The Alert Driver Wristband, Or, Sleepy Drivers Kill

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

The Alert Driver Wristband, folks…it’s a strange idea, that frankly, I don’t understand for the life of me.  I mean, come on…it’s a wristband that can tell how sleepy you are by communicating with an RFID tag positioned in the car that, in turn, can gauge your reaction time.

This comes courtesy of the crew at Yanko Design, and the physics behind it is a little shaky–frankly, I can’t tell how a wristband talking to an RFID tag could measure your reaction time.   Especially if it’s on your wrist to begin with–you’re just moving your wrist on the steering wheel.  But from what I’ve heard so far, just because I’m unclear on the nuts and bolts doesn’t get in the way of it working.  Word is it does the job just fine.

If nothing else, it’s a nifty concept–I haven’t even seen it available for sale anywhere–but anything that keeps drivers awake and aware is good by me.

The SmartCap–For The Long Haul(ers)

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Folks, we all know that one of the biggest dangers on the road, especially at night, is sleepy drivers.  It’s easy to nod off when you’re tired and driving–watching the scenery flow by, the hills rolling, rolling gently, and a little at a time, a little, a li….

See?

That’s how easy it is to drop off.  But now, thanks to Australian inventors, there’s the SmartCap.  It looks like your ordinary Class-X baseball cap, right?  And you may think you’ve seen devices like this before that sound an alarm when your head dips below a certain angle.  Well, that doesn’t always work, folks–but the SmartCap goes it one better.  Check THIS out:

The SmartCap uses a number of sophisticated sensors to measure brainwave information, and apply an independently-validated algorithm to identify when the wearer is experiencing symptoms of fatigue.’

IT READS YOUR MIND.

A baseball cap that reads your mind and tells you you’re getting sleepy.  That’s actually kind of cool in a creepy sort of way.

No word yet on when they’ll be commercially available or at what price, but chances are these will be a big deal.
