Toyota Prius -- a brand unto itself
Consider Toyota's happy problem: much like the Xerox brand became synonymous with photocopying, the Prius now equals "hybrid" in consumers' minds.
The Prius is so successful as a stand alone vehicle that Toyota is having a hard time gaining traction for their preferred brand name, Hybrid Synergy Drive, which is how they market their Camry and Highlander hybrid models.
This happy problem may lead Toyota to create new vehicles under a Prius model line, such as a wagon or two door model, according to Jim Lentz, the company's president of U.S. operations. In an Automotive News interview, Lentz said Toyota may consider new Prius models after 2010, when the existing car is due for a redesign.
This means Prius might take off as a sub-brand the way Scion has, especially if gas prices stay high enough to cement Americans' move into smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. But the Scion brand was a deliberate business move to create a new product line, whereas the Prius has taken on a life of its own -- not a bad problem to have.

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download
The EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.
In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.
To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Top twenty best selling small cars for April 2008
Americans rediscovered cars in April 2008, with small cars in particular accounting for nearly one in five of all vehicles sold in an otherwise down month.
Toyota had four vehicles in the top twenty, General Motors had three; Nissan, Hyundai and Kia had two apiece. And Dodge has a hit with the Caliber, which made the list at number 9.
With people paying nearly $4 per gallon of gas nationwide, it appears that the free market has achieved what environmentalists have been clamoring about for years -- to conserve fuel by buying smaller vehicles.
The top twenty best selling small cars for April 2008:

Current Auto Rebates Has All the Updated Rebates!
With auto sales down 4.3% in January 2008, many automakers are increasing the rebate and incentive offers they have on the hoods of their vehicles.
Yet keeping track of all the rebate programs can be difficult work, which is why we began publishing Current Auto Rebates, the Internet's first document that lists every rebate program for every vehicle for same in the United States.
This 13-page PDF makes it easy for you to look up rebates on any model you're interested in, and even allows you to contact your local dealer who will give you a free price quote on the ride of your choice.
Since rebate programs can change several times per month, you may want to sign up for free updates to the publication -- when we update the document you'll get an email from us letting you know a refreshed version is available for you to download.
And if someone you know is currently shopping for a new vehicle, you may want to download a copy and email it to them -- they'll thank you for doing so!

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow
It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.
Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?
In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:
1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.
2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.
3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.
4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.
5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.
6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.
This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!
Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.
The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:
-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!
-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.
-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.
-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]
-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

Toyota Reliability Slips in Consumer Reports' Survey
93 percent of Ford, Lincoln, Mercury models in survey score average or better
YONKERS, N.Y. -- After years of sterling reliability, Toyota is showing cracks in its armor, according to data from Consumer Reports' 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey. By contrast, Ford's domestic brands have made considerable improvements. The announcement was made before the Detroit-based Automotive Press Association (APA) today at the Detroit Athletic Club.
The V6 version of the company's top-selling Camry, and the four-wheel-drive V8 version of the Tundra pickup, both redesigned for 2007, now rate below average in Consumer Reports' predicted reliability rating. In addition, the all-wheel-drive version of the Lexus GS sedan also received a below average rating. Because Consumer Reports does not recommend models with below-average reliability, these models no longer make CR's "Recommended" list.

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.
Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 10 Safe New Vehicles for Less Than $25,000 list has arrived today, just in time for the final weeks of summer.

Toyota Environmental Update - June 2007
IntelliChoice.com, an online source for analysis of automotive cost and value, included Prius in its "Best Overall Value of the Year" awards for model year 2007. "The Toyota Prius, one of four hybrids on the list, is the Best Car Value Under $23,000 for the second consecutive year," IntelliChoice said.
Consumer Reports measures customer satisfaction by asking, "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?" Based on the percentage of people who answer "definitely yes" to this question, vehicles are placed on the Most Satisfying list. ConsumerReports.org said: "The Toyota Prius ranks as the most satisfying vehicle overall for the fourth straight year, with 92 percent of owners saying they'd get another one."

Scion clicks with young buyers
When it comes to cars, teens and twentysomethings say they want three things: style, performance and affordability.
It's an equation that usually adds up to a foreign car purchase. Experts say the buying trend has taken off in recent years as foreign car companies have gone out of their way to lure younger customers.
Data from the Power Information Network show that those between the ages of 15 and 30 opt to purchase foreign vehicles more than domestic ones. Of the top 10 vehicles preferred by young adults in 2006, only two were traditional domestic brands: DaimlerChrysler's Jeep and General Motors' Pontiac.
Toyota's Scion brand claimed the No. 1 spot. Analysts say that's largely because Scion vehicles are affordable and are easy to modify.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!
Aren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?
I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.
Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]
In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.
Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:
1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.
2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.
And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Scion Launches All-New 2008 xB

