New PSA Ads Launched to Curb Down Reckless Driving

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

The alarming rate of car crashes and accidents have claimed a large number of young drivers due to reckless imprudence. Being at the prime of their youth and foregoing the importance of driving safely on the roads, perhaps this effort by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) can help make them aware of what awaits them if they are not careful on the road.

The Advertising Council joined today with a coalition of state Attorneys General and consumer protection agencies to launch a new series of public service advertisements (PSAs) designed to save lives by reducing youth reckless driving.

NHTSA data shows that, on average, more than 300,000 teens are injured in car crashes each year, nearly 8,000 are involved in fatal crashes and more than 3,500 are killed. Research also shows that teen drivers are involved in more than five times as many fatal crashes as adults. Young drivers are more likely to speed, run red lights, make illegal turns and die in an SUV rollover.

Toyota Announces Safety Recall for Yaris

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

After the safety recall that Toyota had announced for the Lexus, the Toyota Yaris is now the next vehicle up for a recall. Working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there are approximately 134,900 Yaris vehicles sold in the U.S. that may have to be recalled due to defective seat belt pretensioners.

The Yaris is equipped with driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners that retract the seat belts to begin absorbing the occupant’s forward momentum when a severe frontal impact is detected. On 2006 through 2007 model year Yaris, Toyota has determined that the seat belt pretensioner deployment may affect the sound insulating foam in the center pillar, following a collision.

Toyota will inform owners of the involved vehicles with a Safety Recall notification via first-class mail beginning early February. Owners are requested to contact their local Toyota dealer for repair. The repair will take approximately one hour, depending on the dealer’s workload.
