Chevy Would Like To Remind You The Camaro Is Not Just For Summer

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

It’s true, folks–the Chevy Camaro is NOT just a summer car, as you might well have thought.  Even I never would have thought of a Chevy Camero as a winter car, at least until I saw this video from Chevy.

Chevy put out this fine bit of advertising trying to appeal, no doubt, to those of us who wouldn’t have thought of this car as doing well on snow.  It shows, clearly, that the Camaro is one horse that can handle the drifts and slick roads and do so in fine style.

Admittedly, the course they had this Camaro on was a closed course, and it didn’t look like it was tackling more than a couple inches of snow, but still–it was clearly moving at a high rate of speed on what would clearly be described as snow covered road.

Anyone who’s tried driving snow covered road will tell you that driving at a high rate of speed on one of them is a difficult proposition at best, and a really bad idea at worst.  So kudos to Chevy for making the Camaro look like a great snow vehicle!

Cold Start A Diesel School Bus On David’s Farm

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Well, folks, we’ve got a real crowning glory for the cold start kings out at David’s Farm, who have been waiting for “a real cold” to try and cold start the crown jewel in their collection.

Now, if you’ve been watching the other David’s Farm videos we talk about out here–and if you’re not watching them then you really should because they are a hoot and fairly educational too–then you probably remember that big diesel school bus they’ve been walking around for the last few weeks.

Today they’re going to try and start it.

It’s minus fifteen Celsius.  The bus has been sitting for over five weeks in snow and cold.  But the question of the day is: will it start?

The video below contains the shocking answer to this question of whether or not a badly abused, frozen diesel school bus will be able to start in the midst of a frozen Canadian winter.  Watch and enjoy!

Cold Starting A 1986 Ford Ranger

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The boys out at David’s Farm are back in the field, not too far from the Astro Van if I recognize that truck with the elevated seats correctly, and today they’re trying to cold start a 1986 Ford Ranger.

Now, naturally, trying to cold-start a twenty four year old vehicle covered with snow in literally freezing weather might be contraindicated by most auto manuals and of course good common sense.  But the David’s Farm crew never let a little thing like common sense stop them!

It’s so cold in that car that even the interior has about three inches of snow on it.  But after scraping off the hood, and the driver’s seat, and hooking up their new battery, the David’s Farm bunch is ready to give it a try.

Can they pull it off?  Well, you know I never tell you here–you have to watch the video for that one.  Needless to say, it will be a hilarious and illuminating trip all the same.

Cold Starting A 1992 GMC Astro Van

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

We’re neck deep in January, folks, and it’s freaking COLD out there.  I went to fill my birdfeeder the other day and my hands very nearly stuck to the coffee can I was using to transport the seed in.

And we all know what the cold can do to car batteries and old cars, and what it can do especially well to old cars WITH old car batteries.  So it’s definitely a laugh that a couple of guys are going to try and cold start a 1992 GMC Astro Van.

That’s almost a twenty year old van, folks–it could walk into a bar and it might well not get carded ordering a scotch, though it’d probably have to take it unleaded.  Anyway, it’s minus ten out there that day–and that’s minus ten FAHRENHEIT, so for foreign readers that’s actually up around minus twenty three Celsius.  Unless it’s the other way around, and then it’s fourteen degrees Fahrenheit, which is still cold but nowhere near so impressive.

Anyway, the cold start begins, and will you ever be surprised at what happens!  Check out the video below.

Cold-Starting A Chevy–These Guys Really Do It

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

You know, when you think about cold-starting a vehicle, you think maybe about starting a car that’s been in a garage for a while.  Or maybe an unheated garage.  You don’t really think–or at least I never thought–about cold-starting a car that’s got snow on it and has been sitting outside in a scrap yard for who knows how long.

Well, we’ve got video footage today from the wilds of Canada, where a couple canny Canucks decide to try and start some Chevys in deep cold, like -9 degrees cold.  And I’m reasonably sure they’re talking Celsius, which would put it around -20 Fahrenheit.

Considering that when they took to the first Chevy and discovered that the door itself had frozen shut, you knew this had to be a seriously cold day.  In fact, there was a layer of snow on the Chevy’s hood, making it pretty clear that this wasn’t doctored.

Will the cars start?  Check out the video below and see!
