What you see above is the recently announced Dodge Challenger set to race in the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series. The car will actually race in 4 different races in the 2010 series; Daytona, Michigan, Richmond and Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

As you can see, Dodge Motorsports made it very easy to tell the vehicle is based on the Challenger, keeping the front of the car looking very production like.

Sure, the Chevy Camaro has outsold the Ford Mustang for the 3rd consecutive month but the same could not be said of the Toyota Prius. In fact, Kicking Tires reports that the Prius sold more than the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger combined.

Those numbers being 18,886, 8,680, 6,289 and 1,132 for the Prius, Camaro, Mustang and Challenger, respectively.

Now this shouldn’t come as a surprise to, well, anyone and will most likely prove itself to be a reoccurring trend considering rising gas prices and the fact that the Prius sips gas while the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger guzzle it.

Hurst Dodge Challenger

One of the most recognized and revered names in automobile history, Hurst Performance Vehicles, announced the legendary black and gold colors are once more available on the Hurst/Hemi-Challenger. The legendary colors offered on these beautiful cars pay homage to the original Hurst Muscle Cars which were produced in white and gold and in some rare cases, black and gold. “Over the last 50 years Hurst has been a player in almost every segment of the automotive “go-fast” industry with the best shifters and some of the coolest cars ever,” said Nate Shelton, Chairman of Hurst Performance. “We consider it an honor and a privilege to continue the Hurst legend with the black and gold colors. I can’t wait for each of you to see this car…it’s so cool I personally bought one for myself.”

The black and gold and the white and gold Challengers are available in performance stages. The Series 2 vehicles are available through participating Dodge dealers, although Series 3, 4 and 5 vehicles are only available from Hurst Performance Vehicles.

2009 Dodge ChallengerR/T really comes alive when taking off from a dead stop thus reveals its drag racing lineage. This car a relatively wide, long and heavy and when you get behind the wheel you feel the plain largeness of it. Once inside, the car is likewise big and bold, though it lacks some the character of the exterior. However the front seats are have some of the most comfortable you’ll find.

Unfortunately the rear seats leave a lot to be desired for those with long legs but they would perfectly suitable for children and smaller adults. On the road the Challenger is not going to navigate the twists like a sports car, but it’ll go as fast as you’ve got the guts to push it. There’s not much in the way of the car’s equipment and features to report on, but honestly it’s a muscle car just drive it.

Dodge Challenger R/T

The latest surprise at the ongoing Detroit Auto Show is a 1970s-style Dodge Challenger that Dodge quietly announced will be introduced later this month. At a time when electrical concept cars and new hybrid mutations are on everyone’s mind, Dodge dared to evoke the good old days of American Muscle cars with a special edition Challenger that is sure to have a broad appeal in any economy. The Challenger R/T Classic will be offered initially in Hemi Orange and Torred and then in late February a B5 Blue edition will debut, along with other Challenger colors. The Hemi will deliver a heady 376 hp when mated to the six-speed manual transmission, while the automatic transmission version will still hit a not-too shabby 372 hp.

Dodge was cagey about the details, saying only that they would be announced later in the week, but from the looks of it, Dodge fans will gladly wait, if impatiently. The Dodge Challenger R/T will feature racing stripes (of course) and will be the only Challenger R/T with a working hood scoop. Stay tuned.

Dodge EV Concept

Would you believe that a 268 horsepower electric powered Dodge concept wearing a Lotus body could beat a new Dodge Challenger SRT-8?

Well in a recent short race from a stop during a recent show-off session of the new Dodge EV, that was exactly what happened.

The Rose Bowl parking lot was the site of the showdown between high-performance and high technology, and the result helped to secure the idea that not all electric vehicles are just for low-cost commuting.  So many companies have turned to hybrid and electric vehicles as a solution for “responsible efficient transportation”, that the enthusiasts’ standpoint has been forgotten.

The alternative power vehicles are a great alternative for those who only use their car to get from point A to point B, but for many of us, driving is an enjoyable experience, and the Dodge EV plans to prove that electric vehicles can provide the same fun as a combustion engine powered vehicle.

The Dodge Challenger is one good looking car. A good alternative to Ford’s Mustang, the Challenger comes in hot. The 2009 Dodge Challenger convertible is set to appear at at SEMA. Unfortunately Dodge is not going to produce it officially so you’d have to get someone to tear down your Challenger and transform it into a convertible.

It costs $16,000 to do that but if you have that spare money around the house you should definitely go for it. There’s a 6.1 liter Hemi V8 inside that beauty which will get you around 560 hp and 690 Nm.
