The Tokyo Motor Show this fall is shaping up to be a lot less crowded than usual. Ford Motor Company, and Volvo, the Swedish unit of Ford Motor Company, have both announced they will not participate in this year’s show. “We have evaluated our participation at motor shows for 2009 to see how we can make the most out of our resources, and this year we decided not to participate at Tokyo,” Volvo spokeswoman Maria Bohlin said.
Chrysler has also pulled out of the show due to economic concerns created by the global automotive sales slowdown. Mazda, which is now only 13% Ford-owned (as opposed to 33% last year, has announced that it will participate if the show goes on. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association will decide by early next month whether to postpone the show. If the event is canceled, the next Tokyo Motor Show would be in 2011.
