Transformers Grace Chicago Auto Show

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Not that they will really transform or walk around the Chicago Auto show, the new cast of cars from General Motors that will be appearing in the Transformers’ sequel “Revenge of the Fallen” will be gracing the festivities. And heading the list is the “Bumblebee” Camaro which many would recall as the last car form that Bumblebee turned into.

Joining the orange Camaro in Chicago will be other characters from the film in their car forms. New additions to the sequel brandishing a GM badge include a 2010 Chevy Volt called Jolt, a Chevy Spark called Skids and a Trax concept called Mudflat (together known as the Twins), and a character called Sideswipe based on the still-yet-to-be-revealed Corvette Centennial Concept.

GM didn’t specify in its press release (included after the jump) which characters are accompanying Bumblebee to Chicago, but the venue at McCormick Place is one of the largest exposition centers in the world, so the more Transformers the merrier.

Chevy Spark

Chevy Spark

The latest 2010 vehicle to leak out of the impending Detroit Auto Show is the Chevy Spark, the production version of the Chevy Beat concept car. The Chevy Spark, a sub-compact hybrid meant to compete with tiny Euro-cars like the Smart Car and the Toyota Yaris, will be able to go 40 miles on electricity alone.

According to GM’s Global Product Development VP Bob Lutz, “Electricity is one of our best opportunities to displace gasoline and reduce our dependence on petroleum.” GM got a lot of bad publicity with the release of the now widely-viewed 2006 documentary Who Killed the Electric Car, which chronicled GM’s creation and subsequent destruction of the totally electric EV1 in the 1990s—a move seen by some as an attempt to undercut California emissions standards. The 2010 Chevy Spark, if it actually makes it into production this year, could be Gm’s chance to redeem itself.
