Just yesterday we let you know that GM was gearing up to announce the mileage rating for their much publicized Chevy Volt. Well today, just on cue, they have announced the information; the Chevy Volt will get 230mpg.
This comes as news after the EPA has determined exactly how to rate extended-range all-electrics such as the Volt who say that the car will consume 25kWh for every 100 miles driven. Couple that with the minimal gas tank featured on the car and that is how they came to the 230 mpg rating.
The EPA hopes to fine tune this method of rating and will get back to us when they figure out what consumers are more likely to get during everyday use.

I’m interested to see how this car fares with consumers. Personally, I don’t see it really taking off despite the hype it’s been getting. Why not? Well, for most early adopters to get into it, there should be at least one of two selling points, since it’s a hybrid:
1. Eco-friendliness and/or
2. Affordability.
The way electricity is produced on our grid today, electric cars actually “produce” more CO2 than their gas-powered siblings, all things equal. This will become less of an issue as our power grid evolves over the next few years, but for now that’s how it is (at least according to http://www.newsy.com/videos/all_charged_up_over_the_volt).
Also, one reason the Prius became so popular (at least early on) was that it made economic sense. The Volt, at least for now, doesn’t seem to for most people (according to http://business.theatlantic.com/2009/08/gms_volt_offers_amazing_mileage_but_at_what_cost.php).
Still, we’ll see. Perhaps the advertising can gloss over those issues and the Volt can still become a success. But in my opinion, it won’t be because of any marvels of engineering.