Torrance, CA - Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., recently unveiled the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle at a press conference at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show. The xB was first introduced in early 2003 for the 2004 model year and its boxy shape became iconic to the Scion brand.
"No one in the automotive industry is as hard-wire-connected to its owners as is Scion, and the 2008 xB is a perfect example," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "We've stated in the past that we'll probably always have a box in the Scion lineup, but our owners told us they wanted a bigger box. They talk, we listen and we responded with a bigger and better xB."
Distinct Scion Style
Like the previous generation xB, the all-new 2008 model was styled with distinctiveness in mind. This aggressive new compact applies design elements from the t2B concept vehicle that was shown at the 2005 New York International Auto Show.
These exterior styling cues include the soft angles between its wide and flat paneling, high beltline, elongated headlamps that wrap around the side of the vehicle, inset taillights, rectangular grille, pronounced fenders, and single rear backup light on the left bumper. The xB also features tinted rear windows, and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors.

Scion Bests E-Tailers With Recognition Among Young Consumers
SCION, TOYOTA MOTOR SALES U.S.A.'S brand founded in 2003 to appeal to Generation Y consumers, has 80% name recognition among young buyers, according to Cisco's Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG)'s second annual e-commerce survey, putting it ahead of other, well-established branded online retailers Sears, Target, Macys, Best Buy and Amazon.com.
Cisco's second annual e-commerce study ranks Scion above Amazon.com and Best Buy in building a top-branded customer experience for the under-35 online shopper.
Leading the survey at No. 1, despite not having even ranked last year, Scion's "spectacular success with their target market is the interactive and community-oriented nature of the Scion online experience," the survey finds. Key aspects of Scion's online strategy include:
* Clear customer focus: Scion customers are music fans, and Scion.com features a boom box where users can listen to "Scion" music while browsing the site. The site also promotes artists and lists concert information.
* Sophisticated customization tools: Users can build their own cars while on the site and save their choices at "My Scion."

Report: most cars still can't prevent whiplash
Rear crash protection in cars: seat/head restraints in two of every three models are marginal or poor
Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback.
ARLINGTON, VA — Seat/head restraint designs in 22 current car models are rated good for rear crash protection, but those in 53 other cars are rated marginal or poor. The latest evaluations of occupant protection in rear-end collisions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the seat/head restraints in more than 60 percent of car models fall short of current state-of-the-art protection from neck injury or whiplash.
The ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in a typical rear-end collision.
Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback. Seat/head restraints in 12 other car models are rated acceptable. These results show some improvement since the Institute began rear impact tests of seat/head restraints in 2004. Seats in only 8 car models earned good ratings in 2004.

Courrielche confirmed that the agency and Scion have approached networks about the show. That's how we would approach it, as a Scion-branded show, with Scion cars in it," he says.

Can Toyota’s Scion keep its edge?
For the automotive industry, it was the height of hip.
At the Chicago auto show, Toyota's Scion brand unveiled two new models in two versions — one for real life, and another for virtual shoppers in “Second Life,” the popular online universe. Visitors to “Scion City” in the virtual world could test drive the new xB and xD models and buy computer-simulated versions of the vehicles.
It was the latest effort by Toyota to keep the Scion brand relevant for its youthful target market, a task that is growing more complex as the brand gows with new models and stronger sales.

Let's Get Small: Kia Latest To Face Scion
DETROIT -- Thanks to Toyota's success with Scion, more carmakers are thinking small. And square-ish.
Kia, for one is preparing what marketing chief Ian Beavis calls a "Scion fighter." It's named Soul and hits the market next year. Shown as a concept at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the car sports a boxy design similar to a Scion xB.
"Scion has created a segment, and there is more and more room in that for others," Beavis said. "We've been in there, with the Rio, then Nissan came in with the Versa and Honda with the Fit, and it has lifted everyone's boats."
Kia has been studying Toyota's Scion brand for three years, he added, "but [we] don't plan to emulate them." Nor does Ford, but last week the No. 2 automaker confirmed it will finally enter the sub-compact segment in the next couple of years. The move also was seen as a rare nod by Ford to a Japanese competitor.
"It's an important segment for any automaker, but Toyota has done a masterful job with Scion," said Barry Engle, general manager of marketing at Ford. Chrysler has signed on with Chinese automaker Chery to jointly produce a small car for the Dodge brand, filling a lack in Chrysler's portfolio.

