2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download

fuel_econ_guide_08.jpgThe EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.

In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.

To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Land Rover: Celebrating 60 Years and Going Strong

Land_Rover_logo.jpgIRVINE, Calif. -- 60 years ago today, a motoring icon made its public debut, when the original Land Rover was shown at a motor show in Amsterdam, on April 30, 1948. The current Defender is clearly descended from that first vehicle, known as a Series 1.

Extraordinarily, they even share a couple of original parts, an oil filler plug and a cleat for tying down the canvas roof. But the rest of the vehicle technology has moved on considerably.

Current Auto Rebates Has All the Updated Rebates!

With auto sales down 4.3% in January 2008, many automakers are increasing the rebate and incentive offers they have on the hoods of their vehicles.

Yet keeping track of all the rebate programs can be difficult work, which is why we began publishing Current Auto Rebates, the Internet's first document that lists every rebate program for every vehicle for same in the United States.

This 13-page PDF makes it easy for you to look up rebates on any model you're interested in, and even allows you to contact your local dealer who will give you a free price quote on the ride of your choice.

Since rebate programs can change several times per month, you may want to sign up for free updates to the publication -- when we update the document you'll get an email from us letting you know a refreshed version is available for you to download.

And if someone you know is currently shopping for a new vehicle, you may want to download a copy and email it to them -- they'll thank you for doing so!

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow

It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.

Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?

In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:

1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.

2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.

3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.

4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.

5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.

6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.

This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!

Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.

The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:

-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!

-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.

-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.

-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]

-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

Indian Co. in Lead to Buy Jaguar, Land Rover

Ford has entered into "focused negotiations at a more detailed level" with India's Tata Motors, meaning Tata has become the preferred bidder for its Jaguar and Land Rover units. "We will proceed with further substantive discussions with Tata Motors over the forthcoming weeks," says Lewis Booth, executive vice president of Ford's European units, in a statement.

Jaguar and Land Rover employees in the United Kingdom were told about the negotiations this morning shortly before the company made the announcement.

Ford spokesman Jay Ward in London would not say how much Tata has bid for the automakers, nor would he say if the other two bidders--Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra and U.S. private equity firm One Equity Partners LLC--were still in the running. Last month, people close to the negotiations said suitors had submitted bids that ranged from $1.5 billion to $2 billion.

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.

Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

Another former Ford Motor Co. executive has joined the bidding for Ford's Jaguar and Land Rover brands, the Associated Press reported, citing a person familiar with the negotiations Friday.

Nick Scheele has joined New York-based Ripplewood Holdings LLC in its bid for the luxury brands that cash-strapped Ford is trying to sell, according to the person, who requested anonymity because the bidding is ongoing.

Scheele served as Ford's president and chief operating officer from 2001 until his retirement in 2005. He also led Jaguar from 1992 to 1999.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Report: most cars still can't prevent whiplash

Rear crash protection in cars: seat/head restraints in two of every three models are marginal or poor

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback.

ARLINGTON, VA — Seat/head restraint designs in 22 current car models are rated good for rear crash protection, but those in 53 other cars are rated marginal or poor. The latest evaluations of occupant protection in rear-end collisions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the seat/head restraints in more than 60 percent of car models fall short of current state-of-the-art protection from neck injury or whiplash.

The ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in a typical rear-end collision.

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback. Seat/head restraints in 12 other car models are rated acceptable. These results show some improvement since the Institute began rear impact tests of seat/head restraints in 2004. Seats in only 8 car models earned good ratings in 2004.

Traditionally, update CDs and DVDs have been sold through Land Rover dealers, however, Phil Popham, Land Rover MD, says, “As a company we embrace the use of technology to develop the ownership experience and this is clearly demonstrated with this new facility. The ability to obtain the latest map information on-line gives our customers a simple, cost effective method of keeping their navigation systems updated.”

Land Rover sets global sales record in 2006

Land Rover has achieved a global sales record for the second year running. In 2006, the 4x4 manufacturer sold 192,500 vehicles around the world, an increase of 4 per cent (8,500 vehicles) on the previous year.

The year saw the USA become Land Rover's largest single market with a sales increase of 3.5 per cent. Sales in the highly competitive US market were driven by the phenomenal success of the Range Rover Sport, which saw an 80 per cent growth. There was also significant progress in emerging markets like Russia, which saw its sixth successive year of growth, and the Middle East and North Africa region where sales increased by 54 per cent and 43 per cent respectively.

