Follow these and you'll have so much left over money you'll be able to buy that yacht you always wanted. Maybe a toy yacht but still...

We have taken the liberty of reproducing said list below again, courtesy of The Bachelor Guy:<bquote>

1. Check Your Tires
Tire pressure changes with changing temperatures, so it's important to check the
pressure after all weather changes. An under-inflated tire not only
reduces the life of the tire, but can cause your gas mileage to plummet
by as much as 15 percent. (And they recommend rotating tires roughly
every 5,000-10,000 miles to extend the tread life. With or without a
pit crew.)
2. Change the Air Filter
Dust and other impurities getting into the combustion chambers of your engine's cylinders results in wasted gas and weaker engine performance. Replacing a clogged filter can improve mileage by as much as
10 percent, which translates into more money in your pocket every gallon. Change the air filter every six months, more often if you live in a dusty location.
3. Lighten Your Load
For every 100 pounds of extra weight, your mileage goes down by two
percent. Take all that unnecessary junk out of the trunk, and while
you're back there, check the air pressure on the spare.
The rest after the break.</bquote>

4. Check Your Spark Plugs
Spark plugs fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles. That's a lot of heat
and wear and tear. Dirty spark plugs cause misfiring, which wastes fuel
by as much as 30 percent.

5. Make Sure Your Cap is Tight
According to NASCAR's Tech Institute, nearly 20 percent of vehicles
have gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing altogether, allowing
that high-priced octane to vaporize, wasting some 147 million gallons
of gas every year.

6. Don't Be Idle
Obviously, sitting in bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go traffic is a
tremendous waste of fuel. Traffic.com recommends using the real-time
traffic function available on many newer GPS systems to avoid backups
and find clear routes, and updating the system's maps to find the
quickest way to your destination.

The all-new Ford Ka microcar, which Ford Motor Co. sells in Europe and is considering bringing to America, will appear in the new James Bond movie, "Quantum of Solace."

In the movie, which opens in the United States on Nov. 7, the Ka is featured in a unique metallic gold paint with a funky combination of exterior graphics and interior trim.

The special "Quantum of Solace" Ka was created by Ford of Europe's design team, in collaboration with the movie's Oscar award-winning production designer, Dennis Gassner. The Ka's cameo continues Ford of Europe's relationship with the James Bond films, following the debut appearance of the latest Ford Mondeo, in the 2006 blockbuster, "Casino Royale."

In a statement promoting the product placement, Ford of Europe's chief operating officer, Stephen Odell, said, "We are delighted that the launch of the film coincides with the launch of such a significant new model for Ford of Europe."

Many Americans have voiced their desire on automotive Web sites for Ford to bring a Ka to the United States. Whether that will happen remains to be seen.

With consumers seeking out affordable, fuel-efficient cars, U.S. sales of the smallest cars on the market were up 32% through July, compared to the same period a year ago.

Ford does not currently sell a subcompact or microcar in the United States. Its smallest car on the market is the Focus compact car, which is built at Wayne Stamping and Assembly Plant. Sales of the Focus were up 26% through July.

Cadillac is to reveal two key new models today: a dynamic station wagon version of its hit CTS sport sedan and an all-new replacement for its SRX crossover wagon.

The CTS Sport Wagon and new SRX are both expected to go on sale in the first half of next year as 2010 models.

The CTS wagon is vital to Cadillac's plans to boost European sales and attract cutting-edge customers at home in North America. Sport wagons account for around half the sales CTS competitors like the BMW 3- and 5-series and Audi A4 and A6 rack up in key countries like Germany.

"It's gorgeous," said analyst Rebecca Lindland of Global Insight, Lexington, Mass. "And a hero in terms of timing," as rising gasoline prices drive some buyers away from SUVs. "The CTS station wagon could really satisfy the need to combine utility with better fuel economy and wonderful style."

The CTS wagon will feature the 3.6-liter V6 engine that powers the CTS sedan. Cadillac will also offer the wagon with GM's new 250-horsepower 2.9-liter V6 turbodiesel in Europe.

Fuel-efficient diesels also account for more than half of many luxury cars' sales in Europe. The lack of either a diesel or station wagon for the acclaimed CTS severely limited Cadillac's European aspirations.

The Lansing-built 2010 CTS Sport Wagon should go on sale in the United States in spring 2009. Cadillac is to show the car at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance historic car show in California today.

The new V6-powered SRX was designed to compete with luxury crossovers like the Lexus RX 350 and Acura MDX, positioning it to outsell the original SRX.