Scion Pre-Launches 2008 Model On Web
TOYOTA'S SCION DIVISION IS RUNNING a pre-launch campaign for its forthcoming 2008 xB, but it doesn't include TV or print. In some ways, it is as much about a multi-layer Web site as it is about the vehicle itself.
That's not unusual for Scion--which tends to rely more on viral and guerrilla, as well as grassroots, efforts more than traditional media. The new Web site is a waggish virtual world offering up an assortment of "places"--six in all, two more coming--that consumers can choose to visit, through which the xB roams and in which they can view ironic videos featuring people and animals with cubic heads.
The Torrance, Calif. company this week reported sales of 17,960 vehicles through February this year, and a 23% drop in sales, including a 29% drop in xB sales year-to-date through February.
Attik, San Francisco, which is Scion's agency, created the campaign--but did not shoot the 17 videos on the Web site. Rather, Attik says, the agency sent out a creative brief to more than 100 videographers, then culled the 17 from the 140 entries it received. The account has been with that shop from the get-go.

Scion going direct with new models
SCION WILL ROLL OUT A new version of its xB vehicle in late April and a new car, xD, this summer.
The Toyota division this month is launching a series of four- to-five-minute Webisodes introducing Scion's stable of racers and aimed at import drag-racing enthusiasts. Click here to see a short version of the films.
While Scion isn't promoting them widely beyond the site, Sheila Swanson, automotive promotions manager for Scion, says they may use the race cars in other marketing because "they don't look like typical drag racers. They look like great cars, and they photograph very well."
"Our goals are to appeal to people who are very into racing and to introduce new people to racing, especially younger consumers," she says.
And, she adds, import-car racing intersects with the much larger boom in after-market accessorizing, an essential pillar of the Scion marketing program when the division launched in 2004. "You have people just looking to do appearance modifications to cars, but there is a large core as well looking to do performance modifications ... as a part of 'tuning,' racing has always been a part of car culture."
To support the forthcoming redux of xB, the new xD and the entire lineup, Scion will launch three national ride and drive programs, visiting 96 cities this year: first, a six- to-eight-week program launching in May; another tour in August, followed by a full-line road show that will run through November.

Scion Stages World Premiere of All-New 2008 xD at 2007 Chicago Auto Show

CHICAGO -- Scion revealed the all-new 2008 xD five-door subcompact at a press conference today at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.
"The xD is a clever new take on the five-door urban subcompact, with style and flair to match its efficiency and utility," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "The xD's aggressive styling is wrapped in a small, agile package, while its interior offers impressive details and a spacious cabin."
The xD's futuristic exterior characterizes it as a Scion with its simple surfaces and sharp lines that flow from front to rear. Its urban personality is communicated by its wide stance, thick muscular body, accentuated wheel flares and large tires. Other styling cues that set the xD apart include a long and narrow back window, and the Scion family traits -- horizontal headlamps, an integrated rectangular lower and upper grille, and turn signals built into the side mirrors.

Student-Designed Vehicles Bridge Transitional Lifestyles

Toyota and Calty Design Research, a Toyota design studio, have unveiled student-designed vehicle concepts as part of the Bridge Project, a Toyota-sponsored program for the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, Mich.
Launching in September 2005, the Bridge Project challenged CCS students to create a bridge vehicle to pull current Scion customers into the Toyota brand as they mature and experience lifestyle transitions. Twenty CCS juniors participated in the TMS- and Calty- sponsored project, which allowed students to develop a vehicle concept and strategy while infusing Toyota's key design principles dubbed Vibrant Clarity and J-factor.
"The need for a vehicle that moves us effortlessly into new life chapters was the challenge behind the Bridge Project," says Kevin Hunter, Calty vice president of design and studio operations. "Scion customers need the right Toyota vehicle as they grow into different life phases like marriage, family and employment."
The Bridge Project encouraged students to innovate a vehicle which could be introduced in 2012. While the Bridge Project was open to all vehicle segments, students were challenged to create a concept which took
vehicle purpose, market influences and buyer demographics into consideration.
"The Bridge Project challenged our students to develop the right cars for transitional life phases," said Bryon Fitzpatrick, Paul and Helen Farago Chair of Transportation Design at CCS. "For more than a decade, we
have partnered with Toyota on educational initiatives through sponsored projects and student internships which reflect their ongoing commitment to and support for design education."
For nearly 15 years, TMS and Calty have sponsored design education initiatives at premier design education institutions such as CCS and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif.

Toyota smashes own sales record -- up 12.9% in 2006
Toyota Reports 2006 and December Sales
Torrance, CA - With eleven consecutive years of record-breaking sales, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported total best-ever year-end sales of 2,542,524 vehicles, up 12.9 percent over 2005.
"2006 was a respectable year for the industry if you consider the strain of erratic fuel prices and a housing bubble on an industry weaning itself from incentives," said TMS Executive Vice President Jim Lentz.
Camry became the best-selling car in America for the fifth consecutive year and the ninth time in the past decade. Lexus retained its crown as the best-selling luxury brand in America for the seventh consecutive year, selling a total of 322,434 units in 2006, up 6.8 percent over 2005. With overall sales of 173,034, Scion was a significant contributor to the record sales year.

