AutoWeek tosses in a twist with this tour — the fourth in a continuing series — guided by AutoWeek editor and associate publisher Dutch Mandel, with commentary from Eric Bloom, frontman for the rock band Blue Oyster Cult, and AutoWeek’s adopted rock-and-roll auto critic.

Hyundai will officially introduce the Hyundai Nuvis at the New York Auto show, the vehicle that will serve as Hyundai’s bet in the future-generation crossover, blending attributes of a tall urban car and a premium utility vehicle.

The Nuvis is the eleventh signature concept car to be designed at the company’s California Design Center in Irvine, Calif. In addition to showcasing the brand’s cutting-edge capabilities, Nuvis also hints at a possible design direction for a future-generation crossover, blending attributes of a tall urban car and a premium utility vehicle.

Consistent with Hyundai’s pledge to lead all brands in U.S. fuel economy by 2015, Nuvis is powered by Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive architecture, which uses breakthrough lithium polymer battery technology.

Hybrid Blue Drive has an all-electric mode and a parallel drive mode, meaning that the wheels are turned by power coming directly from the gasoline engine, or the electric motor, or both together, as conditions demand. This parallel hybrid drive architecture will serve as the foundation for future Hyundai hybrid drive vehicles, starting with the next-generation Sonata in the United States.

GPS devices and navigation tools have become common in most cars today. Garmin Ltd. Is an identified leader in this niche and apparently we will be seeing their products for the new 2011 Chrysler Grand Cherokee which debuted at the New York Auto Show.

The program marks Garmin’s first major automotive navigation system to be installed at the factory. The system combines Garmin’s best-selling, affordable, and intuitive user interface into Chrysler’s Uconnect radio that merges technology and content into one 6.5” touchscreen display.

“Garmin is uniquely positioned to quickly bring the latest and greatest navigation technology to an in-dash environment – priced at a level that mainstream drivers can afford,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and chief operating officer. “Being a navigation provider for Chrysler is a significant and long sought-after achievement for our company. The collaborative effort puts Garmin’s nüvi-like consumer experience – complete with affordable map updates – into an original equipment, in-dash radio. The navigator includes highly detailed Navteq maps of North America with nearly six million points of interest, as well as many cutting-edge features found in Garmin’s newest portable devices, like:

• Lane Assist – guides you to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit, making unfamiliar intersections and exits easy to navigate.
• Junction View – realistically displays 3D road signs and junctions on your route along with arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation.

A prototype of the Acura DZX debuted at the New York Auto Show, boasting of provocative luxury four door sports coupe which is scheduled to on sale in the fall of 2009. The segment bending ZDX features stunning coupe-like styling with the added benefit of a commanding presence and flexible utility.

The ZDX is designed to break new ground for Acura in the areas of provocative styling, contemporary luxury and meticulous refinement. With its sensuous curves, sharply raked roofline and bold fender flares, the ZDX blurs the distinction between coupe, sedan and sport utility vehicle.

In keeping with the coupe-inspired styling, the rear door handles are cleverly concealed in the C-pillar. The all-glass tailgate opens wide to reveal a highly functional cargo space with integrated under-floor storage. The prototype is finished off with stylish dual chrome exhaust outlets and 9-spoke machined wheels fitted with 20-inch Michelin tires.

“From the very first sketch of the ZDX, I wanted to create an emotional vehicle that challenged conventional thinking of what a sports coupe should be,” said Michelle Christensen, ZDX exterior designer. “My goal was to create a strikingly beautiful exterior, and use that attraction to help draw you into the rich interior.”

Going compact or small is the trend these days and while many are relying on the information from publications, the web and the ever reliable word of mouth, others may find it better to catch a glimpse of the best Microcars at the New York International Automobile Show sponsored by The Vintage Microcar Club. The Microcar display includes a 1965 Peel P50 owned by The Lane Motor Museum that seats one person and is powered by a 50cc 2-stroke motor. Only 46 were originally produced and 22 survive today.

Volvo has been known for investing a lot on passenger safety and for the people flocking over to the New York Auto Show, lucky visitors may eventually get a feel of the Volvo Experience as they will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a 2010 Volvo XC60 for the automaker’s ‘XC60 City Safety Experience’.

Volvo’s City Safety, one of the industry’s most advanced safety features, can help the driver avoid low speed collisions when driving in slow moving, stop and go traffic. The laser-based technology continuously monitors the area in front of the vehicle and can brake automatically to help avoid or mitigate a collision.

The XC60 City Safety Experience takes place on the Javits Center’s Inner Roadway and will be open during the public show. Show visitors can experience Volvo’s laser-based safety technology, which detects objects and automatically brakes to avoid rear-end crashes.

Getting into events such as the New York International Automobile Show can be frustrating especially if you expect a lot of people to be on hand. With millions of car lovers locally and abroad bound to be on hand, one can just imagine the chaos of getting simple tickets to the said affair. Thanks to the New York International Automobile Show, alternative ways of getting tickets have been announced.

The New York International Automobile Show announces three ways for consumers to purchase tickets to the 2009 exhibition, which begins April 10. The Show’s popular e-ticket program at www.autoshowNY.com allows visitors to buy tickets online, print them at their home or office and head straight to the Show.

Consumers can also use credit and debit cards to buy tickets at kiosks (similar to movie theaters) conveniently located throughout the Javits Center during the Show’s ten day run. And, as always, dozens of regular box offices will be open and available during Show hours.

“The New York Auto Show is always looking for ways to make our visitors’ experiences more enjoyable,” said show director Candida Romanelli. “And now with three ways to buy tickets, show-goers will spend less time in line and more time on the floor enjoying the nearly 1,000 new cars and trucks on display.”

To help speed the entry process, show management is adding even more specially marked entrances for e-ticket holders and those who purchase tickets at the new walk-up kiosks. These special entrances will allow visitors to bypass the regular ticket entrances, avoiding possible delays.
