Video: Bob Lutz on the Volt Test Mule

By Bob Lutz, GM Vice Chairman

This week we announced that the GM Board has approved the Chevrolet Volt program. Yes, development work has been going on in earnest, but now it’s official. In fact, recently, at GM’s Milford Proving Ground, I drove an official “engineering development vehicle” with the 16-kwh lithium-ion battery pack we’ve been testing for our E-Flex System and I have to say – pun half-intended – it was electrifying.

Porsche Celebrates 60th Anniversary

Porsche_356.jpgATLANTA -- On June the 8th of 1948 the very first car to carry the Porsche name made its worldwide debut as it rolled out of its tiny workshop in the Austrian Alps.

The creation of Ferdinand Alexander “Ferry” Porsche, the son of Volkswagen Beetle designer Ferdinand Porsche and identified as 356-001, this diminutive and radical-for-the-time vehicle featured a unique teardrop aerodynamic body shape and placed the engine behind the driver.

Video: 78 miles an hour in a bass boat

When we traveled to the 2008 Bassmaster Classic to get a look at Toyota's Bass fishing sponsorship activities, we got the chance to go on a bass boat to watch the fisherman close up.

Even though it was late February it was pretty warm out, and thought people were making fun of the city boy when they told us to wear extra jackets and were even offered a full face motorcycle helmet to wear. Why would we need all that stuff, just to look silly?

The answer came in part to another question -- we were also wondering why these bass boats had such big engines. Our first, incorrect, assumption, was that it was a boys and their toys thing.

The answer, though, is that competitive bass fishing often occurs on large bodies of water, and given time constraints, the fishermen have to be able to get from one spot to another in a hurry. Like 78 miles an hour kind of a hurry.

So it turns out that those big engines do go real fast, and at top speed in an open boat, it also gets real cold in a hurry. And the wind coming at your face at that speed could be painful -- if we weren't wearing that full face helmet.

There was a little bit of funnin' at my expense when our guide opened the throttle, but we were like Ricky Bobby, screaming [inside the mask], "I wanna go fast!"

After the jump: Links to stories from the Bassmaster Classic.

The study, now in its second year, takes an in-depth look at the Internet usage and behavior of new-vehicle buyers to identify Web sites that most effectively target desirable advertising audiences in terms of reach and scope, and is the only study of its kind that consists exclusively of verified new-vehicle buyers.

Video: Hybridfest

Each year enthusiasts of hybrids and other “green” vehicles gather to swap information and view the latest technology at Hybridfest. Billed as “A Hybrid Electric Car Show and More,” the event promotes awareness and understanding of hybrid electric automobiles and increased transportation efficiency.

Important issues such as climate change, air quality, and the need for sustainable transportation are addressed by car manufacturers, environmental groups and various vendors. The two-mode hybrid is considered the next step in hybrid evolution, because it has two electric motors. A two-mode Chevrolet Hybrid will be rolling out later this year.

Myths or not, vehicles that have traditional gas engines and electric motors are a growing trend. Although they currently account for only two percent of new cars sold today, that number is expected to quadruple in the next five years. As their popularity increases, nearly every car manufacturer is rolling out new vehicles.

General Motors, Toyota and Ford are already testing plug-in hybrids which allow you to charge your vehicles battery at home, so it can run on its electric charge longer and use even less gas.

Video: Drive Less, Pay Less [Insurance]

The average vehicle in the U.S. is driven between 15,000 and 20,000 miles a year. Most insurance companies use that average to set their rates.

This means a driver who only puts 10,000 miles a year on their vehicle actually ends up paying more per mile for insurance than someone driving twice as much. But a new partnership will offer a low mileage discount using the in-vehicle communication technology offered by OnStar.

Video: Chrysler Opposes Electrocuting Dogs to Sell Cars

The Following Statement Can Be Attributed to Jason Vines, Vice President Communications, for the Chrysler Group:

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- "Chrysler Group was dismayed to discover today that an advertisement created by an ad agency supporting our Netherlands Market Performance Center goes far beyond the bounds of what the company considers appropriate. The advertisement for the new Dodge Nitro, recently introduced into the market, which includes fictional yet inappropriate treatment of an animal, is in extremely bad taste.

Although European commercials -- especially "viral" ads like this one -- are often edgier, this one went over the edge. Chrysler Group is investigating the origins of this commercial.

We have requested the viral ad be pulled from YouTube.com."

