Chevy Volt Equipped With Driver-Controlled Low Horn Audio Signals

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Electric cars are great for addressing the issues surrounding alternative power for vehicles but like anything, they are not exempt from some areas. They will be quieter and eco-friendly but the safety of disabled people may be in question. This pertains for that issue on blind people who are walking the streets. The issue was first hurled at the Nissan Leaf which added futuristic noises at low speeds to warn pedestrians. Now the Chevy Volt has announced its own initiative, adding low horn audio signals that will be controlled by drivers.

On one hand, the Leaf has shown to be safer considering it makes sounds wherever it is though a bit irritating. The Chevy Volt leaves it up to the driver but some questions in mind such as driver responsibility comes into mind especially if they don’t keep their eyes on the road. Well there is always a loophole somewhere and hopefully they don’t pop out once these cars are in the streets.

Drop Stop Aiming to Save Lives

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

What causes car accidents? Well for one, we are familiar with the warning not to text or use your mobile phone while driving. But stubborn as most drivers are today, until an accident would come their way, chances are they would not heed such warning. However, thanks to Drop Stop, a new car interior accessory designed to guard the gap between the seat and console, and help keep drivers eyes on the road aims to change all that.

Drop Stop provides a safer, more convenient driving experience by eliminating the automatic reaction of taking one’s eyes off the road when a personal article slips through a vehicle’s seat/console gap. Drivers also save time and money with the easy-to-install Drop Stop because they no longer have to replace credit cards, make-up, earphone accessories, and other personal articles thought to be lost, stolen, or damaged.

Drop Stop(R) retails for $19.95 plus shipping and handling (set of 2: one for the driver side and one for the passenger side) and is available online at www.BuyDropStop.com.

Aggressive Ads Causing Road Accidents

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

This is not surprising news anymore. We have always been told that when driving, keep your eyes on the road. But when you come across some scintillating ads that apply an aggressive approach, chances are diverted attention lead to accidents. It is practically expected considering that roads are not empty most of the time.

Responsible Trails America (RTA) today released “Ads, Rhetoric, Behavior,” the first-ever report of its kind to comprehensively examine the effects of aggressive marketing and rider group rhetoric on reckless off-road vehicle (ORV) use. The report found a correlation with the growing subculture of reckless riders who trespass, ruin hunting and fishing, harass livestock, and threaten others using the outdoors.

RTA examined:

  • A five year period of TV advertisements by four major ORV manufacturers between January 1, 2004 – January 31, 2009;
  • Two decades of public statements by the highest-profile, manufacturer-supported user group, the BlueRibbon Coalition (BRC);
  • Reported incidents of reckless ORV riders breaking the law and threatening others.

Through its research, RTA concluded that aggressive behavior is being glorified in the commercials that were examined, and defended by often extreme rhetoric used by the BRC.

Driving Focus with the Ford Sync

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

When you drive, you have to focus on where you are going. And among the known distractions has to be the presence or use of mobile phones by drivers while driving. While we have seen a lot of laws passed regarding the ban of cell phone use while driving, it doesn’t seem to be working as planned.

We have seen a lot of hands-free innovations and the Ford Sync seems to have significantly contributed towards improving driving focus. A new study shows that Ford’s SYNC hands-free system significantly reduces the level of distraction when drivers select a phone number or choose a song on their MP3 player compared with the same operations with hand-held cell phones and music players.

“We know people want to stay connected in their vehicles, so Ford is continuing to deliver that connectivity for them responsibly and safely,” says Susan Cischke, Ford’s group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering. “Our SYNC research backs up what most of us instinctively know — that it is better while driving to place a call using a voice interface than dialing manually, because you can keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”

Ford is expanding its connectivity leadership by introducing SYNC’s new 911 Assist feature that adds post-crash emergency assistance, and new traffic updates, directions and related driving information to help drivers save time and fuel while reducing distraction.
