There are many specified places throughout Europe which are either totally vehicle free or at least have restrictions on vehicles at particular times. And now Times Square in New York will follow their example. The Department of Transportation has announced a plan to make Times Square and Herald Square on Broadway more of a pedestrian plaza by forbidding cars from there.

According to them, this will cut down pollution, make traffic flow smoother and reduce accidents. These car free zones are going to be introduced today and the Transport Commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, said that the operation will be closely monitored.
