Qatar Automobiles has announced the all new 2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sports today, offering an ideal vehicle for the family. The 2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sports features a 7 seat vehicle bundled with power and performance that should be suited for its class. The Mitsubishi Pajero has been a familiar vehicle for off-road and large family use and this new offering should provide another option for people looking at SUV vehicles in the market. The 2009 Mitsubishi Pajero Sports is expected to make its way at local Qatar showrooms. No word on pricing and on whether it would be available internationally.

If you weren’t aware, the US isn’t the only one moving towards a greener future in terms of automobiles. China, especially, with their extremely large population and extremely high pollution level needs to get their move on and introduce some fuel efficient cars.

The country may be doing just that as BYD has recently stricken a deal with a major Chinese automaker to supply them with automobile batteries. Autoblog reports that these batteries will be good for up to 2,000 charges meaning they could theoretically power a car 375,000 miles throughout their lifetime.

We’ll keep you posted as more news on these batteries, and the cars they will be used in, is made known.

The fourteenth annual Greenwich Concours d’ Elegance will be held on June 6th and June 7th at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich, Connecticut. Hailed as one of the top events of its kind in the country, the Greenwich Concours helps benefit Americares, the international relief organization. The event also includes vintage motorcycles and aircraft. Saturday’s Concours d’Elegance will feature American automobiles from 1900 to present.

Sunday’s Concours Europa will feature European/import automobiles from 1900 to present. Many of the cars to be shown each day are rare, limited-production, or one-off vehicles. In addition, each day there is a book alley, galleries of automotive art and memorabilia, workshops and demonstrations, and interesting exhibits of exciting new cars. Admission is $20.00 for one day or $30.00 for both days. Kids under 12 get in free.

May is EcoDriving month hence a call for motorists to try and improve their driving skills such as improving fuel consumption and reducing the carbon footprint use. To mark the first EcoDriving month, the program is partnering with Indy Goes Green, sponsored by the racing team of Nelson Philippe. The program raises awareness about how to be an EcoDriver, and aims to be the first-ever carbon neutral Indy team.

“The key to EcoDriving is that anyone can do it, in any vehicle, and best of all, it’s easy,” said Dave McCurdy, president and CEO of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. “Now, as the summer driving season gets underway, EcoDriving month is the ideal time for each of us to renew our green driving habits.”

During National EcoDriving Month, the Auto Alliance and its 11 global automakers are working to educate consumers about the benefits of EcoDriving through www.EcoDrivingUSA.com. Practicing EcoDriving produces the highest mileage from every single vehicle, regardless of size or age–potentially affecting the United States’ entire fleet of 245 million automobiles. As a result, the possible benefits of the program are significant, and many fuel-saving EcoDriving practices are surprisingly simple, such as:

• The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that using cruise control for 10,000 of the miles driven in a year could save a driver nearly $200 and more than 60 gallons of fuel.
• Observing the speed limit and not exceeding 60 mph, where legally allowed, can improve mileage by up to 23 percent.
• Traffic lights are often synchronized so that a motorist driving at a specific speed will pass through a series of green lights without stopping. Driving at a steady speed can help drivers avoid red lights, therefore keeping their vehicles moving more efficiently.

Autoweek Magazine has its own initiative for Earth Day and this comes in the form of devoting its first issue on the subject of Green Automobiles. Today, AutoWeek remains the automotive authority, continuing this legacy with its special Earth Day issue on April 20, 2009.

The special issue includes coverage of Italdesign-Giugiaro’s Namir, as well as first drives of the Chevrolet Cruze, Honda FCX Clarity, and the All-New Toyota Prius.

Nissan Motors has reportedly prototyped a solid oxide fuel cell which will be mounted on an electric vehicle to help in the charging process of batteries for vehicles in the future.

SOFCs are highly efficient but have problems starting up. Therefore, they have been believed to be appropriate for cogeneration but not so much so for automobiles. And PEFCs (polymer electrolyte fuel cell) have been the leading candidates for automotive fuel cells.

Nissan prototyped a stack of five donut-shaped cells and confirmed a gross output of 54W using H2 as fuel. It translates to an output density of 0.37kW/L. The prototype was strong enough to endure the temperature change from room temperature to 600°C in 60 minutes and a heavy load operation at 1kW/L for 30 minutes.

The Jackson Automotive Group has added another car line to its fold, taking in Subaru as its latest franchise which already includes the Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. Apparently their basis for adding the Subaru franchise was because of their stellar automobiles and commitment to the environment.

Statistics show that 95% of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today. With advanced suspension solutions and top safety ratings, Subaru produces some of the most consumer friendly vehicles on the road. Subaru’s U.S. plant is a smoke-free facility and is also designated as a wildlife preserve.

Jackson Automotive is excited about this new addition to their family. Jimmy Jackson had this to say about the acquisition: “Subaru is a very high quality, eco-friendly car and should fit in nicely with Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.”

Audi finds itself in great position to perhaps cover a wider market as it is bound to get more attention thanks to the pullout of major car manufacturers like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler at the Super Bowl. Despite the current economic crisis, Audi is advertising at the Super Bowl for the second year in a row. This year, they will be highlighting the Audi A6 luxury sedan.

Audi’s advertising agency, San Francisco-based Venables Bell & Partners, created the ad, which was shot on-location in Los Angeles. The agency painstakingly recreated different eras in American history with costuming, lighting, film stock and period-specific automobiles to create a stunning depiction of the different eras explored in the ad.