The 2010 SRX, which borrows its styling from the Provoq concept car that debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, is a better fit for the market than the outgoing model, said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics, a Birmingham forecasting firm.

"To get sales volume, you go after the segment leader, and that's the RX 350," Hall said. The original SRX had an optional V8 and a price range that pushed it to the margins of the luxury crossover market.

"If the vehicle is as good as the CTS, it should easily be able to sell at double the rate of the current SRX," he said. GM sold 22,543 SRXs in 2007. The current SRX comes from Cadillac's Lansing assembly plant, but the new SRX is to be built alongside the upcoming Saab 9-4X crossover at an as-yet-undisclosed assembly plant in North America.

The 2010 SRX will seat five passengers and should reach dealerships in mid-2009.

The vehicle is the first product to come out of Ford's new global development process, which aims to produce global models that are tailored to regional tastes but have the same underpinnings. It's slated to go on sale in stages between now and 2010, starting in Europe.

The Cologne Stamping and Assembly plant is the first Ford assembly facility to build the new car, with production at Ford's Valencia assembly plant in Spain set begin in January.

Ford's Cuautitlan assembly plant in Mexico, which previously made F-Series trucks, is being retooled to build hatchback and sedan models of the Fiesta for the North American market beginning in 2010.

The Fiesta is one of six new models Ford plans to bring to North America from Europe in the coming years, as part of efforts to cut costs and boost its North American car lineup.

Last month, Ford announced plans to retool two U.S. truck factories in Michigan and Kentucky to make global vehicles off the European Focus platform.

The automaker said it expects to manufacture 148,000 Fiestas in the Cologne facility this year. When at full capacity, the plant is expected to produce 1,900 Fiesta and Fusion vehicle per day, Ford said.

Since it was first launched in 1976, Ford said it has sold more than 12 million Fiestas.

Will smaller electric cars with limited speed and range catch on?

It might sound surprising, but all-electric vehicles are already on American roads. They just haven't quite made it to the highway yet.

A growing cottage industry of Neighborhood Electric Vehicle manufacturers is spurring the development of cars like the Zenn, which has reached a state of vehicular enlightenment so advanced it doesn't even need a tail pipe.

"We saw this car in May of '06, and all of us were just freaking out: 'Finally, a car!'" said Steve Mayeda, sales manager at Seattle-based MC Electric Vehicles, which sells 30 percent of Zenn's U.S. inventory, in addition to electric vehicles made by Columbia, Canadian EV, E-Ride and Miles. "Zenn was the first neighborhood electric car that actually looked and felt and drove like a real car. Everything else before that was either a converted golf cart or a car that was built from the ground up."

Mayeda was referring to vehicles like the 36,000 ovoid GEM cars that Chrysler-owned General Electric Motocars has sold worldwide over the last decade. To be fair, the GEM, like most NEVs, is actually more than just a glorified golf cart.

NEVs are silent, have no tailpipe emissions (or tailpipes, for that matter) and plug into electrical outlets like vacuum cleaners. They come in two varieties: Low-Speed Electric Vehicles, which have a top speed of about 25 miles per hour and are restricted to roads where the speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less; and Medium-Speed Electric Vehicles, which reach 35 mph and are allowed on roads with a posted speed of up to 45 mph.

They're exempt from federal safety regulations that mandate impact-absorbing bumpers and airbags. But to be street legal, NEVs must have three-point seat belts, windshields with wipers, headlights, brake lights, rearview mirrors and turn signals. Doors are optional.

The Zenn is among a new generation of NEVs that look like real cars. But a spin around Manhattan in one proves it has some growing to do before it can truly compete with automobiles. (Go to the "slide show" link below to read about how the Zenn held up in Manhattan traffic.)

Cute as a button
The 1,350-pound Zenn, which stands for "Zero Emissions, No Noise," offers a beguiling first impression for those inclined to fawn over bunnies and kittens. But don't let that button-cute persona fool you.

"It's a tough little car," said Ian Clifford, founder and CEO of Zenn Motor Co., based in Toronto, Canada.

He pointed to the fact that in France, the aluminum-frame Zenn has passed all government-mandated safety standards for the quadracycle class of vehicles, which are like NEVs and have a top speed of 30 mph.

Onlookers seemed to like the Zenn, although its matte tones and boxy styling didn't get as many looks as expected. One older gentleman from Switzerland, in high spirits on a nature hike in Central Park, said America would do well to get more Zenn-like vehicles on the road.

