Summer is here and most people are on vacation. All except some workers who may be busy doing some construction or related public repair work that takes advantage of the vacation period. Hence, motorists should be careful when passing by these areas.

Accidents or untoward mishaps may ensue. Avoiding the potholes or the workers themselves needs the proper alertness of drivers. One wrong navigational tactic could lead to serious injuries and of course unscheduled car repairs.

“Given the backlog of transportation needs across the country, AAA advocated dedicating a portion of the economic recovery funds to transportation,” said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet. “It’s important for the driving public to be aware of the increased construction activity and to adjust to changing driving conditions and work zones when they encounter them, especially during this peak travel period,” added Darbelnet.

The important thing is to consider how far you can go, regardless of the speed you are driving at. And that is practically what Hypermiling is all about.

Hypermiling is the new kind of motoring event where cars are driven thousands of miles very slowly and very carefully, proving that motor sports don’t have to be all about screeching tyres, maximum revs and power slides.

The aim is to drive the car as far as possible on a single tank of fuel, as frugally as possible. That means no stereo, no air conditioning, no open windows and minimal use of the throttle. Tire pressures are inflated to their absolute maximum to reduce rolling resistance and every fuel-saving technique possible is applied – such as freewheeling down hills! Not recommended by your car insurance company.

Tips for Hypermilers:

• Accelerate as smoothly and as little as you can possibly get away with.
• Brake as gently and as little as possible; anticipating the traffic flow will help you achieve this.
• Coast up to traffic lights and stop signs.
• As you approach the top of a hill, take your foot off the accelerator; gravity will automatically increase your speed as you crest the brow.
• Avoid bumps and potholes, which reduce forward momentum.
• Install a fuel-consumption gauge in your car, so you can track your performance.

One thing that every car has to deal with is the wear and tear that they have to indulge in. And seeing open potholes in the road isn’t helping, possibly aggravating the suspension and under chassis of vehicles that have to go over them. Thanks to Kentucky Fried Chicken, these potholes may finally be done away with.

For more than half a century, KFC has “filled up” its fans with the Colonel’s world famous, freshly prepared fried chicken. Today, in a marketing first, KFC is celebrating its continued dedication to freshness by launching a pilot infrastructure renewal program, becoming the first-ever corporate sponsor of “fresh”ly “filled up” potholes in up to five major cities across the U.S.

The KFC Colonel and his professional road repair crew got started in their hometown of Louisville by filling up potholes and re-freshing roads around the city. KFC also issued an open offer to mayors of cities nationwide, asking them to describe their city streets’ state of disrepair. Four of these lucky cities, chosen at random, will receive KFC’s road re-”fresh”ment, promising citizens a smooth drive that is fit for a Colonel.

KFC-refreshed potholes will be branded via a large stencil that reads “Re-Freshed by KFC” in eye-catching, but non-permanent street chalk.
