Recent reports suggest that BMW is gearing up to send the V10 engine featured in their current generation M5 to the great beyond and instead replace it with a turbocharged V8.

Sure, the V10 is fast, that’s not secret, but the fact that it’s just about everything besides environmentally friendly has left BMW with no choice but to turn towards greener alternatives such as the above mentioned turbocharged V8.

If these reports are true, we should be seeing the a turbocharged V8 engine appear in the next generation M5 with right around 555 HP and 500 lb-per-feet of torque.

What you see above is Bentley’s recently announced 2011 Muslanne. If you have to ask the price, then you probably can’t afford it seeing how it is a Bentley and it is brand new.

Anyways, under the hood of this vehicle is an 8 cylinder 6.75 liter twin turbocharged engine capable of 505 horsepower and 752 pounds-per-feet of torque. Transmission wise the Mulsanne is to feature a paddle shifting 8 speed transmission. Futhermore, it will feature carbon ceramic brakes and 20-inch wheels.

Like I said before, if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it. But that doesn’t even matter, because Bentley has yet to announce a price, we’ll keep you posted.

Unhappy with the current state of affairs with diesel engine supplier Navistar, Ford has instead taken matters into their own hands producing a diesel V8 codenamed ‘Scorpion”.

This turbocharged 6.7 liter  diesel burning V8 engine  has been meticulously deigned in-house by Ford to include just about every modern feature you can think of. Hell, they even put it through tests equivalent of being driven 250,000 miles. We’ll apparently be seeing this appear in Ford’s 2011 Super Duty vehicles.

Ford released a lot of information regarding this new engine, way too much for me to list here, but I’ve included the official press release after the break so you can read all about it.

Those looking for the ultimate project car will be happy to hear that a 1985 Ford Mustang GT has appeared on eBay. Now, if its 5.0 liter V8 isn’t enough to buy you over, how about the fact that it only has 99 miles on the odometer?

That’s right, this car has reportedly been in climate controlled storage somewhere in Ottumwa, Iowa ever since it was purchased back in 1985. As for a price, well the bid currently sits at $11,600 with the reserve not yet met so there is really no telling how much this seller wants for the car.

Honda has really been taking the initiative to move their entire line of vehicles towards a much greener pasture.

This time, it seems that President of Honda, Takanobu Ito, has come forward to say that they have halted their development of V8 engines along with RWD vehicles to instead focus on the obviously greener alternative; hybrids.

Below is what Mr. Ito had to say:

I don’t think we need a classic front-engine, rear-drive car. It would be meaningless to emulate what other companies have been doing for more than five decades… We are considering incorporating new engines, motors, transmissions and chassis into mid- to large-sized hybrid vehicles, and I think this is a good opportunity for change.

Let’s hope other companies do the same without sacrificing power. Because I’m sure many of you out there share my need for speed.

Ferrari is known for making some of the fastest, meanest and most expensive vehicles on the market. Their latest hardtop offering, the California, is no exception.

However, German tuner Edo Competition apparantly didn’t think the car was fast, mean or expensive enough announcing that they have done a bit of tuning to the car. Of course the first thing they set their eyes on was the California’s 4.3L V8 engine, bumping it up to a modest 500HP making for a 0-62MPH run of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 196.

If the added speed isn’t enough you can opt for lowering springs, a sport tune suspension and/or 20/21-inch alloy wheels.

Ariel Atom 500

British sportscar-maker Ariel has uncovered its upcoming Atom 500 and suggested it will cost at least $160,000. The present Ariel Atom 300 is already one of the best-performing cars on the road, even with its fairly modest four-cylinder engine. However, the Atom 500 will contain a compact V8 producing some 500 horsepower.

This supercar won’t come cheap as the anticipated $50,000 cost of its custom-developed V8 engine alone will drive the price of the limited-edition Atom 500 to about triple that of its four-cylinder counterpart. A few lucky buyers will get to experience 0-60 in about 2.5 seconds which is fast enough to keep pace with the Bugatti Veyron, which at ten times the price makes the Atom look like a real bargain.