LandRoverLR2_8656.jpg

The All-New Land Rover LR2 Sets New Standards For Premium Compact SUV Category

Land Rover North America today unveiled its new premium compact SUV, the Land Rover LR2, at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show. The fourth new model launched from Land Rover in just four years, LR2 joins the impressive line-up of Range Rover (2002), Land Rover LR3 (2004) and Range Rover Sport (2005) that together have seen record-breaking sales performance around the world.

New from the ground up, LR2 delivers outstanding on-road performance as well as the class-leading off-road ability of a Land Rover.

The coveted Award was presented before more than 1,200 business leaders, Parliamentarians and other VIPs at a prestigious gala ceremony, hosted by the BBC’s Fiona Bruce at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

Land Rover Chief Says Ford Will Not Sell Brand

Land Rover Managing Director Phil Popham said in an interview that growing sales and profitability should persuade Ford not to sell the brand as some industry analysts have said it should.

"You'd have to ask why, after all the billions of dollars invested [by Ford] in this business, this is the time to sell," said Mr. Popham. "The products we've got are the best we've had, and we're beginning to make the return [on investment] that Ford expects."

Land Rover's global sales rose 14 percent in 2005 to 185,120 vehicles. The brand's sales are up roughly 7 percent this year and are expected to exceed 200,000 next year, when the new Freelander -- to be called the LR2 in the U.S. -- goes on sale in North America, reports The Wall Street Journal. Ford spokeswoman Becky Sanch declined to comment on a potential Land Rover sale, saying that Ford's senior management is still evaluating all options.

Will Ford sell Jaquar and Land Rover?

Analysts of Ford Motor Co. are increasingly arriving at the conclusion that the sum of its parts -- its Volvo division, its credit bureau, Jaguar and other divisions -- may be worth more than the whole. There is no official word as to whether the company's restructuring will involve the sale or shuttering of any nameplates, but Ford did confirm that it had hired an expert acquisitions advisor to report on possible alliances and or assets sales.

NAACP Recognizes Ford With 'Top Honors'

- NAACP votes Ford as one of its highest performers on 2006 Economic Reciprocity Initiative Report Card

- Ford to serve as title sponsor of Youth Freedom Fund Dinner

- Baton to be passed to Detroit as the host city for the 2007 NAACP Convention - Ford to serve on host committee

For the second year in a row, Ford Motor Company was one of two automakers to earn top honors from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) on the organization's Economic Reciprocity Initiative (ERI) industry report card, which graded Ford and its global competitors in several key areas. Results of the study were released at the NAACP's 97th annual convention, "Voting Our Values, Valuing Our Votes," in Washington, D.C.

The NAACP ERI report card measures the exchange of economic costs and benefits between African-American consumers and various industries. Areas measured for performance included employment, advertising/marketing, procurement/vendor relationships, dealerships, and charitable/philanthropic activity.

"Ford is honored that the NAACP recognizes our commitment to diversity associated with our employees, customers, suppliers, dealers and philanthropic programs," said Sandra E. Ulsh, Ford Motor Company Fund president.

GM Leads Quality Survey Index Among New Owners

General Motors' vehicles captured five awards from new owners assessing the quality of their vehicles, according to a new survey published by Strategic Visions. The Chevy HHR won its small multi-function category, the Saturn Vue won small SUV, the Chevy Silverado won heavy duty pickup and the Corvette won two separate categories.

Toyota came in second with four wins, BMW and Honda three each; Chrysler Group had two. BMW repeated as the top scoring brand, the seventh time in eight years, and Volkswagen reemerged as the best full-line. Ford’s only win was significant, as its much-heralded Fusion took top honors in the medium car category.

Land Rover Navigation Does a Herculean Job

lrnav.jpg

Have you seen the Land Rover LR3 commercial where they claim it helped guide a plane from Nice to Corsica? To understand fully what they're implying, you may want to view the documentary at this page.

Essentially, a pilot sat in the driver's seat of the LR3 and spoke to the guys in the cockpit of a Hercules aircraft, using data from the SUV's nav system to get the aircraft to its destination. The LR3 beat the advice we heard one pilot give to another once, "when you see the first ocean, make a left."

