A few days ago, Petron Corp. Philippines revealed that the alternative fuel, E10, had harmful effects on vehicles. Corrosion, which was pointed out as the main culprit that could pose severe threats to a car’s fuel and gas intake parts, were attributed to other factors such as the use of previous types of fuel and inferior replacement parts. This was what Department of Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes revealed in the light of the fear that the celebrated E10 fuel may be doing more harm than good for vehicles.

According to the DOE secretary as well, the purity of local ethanol was 99.8 percent, just above the 99.3-percent standard. This may seem like an answer but the number of car owners complaining about the E10 ethanol fuel may be something to consider as well. If the case were for just a couple of motorists, then this excuse could be accepted. However, that is just the thing; there are no definitive numbers to actually pinpoint if majority of car owners using the E10 fuel have indeed had problems with it.

Finally, the E10 ethanol fuel was claimed to likewise help clean fuel tanks. Now this seems contradicting if you tie it up with the motorist claims. If actual numbers of complainants can be shown, the actual judgment on whether the E10 is good or bad for cars can be adjudged. But for now, it has been a battle of opinion which is not resolving anything as far as this issue is concerned.

For cars, there is a specific number of people who are allowed to ride in them. But in some cases, this is not being followed. Among the leading sector that are practicing this are the teenagers who are either trying to save on cost or for some joy-ride reasons. While the latter may seem a generous act, it still remains that there are laws against this.

Going back to saving on cost, it is evident to date that people are trying to buck the transportation expenses that they have to face. Similar to vehicle overcrowding, car cramming can result in hefty fines which may end up be a double whammy. Aside from the fines, the car structure and support will severely be affected.

Here are some risks of car cramming:

• Dragging – when a vehicle is overcrowded it can cause the underside to drag over speed bumps and when travelling up and down hills. This can cause damage to exhausts and brackets which can be costly to repair.
• Handling – more weight in your car than it was designed to carry can affect steering and braking which makes the car slow to respond and could lead to a nasty accident
• Headlights – excess weight can mean that headlights will appear misaligned and could cause dazzling in drivers travelling in the opposite direction

The current economy should not be an excuse. As drivers, they should know the capacity that their car can accommodate. Overlooking this can result in more expenses rather than saving if they are not careful.

When it comes to hitching a ride, people barely notice the state that a driver may be in. And among these include that of “Drink” drivers who may be exposed to potential hazards such as car accidents if they are not careful. But the question remains, would you ride with such a driver when your safety or even your life may be on the line?

“There is no excuse for drink driving and people’s willingness to get in the car with a drunk driver is alarming. By condoning this behaviour they are risking not only their own lives but those of other road users. If you know someone who plans to drink and drive, stop them, persuade them not to drive, even take their keys off them, but before volunteering to drive their car make sure you are insured, because if you’re not you will find yourself breaking the law.”

So eventually, it is not just about looking out for your own safety. You are doing that person a favor as well by pulling him away from potential mishaps in driving. Causes of drink driving range from addiction all the way to irresponsible behavior. Whatever the case may be, it would be best to make sure to make judgment calls before getting on the vehicle with such people. Your life may be on the line if you are not careful.
