Top Selling Crossovers in the United States for May 2008
With total SUV sales down 19.5% in May, not even the crossover segment was able to escape unscathed -- the smaller ute/station wagon category was also down 5%, as consumers decided they didn't even want mini-SUVs over more fuel efficient cars.
Besides the usual suspects a couple vehicles did well in consumers' quest for smaller wagons, including the Dodge Journey, Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester. Also of note is that GM placed both the GMC Acadia and Saturn Vue in the top 15, which is good news for that new platform, and for the parent company that suffered a big blow for the month.
After the jump, the top 15 best selling crossovers for May 2008:

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download
The EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.
In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.
To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Current Auto Rebates Has All the Updated Rebates!
With auto sales down 4.3% in January 2008, many automakers are increasing the rebate and incentive offers they have on the hoods of their vehicles.
Yet keeping track of all the rebate programs can be difficult work, which is why we began publishing Current Auto Rebates, the Internet's first document that lists every rebate program for every vehicle for same in the United States.
This 13-page PDF makes it easy for you to look up rebates on any model you're interested in, and even allows you to contact your local dealer who will give you a free price quote on the ride of your choice.
Since rebate programs can change several times per month, you may want to sign up for free updates to the publication -- when we update the document you'll get an email from us letting you know a refreshed version is available for you to download.
And if someone you know is currently shopping for a new vehicle, you may want to download a copy and email it to them -- they'll thank you for doing so!

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow
It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.
Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?
In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:
1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.
2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.
3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.
4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.
5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.
6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.
This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!
Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.
The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:
-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!
-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.
-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.
-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]
-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

Luxury-Car Dealers Lure Super Rich
Several dealership chains have begun giving their luxury-car showrooms multimillion-dollar makeovers with the goals of creating the look and feel of five-star hotels for customers, increasing the dealerships' car allocations and even making it less likely that rival dealerships will pop up nearby.
AutoNation, for example, recently opened a gleaming glass-and-stone Lexus store in Palm Beach with a sales floor made of polished porcelain tile. Walls and counters are accented with cherry and bird's-eye maple veneer. "Guests"--as Lexus calls its customers--leave their cars with a valet and are then guided by a personal concierge to a European-style coffee bar offering complimentary java and a selection of pastries prepared by a chef trained in Rome.
The rise of super-luxury dealerships reflects the country's growing ranks of wealthy individuals and the ways companies are trying to cater to them. At hotels, for example, five stars are now nearly passé, with more and more six- and seven-star properties cropping up around the world.

Buy A Lexus For Yourself
TOYOTA'S TYING ONE ON AGAIN. The company's Lexus unit is launching its yearly red-ribbon campaign, its year-end clearance push to make way for '08 models.
The eight-year-old campaign proffers the idea of a Lexus as a gift, complete with a big red bow. The company says the new effort keeps with the gifting campaign, but with a twist. In one of the new spots, the person getting the Lexus is the person giving it.
Lexus says that almost 10% of Lexus vehicles sold during the holidays are purchased as gifts, and that Lexus dealers extend the creative element of the ads with enormous red bows for people who buy the cars as presents.

The 2007 "December to Remember" campaign returns to its roots with the surprise element, while also reaching out to a new shopper -- the self-giver. In its eighth year, the advertising campaign still resonates with consumers and is as anticipated as the traditional Clydesdales or polar bear campaigns that also air during the holidays.

Torrance, CA -- Fifty years ago today, when tailfins defined the cutting edge of automotive styling and a handful of import auto companies struggled to sell 83,000 units, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. began marketing quality cars and trucks in the United States.
TMS opened for business in America on October 31, 1957, in Southern California, and started selling cars the following summer. By the end of 1958, it had sold just 287 Toyopet Crown sedans and one Land Cruiser – a far cry from 2006 sales of more than 2.5 million cars and trucks.