Anyway, we're big fans of nav systems here at the Notebook, since we don't always pay attention to where we're going and from personal experience the Land Rover's is cherry.

Ford Turns to Workers to Sell Cars

While Ford has always given current and former employees discount coupons for family and friends to buy vehicles, they are now aggressively courting the option, turning to their 350,000 company members to help sell vehicles.

Ford President Mark Fields said that if each current or retired worker helped sell one vehicle that would add an additional 2% of market share to the company's fortunes.

Participants will get a tiered set of incentives and prizes for putting cars over the curb; Ford, Mercury, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo vehicles are eligible.

Land Rover Goes Beyond With Internet TV Channel

Land Rover's launched their very own I-TV channel, Go Beyond, that will be populated by sports, lifestyle, celeb and auto news. I've watched a couple videos on the site, and it's about the same level as waiting room or made-for-airplane fare. Not bad, not exactly thrilling and definitely of the canned variety.

But what we think is meaningless. People will watch -- check out Land Rover's Go Beyond channel here.

Roadside Assistance Programs on Foreign Cars

It’s the kind of feature that comes equipped with most new International vehicles that owners never want to use – and ironically, one the vast majority of consumers don’t even know comes standard with their purchase.

Just like an umbrella, roadside assistance is something you don’t need until the situation calls for it – and then you find you really need it. And life can be pretty miserable without it.

Luckily, many International nameplate brands provide some level of free roadside assistance during the initial warranty period of the vehicle, with some offering it as an upgrade to the basic plan.

Once the exclusive province of fee-for-membership clubs such as AAA, roadside assistance programs usually provide services such as free towing in case of a breakdown, flat tire changing and even a few gallons of gas in case you tried to push the needle past empty a little too far.

The specifics of each automakers programs differ; current owners should check their owner’s manual for details, prospective buyers can find information at the respective brands’ websites.

What follows is a thumbnail description of roadside assistance programs from several international nameplate manufacturers.

Current Incentives on Foreign Cars, Trucks and SUVs

Depending on a number of variables -- including time of year, prime rate and available inventory, all automakers provide a mix of cash rebates and financing programs to the consumer through their dealers. And while in many cases big signs announcing cash off are enticing, the reality is that low financing can actually make a new vehicle purchase more affordable in the long run than that splashy number.

Right now, international nameplate dealers are offering a variety of programs, sometimes cash, sometimes finance, and sometimes a mix of both, to consumers interested in getting into one of their vehicles. The following list is a summary of nationally available programs, though offers do vary from region to region, with financing deals especially dependent on the consumer’s credit history. As always, your best option is to visit your local International nameplate dealership to find out what they’re offering on the vehicle you’re most interested in.

Get a Certified Pre-Owned Land Rover with Cheap Financing

Land_Rover_CPO.jpg

You can get a used, 2005 Land Rover LR3 with financing as cheap as 3.9 interest, if you qualify, and are willing to do a 24-month deal.

The interest goes up after that -- 4.9% for a 48 month deal and 5.9% for a 60-month, but considering that you'll also be getting a Certified Pre-Owned LR3 from a dealer, with a warranty, it's worth checking out for those car buyers who refuse to bear the depreciation brunt for rolling a set of fresh wheels over the curb.

The deal applies to 2005 Freelanders and Range Rovers as well, and there's also a similar plan for earlier model year Discoveries, Freelanders and Range Rovers.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #125: Let the Salesman Speak!

Now this is a brainstorm -- Car Buyer's Notebook is now accepting video and audio clip entries from car sales professionals, in which they describe a vehicle they sell -- and try to convince our audience that it is a "must buy."

Clips MUST be between 30 and 45 seconds long, and in the case of video, should show the salesperson either in front of or sitting inside the vehicle.

In order to enter, clips must be e-mailed to us at editor@carbuyersnotebook.com, and they MUST come from a recognizable dealership address and also include the dealer's phone number.

That's it. We're specifically are excluding dealer principals and/or managers. We want to hear from the sales people. Our goal is to give our audience a different, fun kind of content, to get the retail side of the industry involved and also, to show new vehicle salespeople in a light they don't often get to present themselves in. We're excited about this!