Overall, super small cars get mangled in accidents
First crash tests of minicars: Nissan Versa earns the highest overall rating; three minicars earn poor ratings in side tests
ARLINGTON, VA — For the first time, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has tested the smallest vehicles sold in the US market, which gain popularity as fuel prices rise. Now these cars are rated for comparison of occupant protection in front, side, and rear crashes. The Nissan Versa earns good ratings in all three tests. Two other cars earn good ratings in front and side but not rear tests.
Crash test results indicate which vehicles in each weight category afford the best protection in real-world crashes, and this round of tests reveals big differences among the smallest cars. But results of real crashes show that any car that's very small and light isn't the best choice in terms of safety. Driver death rates in minicars are higher than in any other vehicle category. They're more than double the death rates in midsize and large cars.
"People traveling in small, light cars are at a disadvantage, especially when they collide with bigger, heavier vehicles. The laws of physics dictate this," says Institute president Adrian Lund. Death rates in single-vehicle crashes also are higher in smaller vehicles than in bigger ones.

2006 Scion Art Car Series
DAVID CHOE, MIKE GIANT, AND INVISIBLE:MAN FLEX CREATIVE MUSCLE ON 2006 SCION ART CARS
With no direction other than having no limitation on creativity, three of the art communities finest tackled the task of creating Scion’s 2006 art cars. The customized xB vehicles, created by art legends David Choe and Mike Giant, and street-wear designer and fashion boutique owner invisible:man, were unveiled at the 2006 Las Vegas SEMA show.
Each artist stamped their creation with their own personal style. David Choe’s vision was a hand-painted monster truck outfitted with a drum kit. Lowrider chic was the theme of Mike Giant’s chop top xB. And invisible:man created his version of a world rally championship racer. Please see the artists’ bios below for more information on their background.
David Choe
(http://www.davidchoe.com )
Choe is one of the more diverse and prolific artists working today. He is one of the youngest artists to ever have a solo show at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. His work has been shown on every surface from canvases to human bodies to the third world’s war torn walls. It can be found in every facet of society, from formal galleries and museums to t-shirts, shoes, movies, billboards, cars, murals, from New York City to the African Congo, and everywhere in between.

Toyota Plans to Cut Scion Production to Keep Brand Unique
Scion, Toyota's youth-focused brand, is on track to beat its 150,000-units-a-year sales goal by 25,000 vehicles in 2006. Still, in order to keep the brand special and fresh, Scion plans to cut production to keep sales from going above 150,000 vehicles next year, reports The Wall Street Journal.
"I agree with the strategy," said Lyly Lao who works in sales at West Covina Scion in California. "Everybody is trying to be different, so it's important for Scion to not put too many cars out there, or they will be everywhere." George Peterson, president of marketing research firm, AutoPacific Inc., approves of Scion's decisions but questions whether dealers will support Scion's cut in vehicle production. He asserts that Scion could sell 250,000 vehicles a year if it weren't for production controls.
However, for Toyota, "Scion's importance isn't so much added volume as it is bridging the gap to younger buyers who consider the company's mainline Toyota brand vehicles too stodgy." About 80 percent of people who buy a Scion have never had a Toyota. Yet, when Scion owners trade in their vehicle, eight of the top 10 vehicles they opt for next are either Scions or other Toyota models.

Toyota recalling 30,000 Scions over air bags
WASHINGTON - Toyota Motor Corp. said Tuesday it was recalling about 30,000 Scion TC sports coupes over concerns that the side air bags could inadvertently deploy if the door is slammed forcefully.
The recall affects about 20 percent of the tCs produced during the 2005 and 2006 model years, Toyota said. The vehicle is only sold in the United States.
The automaker said seat-mounted side air bags and side curtain air bags could deploy if the door on that side of the vehicle is closed forcefully while the ignition is on or within 90 seconds of when the ignition is turned off.

Toyota's Success Tightens Dealership Space for Scions
As Toyota continues to enjoy booming sales for nearly all of its models, dealers are scrambling to make room at dealerships for their youth-oriented brand, Scion. To remedy the situation, the automaker expects all its dealers to renovate their showrooms by 2010 under an architectural plan called Image USA II.
That plan calls for a greatly enlarged Scion space, including an entrance separate from Toyota showrooms. So far 85 dealerships have made the changes, reports Automotive News. Of the 1,222 Toyota dealerships nationwide, 918 include the Scion franchise.

