While Hankook has fitments on Volkswagen cars in other global markets, this development represents a significant increase in VW fitments on Volkswagens to be sold in Canada and the U.S., where Jetta is the highest selling VW model vehicle.

The Optimo tire line is an ideal fit for VW and its exports to the U.S. and Canadian markets because of the product’s capability to deliver a balance of performance, wear, quality and quietness, all of which add to VW’s perception as a high-quality, affordable automaker. Hankook Tire’s Optimo products are gaining recognition by the OEMs as high quality touring performance tires.

This expansion of tire fitments with Volkswagen into the U.S. and Canada represents a significant time for the future growth of Hankook Tire. “We are extremely excited to supply the Optimo for Volkswagen Jetta, Jetta SportWagen and New Beetle exports to the U.S. and Canadian markets,” said Seung Hwa Suh, CEO, Hankook Tire. “After working closely with Volkswagen as an OE supplier in other world markets, we have created excellent relationships, and we look forward to earning even more fitments on VW vehicles to be sold in the U.S. and Canada.”

The Volkswagen Golf has been adjudged the 2009 World Car of the Year. A jury comprised of fifty-nine international automotive journalists from twenty-five countries around the world chose this year’s World Car of the Year, which was announced this morning at a news conference during the New York International Auto Show.

The Golf, a perennial favorite in the Volkswagen line-up, has sold more than 26 million units in 120 countries, making it one of the top selling vehicles of all-time. The new sixth generation Golf first debuted at the Paris Motor show last fall, and made its U.S. debut at this year’s New York International Auto Show. The Golf has been designed to be quieter, sportier, fuel efficient and present a clean, distinctive appearance that — staying true to Volkswagen — is fun-to-drive.

The new Golf embodies Volkswagen’s product strategy aimed to sharpen the brand design in all classes and apply greater global consistency among model names. These steps are intended to leverage the offerings of the world’s third largest automaker as it looks to increase sales and market share. The 2010 Golf will be available in dealer showrooms across the U.S. this fall in gasoline and TDI versions.

Don’t be surprised to find a new pickup at the Melbourne Motor Show which sports the logo of Volkswagen. If you do, then perhaps you have stumbled upon the new Volkswagen Pickup Concept which is bound to give other familiar pickups like the Hi-Lux and Navara a run for their money.

The Pickup concept previews the full production model that is currently in development. The 5.18 metre long concept vehicle is not based on any current model VW, but will feature the latest generation of highly advanced, torque strong, fuel saving common-rail turbo-diesels (TDI).

“The Volkswagen Pickup will certainly be a welcome and exciting fourth addition to our expanding range of light commercial vehicles,” commented Phil Clark, Director of Volkswagen Group Australia Commercial Vehicles. “Being the only premium European offering a product in the 1 tonne segment is a great opportunity for Volkswagen. I believe the Pickup will be one of the best selling models in the Volkswagen line-up.”
