Mere days after Max Mosley announced that he wouldn’t be running for FIA president re-election we have Jean Todt announcing that he will run to take Mr. Mosley’s place:

“It is my intention to continue and expand the outstanding work of president Mosley, who for 16 years has worked tirelessly to strengthen the FIA’s major motor sport championships.”

For those who don’t know, Jean Todt was the former CEO of luxury automaker Ferrari so he knows a thing or two about speed. Max Mosley even announced alongside that he won’t be running for re-election that Jean Todt is his candidate of choice for the next FIA president.

Here’s to hoping that Mr. Todt will utilize his automobile knowledge to bring great things to the FIA and Forumla 1 in general.

It seems that Max Mosley, current President of the FIA, is slated to step down from his position and not run for re-election this October.

This confirmation comes as an alternative announcement to the one he gave last month that said he is in fact considering the candidacy for the FIA Presidency.

Formula 1 and the FIA in general have faced some trouble over the last year but perhaps once Mr. Mosley is no longer in office that can all be put to rest. Or so we can only hope.

Things are starting to get a little hot in the battle between the Forumla 1 Teams Association and Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (aka the FIA). It seems that the two parties has a bit of an argument which resulted in 8 Forumla 1 teams, namely Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, BMW, Toyota, Red Bull and Toro Rosso (FOTA), to break away completely and announce that they will hold their own championship series in 2010.

Below are segments of the press release explaining the situation, courtesy of Autoblog:

“The teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 World Championship.

“These teams therefore have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new Championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners. This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders.

“The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series.”

With such major brands breaking away from the FIA it will be very hard for the federation to hold their own. F1 fans need not worry as this is in favor of the series. Let’s wait and see how this unfolds.

With icy roads becoming a problem for people in certain places, chances are you should start considering a better studded tire to assist you on the road. In fact, World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb can attest to the fact that the Pirelli Sottozero Spiked Winter tires are certified winners since it helped assist him in claiming his last title last year.

Claiming his 49th career win, Loeb commented: “These were classic winter conditions and we had very good grip from the Pirelli Sottozeros. Sometimes, when you could see the ice, it was hard to believe just how much grip there was from the tyres.”

In the past, spiked snow tires for WRC winter rallies used to be of a special narrow size, designed to bite through soft snow to the harder surfaces underneath. This year Pirelli’s tungsten-tipped Sottozero winter tires have been designed to fit on standard 15-inch gravel wheel rims, as part of the FIA’s cost-cutting drive which is fully supported by Pirelli.

Well it looks like all that charm is going to be taken away. FIA is asking everyone to adopt the new changes. Same engines and transmissions are suggested to be used by every team racing in the F1
Here’s what Bernie Eccleston had to say about this:

We’re trying to get a level playing field. I don’t see why [manufacturers] should leave, we’re saving them an awful lot of money I hope.

Nothing is decided yet, as the Formula One Team’s Association is scheduled to meet FIA in Geneva after the Chinese Grand Prix. Strike anyone?