Lexus IS F Designer Pursues Goal for 30 Years

What is it that's said about the irresistible force?
Anyone encountering an engineer named Yukihiko Yaguchi might just find out first hand, for he's an irresistible force that's created a highly movable object.
Yaguchi is a very convincing, compelling guy, but he's also quiet and self effacing. Once he gets hold of you, you not only can't help but like him, you can't help but want to help him accomplish whatever it is that he's up to.
Plenty of people have learned that lesson, and there's solid evidence to support it. The evidence sits on four fat, sticky tires. It's called the Lexus IS F.
In order to understand the IS F and its genesis, the first thing that you have to understand is that Yaguchi is an enthusiast, a performance hard case who loves to drive fine, responsive equipment.

The Lexus Formula
Enthusiasts who just can't wait to settle their driving shoes into the 2008 Lexus
IS F, the V8-powered sports sedan designed to reset class standards for performance, handling, comfort and quality, most likely are thinking more about the car's ability to incinerate their favorite roads than they are about the etymology of its name.
But there's a story behind that name, a story that includes the V10-powered LF-A supercar concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show in January.
The story explains where the name came from, and it outlines the beginnings of the Lexus performance and quality heritage. It goes like this:

Toyota Reliability Slips in Consumer Reports' Survey
93 percent of Ford, Lincoln, Mercury models in survey score average or better
YONKERS, N.Y. -- After years of sterling reliability, Toyota is showing cracks in its armor, according to data from Consumer Reports' 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey. By contrast, Ford's domestic brands have made considerable improvements. The announcement was made before the Detroit-based Automotive Press Association (APA) today at the Detroit Athletic Club.
The V6 version of the company's top-selling Camry, and the four-wheel-drive V8 version of the Tundra pickup, both redesigned for 2007, now rate below average in Consumer Reports' predicted reliability rating. In addition, the all-wheel-drive version of the Lexus GS sedan also received a below average rating. Because Consumer Reports does not recommend models with below-average reliability, these models no longer make CR's "Recommended" list.

Bumpers on luxury cars aren't luxurious: worst is Infiniti G35
4 of 11 cars sustain more than $10,000 damage in 4 minor bumps
ARLINGTON, VA — Bumpers, even those on expensive cars, don't resist damage in low-speed impacts. The Infiniti G35, the worst performer, sustained almost $14,000 damage in a series of 4 tests conducted at 3 and 6 mph by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Saab 9-3 was the best, sustaining $5,243 damage. Only 3 cars sustained less than $6,000 damage, while 4 would cost more than $10,000 to fix.
"The Infiniti was a disaster, and even the Saab sustained way too much damage in these low-speed impacts," says Institute senior vice president Joe Nolan. "There shouldn't be much or any damage in collisions at these speeds, especially to expensive and presumably well-made cars."

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.
Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

Lexus aims for global domination
When Toyota Motor Corp. shipped the first Lexus cars to California in 1989, most Americans were underwhelmed by what looked like made-in-Japan versions of Mercedes-Benz sedans.
"Back when it started, there were a lot of questions whether Lexus would work or not," said Dave Illingworth, a senior vice president at Toyota who was in charge of Lexus when the brand was introduced.
Within 11 years, Lexus' emphasis on delivering reliable cars and pampering customers turned it into the best-selling luxury nameplate in the United States. Now Toyota hopes to repeat that success around the world and transform the premium brand conceived for the U.S. market into a global luxury nameplate to rival the leading German marques Mercedes and BMW, whose global sales are roughly twice that of Lexus.
Toyota has invested billions to expand and refine Lexus' lineup of cars and SUVs. Its engineers and designers are injecting more glamour and power each time a model comes due for redesign.
Most industry experts are betting that Toyota will succeed in establishing Lexus among the top marques. "They have that very good combination of advanced technology, excellent build quality and they're getting better on design," said Jack Nerad, editorial director at Kelley Blue Book.
But so far, the results of its global push are mixed.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!
Aren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?
I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.
Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]
In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.
Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:
1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.
2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.
And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Infiniti G35, Lexus ES350 & Nissan Maxima All Post 'Excellent' Test Ratings
Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lucerne, and Saab 9-5 achieve 'Very Good' overall scores
YONKERS -- Three of the six upscale sedans tested for the June issue of Consumer Reports, the Infiniti G35, Lexus ES350, and Nissan Maxima, posted "Excellent" overall ratings. It's rare for so many cars to be scored so highly in a monthly test group.
The top-scoring and sporty G35 now ranks as the best car tested by Consumer Reports in the Upscale Sedan category, outpointing the previously- tested Acura TL. The quiet and comfortable E350 came in very close behind the G35. The Maxima rated somewhat lower overall, though still achieving an Excellent overall road test score.
The test group brought together a total of six very different sedans in the $30,000 to $40,000 range, with varying blends of sportiness and opulence. The more posh models tend to be quieter, have more interior space and ride more smoothly. Sporty models usually have less room inside, ride firmly and handle more nimbly.
The three other vehicles rounding out the group, the Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lucerne, and Saab 9-5, all achieved "Very Good" overall ratings. The MKZ was previously called the Zephyr.

