2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download

fuel_econ_guide_08.jpgThe EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.

In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.

To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Top twenty best selling small cars for April 2008

Americans rediscovered cars in April 2008, with small cars in particular accounting for nearly one in five of all vehicles sold in an otherwise down month.

Toyota had four vehicles in the top twenty, General Motors had three; Nissan, Hyundai and Kia had two apiece. And Dodge has a hit with the Caliber, which made the list at number 9.

With people paying nearly $4 per gallon of gas nationwide, it appears that the free market has achieved what environmentalists have been clamoring about for years -- to conserve fuel by buying smaller vehicles.

Kia Announces January Sales Down 5%

IRVINE, Calif. -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced January sales of 21,355 units, down 5% from the same month last year. Leading the way for the brand were Rio, Optima, Spectra and Rondo, which all saw increases over the same period last year.

"It is a tough economic climate but fuel efficient vehicles like Rio and Spectra continue to sell well even as gas prices remain high," said Len Hunt, president and CEO of KMA. "We saw a good start in what is typically a slow month and in what is predicted to be a tough year in the auto industry."

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow

It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.

Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?

In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:

1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.

2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.

3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.

4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.

5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.

6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.

This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!

Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.

The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:

-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!

-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.

-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.

-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]

-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

New side tests of large luxury cars: luxury doesn't always buy safety

ARLINGTON, VA —Three of six large car models earn the top rating of good, but one is marginal in side impact crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Results show a range of performance in how well large cars are designed to protect people in serious side crashes.

Ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on a crash test in which a barrier designed to replicate the front end of a typical SUV or pickup truck strikes the tested vehicle in the side at 31 mph.

The best performers are the Acura RL, Kia Amanti, and Volvo S80, all 2007 models. The S80 also earns the Institute's 2007 Top Safety Pick award for superior overall crash protection. The S80 qualifies because it's rated good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and has electronic stability control as standard equipment.

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.

Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Kia SUV and Minivan Earn Highest Rating in Rear Impact Evaluations

28867-hi-sorento.jpg

IRVINE, Calif. — Today it was announced the Kia Sedona minivan and Sorento SUV both received "Good" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for rear impact collisions. A "Good" is the highest possible rating given by IIHS and according to the institute represents the best protection for people of all sizes in a typical rear-end crash.

"It is becoming well-known that Kia builds safety into all of its vehicles and Sedona and Sorento are just the latest examples to pass independent testing," said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of Kia Motors America (KMA). "We strive to provide our customers with quality vehicles that are equipped with the best available safety features."

IIHS bases their ratings of "Good," "Acceptable," "Marginal" or "Poor" on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that, according to the IIHS, when combined assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in an average rear crash. According to IIHS injuries to the neck are the most commonly reported by victims of car crashes; the Sedona and Sorento's standard active head restraints offer optimum and essential passenger neck and back support and protection.

Report: most cars still can't prevent whiplash

Rear crash protection in cars: seat/head restraints in two of every three models are marginal or poor

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback.

ARLINGTON, VA — Seat/head restraint designs in 22 current car models are rated good for rear crash protection, but those in 53 other cars are rated marginal or poor. The latest evaluations of occupant protection in rear-end collisions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the seat/head restraints in more than 60 percent of car models fall short of current state-of-the-art protection from neck injury or whiplash.

The ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in a typical rear-end collision.

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback. Seat/head restraints in 12 other car models are rated acceptable. These results show some improvement since the Institute began rear impact tests of seat/head restraints in 2004. Seats in only 8 car models earned good ratings in 2004.

Let's Get Small: Kia Latest To Face Scion

DETROIT -- Thanks to Toyota's success with Scion, more carmakers are thinking small. And square-ish.

Kia, for one is preparing what marketing chief Ian Beavis calls a "Scion fighter." It's named Soul and hits the market next year. Shown as a concept at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the car sports a boxy design similar to a Scion xB.

"Scion has created a segment, and there is more and more room in that for others," Beavis said. "We've been in there, with the Rio, then Nissan came in with the Versa and Honda with the Fit, and it has lifted everyone's boats."

