Idle stop and go technology will be the next green wave to hit the smaller, more fuel efficient cars being designed world wide. Later this year, Korean auto manufacturer Kia Motors will debut the technology in its latest model of the Cee’d (available only in Europe). The idle system turns the engine off when the vehicle comes to a stop, with the engine restarting once the driver depresses the clutch to engage first gear.
Although stop-start technology does nothing for highway fuel economy, it can offer up to a 15-per-cent boost in city use, and it also reduces emissions. American manufacturers are also looking at idle stop and go technology, which is expected to be standard on most gasoline powered automobiles by the end of 2010. Kia says it will begin applying idle stop and go technology to its American cars late in 2010.
