The place to be this week is in Monterey as the Porsche Panamera is scheduled to make another appearance in connection with the Monterey Classic Peninsula’s Classic Car Week. With the four door sports car now a reality, Porsche is said to be bringing in 30 new Panameras to cover major car events that include:

• 36th Rolex Monterey Historics
• Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Auto Week

Other cars scheduled to be showcased by Porsche:

• The 1962 Porsche Type 804 Formula 1 racer
• The 1960 Porsche Type 718 Formula 2 racing car
• The 1962 Porsche Type 718 W-RS 8-cylinder Spyder
• The Porsche GT1 98LM

Porsche-sponsored activities for the fans at Laguna will include a heritage display featuring former and current race cars, Porsche’s current showroom product line, and experts to answer Porsche questions. The Porsche Panamera will go on sale this October 17, 2009 at the brand’s 202 U.S. dealers.

The all-new Porsche Panamera Gran Turismo is the first-ever four-door sports car. Porsche’s unique four-seater was conceived and designed as a grand touring car, combining numerous talents in typical Porsche style: sporting driving dynamics, a spacious interior, and the supreme comfort of a gran turismo.

Standing Room Only! That is what happened when Porsche formally introduced the much awaited Porsche Panamera four door performance car at the Shanghai Motor Show. Presented with great pride and fanfare at the company’s Shanghai Motor Show exhibit, the Panamera is unique in the premium sedan segment thanks to its ’sports car for four’ concept and its best-in-class fuel efficiency.

“The crucial task for our engineers was to combine Porsche’s sporting DNA with all the spaciousness and driving comfort of a luxurious sedan,” said Wolfgang Durheimer, who was on hand for the debut and is Porsche’s executive vice president of research and development. “The Panamera is an alternative car concept for the premium customer, and while competing with established vehicles in the premium class, it will be a clear segment leader in terms of performance, driving dynamics and efficiency.”

The Panamera is Porsche’s fourth model line, joining the 911, Boxster/Cayman and Cayenne model series. It is the first premium car with an automatically shifting double-clutch transmission to feature an engine start/stop system that saves fuel and reduces emissions by turning the engine off when it is not needed, such as sitting at a stop light, for example. All engines have advanced and fuel-efficient Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), as well.

The Panamera goes on sale at authorized U.S. Porsche dealers on Oct. 17, 2009. The manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) for the Panamera S is $89,800, while the Panamera 4S and Panamera Turbo retails for $93,800 and $132,600, respectively.

Joining the ranks of cars being shelved due to lack of funds and the current state of the economy is Nissan Motors. Nissan has announced that they have shelved the the rear-wheel-drive Silvia/200SX replacement and the four-door iteration of the R35 GT-R. Both have been put on hold indefinitely, which can likely be read as ‘cancelled’.

The four-door GT-R, which was to be badged an Infiniti, was intended to compete with the Porsche Panamera. While we rarely enjoy hearing of model cancellations, we can still sleep at night without the four-door R. The Silvia on the other hand, well, that’s an entirely different matter.

The Silvia successor was to see Nissan make a triumphant return to light-weight RWD motoring – a gap that has not been filled since Nissan binned the Silvia/200SX badge back in 2002.

Nissan will be shifting its focus to making small and medium sized cars, including a Prius competitor, that will likely fare better in the current automotive environment.

Despite previous announcements that BMW will be shelving the BMW CS due to financial reasons, reports have it that the concept car has been spotted. Snappers caught CS mule testing at the firm’s Munich Headquarters, spreading wild thoughts on the actual status of the BMW CS.

The CS will be longer, lower and wider than the 7-series on which it’s based – as our illustrations show – drawing comparison’s with the rash of recent ‘four-door coupes’, including the Mercedes CLS, Aston Martin Rapide and Porsche Panamera.

All attention is now focused on whether the BMW CS is coming or going. But then again, why would BMW perform such testing be done if the car has indeed been shelved?