Scion design: you can win a chance to design the next Scion showroom

Toyota launches Showroom Design Contest that takes place entirely online
Geared for youthful car buyers, Scion is the latest line of cars from Toyota Motor Corporation. To carve out a home for the brand, the car manufacturer has launched an international showroom design competition, Scion Floorplan.
Applicants should submit a written description and a complete design concept for a 750-square-foot showroom online. The first prize winner will take home $5,000—and earn the opportunity to see his or her idea realized. Second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.
Each concept must include what the manufacturer calls the Discovery Area, an area to communicate the brand and educate potential buyers, and the Consultation Area, a semi-private space for sales consultants.
The winning entry will be selected in December by Scion executives and retail environment design firm Commune based on creativity, manufacturability, functionality, and appropriateness to the Scion brand and the buyer.
“Since the brand’s inception we have worked to support musicians, artists, and filmmakers,” says Alan Mimaki, business operations manager for Scion. “We are very excited to add architects and interior designers and look forward to see their visions of the next generation Scion showroom.”
More information is available on the Scion Floorplan Web site.

Vehicle Stability Control Expands Throughout The Toyota Lineup
The Toyota Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system was first introduced in select Lexus models in 1997. The system was designed to help reduce lateral skids caused by sudden steering inputs or abrupt changes in road conditions. Since its introduction, VSC has become available on a wide range of Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles.
Past studies have concluded that a significant number of one-car accidents resulting in serious injury are caused by lateral skidding conditions, and loss of driver control, often due to sudden steering input or changing road conditions on curves.
The VSC system is designed to help reduce lateral skids through active control of the brakes and engine output, such as when the driver steers abruptly, or when turning on slippery road surfaces. VSC works in concert with anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control (TRAC) systems help prevent straight-line skids and lateral skids.

Scion extends reach into cybergames

Scion just became first automaker to run a campaign in Second Life, releasing virtual cars in the popular metaverse. Toyota's progressive brand announced the initiative at the Second Life Community Convention in San Francisco.
While a real-world version of the boxy Scion xB was driven around a parking lot near the convention center, silver virtual models were dropped at various points in Second Life for residents to drive. A full launch will follow in October, when SL citizens will be able to customize Scion models. Makes sense, considering Scion already lets buyers do a fair amount of customization on real-world cars. For images of Scion's launch in Second Life, see intellagirl's coverage of the event. (Thanks to Cyrus Huffhines at Millions of Us for lending us an xB!)
Second Life is only accessible for people over 18, so Scion also launched in Whyville, a virtual world for teenagers. Residents of Whyville can buy a Scion with clams (the local currency), customize the car and drive their friends around. Since Whyville has an educational slant, teaching kids about everything from science to money management, members can take out a virtual loan through the site's Club Scion and Toyota Financial Services. Scion launched in Whyville in May and over 1,200 Scions have been purchased since.

Scion to launch "Scratcher" advertising campaign
Scion is launching an innovative advertising campaign that will begin this September. The campaign is called “Scratcher,” and it challenges the passerby to find two of the same customized-style cars in a lottery ticket style scratch off format. This being Scion, no two cars are alike. Building Wallscapes, Wild Postings and Max Rack Postcards and magazines will all be used as the campaign’s mediums.
For the Wallscapes, it will start with one car revealed and then every two days a new car will be revealed, to keep the regular commuters engaged. Additionally, Max Racks will have a postcard for each model, where the customer can actually ‘scratch-off’ all of the cars. The Wild Postings will allow passersby to scratch off as well, just on a larger format.

Is Toyota's quality slipping?
Executives of U.S. automakers often grouse when their vehicles are disparaged for defects and lapses in quality, saying models built by foreign automakers, especially Toyota Motor Corp., aren't judged as harshly.
The bellyachers now can count on a key ally in their campaign, as they put it, to level the playing field: Katsuaki Watanabe, the president of Toyota.

Toyota sales up incredible 11.7% in July
In a down month, Toyota's report of a 11.7% sales increase is enough to make Detroit men weep. Year to date the Japanese juggernaut is up 10.1%.
Highlights include a 36.8% increase in Corolla sales, a 99.6% increase for the new Rav4 SUV, and 10,137 units sold of the new Yaris. Oh yeah, and Scion reported all-time best-ever monthly sales with 18,408 units sold.

Promotion: Toyota/Scion = Yaris

Taking a page from their successful Scion marketing strategy, Toyota is attempting to reach out to prospective buyers of their new subcompact, the Yaris, with an independent destination site, YarisWorks.
The site details times and locations for this summer's 12-city Drive it Yourself Tour, as well as a very neat, "virtual test drive" feature that has video of someobody driving a Yaris in the city of your choice, all online.
Beyond that, there's a bunch of features that are supposed to be hip, or cool, or social network-y, but personally, it looks like a jumble of bullshit, to me.

Japanese gov't reprimands Toyota
The transport ministry issued Toyota Motor Corp. with a directive Friday to clean up its act, after finding fault in the automaker's handling of information on car defects.
Toyota must report back to the Land, Infrastructure and Transport Ministry by Aug. 4 on improvements it is making to its recall procedures. The ministry said Toyota must better handle safety information, including consumer complaints, so it will be able to issue more timely recalls.
The current and two former heads of Toyota's quality control department are being investigated by police for alleged professional negligence over an eight-year delay in issuing a recall of Hilux Surf sport utility vehicles with faulty steering gear.