Taxi drivers loved the Zenn, too. At traffic lights they shouted questions and comments like, "Hey! What is that? What's the mileage?" and "That's cool, man!" Every one of them said having a 25-mph car in New York City would be "no problem, man."

It seemed like the Zenn was living up to its name. "They're traffic calming," Clifford said, referring to their lack of speed. "And if they do get into a collision, the impact is much less severe." NEVs' slow speeds are also safer for pedestrians, he added.

Dollars and sense
The two-seat Zenn starts at $15,995. The model we drove had options that drove up the price. (Find out what they were and how much more it cost in by clicking on the "slide show" link below.)

Zenns get the equivalent of 254 miles per gallon, Clifford said. It costs less than two cents per mile to drive, based on the average retail rate of electricity in the United States of 10.15 cents per kilowatt-hour. Regular cars cost about 10 cents a mile to drive, according to a 2006 report from the Energy Information Administration.

"We've had no complaints. Everyone loves their car," said MC Electric Vehicles' Mayeda, who co-wrote Washington's House Bill 1820, which allows electric cars to legally attain speeds of up to 35 mph. If Clifford can get his Zenn cars to go a little faster, Mayeda said they'll sell like hotcakes.

"We would be able to sell as many of these cars as they're selling Hondas and Toyotas," Mayeda said. "Even if they made it a $30,000 car, easily we could have Toyota numbers. There's enough people out there who are tired of paying high prices for gas, who don't like buying and supporting foreign oil."

One of the biggest hurdles for NEVs, and all electric vehicles for that matter, is their range on a single charge. With its lead-acid batteries -- just like those used in normal cars -- the Zenn can only go 35 miles on a single charge and takes eight hours to fully recharge. The batteries will fill to 80 percent in four hours.

NEV manufacturers like Zenn Motor Co., British Columbia-based Dynasty Electric Car Corp. and Norwegian-led Think Global argue that most Americans can get by just fine driving a small amount of miles each day at relatively low speeds.

While that remains to be seen, the Federal Highway Administration reports that on average, the longest trips American drivers make each day range in length from 16 miles to visit family or friends to 11 miles for medical purposes. The average American drives 12 miles to work, according to the FHA.

The Urban Transport Fact Book reports that the average "road network speed" in large American cities ranges from 24 mph in New York to 39 mph in Sacramento -- speeds easily accessible by existing electric cars.

Capable Performance Plus Outstanding Fuel Efficiency Equals Excellent Value

TORRANCE, Calif.-- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., announced today that the 2009 Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) will offer an all-new, powerful yet fuel-efficient 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine. When it arrives at dealerships in mid-to-late January, the new Highlander powerplant will be among the best mid-size SUVs in the areas of performance, fuel economy and value.

The new 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine will generate an impressive 187 horsepower at 5,800 RPM and 186 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,100 RPM on regular 87 octane fuel. A dual exhaust manifold will help achieve exceptional low-end torque and maximize its power output. In addition to its performance output, the Highlander equipped with the new four-cylinder will be EPA-rated as an Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEVII) and is expected to be among the leaders in fuel efficiency in the gas mid-size SUV segment. Official EPA fuel efficiency ratings will be announced closer to launch.

The new four-cylinder engine will be mated to an all-new six-speed electronically-controlled automatic overdrive transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). The new transmission will help deliver quiet and smooth performance on par with a V6 and acceleration that is surprisingly quick for a four-cylinder. When equipped with a tow package, the new powerplant will achieve a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

The new engine will come standard on the Highlander grade two-wheel-drive model equipped with two rows of seats, contributing to its excellent value. A third row seat package will also be available for families requiring additional seating capacity. Other key optional equipment will include an eight-way power driver's seat, manual rear air conditioning, and an AM/FM/six-disc CD Changer with satellite radio capability, MP3/WMA capability and six speakers.

With the new four-cylinder engine, Highlander will be the only mid-size SUV in the current market to offer three powerplant choices. The 3.5-liter Highlander V6, available in two- and full-time four-wheel drive, is among the leaders in fuel efficiency among V6 gas engines in its segment. The full-time 4WD-i Highlander Hybrid, equipped with a V6 powerplant with front and rear electric motors, stands above all others for fuel efficiency among all mid-size SUVs.

