Top Selling Crossovers in the United States for May 2008

With total SUV sales down 19.5% in May, not even the crossover segment was able to escape unscathed -- the smaller ute/station wagon category was also down 5%, as consumers decided they didn't even want mini-SUVs over more fuel efficient cars.

Besides the usual suspects a couple vehicles did well in consumers' quest for smaller wagons, including the Dodge Journey, Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester. Also of note is that GM placed both the GMC Acadia and Saturn Vue in the top 15, which is good news for that new platform, and for the parent company that suffered a big blow for the month.

After the jump, the top 15 best selling crossovers for May 2008:

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download

fuel_econ_guide_08.jpgThe EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.

In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.

To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow

It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.

Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?

In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:

1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.

2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.

3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.

4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.

5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.

6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.

This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!

Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.

The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:

-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!

-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.

-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.

-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]

-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.

Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

Subaru's new ad campaign emphasizes brand image

SUBARU HAS LAUNCHED A RAFT of new TV ads to promote the company's lineup of 2008 vehicles.

Although creatively and thematically different for each vehicle, the new print and TV ads are intended to further the company's efforts this year to promote the new lineup while driving home a Subaru identity around adventure, fun and all-wheel drive: Each of the ads ends with an overarching Subaru message that each vehicle is ready for something different.

The company's challenge in terms of brand-building may be a strength in marketing strategy, say analysts, who note that the company has adhered to a modus operandi of targeting defined niches. The company has historically pitched cars like the WRX Impreza to younger consumers, who are fans of compact import cars that can be modified and personalized. Meanwhile, the company pitches wagons like Forrester and Outback (for which the company has in the past signed spokespeople like Paul Hogan and Lance Armstrong), to people about as likely to attend a Hot Import Nights show as a 20-something car tuner is to learn bird calls.

The effort--via DDB New York, Subaru's AOR since 2004--ties the brand together with a fun, freedom, adventure, confidence and control ethos. Ads, some of which started in June, focus on the 2008 versions of the Tribeca crossover SUV, the Impreza four- and five-door, the Outback sport-utility wagon and the Legacy sport sedan.

The newest of the ads, launching this week, for Impreza, take the unusual tack of referencing the print ads from the same campaign. They use the tag-line: "It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru." They all tout Subaru's all-wheel drive.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Report: most cars still can't prevent whiplash

Rear crash protection in cars: seat/head restraints in two of every three models are marginal or poor

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback.

ARLINGTON, VA — Seat/head restraint designs in 22 current car models are rated good for rear crash protection, but those in 53 other cars are rated marginal or poor. The latest evaluations of occupant protection in rear-end collisions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the seat/head restraints in more than 60 percent of car models fall short of current state-of-the-art protection from neck injury or whiplash.

The ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in a typical rear-end collision.

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback. Seat/head restraints in 12 other car models are rated acceptable. These results show some improvement since the Institute began rear impact tests of seat/head restraints in 2004. Seats in only 8 car models earned good ratings in 2004.

nrc1.jpg

nrc2.jpgTeam Subaru Driver Caps 'Golden Year'

Subaru Rally USA driver Travis Pastrana has won the 2006 Rally America National Championship, the youngest driver ever to do so. Pastrana, who turned 23 years old in October, took a Gold medal in rally at the X Games earlier this year and now takes his first driver's championship in just his second year of rally competition.

Pastrana held a strong lead in the championship hunt coming into the penultimate round in the Lake Superior Performance Rally held Oct. 20-21, and needed only a 6th place or better to grab the championship. However, when 2nd place in the championship standings crashed out of the rally on the second stage, Pastrana clinched the championship with a 50-point lead in the standings - and there is still one more race to go, the Wild West Rally in Olympia, Wash., Dec. 1-3. Pastrana, with his co-driver Christian Edstrom, had been the front-runner for much of the Lake Superior Performance Rally, but victory in the race went to Subaru Rally Team USA driver Ken Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino.

