According to a new report, the next generation of Volkswagen Beetle is said to be released next year. The new version will have an updated exterior which will still look a lot like the classic Beetle — just the way it should be. The car is expected to go on sale in May 2011, with an unveiling later this year.
Ever since it introduced the Scirocco R, Volkswagen has been rumored to be building a performance division, or R-division. It has finally confirmed that it is indeed establishing the R-division as the performance segment of its cars, and the first cars to be released are the Passat CC R and the Jetta R as well.
VW’s official site in Germany has listed the price of the newly unveiled Touareg, which will be a pricey one. If you want the regular, V6 diesel Touareg, you’ll have to fork just over 50,000 Euro, the hybrid version however, costs almost 75,000 Euro — with the same engine and the addition of an electric motor.
Volkswagen has unveiled the little brother to the Golf GTi, the Polo GTi. The car will feature a supercharged 1.4-liter V4, which produces 178HP, just 22 shy of GTi’s 200. The Polo GTi will feature a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox as well, and is set to debut in Europe later this year. No news of a US version.
The Canadians seem to have a lot of love for the Volkwagen Golf GTI, as they’ve named it the Car of The Year 2010. The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada named it the “best new car”, as voted by 70 auto journalists from the country.
Remember that old game, PunchBuggy? Sometimes called SlugBug?
You know, that game that annoyed your mother so deeply when you played with friends or siblings in the back seat because it required you to punch each other with frantic glee every time you identified a Volkswagen?
Well, Volkswagen apparently knows it’s part of a game that celebrates casual brutality on the part of children, because it’s just released this commercial, called “PunchDub.” The end will feature the greatest surprise of all as Tracy Morgan gets into the act. We mentioned it briefly a few days ago in a rundown of Super Bowl ads–but here’s the whole thing.
This is hilarious stuff, really, and a great advertisement for Volkswagen. Nothing like seizing on a little piece of everyone’s childhood and running amok with it. We’ve got the video below, and I can assure you that it’s as big a hoot as you remember, and then some, especially by the time you get to the end. There are lots of little surprises here, so keep your eyes front.
How about that, a recall post that isn’t about Toyota! Actually, it’s about one of the most competent auto makers out there, VW, which has announced that it recalled 200,000 cars in Brazil over faulty bearings. The recall only includes two models, both local models, the Gol and Voyage.
Volkswagen has unveiled the 2011 Touareg, which features an all new base making the big SUV almost 500 lbs lighters — quite an achievement. Furthermore, it features VW’s first mass produced hybrid powertrain, where the direct injected 3.0 liter V6 is combined with an electric motor, delivering mileage close to 29 mpg.
With the Super Bowl going on this weekend, I’m sure we are all anticipating those commercials. Here is what is going to be seen this Sunday as far as automakers are concerned:
Audi: Since the A3 TDI won the Green Car of the Year at the LA Auto Show, this ad will focus on the “Green Police”. (Still from the ad on the right.)
Dodge: They will have an ad, but there is no word on what is on it.
Hyundai: The ad will highlight the 2011 Sonata.
Honda: Expect to see the Crosstour.
Kia: Same as Dodge.
Volkswagen: Did you ever play “Slugbug”, where you hit someone if you see a VW bug? Well, the ad will focus on that.
Volkswagen is set to announce a new performance division for their vehicles, simply called “R”. This is mostly to compete with other brands who have their own divisions, BMW has M, Audi has Quattro, and Mercedes has its AMG division. And now, Volkswagen, not known really to make performance vehicles, will be launching their own brand. VW recently announced the Golf R.