New Lexus Chief to Focus More on Personalization
Jim Farley, the new U.S. head of Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus division, said Friday he wants to take customer service to the next level by focusing more on personalization, which is something he learned about at the youth-oriented Scion brand.
In one of his first interviews since being named general manager of the Japanese car maker's luxury unit on Thursday, Mr. Farley said he is in the "shut up and listen" phase in his first position as head of a division. Mr. Farley succeeded Bob Carter, who became head of the Toyota division.
Mr. Farley, who was group vice president of Toyota marketing, added that his focus at Lexus will be on product execution, customer service and dealer profitability.
"The next stage for Lexus is more than just plasma screens at dealerships," Mr. Farley said. "I'm really interested in personalized service. Our customers are all different and with today's technology, you can capture that information and use it in customer transactions."
Already the top-selling luxury brand in the U.S., Lexus is embarking on new product launches that will determine where the brand can move in the future. Lexus is introducing its first vehicle with a price tag of more than $100,000, the Lexus LS 600h, a hybrid version of its redesigned, top-of-the-line sedan. The vehicle competes with the Mercedes's S-Class and BMW 7-series sedans.
Lexus is also launching a performance series next year, similar to Mercedes-Benz's AMG series and BMW's M models, and will soon have a super sports car that has more than 500 horsepower.

Does Driving Green Mean Buying Lean?
COSTA MESA, Calif. -- If you're in the market to buy a Green vehicle, but worry you'll sacrifice the amenities, power, spaciousness or curb appeal of a standard, gas-powered car, the experts at NADAguides.com say there are plenty of options available for the distinguished Green Car buyer. Today, they released a list of just some of their top picks.
When evaluating "Green Cars," NADAguides.com lead auto expert, Mark Perleberg, said the company took into consideration various vehicles in a variety of categories, including those powered by a combination of gas and electric engines -- or "hybrids" (known for their fuel efficiency and their cleaner burning engines) -- natural gas cars, and even those powered by diesel fuel.

Report: most cars still can't prevent whiplash
Rear crash protection in cars: seat/head restraints in two of every three models are marginal or poor
Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback.
ARLINGTON, VA — Seat/head restraint designs in 22 current car models are rated good for rear crash protection, but those in 53 other cars are rated marginal or poor. The latest evaluations of occupant protection in rear-end collisions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the seat/head restraints in more than 60 percent of car models fall short of current state-of-the-art protection from neck injury or whiplash.
The ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in a typical rear-end collision.
Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback. Seat/head restraints in 12 other car models are rated acceptable. These results show some improvement since the Institute began rear impact tests of seat/head restraints in 2004. Seats in only 8 car models earned good ratings in 2004.

