Those looking to buy a luxury SUV hybrid only have a bit longer to wait as the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid was recently spotted testing in South Carolina.

We have no official word from BMW on a price or release date but the person test driving the car told HybirdCars that the first production models of the X6 ActiveHybrid are beginning to roll off the production line and should hit dealerships by year’s end.

They also suggest that the car will be right around the $70,000 range but we’ll wait until word from BMW to pass judgement.

The key towards balancing the overall weight of cars depend on what the car is composed of. But take away all the peripherals inside of it, it all boils down to the bare boned car. And with that in mind, the type of steel used can perhaps be improved to create a lighter vehicle.

In a study released today by the Automotive Applications Council of AISI’s Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI), researchers with Ducker Worldwide estimated that the use of advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) in 2009 model year light vehicles increased by more than four percent of total body weight from 2007, while the average weight per vehicle decreased by 163 pounds.

While more than half of the vehicles produced worldwide contain some amount of AHSS, the new BMW X6 leads the way with 32 percent of its body structure and closures manufactured from AHSS. Other new models with above-average AHSS body content include the new Chevrolet Traverse, Ford F-150 and Chrysler Town and Country.

According to the study, weight reduction will account for at least 25 percent of the necessary improvement in fuel economy, with advances in powertrain and other technologies – such as drag reduction, low-roll resistance tires and a 42-volt electrical system – making up the difference.

For BMW’s proper use of steel that adhere to market demand and safety, the BMW X6 research and development team has been awarded the annual Automotive Annual Excellence Award. The award was presented today at the Great Designs in Steel seminar in Livonia, Mich.

The award recognizes individuals or teams from automakers, suppliers or the academic community who embrace innovation and make significant contributions to the advancement of steel in the automotive marketplace.

“The BMW X6 utilizes steel solutions that add to its unique, sporty design and meet new crash-test requirements, without sacrificing safety or increasing its weight,” said Ron Krupitzer, vice president of automotive applications for AISI’s SMDI. “BMW’s innovative use of ultra high-strength steel technologies has resulted in a vehicle that is safe, lightweight, environmentally friendly and offers the best fuel economy in its class.”

BMW uses unique processing technologies and several complex, ultra high-strength steel grades in its design. The vehicle features a steel structure and steel side frames, panels, rear and B-Pillar reinforcements and longitudinal rear member, which improve cost, performance, reduce weight and meet Insurance Institute for Highway Safety side-impact crash test requirements.

German based manufacturer BMW is pushing through with its M-badged BMW series and it looks like BMW lovers are in for a treat. The 2010 BMW X6 M and X5 M feature an all-wheel drive and a V8 engine paired with an automatic transmission as well. Add an optimized chassis/suspension setup and a stronger rear-wheel bias to the all-wheel-drive system for greater agility and the new model seems to be a dream machine to have.

With the force-fed V-8 and active rear differential of its sportier sibling, the X5 M should experience a greater performance improvement over the regular model compared with the X6 M. However, given the X6’s lower center of gravity and more-aggressive demeanor, expect the hatchback-coupe on stilts to be more playful when the road begins to twist and turn.

A vehicle that is surely being awaited for release, the BMW M models are bound to be a good choice for car addicts investing heavily in luxury vehicles. There is no specific date on when the X5 M and X6 M will be released although 2010 seems to be the feasible year to wait for them. They are expected to be valued at $100K once made available in the car market.
