2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download

fuel_econ_guide_08.jpgThe EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.

In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.

To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Suzuki offers free gas incentives through June

Suzuki_freegas.jpgThrough June 30, 2008, you can get "free" gas for the summer when you buy a new Suzuki. The gas spiff comes in the form of a prepaid Visa card, that is charged with up to $470 -- which represents the amount of money you would spend on gas for the specific vehicle, for three months of average driving.

For example, if you buy a Suzuki SX4, you will get a Visa card for $355. The value is calculated by assuming an average 1,000 miles per month, with the SX4 getting 28 miles to the gallon and a gas price assumption of $3.29 per gallon.

To figure the gas card value, divide 3,000 miles [3 months] by 28 MPG, which equals 107.14 gallons. Multiply that by $3.26 per gallon, and you get $352.50. Suzuki then round that up to $355.

Here are the gas card spiff for each Suzuki vehicle, which, are offered in lieu of traditional rebates:

Suzuki, Ford Turn to "Conquest" Rebates in Soft Market

Suzuki_XL7_08.jpgWith new vehicle sales slumping and no good economic news in site, at least two automakers are turning to "conquest" rebates to convince consumers to get into one of their vehicles.

In the auto industry, the term "conquest" refers to a purchase by a consumer who elects to switch the brand of vehicle they choose to buy. It is considered an indicator of the brand's future fortunes and the strength of their current lineup. In general, consumers switch to new brands when a particular vehicle captures the public's imagination, or if the brand is enjoying a growing reputation for quality and value.

From what we've seen so far, Ford and Suzuki are currently offering conquest rebates to customers -- and both of them are for SUVs. Both programs require the customer to currently own a competitive product, meaning an SUV or minivan.

Suzuki is offering $1,000 to a customer who trades in an SUV or minivan to buy the Suzuki XL7, and the customer is required to trade that vehicle into the dealer. The Suzuki program ends April 30, 2008; more info can be found in this PDF.

Ford is also offering $1,000 to customers who buy an Edge SUV, and who own a competitive vehicle, but the program does not require the existing vehicle to be traded in. Ford program ends March 31, 2008.

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow

It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.

Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?

In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:

1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.

2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.

3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.

4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.

5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.

6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.

This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!

Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.

The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:

-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!

-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.

-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.

-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]

-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.

Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

One ecstatic Subaru Outback owner shares his experience

07_Outback_2.5i.jpg

Editor's note: John Carver, an extremely satsified Subaru customer and Car Buyer's Notebook reader, forwarded us this letter he sent to the carmaker's headquarters, wherein he describes his appreciation for his new Sube. We're sharing it because, well, read for yourself:

Gentlemen and women,

We purchased a 2006 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited eight months ago and are very happy to make this report. Outstanding is the best description I have. My wife and I get excited about it every time it is driven.

Just recently we were out of town at a restaurant overlooking the Mississippi river in the beautiful little village of Lansing, Iowa. And on our exit we noticed an older couple engrossed by the Outback. As we approached they asked if we were the owners and of course we proudly said yes. They were both taken aback by its color (champagne gold opal) and the styling both inside and out.

It was also stated the interior was superior to the American luxury car they were driving. I told the gentleman about the boxer engine, the AWD, great gas mileage, and no doubt more than he wanted to hear. However, he said he was going to rent one for a trip now and if he liked it would probably buy one.

We had a prior exchange with an attorney and a professional hair dresser who had just seen the car for the first time that same day. They both were quite exclamatory about the car's attributes and that the Subaru had really caught their eyes. We have had other numerous admiring glances at home and elsewhere on the road. It makes us feel we really have something special.

Driving the car is always a thrill. We feel extremely safe in its enclosure as well as comfortable. My wife, who thought we didn't need the leather, heated seats, moon roof, dual zone heating and cooling, and so forth, is very glad we made those purchases. She loves the heated seats and feels it is like a massage underway. I found that my arthritic knee and associated muscle pulls are relaxed with the seat.