Since it first launched in 2001, Highlander has been one of Toyota's most popular vehicles, setting the standard for car-based SUVs in innovation, comfort and sales. Driver and passenger comfort is accomplished with segment leading seating versatility through innovative flexible seating functions for up to seven people. Comfort is complemented with one of the highest levels of standard safety features in the small- and mid-size SUV market including a segment-leading total of seven airbags.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - A top Honda Motor Co. executive said Wednesday the company's new gas-electric hybrid will be priced lower than the Toyota Prius, its prime competitor.

The new five-door car will only be available with a hybrid powertrain. It will be smaller than Honda's Civic and also will be priced less than a hybrid gas-electric version of the Civic, said Richard Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co.

Speaking to reporters at an industry seminar in Traverse City, Colliver said the new hybrid will be launched in April 2009.

"We're targeting sales of 100,000 units of this new vehicle in North America," he said in a speech at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars.

The Civic hybrid starts at $22,600, while the Prius has a base price of $21,500.

Colliver said Honda wants to make the hybrid affordable to a new generation of buyers, but it is not specifically trying to match Prius sales. Toyota sold more than 181,000 Priuses last year, and so far this year it has sold more than 106,000.

Honda has not released fuel economy figures for its new hybrid. The Prius gets an estimated 45 miles per gallon on the highway and 48 in the city.

Honda, which already has the most fuel-efficient lineup in the U.S., announced in May that it will sell the new hybrid-only Prius competitor in the U.S., Japan and Europe starting in early 2009. It also announced that it will build a new hybrid version of its Fit subcompact, but hasn't said if it will be sold in North America.

TRAVERSE CITY -- Ford Motor Co. expects to run assembly plants in Louisville, Ky., and Wayne on three shifts, making up to 300,000 vehicles a year at each, after converting them in 2010 to make small cars and crossovers instead of big pickups and SUVs, said Joe Hinrichs, Ford's top manufacturing executive.

"That's the scale we need to get to" if Ford is to make small cars profitably in the United States, Hinrichs said in an interview Wednesday.

That kind of volume -- at plants operating on only one shift today -- suggests that Ford could be adding thousands of production workers if the small-car designs it's bringing from Europe sell briskly in the United States.

That's a big if, of course, which puts tremendous pressure on Ford designers and marketing chief Jim Farley to deliver big sales increases, reversing a decade of slumping sales and market share for the Dearborn automaker.

Hinrichs, 41, Ford's group vice president for global manufacturing and labor affairs, was in Traverse City to receive the Shien-Ming Wu award for manufacturing excellence at the Management Briefing Seminars automotive conference.

Mark Fields, 47, Ford's president for the Americas, said in a speech Tuesday that Ford has created a 40-person team to create more hands-free electronic features in its cars. The Sync system, which integrates cell phone service with in-car music and GPS navigation, has helped boost Ford Focus transaction prices by $750 per car, Fields said.

Thanks to the spike in gas prices earlier this year, Hinrichs said, Ford could sell 300,000 Focus models in the United States this year if it had capacity to build them. But only 138,649 were sold in the first seven months, indicating that total output of the Focus -- Ford's only U.S. small-car offering -- will be limited to about 240,000 this year.

Ford's recently announced plans to bring in a slew of new small-car models from Europe -- including the Fiesta-- suggest that Ford could soon be making nearly 1 million cars annually in North America that are Focus-size or smaller.

Which begs the question: How do you sell that many little cars when your business has been geared to selling F-150s, Explorers and other big trucks and SUVs for many years? Will mileage-conscious customers automatically flock to Ford showrooms to check out the new fuel-efficient cars and crossovers?

Moody's Investors Service, which downgraded General Motors Corp.'s debt rating Wednesday, expressed skepticism about the Detroit Three's ability to quickly boost car sales after relying on trucks for so long.

"The most difficult challenge facing GM and the other domestic producers will be accelerating the introduction of fuel-efficient vehicles, and convincing consumers that these vehicles offer as good a value proposition as Asian products," wrote Bruce Clark, senior vice president of Moody's.

Fields said Ford can't simply bring popular small cars from Europe to the United States and assume that consumers will choose them over well-established models from Toyota, Honda and other Asian automakers.

"Good isn't good enough," he said at a dinner with journalists Tuesday night. "We realize we have to surprise people with Ford designs."

Ford hasn't had much success lately in snatching sales away from other brands. Its share of total U.S. vehicle sales has skidded from 25% in the late 1990s to 15.3% so far this year. Ford's U.S. sales have fallen 14% in the first seven months of 2008, compared with last year; the overall market is down 10.5%.

