It is back to the basics for General Motors! With a handful of marquee brands left under its wing, this is the best approach they are going to have to take. General Motors has been on rocky waters and apparently the need for a new strategy to gain its competitive nature once again is seen as the best choice.

At the moment, their remaining brands include the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC. With four brands under its wing, the best thing to do is re-study the state of these brands and highlight the features that can make them marquee models once again.

Given a new lease of life, General Motors may do well by showing how its vehicles perform and by staking out stronger identities for the brands. In short, the new GM can be likened to starting out their business as if it was their first day of operations. This includes planning as well to make sure that this time around, the new GM will be deadlier and better than the old one.

The 2010 GMC Terrain SUV will arrive in GM’s showrooms in September and is priced from $24,995 for the front-wheel drive model and $26,745 for the all-wheel drive version. The base SLE1 model is powered by a 182HP 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine linked to a 6-speed automatic with an EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 32 miles per gallon.

The better equipped SLT2 features sunroof, leather seating, a premium Pioneer sound system, and a special chrome package, starts at $29,995. In addition to the the 2.4L engine, the Terrain is also offered with a 3.0-liter direct injection V6 engine producing 265HP that returns an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city. The V6 model comes with added standard equipment such as integrated navigation system and a rear-seat DVD infotainment system.

Feast your eyes on the latest truck that joins the growing list of hybrid vehicles today. The latest addition is the 2009 GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid.

Not to be left out, baby brother GMC is getting in on the high-luxe hybrid game. Hence the GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid, which adds a whole raft of mega-luxe features to the 2009 GMC Yukon Hybrid that now seems inexcusably plain and primitive. Or, looked at another way, adds hybrid gear to the 2009 GM Yukon Denali (sans hybrid).

What’s all this going to run you? A mere $59,185 for the two-wheel-driver—or $62,030 for the four-by-four—before you start ticking your own set of options boxes. Certain buyers will be able to claim a tax credit of up to $2,200. And you nail the fuel economy, with 21 mpg city / 22 mpg highway for the two-wheel-drive model—far better than the standard Yukon Denali Hybrid, by the way, which delivers a mere 12 city / 19 highway.

GMC is debuting a new addition to its hybrid product portfolio with the Yukon Denali hybrid at this years New York auto show. Mechanics are shared with the hybrid versions of the Yukon and the Sierra that match GM’s 6.0-liter Vortec V8 engine with 332 hp and 367 lb-ft of torque to a two-mode hybrid system. Electric power steering, regenerative braking and an electric air-condition compressor further better fuel savings.

GMC calculates city fuel economy of 21 mpg. Also expect standard luxury fare such as new 22-inch chrome wheels, leather seating and 12-way power front seats that are heated and cooled. The 2009 GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid will go on sale in May with a base price of $59,185 for two-wheel-drive models and $62,030 for four-wheel-drive versions.

Verizon Heritage was in a big dilemma last month, needing to provide at least 100 courtesy cars after the sudden pullout of General Motors for the PGA Tour this year. Thanks to BMW, all that is in the past as they have agreed to provide the tournament a fleet of vehicles, according to a tournament news release.

Hundreds of Verizon Heritage volunteers have agreed to drive the vehicles from the BMW factory in Greer to The Sea Pines Resort. The first 50 cars are scheduled for pick up Wednesday. General Motors’ had supported the tournament for more than 20 years, providing 170 courtesy vehicles at no cost, and GMC chipped in another 65.

After GM backed out, the tournament had to rent 65 vehicles needed to run the tournament and ask players who live within driving distance to rely on their own transportation.

Brace yourselves for another form of power that will rev up cars soon. Reports have it that some students from Holland are trying out balloon-powered jet cars, a potential new technology for vehicles looking for alternative means of energy.

They don’t work for GMC yet, but fifth-graders at Zeeland’s Woodbridge Elementary school can now say, just like the car commercials, that their work is professional-grade engineering. The youngsters got a hand last week from engineers from Johnson Controls designing, testing and manufacturing balloon-powered jet-cars.

The professionals grouped kids into groups of three, making one, a project engineer, another a testing engineer and a third a managing engineer. It’s the way real-world engineers are organized when developing a product. The engineers came to Zeeland School as a part of a national program called a A World in Motion, available at no cost to schools.

A GMC truck in UPS service since 1987 has just turned 1 million miles. The odometer of one Bret Boyd has turned up to zero. That’s quite a performance for a service truck which has been around working full time for about 22 years.

The UPS truck is currently being used in Texas. During its lifetime it has gone through at least three engines and at least three paint jobs. Bret Boyd, its driver, has never been involved in any accidents with the GMC and he refused to replace it when he could have chosen a newer model.

Congratulations to Mr. Boyd and to GMC. I have a suggestion for him, if he still wants to keep the car, he should consider getting an engine that won’t eat as much gas.
