The Reva Electric Car Co. is bringing its act to New York, reportedly set to build a new fleet of electric cars to be situated in the Syracuse area. The company will be in cahoots with Bannon Automotive where they will assemble the three-door plug-in hatchback at a site somewhere in the Syracuse area. The plant is expected to be officially announced at a news conference and will open next year with an initial workforce of 100 people.

Another car manufacturer seems to be picking up as far as business is concerned as they have announced that they will be hiring an additional workforce for its new Rolls Royce Ghost. The company plans to increase workforce by 50%, creating 150 new jobs that should be great news in the car industry.

The majority of the new positions have been created in the wood, leather and paint shops as well as the assembly areas. In addition there will be a number of new positions in the headquarter offices, also based at Goodwood. Rolls-Royce is keen to fill all positions within the next few months and anticipates drawing on the considerable pool of highly skilled automotive industry personnel available in the UK.

This welcome news is sure to put laid off workers and the jobless back on track. The number of laid off employees from the car industry has swelled and to date, a lot of them are still looking for a job. Apparently, Rolls Royce may be their best ticket for now so expect a lot of these jobless workers lining up to be possibly hired.

It’s no secret that the auto industry is currently in a state of chaos but one manufacturer seems to be doing just fine. Who you ask? Well, Rolls-Royce, duh.

The luxury automaker recently expressed their intentions to increase their manufacturing workforce to accomodate for 150 new employees (an increase of 50%). This increase is in leui of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost (concept sketch above) which is set to hit showrooms sometime in 2010.

The bad news is that Toyota Australia is scaling back in production but the good news is that they are not announcing any immediate job cuts. That is for now. The global car industry is in a deep downturn and figures released this week show February was the worst month for car sales in Australia since 2003. Sales were down 22 per cent from last year.

Toyota’s Max Yasuda has told ABC1’s Inside Business the company is hoping its new green cars will help generate a recovery in the market early next year.

“Our first priority, even in these difficult times, is to keep our workforce … to keep our jobs,” he said.

He says federal and state governments should commit to using the green car when it is released.

“This is the most serious challenge that we’ve faced … in the 50-year history of Toyota Australia,” Mr Yasuda said.

“I think we have to invent something that we have never done before in terms of production system as well as … in terms of how to sell a car.”

Another luxury car line has been bitten by the economic downturn bug. Lamborghini, which drew in fantastic sales last year, has announced that they are halting production for two weeks between February and March in light of the weakening economy.

Lamborghini’s production slowdown will affect around 300 members of its 1000-plus workforce, but it has already agreed the move with unions.

“We have established a decade of sales and profit increases, including another record year for deliveries in 2008, but we cannot maintain the previous levels of production during the downturn,” said Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

The UK car industry reports that the Mini will be the next car company to layoff temporary workers in Cowley, Oxfordshire. The firm’s German owner BMW is expected to announce 850 job losses out of a workforce of 4,500 at the company’s factory. This marks another car manufacturing company needing to adjust with the times and a number of people who stand to lose their jobs yet again.

And agency staff personnel, most of whom are on temporary contracts and are not eligible for redundancy payouts, are expected to bear the brunt of the cutbacks. There will also be cuts in production beginning today, when the factory stops producing cars for a week in response to a slump in orders.

Mini and the unions have been in discussion over a change to the current work pattern of three shifts a day, and the company is expected to announce an end to seven-day-a-week continuous production.