Kia has been studying Toyota's Scion brand for three years, he added, "but [we] don't plan to emulate them." Nor does Ford, but last week the No. 2 automaker confirmed it will finally enter the sub-compact segment in the next couple of years. The move also was seen as a rare nod by Ford to a Japanese competitor.

"It's an important segment for any automaker, but Toyota has done a masterful job with Scion," said Barry Engle, general manager of marketing at Ford. Chrysler has signed on with Chinese automaker Chery to jointly produce a small car for the Dodge brand, filling a lack in Chrysler's portfolio.

Kia's Singing Sales Staff Ad Hits All the Right Notes

kia011507_vid.jpgBob Garfield's Ad Review

The Kia Motors America singing sales staff ad -- via David and Goliath, Los Angeles -- is noteworthy because it's an end-of-model-year-sale commercial that not only isn't torture, it's actually totally fun to watch. Repeatedly. Miraculously.

Oh, and it cost about $12. Oh, and it shows every vehicle in the product line. Oh, and it makes you do something you most likely never would have done in your life:

The premise is simple enough. The spot takes place entirely in a Kia showroom, where the sales staff is saying goodbye to the 2006 merchandise, presumably because it's on the way out forever. That's kind of funny in itself. They've grown attached to the Sedona, Sorento, Sportage, Spectra, Mucilage, Bandana, Pinko, Recto or whatever those things are called. They're choked up, like orphanage workers saying one last goodbye to little Dmitri or Su Lin.

Crossover Concept Focuses on Sporty Driving and Hints at Future Design Direction for Kia

Kia Motors America (KMA) today during a press conference unveiled the all-new Kia Kue crossover concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The press conference also served as the official public debut in North America for Peter Schreyer, new global design chief of Kia Motors Corporation (KMC).

"We've instilled confidence and integrity in our consumer base with vehicles that provide value, quality and safety," said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of KMA. "Kue embodies the next phase of our brand evolution, which will instill pride and passion in our customers through great design."

The Kia Kue employs a different approach to the crossover utility vehicle segment by taking elements of what makes a CUV to a new level, namely performance. Kue is designed first and foremost as a driver's vehicle. While possessing SUV characteristics and capabilities, the Kia Kue focuses more on giving the driver an exhilarating driving experience on the way to the home improvement center than on how much it can haul.

Kia Accessories Program Grows

Modified Rio, Spectra Vehicles Highlight Kia-Authorized Add-On Accessories

For the past three years Kia Motors America (KMA) has showcased exciting and enabling product at the Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) annual trade show. Kia's parts and accessories program received its first hefty push with the tuner market through heavily customized Spectra and Spectra5 vehicles displayed during the 2004 SEMA show.

Although heavily modified show cars are fun and exciting to look at, they do not translate well in everyday driving nor are they generally affordable. This year Kia has taken a decidedly different approach to customization by bringing to market a host of performance-oriented parts designed to allow enthusiasts to customize their vehicles while staying true to Kia's principles of delivering exciting and enabling product at a value price point.

Hyundai, Kia Gain Supply Company for Nearby Plants

The city of Opelika, Alabama has landed a company that will supply parts to the Hyundai and Kia auto assembly plants nearby. Daewon America LLC will invest $30 million in a 163,000 square-foot facility that will employ 170 people, reports The Montgomery Advertiser.

Daewon has been shipping its products, which include suspension bars and coils, from Korea to the Montgomery Hyundai plant, according to Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller. "With the new Kia plant coming, they felt the need to establish a facility here," he said. "I think that's what motivated them to justify the capital investment in Opelika." Construction of the new plant will begin before the end of the year, with expected completion by next summer.

The plant is expected to be completed in 2009, with an initial capacity target of 200,000 vehicles annually. Kia's year-to-date sales are up 2.6 percent so far in 2006.

