APR and lease support through our dealers,” said Toyota Motor Sales USA President Jim Lentz. Speaking about falling gas prices, Lentz said “we saw not only hybrids, but we saw subcompacts and compact cars also fall as a result of that.” In other words, people aren’t buying big cars because of fear of high gas prices, but they aren’t buying small cars and hybrids either, because at this moment, gas prices are low. For customers who can afford it, now looks like a great time to pick up a Prius and get some cash back in the bargain.
