Volkswagen is working with Autonet Mobile to offer the uconnect in-car WiFi Internet service to Routan owners. The system will be similar to the one found in Chrysler or Cadillac cars and it will rely on a 3G mobile data modem which will get you some high-speed EVDO connectivity. You can expect download speeds from 400 to 800kbps and uploads speeds peaking at about 400kbps. The uconnect service will be priced starting at $29 per month and in case you do a lot of traveling by car then maybe you should consider getting a Routan minivan.

VW Routan

Does an auto commercial exist that is more annoying than the current Volkswagen Routan ad in which actress Brooke Shields accuses various yuppie couples of having babies just so they can buy the crossover/mini van built by a German manufacturer?  Even the people in the commercials are annoyed, and so far, reviewers are not impressed by the vehicle either.

First of all, the Routan isn’t even really engineered by Germans—it’s more of a reworked, slightly smaller version of the Chrysler minivan, and thousands of those are currently languishing on Chrysler lots all over America. At the rate things are going (or not going), Chrysler will soon be giving a free one away with every mid-sized sedan purchase. So it’s hard to understand what Volkswagen was thinking when it developed the Routan, or even if it was thinking. The Routan is available in three different trim levels and comes with an MSRP of $33,000 to $36,000. With an EPA rating of 17 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway, it’s possible, depending on gas prices, that Volkswagen could have a few of these left when 2010 dawns.