Lexus getting a facelift
To Woo Wealthy, Lexus Attempts Image Makeover
It Seeks Luxury Cachet Like Gucci and Prada; $100,000 Sticker Price
For years, Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus division pitched its cars as the practical alternative to European luxury brands like BMW and Mercedes. And over time, the Lexus brand came to be known as kind of expensive, always respectable -- and a little boring.
"Lexus cars are made to be luxurious and forgettable," says Ryan Wilsey, a 29-year-old Boston resident who works in venture capital. Formerly an owner of a Porsche Boxster, Mr. Wilsey's dream cars are a BMW M3 coupe or a Ferrari.
Now, with Toyota's sales hitting new records, it craves a makeover for Lexus. It wants to become a brand associated with the biggest names in luxury. Imagine "Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci and Lexus all mentioned in the same breath," says Brian Bolain, a Lexus marketing manager.
To get there, Lexus, a company known for its ultra-conservative culture, is introducing a slew of new vehicles costing over $70,000 -- more than anything Lexus has previously sold and nearly twice the price of its best-selling RX sport-utility vehicle. It deployed a "super affluent team," a group that traveled the country asking the ultra-rich what they want. It is throwing lavish parties around the country and cozying up with brands like Vogue Magazine and Neiman Marcus stores.
The best-selling luxury car brand in the U.S., Lexus is hardly struggling. Sales grew a healthy 7% to 322,000 vehicles last year. The company has no plans to move away from lesser-priced vehicles like the $33,470 ES and the $30,255 IS sedan, which together generate more than a third of the brand's sales. But Lexus, which is sold only in certain foreign markets, still lags well behind the world-wide sales of the BMW and Mercedes brands, which together sold more than 179,000 cars last month alone.

Tax Guidance for Hybrid/Alternative-Fuel Car Owners
Tax credits on 14 vehicles benefit green car buyers
CHICAGO -- Hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles are well-known for their green credentials, but they can also save you money on your taxes. We've taken the guesswork out of tax credits for green vehicle buyers by offering consumers information about cars that qualify for a credit and explaining how and when credits for popular hybrid vehicles are expected to be phased out.
Thanks to the Energy Policy Act of 2005, certain cars purchased in 2006 can earn credits of up to $4,000 and there is still time for buyers to take advantage of these credits in their 2006 filing. To be eligible for the credits, vehicles have to fall into one of four categories: fuel cell, advance lean burn technology, hybrid or alternative fuel. Currently, the only mass- market cars that qualify are hybrids and one natural-gas-powered car, the Honda Civic GX.
The IRS offers credits on a total of 14 cars, ranging from $250 to $4,000. Here is a list of those cars and their corresponding credits:

Actively Safe: Avoiding Accidents Before They Happen

Lexus Ad Campaign for New RX 350 'Rewinds' Effects of a Collision in Real Time
TORRANCE, Calif. -- On the count of six, the buildings start to move. On 13, the car gets a new fender. The pigeons come in on 15, the butterflies on 21, and the miraculous transformation is complete by 24.
It's difficult to change the world in less than 30 seconds but that's exactly what happens in two TV commercials in a new ad campaign from Lexus. The campaign, titled "Actively Safe," highlights the benefits of 14 active safety features offered in the automaker's new 2008 RX 350, Lexus' top-selling vehicle. The spots show what it might look like to "rewind" the effects of an accident. But what's most surprising is how Lexus chose to do this -- or perhaps more accurately, not to do it.
Both spots were filmed entirely in real time, using only one camera, and in a single 30-second shot -- no computer generated images (CGI), cuts or edits. Even the dent repairs were done in real time.
"Because safety is such an emotional topic, we wanted to keep things on a human scale, with real actors moving real sets in real time," says Deborah Meyer, vice president of marketing for Lexus. "It's rare to say this in an era of special effects, but everything you see really happened in one shot."