Toyota on Quality Hot Seat
TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp., plagued with a rise in vehicle recalls and facing a legal probe into past recall practice, vowed on Thursday to step up quality efforts, saying this was imperative to ensure continued growth.
Japan’s top auto maker, which has built its reputation on offering safe and reliable cars at reasonable prices, has recalled more than one million vehicles in Japan alone so far this year, and on Wednesday issued a recall of some 400,000 SUVs in the United States, its single-biggest market.
In a first for the company, Toyota is also being criminally investigated by prosecutors in Kumamoto, southern Japan, over whether its quality-control managers had wrongfully delayed a recall filing that could have prevented a road accident in 2004 that injured a couple and their three young children.

Third Recall in One Month for Toyota
In its third vehicle recall this month, Toyota Motor Corp. is calling back almost 420,000 cars worldwide, including 34,700 in the United States, to replace a faulty engine part.
Most of the recalled U.S. cars are Echo compacts, but they also include Prius hybrids.
Toyota said it had no reports of accidents or injuries, but the recall caps a bruising month for the automaker renowned for its vehicle quality.
Last week it recalled 367,500 sport utility vehicles, including premium Lexus RX models, because a piece in the front console area could come loose and lodge near the gas pedal.
Earlier in July, Toyota recalled 24,200 vans in Japan.

What is the Limit of Two Front Tires? A Look at the Front Wheel Drive Horsepower Wars

There is a relatively interesting trend that is going to come to a head over the next year: Horsepower wars of the front wheel drive compacts.
The idea of dropping a more productive engine into what is otherwise a light-n-cheap car is not new. The original mustang proved this to be a winning formula that has bred a fan-supported line for 40+ years.
There were also a few flops that a big engine just couldn't fix ... if the AMC Pacer is any example. The idea of beefing up a new generation of teenymobiles that happened to be front wheel drive started in the '80s with such lovable runabouts as the Civic CRX, Volkswagon Rabbit, and Corolla FX-16.
But those cars were pushing their relatively low-displacement engines to the likes of 120 HP... what seemed to be a perfect balance given their light weight. The new generations of cars have started to push big numbers... lets look at some of the factory numbers for cars you could buy today:

Saturn Ion: Would You Like it More if We Called it the S/Ion?

So, I'm liking the looks of this Saturn Ion "quad" coupe, and the price for the base model is only $13,490. That's with a 140-horsepower engine -- plus it has those cool mini-suicide quad doors behind the main, bigger doors [see pic below].
Now, if you're thinking somewhere in Scion tC territory, I'd take a look at the Saturn Ion, or S/Ion if we were trying too hard to be cool.
While the Scion tC does start at $16,840, that's with a 160-hp engine. You can beef up the Saturn Ion [S/Ion, aren't we cool?] to 170 hp with a performance package that will cost you $17,185.
So it's a bit of an over-under call, and you may not like the Ion, but it's worth checking out, all the same.

They Shoot Toyotas, Don't They?
Four people took home brand new Toyotas from the Washington Auto Show on Sunday, courtesy of a "Hands-on" contest, where entrants had to maintain contact with the car of their yearning for the better part of 102 hours.
Over the five days contestants got 15 minute breaks every three hours, and at the end of the run, there were ten folks still hanging on, leading to an elimination round. There was a Rav4, Scion tC and a Camry on the floor, with a fourth car, a Toyota Prius, given away to an online contestant who guessed the other winners.
Pictured from left to right: Fredy Guzman [Winner of Scion tC], Paige Kitson [Winner of Rav4 for CrisisLink, a suicide prevention org], Gregory McAurthur [Winner of Camry]. Not pictured: Ron Sadler [online winner of Toyota Prius].
For the culturally anemic, the title of this post is from the movie, based on the book.

Scion xA -- Sorry, No Clowns Available

When it comes right down to it, the reason most people buy a certain vehicle is because it's the one they can afford.
When contemplating a vehicle like the 2006 Scion xA, with an MSRP of $13,330, this fundamental comes clearly into view. For those buying this vehicle, price is likely a major consideration. At the same time, someone buying the xA probably works harder for their money than someone who can walk into a BMW dealership and write a check.
As a matter of fact, we were chatting with a non-English speaking maintenance man who saw us get in the car, and he remarked that the car was new, and he asked, "Is it a Toyota engine? It's good, Toyota." After talking about the car, we got to price, and the total wasn't so important to him as what the monthly payments might be.
Therefore, the xA has to hit the basics square on for potential buyers. As you can see in this photo, one of the things we were curious about was its ability to get stuffed, so to speak. We went to Staples and dropped our semi-annual $250 on office supplies, and with the seats folded, there was no problem. Ditto for a trip to a new Whole Foods that opened, where we went with a friend and walked out with over a dozen bags of organic happiness.
In the former case, we folded the seats down and didn't have to use the front passenger seat. In the latter, with a passenger aboard, we just put the bags in the hatch area and was avble to keep the seats up. By the way, the xA has a neat little retractable storage area cover that you can take out for larger loads.
While we are going to post a more complete review, we thought it would be a good idea to get away from the dweeby stuff and just report on the basics -- how a car helps lyou live your life day to day. Overall, we're very happy with the xA, as we feel anyone spending their hard-earned money would be.