Toyota Camry and RAV4 earn top ratings in front and side crash tests; Dodge Caliber improves over Neon

ARLINGTON, VA — New crash test results reflect the improvements manufacturers continue to make in protecting people in front and side crashes, but protection in rear crashes lags. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated four cars and two small SUVs, updating results for vehicle groups the Institute tested earlier.

The vehicles tested include the 2007 Dodge Caliber (small car); 2006 Kia Optima and 2007 Toyota Camry (midsize moderately priced cars); 2006 Lincoln Zephyr (midsize luxury car); and 2006 Hyundai Tucson and 2006 Toyota RAV4 (small SUVs). Front, side, and rear evaluations were conducted for all except the Optima, which was not tested for protection in side impacts. Kia is changing this car to improve its side performance, and the Institute will test it later this year.

New Designer to Help Kia Conquer Identity Crisis

Kia Motors has launched full-scale efforts to differentiate itself from its mother company Hyundai Motor. The automaker said Monday that it will bring in globally recognized car designer Peter Schreyer as the chief design officer, a vice president-level post, as part of its efforts to develop unique designs, which are distinct from Hyundai models.

Schreyer will take charge of Kia’s design institutes in Korea, California in the U.S. and Frankfurt in Germany.

While working with Audi, an affiliate of Volkswagen, for eight years, Schreyer earned fame for his outstanding creative car designs including the first generation "TT" model. He designed the concept car “R-Roadster” after moving to Volkswagen in 2002.

User-friendly websites translate into increased showroom traffic for auto manufacturers, according to a new survey by J.D. Power and Associates.

The market-research firm's inaugural look at Canadian auto makers' Web presence concludes that the easier to navigate and more useful their websites are, the more likely would-be buyers will head into showrooms for a test drive.

By that measure, Korean auto makers Kia and Hyundai ought to be pretty busy.

They ranked Number 1 and Number 2 in the poll.

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Expect some Teutonic influence in the appearance of the next generation of Kia models.

That's the word out of Volkswagen headquarters today following the revelation that its advanced design boss, Peter Schreyer, has been lured to Kia to head up the Korean carmaker's worldwide design operations.

Schreyer rose to prominence during an eight-year stint at Audi in which he established a classic Bauhaus-inspired lineage that is now reflected across the Audi lineup. Reportedly, the impetus for his leaving Volkswagen was a long-running dispute with VW design boss Murat Gunak.

2006 Kia Rio/Rio5 Wins J.D. Power Sub-Compact Car Category

rio2006.jpg

IRVINE, Calif. - The 2006 Kia Rio/Rio5 ranked highest for initial quality in the sub-compact category in a tie according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Initial Quality Study SM (IQS). The annual report, released today, measures 217 vehicle attributes across eight categories, including the driving experience, engine and transmission, and a broad range of quality problem symptoms reported by vehicle owners.

“ Rio is a class-leading subcompact vehicle and an excellent example of Kia’s continued dedication to offering consumers an affordable vehicle without sacrificing quality,” said Len Hunt, executive vice president and COO of Kia Motors America. “We're extremely pleased that the automotive industry and consumers alike recognize Rio’s high level of excellence.”

In the study, the Kia Rio was honored as the highest-ranking model in a tie in the sub-compact segment at 137 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). The all-new 2006 Kia Sedona minivan also performed well in its first year of release, while the Kia Sportage compact SUV scored better than the industry average.

The all-new 2006 Rio sedan and Rio5 five-door are raising the bar in the entry level segment by offering class-leading horsepower and interior volume, and six standard airbags, including full-length side-curtain airbags. The Rio and Rio5’s longer wheelbase and increased width and height contribute to a best-in-class 92.2 cubic feet of passenger room and both body styles feature a long list of standard equipment.

Kia Sedona and Subaru Impreza Earn Top Safety Picks

Crash tests of small cars & minivans: 2 earn the Institute's Top Safety Pick award; 1st Institute test results for Prius hybrid

ARLINGTON, VA — The Kia Sedona and Subaru Impreza are the best performers in a group of minivans and small cars recently evaluated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Sedona is the first minivan to earn the Institute's Top Safety Pick award, and the Impreza is only the second small car design to earn this award. Both vehicles earn gold awards for good crashworthiness ratings.