Lexus Partners With the USGA
Lexus Also Expands Its Professional Golf Team
Lexus and the United States Golf Association (USGA) announced an unprecedented multi-year partnership that makes Lexus the automotive partner of the USGA and the official vehicle of the U.S. Open, U.S. Women's Open, U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Amateur. Lexus Extends Deal With TiVo
LEXUS IS EXTENDING A SPONSORSHIP arrangement with DVR company TiVo that dates back to 2000.
Last May, Lexus advertising on TiVo let subscribers use TiVo broadband to configure Lexus vehicles, a function universally offered on automaker Web sites, but rarely beyond the confines of computer screens.
Andrea Lim, Lexus media manager, said the new arrangement is open-ended, and that the company has not determined which vehicles will be promoted on TiVo, or what the nature of the program will be.
"I think Lexus marketing as a whole approaches things with an extended outlook," she said. "And we evaluate things regularly until we see that a program has exhausted its benefits."
TiVo's appeal, she said, is that it allows consumers to control the marketing message and engage in it, not merely block advertisements. "We saw it as an emerging technology. I believe that consumers are comfortable with marketing messages. But they challenge advertisers to come up with unique, innovative ways to reach them. We are moving from being just an advertiser to more of a strategic partner."

The [Lexus] 460 Degrees Gallery: Light, Speed and Innovation
Lexus Presents Contemporary Art Exhibition in Four U.S. Cities to Launch All-New LS 460 Flagship Sedan
There is no map to innovation. The path to invention is laid with passion, confidence and, above all, uncommon vision. Those are the guiding principles behind "Light and Speed" at The 460 Degrees Gallery, a one-of-a-kind contemporary art experience presented by Lexus in Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Chicago.
Sebastien Agneessens, a prominent New York-based curator for the contemporary arts, curated the multi-media exhibition that brings together some of the freshest talents on the contemporary art scene. Shamim Momin, associate curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art, served as executive consultant. "Light and Speed" features conceptual photography by Miranda Lichtenstein, video art by Pascual Sisto and an architectural installation by Arne Quinze.
The 460 Degrees Gallery is hosting gala events, public seminars, premium tastings and presentations by luxury retailers. "The idea of 460 Degrees is that there's more to discover beyond what we see or even imagine can be," says Agneessens. The gallery opened in Los Angeles in October and has been an instant hit in each city. In New York, 460 Degrees Gallery had more than 13,000 visitors during its two-week run.

Toyota settles oil sludge cases
Owners complain that a buildup damaged engines
Jeff Meckstroth, a New Orleans stockbroker, bought a Lexus RX300 in late 1998 because of the luxury brand's reputation for quality.
Two years later, Meckstroth's opinion of Lexus, and its owner Toyota Motor Corp., changed when the engine in his car came to a clunking halt and the automaker blamed him for the problem.
"What was really disconcerting is that when we went into the Lexus dealership they said it wasn't covered under warranty due to lack of owner maintenance," Meckstroth said.
Meckstroth's long-running legal battle with Toyota, which grew into a class action over oil sludge damage, is expected to come to an end in early February.
Toyota Motor Sales USA, the U.S. sales arm of Japan-based Toyota, and lawyers representing car owners have reached an agreement that would cover engine repairs and incidental damages caused by oil sludge for up to eight years after the purchase of certain vehicles.
The vehicles include several Lexus and Toyota models, including the Camry, sold in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Camry became the best-selling car in the United States in 1997, based largely on its quality pedigree. It has held the top spot every year since, except for 2001 when it was second to the Honda Accord.
The case arose from customer complaints that oil sludge was building up in the engine and causing damage that required part or all of the engine to be replaced.

Lexus Unveils Two High-Performance Vehicles at the 2007 North American International Auto Show