Suzuki increases ad budget to hit sales record

suzukiad.jpgAmerican Suzuki Motor Corp. is about to reach a milestone. For the first time since arriving on these shores in 1985, the automaker expects to sell 100,000 vehicles this year.

While still far behind the giants -- Toyota's Camry alone, for example, sells four times that annually in the U.S. -- it's nonetheless a respectable showing for Suzuki, achieved through hard work (increasing its ad budget and winning over higher-end buyers) and luck (its small Grand Vitara hit last fall just as buyers were shunning big SUVs because of gas prices).

Suzuki driver, "Monster" Tajima sets new record at Pike's Peak

MonsterTajima.jpg

MonsterTajimamug.jpg

Colorado Springs, Colo., (July 6, 2006) - Nubihiro “Monster” Tajima, driving his modified Suzuki Grand Vitara Hill Climb Special, posted an overall win in the 84th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb near Colorado Springs, Colo.

From the time the tube-frame, carbon fiber clad Grand Vitara rolled off the trailer for testing, the 1,000-horsepower racecar performed very well. Tajima set the best top time on practice days on the top section and bottom sections of the mountain.

Race day (Saturday, July 1) started out with good weather but after the motorcycle division ran up the hill, the clouds came out, grew black in color and both spectators and racers wondered what would happen. At the start line the weather was fine, but reports came down that snow, then hail was falling on the top section.

The race was red-flagged several times due to the dangerous course conditions. Finally, race officials decided to shorten the race, from the starting line to only the 16-mile marker at the Devil’s Playground, cutting three miles off the top of the course.

Roadside Assistance Programs on Foreign Cars

It’s the kind of feature that comes equipped with most new International vehicles that owners never want to use – and ironically, one the vast majority of consumers don’t even know comes standard with their purchase.

Just like an umbrella, roadside assistance is something you don’t need until the situation calls for it – and then you find you really need it. And life can be pretty miserable without it.

Luckily, many International nameplate brands provide some level of free roadside assistance during the initial warranty period of the vehicle, with some offering it as an upgrade to the basic plan.

Once the exclusive province of fee-for-membership clubs such as AAA, roadside assistance programs usually provide services such as free towing in case of a breakdown, flat tire changing and even a few gallons of gas in case you tried to push the needle past empty a little too far.

The specifics of each automakers programs differ; current owners should check their owner’s manual for details, prospective buyers can find information at the respective brands’ websites.

What follows is a thumbnail description of roadside assistance programs from several international nameplate manufacturers.

Current Incentives on Foreign Cars, Trucks and SUVs

Depending on a number of variables -- including time of year, prime rate and available inventory, all automakers provide a mix of cash rebates and financing programs to the consumer through their dealers. And while in many cases big signs announcing cash off are enticing, the reality is that low financing can actually make a new vehicle purchase more affordable in the long run than that splashy number.

Right now, international nameplate dealers are offering a variety of programs, sometimes cash, sometimes finance, and sometimes a mix of both, to consumers interested in getting into one of their vehicles. The following list is a summary of nationally available programs, though offers do vary from region to region, with financing deals especially dependent on the consumer’s credit history. As always, your best option is to visit your local International nameplate dealership to find out what they’re offering on the vehicle you’re most interested in.

Clips MUST be between 30 and 45 seconds long, and in the case of video, should show the salesperson either in front of or sitting inside the vehicle.

In order to enter, clips must be e-mailed to us at editor@carbuyersnotebook.com, and they MUST come from a recognizable dealership address and also include the dealer's phone number.

That's it. We're specifically are excluding dealer principals and/or managers. We want to hear from the sales people. Our goal is to give our audience a different, fun kind of content, to get the retail side of the industry involved and also, to show new vehicle salespeople in a light they don't often get to present themselves in. We're excited about this!

First Look: 2006 Suzuki Aerio SX

Suzuki_Aerio_SX.jpg

This is the second time we've driven an Aerio and our affection for it grows. For $16,999, you get a sporty subcompact wagon with all-wheel drive, cruise control, remote keyless entry, air conditioning, anti-lock brakes, AND a 155-horsepower four-cylinder engine.