Ford Switches Teams on Gay Advertising

Human_Rights_Campaign.jpgFollowing a meeting with national gay leaders, Ford has flopped on its "no gay" advertising stance, and will now advertise all eight of their brands in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender media outlets.

Originally, Ford said that Land Rover and Jaguar would stop advertising in gay-themed publications, but that Volvo would continue. While Ford denies the connection, in general the conclusion drawn in the media was that the company made the announcement as a direct result of pressure from a Christian group that had threatened a boycott against Ford vehicles.

In response to Ford's new position on gay advertising, The American Family Association, wihch has led the boycott movement, has issued a release threatening, "the option of a boycott is now very much alive." Ford's statement on their revised position can be found here.

Editor's note: After seeing the destructive effect of religious extremism in the Middle East, we think that Americans are ready to turn their back on so-called Christian groups advocating intolerance.

Range Rover Sport Takes British SUV of the Year Award

Ranger_Rover_Sport_2006.jpg

The 2006 Range Rover Sport has been crowned 'SUV of the Year' by BBC's Top Gear, and the editors were effusive in their praise Land Rover's first new vehicle since 1997.

Top Gear editor, Michael Harvey, said: "The Supercharged 390bhp Range Rover Sport is the only choice for Top Gear magazine's SUV of 2005. BMW and Porsche make world-beatingly-great sports cars, one or two of which look a bit like SUVs. Land Rover has only ever made great SUVs, one of which now goes a lot like a BMW or a Porsche."

Remarkable, even though the Ranger Rover Sport has only been on sale since May, it is the brand's best-selling vehicle on a monthly basis – outdoing even the new LR3! Personally, we think it's the new bling.

Jaguar, Land Rover to Stop Being "Too" Gay Friendly

ford_gay_ad.jpgTwo Ford brands, Jaguar and Land Rover, will stop advertising in gay-oriented publications, though the company denies the decision has anything to do with a threatened boycott from a Christian group. Volvo willl continue to run advertising in gay publications.

Ford is calling the move a business decision, and not a response to a boycott by the American Family Association, that was supposed to resume last week.

The AFA had announced the boycott in March, but called it off in June to open a dialogue with Ford, whose primary brands, Lincoln, Mercury and Ford, do not advertise in gay pubs in the United States.

Donald E. Wildmon, Chairman of AFA, said in a statement, “we are ending the boycott of Ford. While we still have a few differences with Ford, we feel that our concerns are being addressed in good faith and will continue to be addressed in the future.”

The Human Rights Campaign, a non-profit that works for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, is one of 19 orgnanizations that signed a statement that read in part, "we are deeply dismayed by reports in the media and otherwise that the Ford Motor Company has entered into a confidential agreement with the extremist American Family Association (AFA) that requires Ford to stop advertising in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media." The statement went on to ask Ford to disavow the alleged agreement and to reiterate its support for the LGBT community.

The problem for Ford, in our opinion, is that they are stuck between two powerful economic lobbies. Let's forget about right, wrong and/or cultural values for a minute. This is business.

While LGBT consumers are a proven economic power that are inclined to spend their money with companies that contribute to their community [see previous story], let's also remember that Ford is strong in so-called "red states" where groups such as the AFA hold considerable influence.

If this is indeed just a busines decision, it came down to -- who's more likely to buy our cars?

Hertz Rolls Out Line of Fun Rentals

Mustang_Frank.jpg

The Hertz rental car chain is introducing a “Fun Collection” of sporty cars, convertibles and SUVs in 18 cities, where, presumably, people go to have fun.

The “sun and ski” destinations include Miami, LA, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Denver, and Hertz says you can avoid that hideous, sinking feeling of getting screwed out of your desired ride through a guaranteed reservation plan.

The vehicles include the above pictured Mustang, but I won't be your driver. Other convertibles in the line include the Mazda Miata, Toyota Solara, PT Cruiser and Chrysler Sebring. Sporty coupes and roadsters include the hard-top Mustang, PT Cruiser, Chevy HHR and Nissan 350Z.

Plus, there's SUVs such as the Ford Escape XLT Sport, Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Murano and Hummer H3.All the vehicle in the fun line come with SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

Hertz has two other programs for finicky renters, the “Prestige Collection” and the “Brand and Model Reservability Program." Every brand and model in the Hertz Fun Collection is specifically reserved and guaranteed.

