Volkswagen is set to announce a new performance division for their vehicles, simply called “R”. This is mostly to compete with other brands who have their own divisions, BMW has M, Audi has Quattro, and Mercedes has its AMG division. And now, Volkswagen, not known really to make performance vehicles, will be launching their own brand. VW recently announced the Golf R.

Volkswagen has released a bunch of new press photos of the upcoming Golf R, which sports a turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI engine which produces 265 hp, while retaining all-wheel drive. The car features a bunch of luxury and performance stuff, like LED back lights, bi-xenon headlamps,, fancy new interior, among other things, pushing the price tag up to $40,000. Originally intended to make its debut at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen has decided to unveil their 2010 Golf R. This vehicle is falls into the same lineup as the Scirocco R that we saw back in May.

VW’s 2010 Golf R features a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine capable of 265hp, 320Nm of torque with the ability to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds when coupled with a 6 speed manual transmission or 6.4 seconds with the DSG model. Aesthetically the Golf R features an updated grill, LED daytime running lights and R badges out the ying yang.

Unlike the Scirocco R the Golf R is actually destined for a North American release but exactly when, we don’t know.
