A lot of General Motors Dealerships have hit rock-bottom with the debacle that has hit the car manufacturing giant and while GM has already announced the slashing of about 42% of dealerships, a call for a special committee to look out for the welfare of these dealerships has been requested.

The proposal came in reaction to auto dealerships being left out of the restructuring. “Unlike many of the major affected players, including the United States government, United Auto Workers, major suppliers, bond holders and multi-million dollar pension funds, these small town dealerships risk having no voice in the General Motors bankruptcy,” Jones wrote.

If you look at it, this move seeks to get some sort of attention since dealerships have been left with nothing but to accept the fact of GM’s fate. Rather than left with nothing, a last ditch effort to allow these dealerships to participate or be given some consideration is being done and hopefully give them some right to air their concerns on the whole GM mess.

The ruckus today seems on who is in and who is out as far as dealerships for Chrysler and General Motors is concerned. And as far as the Asbury Automotive Group is concerned, 1 Chrysler and 2 GM dealerships are out.

The company today announced that its Nalley Chrysler/Jeep dealership in Roswell, Georgia is on Chrysler LLC’s list of stores that it intends to reject as part of its dealer consolidation plan. In addition, General Motors has notified the Company that it will not renew the franchise agreements for two Asbury dealerships in Kissimmee, Florida – a Chevrolet franchise and a combined Pontiac/Buick/GMC store – when they expire in November 2010.

The three dealerships generated revenues of approximately $105 million in 2008, or about 2% of Asbury’s total revenues of $4.6 billion.

General Motors will be closing down about 1,000 dealerships and though they have yet to be named, AutioNation has revealed that six of their dealerships will be affected by this unfortunate turn. Autonation today announced that General Motors notified AutoNation that six of its dealerships were identified for potential closing by GM.

The notification is part of GM’s communication today to approximately 1,100 dealers that GM does not expect to continue as GM dealerships past October 2010. The AutoNation stores potentially impacted by the consolidation plan represent 0% of AutoNation’s 2008 operating income. AutoNation does not believe that any one-time charges that may be associated with these actions will be material to its continuing operations or debt covenants.

Commenting on the consolidation plan, Mike Jackson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, “We believe GM’s consolidation plan is a difficult but positive step that will strengthen America’s dealer network and improve dealer profitability over the long term. The consolidation plan is consistent with AutoNation’s long-term strategy that we implemented in 2000 to consolidate domestic dealerships and realign our brand mix more towards import and premium luxury franchises. With our financial and operational strength and diversified brand mix, we are well-positioned to succeed in the rapidly changing automotive retail landscape.”