The Prestige Collection includes such vehicles as the Audi A6, Cadillac Escalade, Hummer H2, Infiniti QX56, Jaguar S type, Land Rover L3, Volvo S80. The Reservability program has 35 vehicles in the lineup, including the Mazda6, Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry, and Ford Explorer.

While you can register your reservations for the Fun Collection now [and we hope that's not unintentionally prophetic], you can't get the keys until the program officially begins January 5, 2006. Hertz is buying 8,000 vehicles for the new program, and they will be available in the following cities:

Orlando
Los Angeles
Las Vegas
Miami
San Diego
Ft. Lauderdale
Orange County
Tampa
Burbank
West Palm Beach
San Francisco
Ft. Myers
Oakland
San Jose
Honolulu [Oahu Airport]
Phoenix
Denver
Maui

The New Rush, or The New Bling?

Ranger_Rover_Sport.jpg

If you haven't seen a Range Rover Sport on the street, you may not fully agree with this assessment. But a colleague of mine was driving one, same color as above, and I'm convinced you'll start seeing the famous, infamous and no-right-to-be-famous driving them soon enough.

My call is that the Range Rover Sport is the new Blingmobile, SUV Division.

Matter of fact, after I saw the RRS, I was wondering where the marketing was -- surely Land Rover wanted to get the word out about this vehicle that is even outselling the new LR3 so far this year. It's fast-looking, with an aggresive posture that makes it look like some sort of off-road chase vehicle, more than a daily driver. Maybe Rover will cook a deal with someplace like Lake Tahoe, because that's the crowd for this baby.

Oh, so my point about marketing has been answered recently, with Land Rover pushing a new campaign, The New Rush, all over the Internet. And elsewhere I'm sure, but we don't own a TV and only use newspaper to fill shipping cartons.

There are two RRS's available, the HSE with a naturally aspirated, 4.4-litre, 300-hp V8, starts at $56,750. The Supercharged Range Rover Sport has a 4.2-litre, 390-hp supercharged V8 and starts at $69,750.

Land Rover Getting Diesels

Land_Rover_G4.jpg

Land Rover, the newly resurgent brand thanks to the LR3 and Ranger Rover Sport, is planing ahead by bringing diesel power into the U.S. by the end of the decade.

Not that their customers are worried about fuel economy. The typical Land Rover owner is forty-something, and often their luxury Ute is one of four or five vehicles in the gah-rahge.

But diesel makes sense for Land Rover, because the engines not only deliver better gas mileage, they also have more neck-snapping torque. In Europe 95% of Land Rover’s sales are diesel-powered vehicles.

The Land Rover LR3 has been the primary driver behind the company's dramatic sales turnaround in 2005 -- sales are up 23.8% for the year-to-date for the company. With the introduction of another new model, the Ranger Rover Sport, Land Rover is having a very happy time indeed.

Hands down, this car leads the category of rugged, luxe SUVs. Driving it makes you feel rich -- mostly due to the performance of the vehicle itself, but also thanks to the approving comments from the public.

And that public includes a training class of the U.S. Park Police, which conducted a DUI checkpoint the other night. As I pulled up to the cordon of cub scouts, I swear, they all looked like high school kids, several of them were saying "nice truck."

The Eagle Scout that approached me said something like, "Hi, I'm Ranger Huckleberry, have you been drinking tonight?" Since I couldn't get over how young he looked, I said, "Did you say you were a Major?" That befuddled him, but the comment wasn't lost on the senior man conducting the drill. He smiled, then turned to spit a wad of tobacco juice.

Maybe the LR3 was instilling a sense of entitlement in me. More likely, I felt like being a jerk. Checkpoints are a clear violation of the fourth amendment of the U.S. Constitution, though the courts have yet to support an argument to that effect.

But the LR3 was so luxurious, such a sheer source of pleasure, both in its rugged, though responsive driving performance and its many luxury touches, such as the lovely, perforated leather seats, wind screen for the sun roof and double glove boxes, that the violation of my constitutional right to immunity from unreasonable search and seizure did not last as long as the glare of the klieg lights in my rear view mirror.

The LR3 has a base price of $49,330, with the cold climate package, third row seat and tow packages, my LR3 listed for $54,245, with 4.4 liter V-8 and 19-inch wheels.