Subaru may sell rebadged small Toyotas in Europe

Toyota may supply Subaru with small cars for the Subaru-brand car maker to sell in Europe, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Yomiuri said Toyota, which is Fuji Heavy's largest shareholder, is looking at providing cars based on its Yaris model and on another model sold only in Europe under an original equipment manufacturing deal from as early as 2008.

The move would help Fuji Heavy, which lacks a strong small car model in a market where cars must meet new tighter emission standards. It would also help Toyota cut costs by boosting volume sales.

Subaru is developing its own 2 liter diesel engine, that will not be in vehicles until 2008.

Rather than buying a diesel from someone else, Subaru is developing its own, and reportedly has working examples of a four-cylinder plant. This engine will first appear in the Subaru Legacy in 2008.

However, the new diesel is unlikely to appear in Subaru's all-new premium 4x4, the Tribeca. The manufacturer is looking at a six cylinder 3 liter diesel for the Tribeca.

Ten Fuel-Efficient SUVs

Current car shoppers concerned with gas prices but requiring larger vehicles can pick from Autobytel's Top-10 Most Fuel-Efficient SUVs for 2006, which are described as "bird-like" SUVs that sip fuel "like a bird" rather than guzzle gas:

The Top-10 Fuel-Efficient SUVs for 2006:

1. Toyota RAV-4 - The new, bigger, more stylish 2006 model makes the already-impressive original look like a shop-class experiment. It's similar in price to our 2nd-place finisher, the Honda CRV, but with 100 extra horsepower. The V6, amazingly, gets 25 mpg combined.

2. Honda CR-V - "Quirky" design aside, it's safe, roomy and reli-able, with 25 mpg for the 2WD automatic drivetrain. The bottom line: It delivers what people need in an SUV efficiently.

3. Honda Element - An even "quirkier" design, but, again, it gets the job done in terms of utility, drivability and fuel economy - 24 mpg in combined driving.

4. Subaru Outback - A good, safe ride - with Subaru's signature all-wheel drive - powered by a clean PZEV-rated 175-horsepower engine that generates a respectable 25 mpg.

5. Ford Escape Hybrid - Offers excellent fuel economy (33 mpg
combined) and good utility. Low power ratings belie surprisingly good acceleration. Cheap interior materials contributed to our middle-of-the-pack ranking.

6. Subaru Forester - Again, a characteristically solid Subaru
offering, but lacks the clean ULEV, SULEV, or PZEV ratings of many new cars. Other drawbacks include odd styling and an uncomfort-ably tight back seat. Forester gets 25 mpg combined for the base, Premium and L.L. Bean versions.

7. Lexus RX 400h - A super-charged hybrid? Can drivers really have it both ways? Not necessarily at the same time: dig deep into the 268-horsepower V6 and the promise of 30 mpg mileage vanishes - or go for the fuel economy and forsake the performance aspects of a $44,000 SUV.

8. Mercury Mariner Hybrid - Eerily similar to the Escape Hybrid, but costs significantly more to get the same fuel economy.

9. Toyota Highlander Hybrid - This vehicle's reported 30 mpg in mixed driving comes at a $30,000 price tag. This may prove to be a very optimistic fuel economy number when it comes to everyday SUV use.

10. Chevrolet HHR - EPA classifications aside, many may not consider this 5-passenger wagon to be an SUV, and many may want a better ride from their sport ute. Still, it gets 25 mpg for a price starting at $15,000.

Subaru Outback Gets Rave Endorsement from New Owner

06_Outback_2.5XT_WagonLtd.jpg

Editor's note: we got a very cool note from a CBN reader about his new Subaru Outback and thought we'd share it with the rest of you:

I purchased an Outback 2.5i Limited one month ago. Fuji Heavy Industries produces a fantastic automobile. I have driven an American brand soley for over 45 years and made this switch based upon both my reaction and my wife's. She was never excited about any other car I purchased but this one got her excited.

The quality of fit and finish and comfort and driveability and appearance and everything else enamored her (and me). The single colored champagne gold didn't hurt either.

It is no wonder the big three were all down in sales last month and most imports (even those made here which is a lot) were on the increase. Subaru is on the very same plane as Toyota, Honda, etc. Our town is full of them and I haven't found one person who doesn't love them.

