State Farm Would Like You To Drive Greener

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

And to that end, the folks at the massive insurance conglomerate would like to tell you how to drive greener thanks to a series of videos they’ve produced and put up on YouTube.  The first is all about engine maintenance.

Now, chances are you’ve heard this one before, but things like keeping your oil changed and such can keep your car running better and save on the payments you make at the pump.  But here are a couple others thanks to State Farm:

1. Don’t use a higher octane gasoline than recommended by the manufacturer. It just doesn’t help.

2. Regular maintenance, and passing emissions tests, can improve fuel economy by four percent.

3. Replacing a faulty oxygen sensor can improve fuel economy by up to FORTY percent.

Now, that last one I didn’t know about at all.  But there are more tips to be had here, so check out the video below.

Toyota MR2 Coming Back as Hybrid Car?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Toyota may be bringing back a classic and sporty car familiar to most of us soon. The Toyota MR2 was that old 2-seater sporty looking car that was all the rave back then and now it looks like it will be making a resurrection of sorts…of the hybrid kind. This is of course if Toyota holds true to its word in bringing back that classy Toyota vehicle which will now be known as the MR-S. As a hybrid, it may not necessarily be as fast as the classic MR2. But then again, hybrids are not primarily about speed but fuel economy. Well at least the next best thing is you look like you are in a sporty-looking vehicle although I doubt if it can be as fast as that old classic MR2 vehicle back in the days.

Bosch Equipment Works To Improve Fuel Efficiency

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

We talk a lot about fuel efficiency, but it’s places like Bosch who are actually doing something about it.  One of their great advances comes in electronic solutions to help current cars get better fuel economy.

Two of the biggest systems used to improve fuel economy, as well as safety, are Bosch’s Electronic Battery Sensor and Electric Power Steering.   The Electronic Battery Sensor is designed to not only monitor a battery’s current performance, but also its expected performance down the line, giving you a jump ahead on a dying battery and improving the chances you won’t wind up broken down somewhere with a dead battery.

Electric Power Steering, meanwhile, starts with a sensor that registers the movements of driving and sends electrical signals to a motor on the steering column to augment that steering motion, cutting down on the amount of force involved and thus saving wear on the vehicle and improving fuel efficiency by cutting down on jerky movements.

It’s surprising how deeply involved Bosch components are to fuel savings, but you learn something new every day.