Bentley recently said good-bye to its Arnage flagship, but the company still has enterprising plans for the future, with a new ‘super’ Arnage expected to begin production by the end of next year. Bigger, faster and more luxurious, a near production ready concept is rumored to be revealed at this August’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The current Arnage is showing its age versus modern super-luxury competitors like the Rolls Royce Phantom and Maybach sedans.

Code named “Project Kimberly”, the new model will be based off an altered version of Audi’s modular platform used for a host of models ranging from the next A8 flagship to the A4  sedan. However, the Bentley will sport its own unique V8 powertrain with drive sent to the rear wheels via ZF’s new 8-speed automatic. A replacement for the Arnage T may also in the works, but don’t expect it to have the Bugatti Veyron’s W16 engine as previously reported.

Ford is developing its high level 5.0L V8 Coyote, apparently in secret, but speculation is already out. Replacing its 4.6L V8, this one will be more powerful with a 400 hp aluminum engine, with 400 lb/ft of torque. This car will be up against Dodge Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro. It should give equal or better fuel economy than its current model.

This new engine is being test driven under the hood of a Mustang. While everything is more or less ready, Ford is still planning to keep it under wraps until next year because it does not want to cut into the sales of its 2010 Mustang and 2009 F150 models. It will likely go on sale by mid next year.

BMW lovers can now map out how they can get their hands on the BMW X5M and X6M as their prices have been made public. The X5M will ding your budget to the tune of $85,400, while the X6M will set you back $88,900.

But for nearly $90,000, you get what, for now, are the two most powerful BMWs on the road. Both models will reap the benefits of a 555 hp, 500 lb-ft twin turbo 4.4L V8. That’s 55 hp and 105 lb-ft more than the M5 or M6; two vehicles that cost more than their crossover counterparts. The M treatment will also add more aggressive aesthetics, torque-vectoring AWD, and massive 15.6 inch front rotors to help these flying bricks stop on a dime (or 900,000 dimes, really).

Does that make the X5M and X6M a compelling value? If you’re in the market for a 550 hp crossover, we guess so, because outside of the substantially more expensive Porsche Cayenne Turbo S ($124,000) these new Bimmers are the only other family-haulers with that kind of muscle.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled interior images and a few design sketches of its SLS AMG, which is a V8-powered supercar in development that will be launched in spring 2010. This supercar has an aluminium spaceframe and body with gullwing doors, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front-mid engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission in a transaxle configuration and sports suspension with aluminium double wishbones.

It will also have a long hood, large wheels, wide track and long wheelbase. The interior promises to be sporty, dominated by a wing-shaped dashboard and it will feature four prominent air vents and fine quality leather providing a classy look.

Here is something that all Mercedes Benz lovers are bound to like. If you are among the car geeks eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe, then you only have to wait until May to get your hands on one.

Now revealed ahead of its scheduled debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, the new two-door joins its four-door counterpart, which Mercedes just unveiled a few months ago, and replaces the outgoing CLK model.

The new E coupe encompasses all the luxury features and prestige you’d expect from a Mercedes, built into the most aerodynamic shape in the industry and incorporating a bank of the latest environmental, safety and convenience features developed by Mercedes’ vast engineering resources.

Engines range from a fuel-sipping four-cylinder turbo diesel all the way up to a tire-smoking 388-horsepower V8, with an even more powerful AMG version to follow, and with prices ranging from 44,684.50 all the way up to 66,045.00 Euros and beyond for the top-of-the-line E500 Coupe.

This will probably be quite a change for Audi’s top trim cars, the next S5 generation won’t have a V8 engine anymore. It will be replaced by a 329-horsepower supercharged V6. An Audi spokesperson said ”Not only does this new engine get nearly the same horsepower and more torque, but the fuel efficiency with the V6T improves by 30 percent over the V8.”

As rumors go, the same thing will happen to the V10 engines, which will be replaced by twin-turbo 4.2l V8 engines.

If you can hardly wait to get your hands on this car and have your first drive test, then it’s good news for you! Fortunately you don’t have to wait that long! Supposedly it’s going to be out there Q1 2009!