A keyless Scion Security System with a radar intrusion sensor helps protect this highly-equipped xB. Individual numbered badging completes the uniqueness of this vehicle.
Only 2,200 units of the xB Release Series 3.0 will be built. The xB Release Series 3.0 model will carry a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $2,310 over the base price of the xB. The base MSRP for the xB starts at $14,030.

The Shape of Scions to Come?

This is the 2nd-generation Toyota bB, to be sold in Japan, and darn if it doesn't look like a sheet metal makeover of a Scion xB.
Actually, since the first bB was introduced in 2000, it's the other way around.
Anyway, Toyota is touting the new bB as "a car-shaped music player," due to its nine speakers, including a subwoofer in the center console.
But Toyota may think they have more of a love wagon on their hands, thanks to this benny:
"The newly developed "Mattari-mode seats" ("laid-back" mode seats) in the front not only recline, they sink about 80mm to create a couch-like feeling. This delivers an unprecedented feeling of relaxation and privacy."
As far as the Stateside xB is concerned, Toyota is going to have to do something with the refrigerator box on wheels design.
We like them, and they have a certain sort of funky flair, but they are so way out as to be on the bleeding edge of fickle faddishness, which can doom sales in a hurry. Rest assured that Toyota/Scion folks are working on a reimagining of the xB.

Turbocharge your tC
You can pump up your Scion tC's horsepower by as much as 25% with this warranty-OK turbocharger from Toyota Racing Development.
The retail MSRP is $3200, though the folks at TRD tell us you can get it cheaper from a Toyota/Scion dealer. And that's a smart thing to do, because if you don't have it installed by authorized personnel the warranty on both the car and the turbocharger ees no good, senor.
The PDF brochure for the turbocharger is vague on actual horsepower numbers, but the TRD site says you can get up to 200 hp out of your tC, which comes standard with 160 hp, as you can read in this spec sheet. The turbocharger can only be installed in a manual transmission tC, BTW.

Scion Swag on Sale

Scion accessories, aka "Scionware" are being offered at prices 40% off the regular retail price -- but only through December 31, 2005. After that, full price.
How can you go wrong with a $3 pen or key chain? The $12 backpack doesn't look too bad, either. The clothes don't move us that greatly, but if you're in the market for a hooded sweatshirt, $18 ain't bad. Here's the link.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #125: Let the Salesman Speak!
Now this is a brainstorm -- Car Buyer's Notebook is now accepting video and audio clip entries from car sales professionals, in which they describe a vehicle they sell -- and try to convince our audience that it is a "must buy."
Clips MUST be between 30 and 45 seconds long, and in the case of video, should show the salesperson either in front of or sitting inside the vehicle.
In order to enter, clips must be e-mailed to us at editor@carbuyersnotebook.com, and they MUST come from a recognizable dealership address and also include the dealer's phone number.
That's it. We're specifically are excluding dealer principals and/or managers. We want to hear from the sales people. Our goal is to give our audience a different, fun kind of content, to get the retail side of the industry involved and also, to show new vehicle salespeople in a light they don't often get to present themselves in. We're excited about this!

You Can Win a Slot in the 30th Annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race
To secure your position behind the wheel of a "race-ready Scion tC" on April 8, 2006, you have to be the winning bidder of an eBay auction that runs from January 16 to 26.
Toyota is granting the right for a non-pro, non-famous person to join in the fun so they can donate the winning bid amount to the Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach.
What do you think the winning bid will be Over a 100K? A million? Let's hope some celebrity-obsessed gavone doesn't win.
What the winning bidder receives sounds like a trip to fast car heaven:
-- Chance to drive the Scion tC more than 100 mph in the 10-lap sprint over the 1.97-mile, 11-turn Long Beach street circuit.
-- Four days of professional driver's training at Fast Lane Driving School.
-- Pre-event Press Day prior to race weekend and other media activities.
-- Custom-made driving gear, including suit, shoes, gloves and helmet.
-- First-class air fare and hotel accommodations for training, press day and race weekend, with ground transportation for race related events only.
-- $5,000 donation from Toyota in the high bidder's name to "Racing for Kids," a national non-profit program benefiting two children's hospitals in Southern California.
-- A VIP pass for two for a private celebrity event immediately following the Saturday, April 8.