The car is fun to drive -- this time we've got an automatic, last time it was a manual. And while we prefer manual transmissions, the automatic still gets a lot out of the peppy engine.

If you're looking at this segment, including the new cars such as the Toyota Yaris and Nissan Versa coming to town, we suggest driving the Aerio. After you fit those cars out with similar equipment, you're looking at equivalent price, and again, the 155-hp engine, to us, is the right sized plant for a vehicle this size.

The Aerio feels roomy inside, the steering and drive are responsive -- even we were surprised when we shot past a lumberinng bus in the nick of time during an unexpected lane choke that put us in a tough spot. Particularly nice are the steering wheel mounted controls, including cruise, that we know now how to operate by feel, because it's a good design.

If you want to get a free, no-obligation price quote on a 2006 Suzuki Aerio, click here.

First Look: 2006 Suzuki XL-7

Suzuki_XL7.jpg

We've got the 2006 XL-7 SUV this week and our first impression is that it is another great value offering from Suzuki. The vehicle provides al the functionality of a mid-size SUV without the knockout sticker price.

Driving it around town is comfortable, with appropriate pickup off the starting line and smooth, car-like maneuverability. Our model is the one notch under the top of the line with seven passenger seating and four-wheel drive, and the sticker price is only $24,889.

For 2006 Suzuki simplified the XL-7 line, offering one trim version but with several option levels. The base 2WD model starts at only $21,999, and includes remote keyless entry; cruise control; air conditioning with automatic climate control; 16-inch alloy wheels; power windows, door locks and mirrors; AM/FM/CD XM Satellite Radio-ready audio system with six-speakers; and five-passenger seating. The four-wheel drive goes for $23,199.

WIth seven passenger seating, there are three options, starting at $23,699 with rear air conditioning. As stated, our four-wheel drive is $24,899, and a top-of-the-line Premium Package starts at $25,499 and also comes with leather seating; a six-disc in-dash XM Satellite Radio-ready audio system with seven speakers including a subwoofer; a power sunroof; fog lights; and running boards.

The engine in the XL-7 is a 2.7-liter, six-cylinder, 24-valve, DOHC engine that generates 185 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, with a tow rating of 3,000 pounds. Transmission is a standard five-speed automative and the XL-7 gets an estimated 17/22 mpg city/highway [4WD] or 18/22 [2WD)].

It Pays to be Loyal to Suzuki, Kia

Loyalty_coupon.jpg

Loyalty programs are designed to keep current brand owners all in the family, and Suzuki offers up to $1,000 for current owners to buy another one of their vehicles.

The Suzuki offer stretches across the whole line, for both 2005 and 2006 model vehicles. You can get a $1,000 by buying their XL-& or Grand Vitara SUVs, or $500 for their Aerio, Verona, Forenza and Reno models.

The giving doesn't end there with Suzuki, if you're also a recent graduate and in the military, incentives climb as high as $3,750 for the SUVs and $3,000 for the cars, but only for the 2006 models. Total incentives for the oh-fives are a little less.

Kia has a similar loyalty program, for $2,000, but it's only good for '04 and '05 Amantis.

Test Driving the Suzuki Aerio SX -- More Fun than an Insomniac Could Ever Hope For!

Aerio.jpg
Concept for a great TV commercial -- camera follows a grumpy insomniac from his apartment at 3 a.m to the parking lot. Sight of the Suzuki Aerio SX brightens him up a little ... then he gets in the car, starts the engine and drives off ... suddenly he's back on screen, wide awake and grinning as he guns the engine, throws it into gear and takes off up the ramp and onto the highway ...

Of course I think it's a great idea, it happened to me! Not able to sleep one night, I got up and decided to go get something from an all-night gas station -- taking advantage of the empty roads, I had a blast pushing through the Aerio's five-speeds, enjoying the right-there acceleration and tight handling.