Ford executives have said that U.S. customers moved rapidly to more fuel-efficient cars, and away from SUVs and trucks, when gas prices zoomed past $3.50 a gallon in the spring.

Now that gas prices have fallen back from their high of $4.25 to around $3.80, Fields said the lower prices may help boost consumer confidence and help revive overall car and truck sales. But he said he does not expect that buyers will suddenly turn their backs on fuel efficiency and revert to buying big gas hogs again.

In light of Ford's huge commitment to retooling for small cars, Fields had better hope he's right about that.

The new vehicles will have the company's new, more fuel-efficient V-6 Phoenix engine and a more advanced suspension. They also will feature many common components designed jointly with Mercedes-Benz. Chrysler is still partly owned by Mercedes parent, Daimler AG.

The project includes a 285,000-square-foot expansion of the 2.7-million-square-foot plant, which was built in 1991, including a new body shop. The retooled factory will feature several environmental advances, from state-of-the-art lighting and energy management to using solid waste and paint sludge as a source of energy. It will be flexible enough to build different vehicles to better meet changing consumer demand.

"It allows us to do different products, including much smaller products as well as bigger," LaSorda said. Chrysler, like its Detroit rivals Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., is scrambling to add smaller vehicles to its lineup, which has been dominated by trucks, as high gas prices drive demand for more fuel-efficient cars and car-based SUVs, known as crossovers.

Gerald Meyers, a former chairman of American Motors Corp. and business professor at the University of Michigan, said the decision to build a new generation to replace the Grand Cherokee was overdue, but not without risks. "It's a very expensive bet to produce a new line of larger fuel-efficient vehicles, rather than smaller fuel-efficient vehicles," he said, noting the high costs of retooling.

Chrysler agreed to build the next-generation Grand Cherokee at the plant last fall in labor talks with the United Auto Workers.

"We are pleased to partner with Chrysler to help maintain jobs in Michigan," said General Holiefield, UAW vice president and director of the union's Chrysler department.

News of the investment in Detroit and the new products was the latest indication of where Chrysler is going with plans to revamp its lineup. LaSorda said the automaker continues to pursue alliances and partnerships with other companies, and hopes to secure deals in Russia, India and China this year.

"For Chrysler to become more global and offer a broader product mix, they are going to have to go the alliance route," said Erich Merkle, an automotive consultant with Crowe Chizek & Co. "Otherwise it is going to take far too much time to develop that expertise internally."

David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, said Chrysler doesn't have the size to produce vehicles worldwide and pay for all of the costs.

Unlike Ford and GM, which are bringing their European vehicles to the United States, Chrysler must look to partners for smaller vehicles.

Chrysler already has announced plans to work with Nissan Motor Co., the Japanese company providing it with two small cars, including a version of its Versa to be sold in South America and another small car to be built by Nissan in Japan and sold by Chrysler worldwide. Chrysler is providing Nissan with a pickup.

Chrysler plans to start selling the Chrysler-designed, Nissan-built small car in late 2010. "We've pretty much finalized the design of the product," LaSorda said. A name has been chosen for the vehicle but he declined to share it.

He said Chrysler and Nissan have no plans to expand their partnership, denying a report that they would collaborate on a midsize car. "We said we'd keep open dialogue but I think we're busy right now."

He also confirmed that Fiat had approached Chrysler about using Chrysler's excess factory capacity. "At this stage there is no formal discussion going on, but there was an inquiry."

A plan to sell small cars built by China's Chery Automobile Co. in Central and South America was delayed "because it did not meet our standards," LaSorda said. It may be ready by year's end, "but we're not going to put any nameplate on it until we can be assured it meets all of our standards."

Chrysler, like GM and Ford, has been battered by plummeting U.S. sales amid a weak economy and the market shift away from the trucks they have long relied on for profits. But LaSorda dismissed speculation that Chrysler owner, Cerberus Capital Management LP, might try to sell it because of the financial pressure.

"We'll be there and we're going to be there long term," he said. "We're going to rebound. It's just a question of time. Bottom line is they are holding on for the long term and we'll see what happens."

Chrysler, like its crosstown rivals, also is struggling because of the tight credit market, though it says it is meeting its financial targets. Still, LaSorda would welcome help in the way of federal government loan guarantees.

Congress could add those guarantees to a new stimulus package in September, something that could make retooling Jefferson North more affordable.

"It's not free," LaSorda said. "You have to pay it all back. ... We're hoping they do it."
