The celebrated Car Allowance Rebate System is starting to show the fine prints which most motorists failed to look at. There are some small bits of highlights that people have forgotten to look into and this includes the higher rates for car insurance.

Apparently, when this CARS program was signed into law, much of the focus was into the amount they could get for their old cars. However, insurance premiums were not even considered nor mentioned by most motorists. Thanks to a new device, we may soon see a rash of cars probably thinking for themselves. This was revealed as Saga Car Insurance is reportedly checking out the new device called the Cohda intelligent transport system.

The technology uses a GPS locator and a chip that allows cars to communicate their speed and location, 10 times per second over a radio frequency, to other similarly equipped vehicles within a 500ft radius. The device will alert drivers if, for example, a car jumps a red light, or advise them when it is unsafe to overtake. If it detects the potential for a collision, the system can give an audible warning or take the wheel if the driver’s reactions prove too slow.

This certainly sounds like an interesting development in the world of car technology. Never before have we seen such an enhancement which should help bring down the number of car accidents and violations that has been growing in number.

But the downside is that with the use of such devices, drivers may become overly reliant on them, making driving skills deteriorate. With that, you have to wonder if age limits would still be imposed or drunk people can leave the driving to the device.

Well, until we see it coming out, all we can do is wait and see. Whatever happens, there will certainly be restrictions surrounding it.

Saga Car Insurance briefs us this time on what the car scrappage scheme is all about. Areas such as which vehicles are included in the scheme and how much you can get for it are once again enumerated to help people consider the pricing factor and discounts should they decide to get a new vehicle.

How the scheme is funded
Approximately half the cash incentive for each sale will come from the Government, whilst the car manufacturers themselves will pay out the remaining £1,000. The car manufacturers will have to sign up to the scheme to take advantage of the offer, whilst dealers will take care of all the paperwork, as well as arranging for the old car to be scrapped.

The conditions
All scrappage cars must have a valid MOT and be registered with the DVLA. Also, the owner must have a UK address and been the registered keeper for at least a year. The new car must be sold only to the person who is offering the scrappage car and be a brand new UK specification vehicle.

Divided opinions
But it would appear that ‘Bangers for Cash’ is already proving to be controversial. One reason being the fact that you can trade your old car in for any new car or van, not just low pollution models, and the second is that the scrappage allowance will be available on all new cars – not just those built in the UK.

OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics monitors your vehicle’s key operating systems and will tell you exactly when you need to change your oil, eliminating unnecessary oil changes.
2. Keep your tires inflated. Pumping up your tires to the proper PSI is the easiest, most cost-efficient way to reduce gasoline use. OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics also runs monthly checks of your tire pressure.
3. Lighten your load. Every extra 100 pounds of weight you carry can strip away 1 to 2 percent of fuel efficiency. Take out those sand bags you might have added to the trunk for winter driving, remove the bike or ski rack if you aren’t using it, and unload any other unnecessary cargo. However, make sure to leave the essentials, such as your emergency safety kit.
4. Don’t idle. Picking the kids up from school? Waiting out front while someone runs into the store? If you are stopped for more than 30 seconds, shut the car off to avoid wasting gas.
5. Easy on the gas pedal. If you accelerate hard at green lights and when traffic lets up, you might want to think twice. Jerky, stop and start driving can hurt your gas mileage.

People who are thinking of getting a new Ford are in for a treat. Aside from possibly foregoing car insurance, they can expect to drive safer and worry less with the new body and paint technology announced by Ford Motors. Ford’s new industry-first Paint and Body Technology Center brings repair and crash safety experts together to drive down auto insurance costs by making vehicles more damage-resistant and less expensive to repair.

The new Ford Paint and Body Technology Center in Inkster will leverage the combined expertise of Ford’s repair and safety experts, auto repair technicians and insurance companies. Ford’s goal is developing affordable, innovative vehicle designs, replacement parts and repair procedures that lower the cost to fix a damaged vehicle.

“Our bottom line for this new initiative is simple: If your vehicle costs less to repair, it’s going to cost less to insure,” said Darryl Hazel, president, Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD). “The work Ford will perform at the new Paint and Body Technology Center will help reduce insurers’ repair costs so they can drive down auto insurance premiums for consumers.”