Whatever you think about my directorial ambitions, if you're in the market for a incredibly affordable, fun car, you need to think about getting your bad self to a Suzuki dealer to check out the Aerio SX.

This car surprised me from the first time I saw it. My co-pilot had rented one in Cape Cod, and kept going on about what a fun car it was. And spacious, and peppy and good looking, to the point I almost got jealous.

First off, the Aerio SX, which is Suzuki's sport crossover version of the base vehicle, is a sharp looker. Angular and with a somewhat offbeat style, it's perfect for those who see their car as a refuge of fun after a hard day's work.

Suzuki Reinvigorates SUV Line with Concept-X2

Suzuki_X2.jpg
Now here's a good sign -- when the speeches and the official debut of Suzuki's new SUV were done, a group of about 12 to 15 Suzuki dealers took command of the stage and launched into an enthusiastic team cheer.

Of course, auto dealers have to at least feign excitement for new vehicles that come from their suppliers, but this group wasn't faking it -- after the cheer they got busy taking pictures of each other in front of the car, inside it and with their arms around each other while grinning ear to ear.

All the while they were acting like they had won the lottery.

Cam Smith Arnold, Suzuki Motors Vice President, said while the company is excited about the new Concept-X2, the members of their dealer body are ecstatic.

Suzuki Aerio SX First Drive

Aerio_1.jpg

What a neat little car! I've had the 155-hp Suzuki Aerio SX for a day now, and am having a ball driving the 5-speed manual transmission around town.

This morning I woke up around 3:30 and took a spin out on deserted roads to a convenience store. Let me say the manual tranny is a must for someone who knows they want a smaller, economical car but is afraid they might be giving up something in the performance department.

Not with the five-speed.

I can attest that the direct control helps you wring every inch of performance from the 155-hp engine -- which by the way is bigger and beefier than comparable vehicles in its class. Stay tuned for more impressions from driving this sporty mobile.

"Kia" means "Formidable" in Korean

An in-depth look at 2004 year-end sales statistics yields a surprising achievement for Kia -- the Korean automaker is now the fifth best-selling import brand in the U.S.

To do this, Kia vaulted over BMW, Volkswagen, Mazda and Mitsubishi, jumping four places in one year, from a ninth place finish in 2003. While the economy car maker was aided by sales drops from VW and Mitsubishi, its 13.7% sales increase moved it past BMW and Mazda, which both posted sales increaes of their own.

While Toyota's sales strength has been well-documented, Nissan and Suzuki also had strong years. Nissan was up 24.1% for the year, and seems poised to sell one million vehicles in 2005.

Suzuki had a similar increase, 26.5%. While it may look as if Suzuki could overtake Audi for the 13th position, the German automaker has several new products for '05 that may help it regain its '04 slide of nearly 10%.

Crystal Ball Prediction: Toyota Tacoma will be the best-selling small pickup in 2005

Toyota_Tacoma_2005.jpg
Memo to Ford Ranger product managers: That Tacoma
in your side view mirror is closer than it appears.

On the way to selling nearly one million F-150 pickups in 2004, Ford simultaneously saw Ranger sales drop by over 25%. Many would argue they let the product go into freefall, by pushing the bigger truck with prices that would have made buying a Ranger kind of silly. Of course, there's also the little matter of not redesigning the vehicle for years.

Along comes Toyota with a newly redesigned 2005 Tacoma that won Motor Trend's truck of the year. The new Tacoma has more powerful engines than the Ranger, and comes in a dizzying 18 configurations at prices better than Ford's.

Looking at 2004 sales numbers, Toyota sold only 3,389 fewer Tacomas than Ford sold Rangers -- but only because Ford practically abandoned the product.

Going into '05, with the Tacoma outselling the Ranger by about 3,000 units every month for the least few months, I predict the Tacoma is going to be the best selling light pickup in America.

This is no small matter -- no foreign car maker has the lead in any light truck category -- often considered to be the last bastion of domestic dominance.
