Top Gear’s Hundred Pound Car Challenge

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Before you wonder, no, this isn’t a competition for go karts–the “hundred pound” in the headline above is an indication of cost, not weight, as in “one hundred pounds sterling”.

If you’ve seen Top Gear before, and enjoy it like we do here, you’ll know that they love the high-dollar top-end sports car experiences.  There are days when I’m convinced that they would have a Lamborghini’s baby if it were possible.

But a lot of people said much the same thing, and thus, the Top Gear boys decided to economize for a couple episodes and brought us the Hundred Pound Car Challenge.

It’s a two parter, and we’ve got both below–but here, the boys get their hands on some dirt cheap cars and put them through their paces.  The cars in question come from Volvo, Audi and, I believe, a GTI Range Rover.

The results are both hilarious and highly informative as only Top Gear can provide.

Check out the videos below, and pay special close attention for the backhanded praise for their cheap cars as they make their first distance trip.

Climate Control Rear Seats Added to 2010 Range Rover Options

Monday, October 26th, 2009

One of the things that lure the interest of car buyers these days would be the features of their vehicles. And for this luxury SUV, the makers of the Range Rover , optional heating and cooling comforts through a Climate Control Seats have been traditional. But now with the 2010 Range Rover, the option gets broadened as they now have provisions for providing CCS for both the front and rear seats. The CCS system is provided by Amerigon Inc. for the front seats of the Range Rover since 2007. The addition of the rear seat CCS adds more splendor on the 2010 model which should add to its already sultry line of features which include new seats and lush interiors.

The system is completely independent of the automobile’s heating and air conditioning system and does not reduce power available to the engine. It also emits no CFCs or other gases and is completely friendly to the environment.

Land Rover to Make LRX Concept

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

There’s a new Land Rover in town and it’s going to enter production soon. The LRX concept has been shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show and it looks like the car maker has decided to start producing it. The LRX will not be available however until 2011 but at least we know we can get this baby at some point in the future.

We don’t have all the hot details about the insides of the LRX so we’ll just have to believe Land Rover when it says that this new SUV will be “the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced.” Current rumors about the LRX mention things like all-wheel-drive hybrid powertrain or electric motor for the rear wheels. With that in mind we’ll just have to keep waiting for Land Rover to reveal everything there is to know about the LRX.

Range Rover Convertible

There have been many topless conversions attempted that leave a lot to be desired when referring to styling, but this creation may very well take the cake. This awkward looking (with the roof either up or down) Range Rover Convertible was constructed by Newport Convertible Engineering (NEC) of Placentia, California.

NEC retained the Range Rover’s door frames however they also added a central roll bar. To work out the problem with the rear hatch, NEC configured a unique split tailgate. There is no accounting for some peoples taste!

SOMS announces Eco-Friendly Oil Filters Expansion for European and Asian Vehicles

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

The thing with some car accessories and parts is that they are sometimes limited to certain vehicle classes. And for SOMS Technologies, a provider of engine oil filtration products, expanding its car niche for compatibility with their eco-friendly oil filters is certainly a great piece of news for people who want to use their product.

Major European and Asian automotive brands, including Audi, Honda, Infinity, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Range Rover, Toyota and Volkswagen have now been included in their list of compatible cars that can make use of their eco-friendly filters. This latest expansion is in response to increased demand from fleets and individual drivers looking to reduce their carbon footprint while also saving money.

By extending the filter’s availability, now an even greater range of businesses and consumers can use the microGreen filter to increase environmental efficiency of their current vehicles or boost the efficiency of new hybrid vehicles.

The patented microGreen oil filter has two filters in one standard spin-on canister, which ensures that the oil stays cleaner, far longer – improving the life of the engine and allowing drivers to better maintain their vehicles. While traditional oil filters capture the larger particles in engine oil between 25 to 40 microns, microGreen’s patented microfilter system captures particles down to two microns in size.

This allows vehicles to operate up to 30,000 miles without an oil change, reducing motor oil use by 70 percent, filter use by 50 percent and cutting oil maintenance costs by 65 percent. As a result, businesses and consumers can ‘green’ their vehicles and see an immediate return-on-investment, unlike other eco-friendly alternatives.
