If you’ve ever wondered how to convert a gasoline powered vehicle to an electrically powered one, the good news is, you can buy any number of detailed, excellent books that will tell you, step by step, how to do it. Engineers Seth Leitman and Bob Brant’s “Build Your Own Electric Vehicle” will get you there and then some. Brant, who actually worked on the Lunar Rover, goes far beyond providing instructions (although he does provide those, and in language most people who work on cars can easily understand), including lots of general information on EVs (electric vehicles), their limitations and strengths, insurance and licensing issues, and much more.
On the down side, if you’ve never lifted an engine or done any significant repair work on the vehicle you want to convert, you will probably discover that the conversion process is beyond the scope of your ability. Don’t let that stop you from reading this book though–lots of basic, detailed information on alternative energy and the challenges in developing it are contained in these pages. “Build Your Own Electric Vehicle” is a good basic resource. It is available at Amazon.com for $29.95