One owner said if I don't get at least 150-200,000 miles he would be very surprised. The little four cylinder boxer engine with 16 valves and dual exhausts is amazing and gets great mileage.

Kia Sedona and Subaru Impreza Earn Top Safety Picks

Crash tests of small cars & minivans: 2 earn the Institute's Top Safety Pick award; 1st Institute test results for Prius hybrid

ARLINGTON, VA — The Kia Sedona and Subaru Impreza are the best performers in a group of minivans and small cars recently evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Sedona is the first minivan to earn the Institute's Top Safety Pick award, and the Impreza is only the second small car design to earn this award. Both vehicles earn gold awards for good crashworthiness ratings.

The Institute also evaluated the Toyota Prius hybrid's front, side, and rear crashworthiness plus the side crashworthiness of three other vehicle designs — the Mini Cooper (small car) and Dodge Grand Caravan and Chevrolet Uplander (minivans). Results for these vehicles update the results for minivan and small car models that were released last year. Side tests of the Grand Caravan, Uplander, Mini Cooper, and Impreza were delayed at the request of the vehicle manufacturers, who were making changes to improve crashworthiness.

Sedona is top-rated minivan: Among the eight current minivan designs the Institute has rated, the Sedona is the only one that earns good ratings in all three Institute tests (this vehicle also will be sold as the 2007 Hyundai Entourage later this spring). The new Sedona's frontal crash test performance is an improvement compared with the previous model, which the Institute rated acceptable.

Kia Sedona Rated "Best Minivan We've Tested"

Sedona.jpg

The folks at Kia are plenty happy today. Not only is their new Sedona minivan selling gangbusters, it is the first minivan to receive top safety ratings in front, side and rear crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety [IIHS].

Adrian Lund, IIHS president said the Sedona is the "best minivan we've tested," and singled out its rear crash test performance as praiseworthy. The Sedona is the only minivan with active head restraints and comes with standard side airbags, considered a must for side impact protection.

Subaru's Impreza also received a top safety pick from the Institute, for good performance in all three tests, while the Toyota Prius was singled out for poor rear crash protection.

The Subaru Revolution Takes Hold in Texas

SubaruPlano.jpg

Under the wide Texas skies, there’s no room for bluffing on auto rows. Especially in Dallas, where Subaru dealer David Thomas said, "On Lemmon Avenue, you’ve got everything from Hummer that’s the anchor at one end, Audi’s the anchor at the other end to everything in-between including Honda, Subaru, Volkswagen, Aston-Martin, there’s that huge new Mercedes dealership -- there’s been a $100 million worth of construction in the last two and a half years."

That perspective makes Subaru of Dallas’ success more impressive. When you have a geographical situation where someone test driving another brand’s car can pull into your lot -- in the competition’s vehicle -- to do a real-time comparison, the dealership’s 90% conquest rate illustrates how Subaru is successfully expanding outside of their traditional markets.

PlanoGroundbreaking.jpgIn an effort to build on their success in Dallas, Subaru of America has entered into their first "antenna" store project with Thomas, a joint operation where Subaru corporate is funding the land and construction, with Thomas operating as dealer principal. The project is being physically built on Subaru’s new Signature Facility Program template and is intended to provide a direct link for retail floor data between the dealership and corporate executives.

Besides the obvious benefit of funding, Thomas said the project holds other benefits for the dealership, in that new training concepts and product information can be tried out in the Plano location for testing purposes. For the corporate end, Plano will provide "ready access to market information," and an opportunity for corporate visits and training, said Peter Cook, Director of Market Development, Subaru of America.

But why is Subaru doing so well in Dallas? It’s no secret that the brand is associated with colder climes, as Cook said, "it’s considered the state bird of Vermont."

Subaru is All Wheel Dealing

allwheeldeal.jpg

Through March 31, Subaru is offering zero percent financing on all models, or $1,000 and up rebates, or sweet leasing options.

It's the early months of the year that the automakers need to sell vehicles in order to make their annual sales projections, so this may be one of the best times to go in and get the vehicle that had all-wheel drive before AWD was cool.
