Mitsubishi has been a familiar fixture at the Dakar Rally. But it seems that will all change, at least for this year. Mitsubishi has officially withdrawn from this year’s all Cross Country Rallying, a big blow in the world of motor sports.
“The sudden deterioration of the global economy made it necessary for the company to focus its resources more tightly,” it said in a statement.
The Japanese team has won the rally a total of 12 times, including seven consecutive victories until the 2009 race. Other Japanese makers have also been scaling down their motor sports activities to cope with the auto industry crisis.