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

New Smart Park System Underscores Toyota's Relentless Push to Be No.1

In its relentless effort to meet the wants and needs of American consumers, Toyota has developed a new Lexus LS 460 Sedan which allows the car to park itself, with the driver playing a mere supporting role.

The LS 460, equipped with an industry-first eight-speed automatic transmission, a state-of-the-art aluminum V-8 engine that cranks out 380 horsepower, and an expected 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway, "represents... most of the reasons why Toyota is widely expected to become the world's No. 1 automaker sometime within the next two years," according to The Wall Street Journal.

Toyota, on its "technical tour de force," expects to sell 400,000 Lexus cars worldwide this year, and aims to close in on 500,000 next year. To view a demo of how the LS 460 can park itself, click here.

Video: GM's turn by turn navigation system

No More Stopping for Directions

GM To More Than Double In-Vehicle Navigation Systems in 2007

Who wants to stop for directions in the middle of a road trip? Now you won't have to. General Motors announced that nearly 2 million vehicles in the U.S. and Canada will be equipped with the new OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation system, making it easier than ever to navigate your next road trip. First introduced in May of this year, the service will be standard for the first year on a number of GM vehicles including nearly all Buicks and Cadillacs.

The simplicity of this navigation system allows drivers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers' vehicles through their system. Audio directions are then automatically planed through the vehicle's stereo as they are needed, triggered by the system's GPS capabilities.

Video: Chrysler steps up to show the ugly truth about drunk driving

With an estimated 30 percent of all teen traffic fatalities related to alcohol, underage drinking and driving remains a top concern throughout the world.

To help raise awareness of this issue, officials from the Chrysler Group and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) have created a photo exhibit – After the Crash – that educates parents and teenagers about the dangers of mixing alcohol with driving.

The pictorial display, which features the work of Pulitzer and Fulbright finalist Jeffrey Lamont Brown, depicts the lives of 10 families affected by underage drinking and driving. Starting on Sept.1, the exhibit will travel to 10 cities throughout the U.S., starting in Troy, MI.

Video: When your teen starts to drive

It's the day many parents anticipate with nervous energy - the day their teen gets behind the wheel on their own for the first time.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the crash rate per mile driven by 16 to 19 year olds is four times that of older drivers. As a result, every year more than 5,000 teen deaths occur from car crashes.

There are steps parents can take to make their teen a safer driver. A car is not a toy and it's important to reinforce that a vehicle is for transportation, not for social enjoyment. Also, teens should know the dangers of becoming distracted by cell phones, stereos, and passengers.

While your auto insurance rates go up when you add your teen to your policy, there are things that will help keep the costs down. Many insurance companies offer "good student discounts" if the teen driver maintains a certain grade point average and there may be discounts for completing safety programs.

Video: Pontiac drives to get the excitement back

richervid.jpgMark-Hans Richer makes no bones about the size or complexity of the problem he faces as Pontiac's marketing director. His brand, he admits, has lost its mojo and needs to find a new identity and emotional connection with car-buying consumers.

"Pontiac's singular challenge is to reestablish our social credibility," he says in this video interview. "Consumers need to feel proud of it and talk about it at barbecues and be OK with having a Pontiac in their driveway and not have people ask 'Why'd you buy that?'"

The 39-year-old became Pontiac's top marketing officer in 2004 and was the carmaker's advertising director before that. He's been responsible for a series of colorful, high-profile brand promotions including the G6 giveaways on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," the design project for Pontiac's new Solstice roadster brochures on "The Apprentice," the Torrent giveaways on "Survivor Guatemala" and the giant "Pontiac Garage" billboard and music stage in Times Square.

Mr. Richer joined GM nine years ago and, prior to his move to Pontiac, was advertising director at GMC, where he came up with the "Professional Grade" brand positioning that helped change the fortune of that brand. Prior to that, he worked on the McDonald's, SC Johnson Wax and General Mills' Big G cereals accounts at DDB Needham in Chicago.

Video: Buying Certified Used Cars

Americans will buy nearly 17 million new cars and trucks this year. The question of whether to buy new or used will most certainly be pondered by many of us. But if you haven't been to a dealership in a few years, you might be surprised to learn there's another option.

A cottage industry within used cars has been created for the last couple of years, and we call it "certified cars," "certified pre-owned," or "certified used cars." What this offers in addition to the vehicle itself is peace of mind with the transaction.