January 8, 2007 - Detroit - Lexus unveiled the IS-F high-performance luxury sedan and the LF-A sports-car concept at a press conference today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
The all-new 2008 IS-F high-performance luxury sedan will deliver more than 400 horsepower from a 5.0-liter V8 engine when it goes into production. The LF-A supercar concept is equipped with a V10 engine that produces more than 500 horsepower. Together, the two exciting new cars make a dramatic statement of Lexus performance.
The IS-F and LF-A are very different vehicles, yet they share the same DNA, design philosophy, and heritage. Prominent in both vehicles, the "F" designation was first conceived nearly 20 years ago with a project internally coded "Circle-F," with the "F" standing for "flagship." This was the original code for what became the Lexus Division. The Circle-F designation further evolved into the code name Flagship One, or F1, and the first F1 concept developed into Lexus' first vehicle, the LS. Since then, the "F" code has come to signify a special vehicle program within Lexus that falls outside the normal engineering and development process.
"Lexus has long been perceived as the maker of mainstream luxury vehicles, but the unveiling of the IS-F and LF-A not only changes this perception, it also introduces a new Lexus marque," said Bob Carter, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. "The 'F' shared by both vehicles is the signature for a new high-performance marque conceived by an engineering team that dared to turn their dream of 'a Lexus like no other' into a reality."

Toyota smashes own sales record -- up 12.9% in 2006
Toyota Reports 2006 and December Sales
Torrance, CA - With eleven consecutive years of record-breaking sales, Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today reported total best-ever year-end sales of 2,542,524 vehicles, up 12.9 percent over 2005.
"2006 was a respectable year for the industry if you consider the strain of erratic fuel prices and a housing bubble on an industry weaning itself from incentives," said TMS Executive Vice President Jim Lentz.
Camry became the best-selling car in America for the fifth consecutive year and the ninth time in the past decade. Lexus retained its crown as the best-selling luxury brand in America for the seventh consecutive year, selling a total of 322,434 units in 2006, up 6.8 percent over 2005. With overall sales of 173,034, Scion was a significant contributor to the record sales year.
TMS reported best-ever overall sales month results of 228,322, an increase of 16.6 percent over the same period last year.

Luxury Brands Roll-Out Holiday Deals
Luxury brands are vying for the top sales spot in 2006 and are counting on the biggest sales month of the year to help make it happen, reports Automotive News.
December deals abound from luxury brands who count on the holiday season to pull forward sales. Here are a few of the deals going on right now: a $369 monthly lease payment on the 2007 BMW X3 3.0si crossover; a $549 lease payment on Mercedes' 2007 ML350 crossover and 4.9 percent financing on Mercedes' 2007 R350 crossover; and, Lexus is offering both lease and interest-rate support for 2007 models.
Marketing campaigns such as the 11-year-old Lexus "December to Remember" promotion, Mercedes' "Winter Sales Event" and BMW's "Holiday Wish Event" have magnified December sales peaks for luxury import brands for the past several years. By contrast, sales in the total U.S. auto market usually peak at midyear before model changeover. BMW is expected to sell the most luxury cars in the U.S. this year, surpassing 300,000 units sold.

The awards are unique in the United States because - instead of being given by a single publication, radio or television station - they are given by 49 automotive journalists from the United States and Canada.
The awards are designed to recognize the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. To be eligible, vehicles must be "all new" or "substantially changed" from the previous model.

Lexus GS450H Offers 'Seamless Power and a Silky Smooth Ride'
Lead Auto Expert, Mark Perleberg, Weighs in on the Car's Fuel Economy, Handling and Style
Lead Auto Expert, Mark Perleberg, of NADAguides.com (http://www.nadaguides.com/) -- a leading vehicle information website -- recently test drove the Lexus GS450H and today, he weighs in on the car's performance, fuel economy and styling.
"During our week-long test of the GS450H, we averaged 28.1 miles-per- gallon, with a range of over 400 miles between fill-ups," said Perleberg. "In addition to excellent fuel economy, we loved this car's seamless power and silky smooth ride."
According to Perleberg, the preferred choice of power since the beginning of car building has been electric motors, and many manufacturers have tried to capture that power throughout the years. It's only been in recent years, however, that the 'Hybrid Car' (half gas/half electric) has gained consumer awareness and confidence. Perleberg says that unfortunately, however, these gas sipping machines had only been offered in compact form ... until now.
"That's all changed with the introduction of the Lexus GS450H. This car offers the power of a V8 engine with the fuel consumption of a four-cylinder, wrapped in a sleekly roomy, luxuriously-styled package" said Perleberg.