Toyota Factoid: From AA to xA

While reading The Lexus Story, we came across a neat Toyota factoid -- their first production model was the AA, pictured above.
Which led us to muse, "Coincidence? We don' think so."
We are, of course, referring to the nomenclature of the Scion brand models -- the xA, xB and tC. The collusion runs deeper when you understand that Toyota also made a convertible version, known as the model AB.
In other words, someone at Toyota decided to dig deep into their own history and celebrate the birth of a new brand while honoring the birth of their first. Symmetry.
We also came across another mini-mystery -- in the Lexus book, the date given for Toyota's maiden year was 1938. However, at this Toyota Museum site, they claim the model was actually built in 1936.
Confusinng, yes, but comforting in a way. It shows car companies have been playing with model year vs. calendar year for nearly seven decades!
By the way, we produced a really fine audio review of The Lexus Story in this podcast.

The Scion xB is getting a seat fabric upgrade and a steering wheel with audio controls, to go along with a modest price increase of $150.
Two exterior colors -- Camouflage Green and Black Cherry Pear -- are being retired, and will be replaced with Salsa Red Pearl and Shadow Mica.
MSRP for the Scion xB with a manual transmission will be $14,030, the automatic costs $14,830.
The price increase applies to mid-2006 xBs that will start arriving at Scion dealerships on the West Coast at the end of the month.

Toyota's Recalls 2.4 Million Vehicles in Drive for Number One
Toyota may unseat General Motors as the largest automaker in the world, based on preliminary production estimates first reported in the Asahi Shimbun, but that drive to the top is making a dent in the automaker's vaunted quality.
Toyota reports they have recalled 2.4 million vehicles in the United States in 2005, compared to 210,000 in 2003. At the same time, GM has recorded 4 million in '05, though all parties say that recalls have become less dramatic in recent years, due to broader criteria for bringing vehicles into dealerships to repair often minor flaws.
The Japanese newspaper reports that Toyota plans to produce at least 8.9 million vehicles in 2006, while GM's production for 2005 is approximately 9.089 million.
The claim that Toyota may overtake GM in '06 is based on an assumption that GM's plant closings and lower sales will prompt the automaker to produce even less vehicles next year. Thus, Toyota could possibly pass GM on its way up as GM drifts downward in terms of global manufacturing.

November Sales: Toyota Gains 10%
Toyota's three brands were up 10% in November, over the same month last year, putting the powerhouse up 9.9% for the year. As we've previously reported, Toyota broke 2 million in sales a full month earlier than they did last year, and actually beat the Chrysler Group in November.
Though the overall picture for Toyota is good, their two most popular models, the Camry and Corolla, both had sales declines, 3.4% and 4.% respectively. The newly redesigned Avalon is still kicking tail, however, up 262.5%, and the Prius remains the best-selling hybrid vehicle on the market, with 7,889 sold in November. With 98,870 units sold, the Prius will become the first hybrid to sell over 100,000 units in a calendar year.
All three Scion models scored sales increases, and with 144,028 sold, this sub-brand will easily break the 150,000 unit mark in 2005.
In trucks, the Toyota Tacoma steamed ahead with a 24.4% increase, and has cemented its spot as the best selling small pickup in the U.S. The full-size Tundra also scored an impressive 25.4% gain in November, and is up 10.1% for the year with 110,897 units sold.
Lexus was up 12.1%, and it all came from cars -- their SUVs were down 7.9%, with all three models suffering drops. The new Lexus IS platform sold 4,447 units, for a 664.1% increase, the GS 330 was up 446.2% and the GS 430 was up 335.2%. For the year to date, Lexus is up 4.8%

November Sales: Toyota Outsells Chrysler Group
As the November sales results roll in, we're not just looking at raw numbers, we are looking for meaning in the Excel-based tea leaves. And this one just jumped right out at us -- Toyota's three brands outsold Chrysler's three, 169,665 to 159,898.
That puts Toyota ahead of Chrysler by 6.1% [9,767] for the month. There's no danger of Toyota taking the number three spot in the U.S. by year-end, though, as Chrysler is still ahead by 58,367 units.
However, Toyota's sales are up 9.8% for the year to date, and Chrysler's are up 5% -- is it possible that Toyota could become the third best selling automaker in the U.S. In 2006? It will be a close race, that's for sure, but Chrysler is banking on 10 new vehicle introductions next year, and hopes to build on its forward momentum.
Also of note – Toyota passed the 2 million unit mark a full month earlier this year – 2004 was the first full year Toyota ever sold 2 million in the U.S., whereas they now stand at 2,057,017 for the year to date.