To "certify" a used vehicle, a dealer must perform a comprehensive multi-point inspection, laid out by the original manufacturer. In addition, the vehicle must meet age and mileage requirements. If the vehicle meets all the required criteria, the dealer will then "certify" the vehicle and its warranty will be extended.

And because they've set high quality criteria for certification, many manufacturers offer new car-like financing along with the warranty, making a "certified used" vehicle even harder to pass up.

Saving money on auto insurance

If you suffer from sticker shock every time you open up your auto insurance bill, then it's time to consider ways that may help reduce the cost.

Quite simply, being a good driver is one way to pay less for insurance. Insurance companies generally look at the past three years of your driving history. A minor traffic infraction can potentially impact your rates.

The type of car you drive also plays a role. If you're shopping for a new car, call your insurance agent and get an estimate of what your premium might be. If the car has a low risk of theft and has the latest safety gear, you may get a break.

Other ways to save: most companies offer multi-policy discounts if you have the same company carry more than one of your insurance policies; students may be eligible for "good student" discounts; and you can raise the deductible, which is your out-of-pocket expense on a claim.

Get a Free Vehicle Price Quote, Courtesy of Car Buyer's Notebook

The Internet has has clearly shifted the car buying equation in favor of the consumer.

Not only can you research any and all vehicles you may be interested in from the no-pressure environment of your computer, you can also get a free, no-obligation price quote onthe vehicle[s] of your choice, simply by using this form, which takes less than 2 minutes to complete.

Here's the way it works: by clicking on the icon above right, then filling out the form with your vehicle interest and contact info, the details are sent to new car dealers in your area. Nowadays, all car dealers have "Internet departments" whose job it is to respond to these "leads" and earn your business.

Long gone are the days where you wander into a dealership, just to look, and drive away an hour or so later with a vehicle you never knew you just had to have!

We strongly recommed new vehicle buyers utilize all the tools at their disposal, and we are proud to be working with the biggest and most trusted provider of vehicle price quotes in the industry. If you have any questions about how this tool works -- or even any hesitation -- please feel free to contact us via e-mail.

We feel so strongly about both the tool and the service, that for the first time we're publishing our direct telephone number: 703-236-1846. If we can help you in any way, feel free to call [during reasonable hours, of course!]

Video: Brilliantly British, Funny, Interesting Review of the [Diesel] Audi A8

Audi_A8_Video_Review.jpg

This link was sent to us by Rich, and we are all grateful! In this 12:41 video, Jeremy Clarkson, a British car reviewer for the show Top Gear, takes the diesel Audi A8 on an 800 mile roundtrip from London to Edinburgh -- simply to see if he can squeeze 800 miles out of a 19.8 gallon tank.

The video is funny, because Jeremy is stunning in his exuberant, droll way. At one point, when the fuel gauge in on empty, he remarks, "What is this thing running on? ... I wonder if Audi know that they have inadvertently built the world's first airpowered engine?"

That's all we're writing -- watch the video!

Video: Shockingly Bad Toyota Spec Ad, Fun Honda Civic Spot

Two_ads_Scrnsht.jpgWhat was he thinking? Theodore Melfi, a video director who must think he's an artiste, put together a spec Toyota Prius ad that shows a guy trying to commit suicide by sitting in a running vehicle with a hose from the exhaust.

But the guys gets disgusted, see, because the Prius has such low emissions it won't kill him. Get it?

So he gets out of the car, grabs a rope from the trunk and walks off screen.

Ad Age, where you can see the spot, has a note saying that a pr firm is circulating the video as a means to showcase Melfi's work. I predict he is the one who's going to try and kill himself because he just committed career suicide.

On a lighter note, the same page also has a link to a Honda Civic Hybrid commercial that evokes a flower power generation vibe. It's enjoyable, and you'll need the breath of fresh air after watching the Toyota spot.

Driving the Prius was a lot of fun -- it seems the jazz quotient is higher when you're driving one of the hottest "It" cars of the moment.

Yes, it is the best selling hybrid in America. Indeed, it really can be considered the vehicle that put hybrids on the map in many ways, when rising gas prices, interest in the car and overwhelming consumer demand all contributed to making the Prius a star in the media firmament.

But once you get over the hybrid faloozzle, you learn something else about the Prius -- it's a fun, sporty compact! This video goes over some of the basic data about the Prius, along with a special surprise.
