The NHSTA has recently announced that they will begin selling lightly crash tested, low mileage vehicles. Of course, the fact that they have been crash tested will make them undriveable.

It’s been just six weeks, but GM has officially announced that it will no longer sell new cars at auction on the auction site eBay, instead choosing to focus on “other marketing efforts”, or, those that’ll help keep the automaker from completely tanking.

Neither GM nor eBay was prepared to reveal sales numbers, but going over the website by standard channels revealed an absolute wasteland of sales, and chances are, this is what ultimately killed the deal.

However, GM will continue to sell used cars on eBay, as will several other manufacturers, and both eBay and GM were quick to mention that their involvement with each other was far from over.

GM does have other marketing irons in the fire, such as their recently announced sixty day money back guarantee.  So it’s a fair bet that they’ll carry right on until the day they finally crash and burn, which actually looks more likely with every passing day.

Earlier this month we let you know that GM would officially begin selling brand new vehicles on eBay this month. Well, the programs been underway for a while now with some not-so-great results. It seems that the partnership has only generated 45 sales in the 9 days that the program has been live. To put this into perspective, there are currently 16,000+ vehicles listed on the site.

The program is far from a failure, however, as eBay says the new GM site has generated over 630,000 visits along with an additional 960,000 searches for listed GM vehicles.

We’ll just have to give the program a bit of time to run its course before we deem it a success or failure as this whole idea of bidding on brand new cars is still a very new concept.

Those looking for the ultimate project car will be happy to hear that a 1985 Ford Mustang GT has appeared on eBay. Now, if its 5.0 liter V8 isn’t enough to buy you over, how about the fact that it only has 99 miles on the odometer?

That’s right, this car has reportedly been in climate controlled storage somewhere in Ottumwa, Iowa ever since it was purchased back in 1985. As for a price, well the bid currently sits at $11,600 with the reserve not yet met so there is really no telling how much this seller wants for the car.

Our friends over at Bornrich have recently let us know that the above custom made Rolls-Royce Star of India has been put on auction for a staggering €10 million ($14million+ USD). This particular vehicle features a 7.7-liter engine, custom interior, additional headlights and had previously called the Rolls-Royce museum its home.

If this vehicle sells for the $14 million+ that its bid is at, it will effectively be the most valuable car in the entire world. On that note, don’t expect to see it driving around your neighborhood streets anytime soon.

Jon Lauckner, VP of Global Program Management over at GM, let us know yesterday that we wouldn’t officially know a price for the Chevy Volt until mid-to-late 2010. Even earlier than that, we learned that GM was inking a deal with eBay to allow consumers the ability to bid on brand new cars. But is there a connection between the two?

According to Chevrolet Brand Manager, Ed Peper, yes, as in a recent interview with GM-Volt.com he confirmed that GM is pondering if they should or shouldn’t sell the car on eBay.

If they do this, it would make the Chevy Volt’s pricing extremely competitive as it wouldn’t necessarily be predefined. Would you buy a Chevy Volt if they put it on eBay?

Now here’s an idea: New car auctions. That’s right, a new partnership between GM and eBay will introduce new car auctions as GM inches its way out of bankruptcy.

Below is an exerpt from the press release:

“We’re also working on new ways to make car buying more convenient for our customers, including an innovative new partnership with eBay in California to revolutionize how people buy vehicles online,” Henderson said. “Customers will be able to bid on actual vehicles just like they do in an eBay auction, including the option of choosing a predetermined ‘buy it now’ price. We’ll be testing this and other ideas with our dealers over the next few weeks, and hope to expand and build upon them in the coming months. In all cases, our goal is to make the shopping and buying process as easy as possible for GM customers – on their time and their terms. Stay tuned.”

The real question here, however, is which model(s) will be able to bid on? Will GM offer its entire lineup for online auction? Either way, this is a pretty awesome idea and is sure to spark some interest in GM, which is exactly what they need.

1896 Benz 5HP Victoria

Bonhams Motoring Department is the biggest auction house to hold scheduled auction sales of vintage and classic motor cars and car memorabilia. On Saturday, July 18 at Henley-on-Thames, the auction house will be selling vehicles from a world-class collection of early vehicles – The Ward Brothers’ Collection. The brothers, Daniel and Toby Ward, have accumulated a unique collection of early vehicles.

The star of the sale is a 1901 Panhard-Levassor 2.4-litre Forward Control Cab Phaeton (£200,000-£250,000), the only one of its kind still known in existence. Another honored veteran for sale is the 1896 Benz 5hp Victoria (£140,000-£180,000). Other highlights include a multihued 1899 Panhard-Levassor Wagonette (£120,000-£150,000), the ex-Alf Briggs and Eric Houseley 1928 McEvoy-JAP motorcycle with a 980cc vee-twin engine (£120,000-£150,000), and a 1911 RMC Seabrook 20hp Roadster that won the Essex Motor Hill Climb in 1911 (£25,000-£35,000).

Ford GT

The Ford GT is a mid-engined supercar that was produced from 2003 to 2006 and was inspired by the original GT40 Le Mans race car from the 1960s era. Two very early-build Ford GT supercars – number six and seven – are set to be auctioned off this August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The two up for auction are quite rare. Ford held on to most of its early-build models, including these two, which were used by the car maker for promotional purposes and have never been registered to an individual.

Organizers of the auction have disclosed that the cars are expected to sell for between $150,000 and $200,000. Some of the proceeds from the auction will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. One of the cars is white with blue livery and has 7,765 miles while the other is a red with white livery and has 4,065 miles on the odometer.

You thought the Bugatti Veyron’s $1,000,000+ asking price was a lot? Check this out — The above car, a 1957 Ferrari 250TR, was recently auctioned off at RM Auction’s annual Ferrari Leggende e Passione auction last weekend. There were only 22 of these cars ever built and this particular one has been restored to the fullest extent.

That’s all fine and dandy but the real thing you need to focus on is its final selling price, €9,020,000 or about $12.2 million.

So remember, next time you see someone bragging about their expensive car be sure to tell them that there exists a $12 million+ Ferrari, that will be sure to shut them up.

1937 Bugatti Type 57S Coupe

Bonham’s Paris auction recently sold a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S coupe for $4.4 million. The startling thing wasn’t its rusty trim. faded paint and worn interior – it’s that the car’s condition likely hiked up its selling price. A decade ago, a buyer probably would have sent this Bugatti in for a megabuck restoration. According to Rob Sass, a vintage-car expert whose writing has appeared in the New York Times and Sports Car Market magazine, a sympathetic mechanicals-only restoration is the trend these days. “Under the circumstances, restoring the car might well be cause for regret,” notes Sass. Some of this may be due to the influence of PBS’s popular Antiques Roadshow, where objects excavated from attics and basements are brought to experts who often warn owners about cleaning their finds – and possibly polishing off thousands of dollars.

Does that mean every rusty heap is now a preservation-class classic? Hardly, it is the cars that were rare, valuable, and important to begin with that are most valued, cars whose histories are worth preserving in their unaltered, often imperfect, original states.

The Lamborghini Reventon went on sale last year for around $1,000,000. And get this, there were only 20 made. Probably thought you would never have the chance to even buy one, right?

Wrong, European luxury-marketplace Jameslist apparently has 7 (that’s 35% of all Reventons ever made) listed for sale.

Ranging in prices from €1,250,000 to €1,580,000 the Reventons are appropriately marked up. Hey, at least they aren’t going for €2,000,000, right?
