GPS devices and navigation tools have become common in most cars today. Garmin Ltd. Is an identified leader in this niche and apparently we will be seeing their products for the new 2011 Chrysler Grand Cherokee which debuted at the New York Auto Show.

The program marks Garmin’s first major automotive navigation system to be installed at the factory. The system combines Garmin’s best-selling, affordable, and intuitive user interface into Chrysler’s Uconnect radio that merges technology and content into one 6.5” touchscreen display.

Garmin has been busy developing the new line of GPS devices for motorists today and now they have unveiled eight new nuvi models that come with urban pedestrian navigation enhancements.

Significantly thinner than previous models, “the nüvi 1200 and 1300 series are the first nüvi devices to offer pedestrian navigation capability enabled through optional CityXplorer maps. CityXplorer maps are available for select tourist destinations in both North America and Europe, and can easily be downloaded directly to the nüvi.”

Available as a download for select cities, CityXplorer allows the user to plan and use routes that can include public transit options such as bus, tramway, metro and suburban rail systems. Content from CityXplorer will range from $9.99 – $14.99, depending on the city. A list of cities offered in North America and Europe is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2009 at www.garmin.com.

A lot of GPS devices have come out recently. While most motorists look at them to get to places faster and economically, one thing that they tend to overlook is the eco-friendly ideals behind them. But with the Vexia Econav, targeting their latest product at the user who is conscious of their impact on the environment and saving money is certainly a GPS device worth considering.

The Vexia Econav range has the same aim as all other GPS gadgets – to get you to your desired destination. But the Econav aims to get your there as economically as possible. To that end it will calculate the best route to take based on the lowest amount of carbon you can produce getting there. You tell the device what type of car you have and what fuel it uses; then you specify how many passengers are traveling with you. You are then given the best route to take.

The Econav is expected to come to market across Europe in March. There will be two versions, the Econav 350 for $227 and the Econav 430 for $284. The main difference between the two units is the number of maps they are shipped with and the 430 has a slightly larger screen at 4.3″ compared to the 350’s 3.5″.
