It seems that a mechanic working for the F1 subsidiary GP2 has been put into an a coma late Saturday night while in the pit. According to WCF, 57 year old Vasco Rossi took a blow to the head from a wheel gun after a car got caught on a cable while driving through the pit.

Officials quickly hurried to get Mr. Rossi airlifted to the nearest hospital where he will stay in a coma for at least 3 days. Luckily, the condition is not life-threatening but this still goes to show you the dangers associated with working in the pits of such a big event.

Some pretty crazy stuff has come out of Asia but I must say, what you see above is definitely towards the top of that list. The creation in question is an F1 car fashioned completely out of bread done by Royal Plaza On Scotts in Singapore’s Culinary Executive Chef and a team of 6 chefs, 2 technicians, 5 volunteers and 2 artists.

The finished product reportedly took 33 pounds of yeast, 4.4 pounds of salt, almost 3 gallons of varnish and 14 liters of water. Sure this is cool and all, but I wonder how much calories this would be?

Last week we let you know that BMW was officially withdrawing from the Formula 1 circuit with came as news after Honda had withdrawn as well.

Well today reports are suggesting the Merecedes may be next to pull out of the sport. Apparantly, talks have been going on within the company over whether or not it would be worth it to continue providing the McLaren and Brawn teams with engines.

Don’t think this is all because of BMW, however, as a Mercedes spokeperson has said that their withdrawal “does not have any influence on [their] Formula One engagement”.

BMW has announced today that they will no longer be participating in the Forumla One circuit after this year. This decision was reportedly made before the Concorde Agreement was signed that would have tied BMW to the circuit until 2012.

BMW’s decision to withdraw was apprantly made due to the increasing finances that the circuit required. However, Autoweek suggests that the BMW team may continue under private ownership but BMW has given no official word to confirm this.

This is a sad day for Formula One and raises the question of which automaker will withdraw from the circuit next.

Mere days after Max Mosley announced that he wouldn’t be running for FIA president re-election we have Jean Todt announcing that he will run to take Mr. Mosley’s place:

“It is my intention to continue and expand the outstanding work of president Mosley, who for 16 years has worked tirelessly to strengthen the FIA’s major motor sport championships.”

For those who don’t know, Jean Todt was the former CEO of luxury automaker Ferrari so he knows a thing or two about speed. Max Mosley even announced alongside that he won’t be running for re-election that Jean Todt is his candidate of choice for the next FIA president.

Here’s to hoping that Mr. Todt will utilize his automobile knowledge to bring great things to the FIA and Forumla 1 in general.

It seems that Max Mosley, current President of the FIA, is slated to step down from his position and not run for re-election this October.

This confirmation comes as an alternative announcement to the one he gave last month that said he is in fact considering the candidacy for the FIA Presidency.

Formula 1 and the FIA in general have faced some trouble over the last year but perhaps once Mr. Mosley is no longer in office that can all be put to rest. Or so we can only hope.

Toyota is stepping up its World Championship run by unveiling its newest race car, the Toyota TF109. Toyota has been known to build exceptional race cars each time the F1 takes center stage but it seems that this time around, the path towards retaining that tradition seems to have taken a notable twist with the new regulations in play.

“After eight years in Formula 1 we have gained a huge amount of knowledge and improved considerably. We are hungry to win and ready to win, there should be no doubt about that,” said team president John Howitt. “The new regulations pose an extra challenge, but at the same time offer an opportunity. We have everything we need to win, some exceptionally talented people and a huge motivation to succeed, so now it is down to us to actually make it happen.”

New regulations for a new race on a new car. It looks like Toyota has its work cut out for themselves.

The Abu Dhabi race will be quite interesting too. The track runs through a hotel, it has a pit lane that’s placed under the track and it has 20 turns. If you plan to attend the last race of 2009 then you’re going to have a fun weekend. Ferrari World, the Yas Island Marina, a water park and various sports facilities are going to be available.

Well it looks like all that charm is going to be taken away. FIA is asking everyone to adopt the new changes. Same engines and transmissions are suggested to be used by every team racing in the F1
Here’s what Bernie Eccleston had to say about this:

We’re trying to get a level playing field. I don’t see why [manufacturers] should leave, we’re saving them an awful lot of money I hope.

Nothing is decided yet, as the Formula One Team’s Association is scheduled to meet FIA in Geneva after the Chinese Grand Prix. Strike anyone?