The Institute also evaluated the Toyota Prius hybrid's front, side, and rear crashworthiness plus the side crashworthiness of three other vehicle designs — the Mini Cooper (small car) and Dodge Grand Caravan and Chevrolet Uplander (minivans). Results for these vehicles update the results for minivan and small car models that were released last year. Side tests of the Grand Caravan, Uplander, Mini Cooper, and Impreza were delayed at the request of the vehicle manufacturers, who were making changes to improve crashworthiness.

Sedona is top-rated minivan: Among the eight current minivan designs the Institute has rated, the Sedona is the only one that earns good ratings in all three Institute tests (this vehicle also will be sold as the 2007 Hyundai Entourage later this spring). The new Sedona's frontal crash test performance is an improvement compared with the previous model, which the Institute rated acceptable.

Kia Sedona Rated "Best Minivan We've Tested"

Sedona.jpg

The folks at Kia are plenty happy today. Not only is their new Sedona minivan selling gangbusters, it is the first minivan to receive top safety ratings in front, side and rear crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety [IIHS].

Adrian Lund, IIHS president said the Sedona is the "best minivan we've tested," and singled out its rear crash test performance as praiseworthy. The Sedona is the only minivan with active head restraints and comes with standard side airbags, considered a must for side impact protection.

Subaru's Impreza also received a top safety pick from the Institute, for good performance in all three tests, while the Toyota Prius was singled out for poor rear crash protection.

Kia has Georgia On its Mind for First U.S. Plant

Kia-Georgia.jpg

Kia will spend $1.2 billion to build its first ever manufacturing plant in the U.S., to be located in West Point, Georgia. The plant will build 300,000 vehicles at full capacity and employ about 2,500 workers.

Scheduled to begin production in 2009, the plant will be built on 2,200 acres. Kia sold 275,871 vehicles in 2005, so the investment obviously signal the company's confidence they will continue to grow sales in America.

Construction is currently underway on a Kia corporate campus in Irvine, Calif. that is expected to open in December 2006, and will include a 65,000 square-foot design center. In total, Kia Motors has invested more than $300 million in the United States over the last four years, including a state-of-the-art research and development center in Ann Arbor, Mich. and a custom-built vehicle proving grounds in Mojave, Calif.

Roadside Assistance Programs on Foreign Cars

It’s the kind of feature that comes equipped with most new International vehicles that owners never want to use – and ironically, one the vast majority of consumers don’t even know comes standard with their purchase.

Just like an umbrella, roadside assistance is something you don’t need until the situation calls for it – and then you find you really need it. And life can be pretty miserable without it.

Luckily, many International nameplate brands provide some level of free roadside assistance during the initial warranty period of the vehicle, with some offering it as an upgrade to the basic plan.

Once the exclusive province of fee-for-membership clubs such as AAA, roadside assistance programs usually provide services such as free towing in case of a breakdown, flat tire changing and even a few gallons of gas in case you tried to push the needle past empty a little too far.

The specifics of each automakers programs differ; current owners should check their owner’s manual for details, prospective buyers can find information at the respective brands’ websites.

What follows is a thumbnail description of roadside assistance programs from several international nameplate manufacturers.

Current Incentives on Foreign Cars, Trucks and SUVs

Depending on a number of variables -- including time of year, prime rate and available inventory, all automakers provide a mix of cash rebates and financing programs to the consumer through their dealers. And while in many cases big signs announcing cash off are enticing, the reality is that low financing can actually make a new vehicle purchase more affordable in the long run than that splashy number.

Right now, international nameplate dealers are offering a variety of programs, sometimes cash, sometimes finance, and sometimes a mix of both, to consumers interested in getting into one of their vehicles. The following list is a summary of nationally available programs, though offers do vary from region to region, with financing deals especially dependent on the consumer’s credit history. As always, your best option is to visit your local International nameplate dealership to find out what they’re offering on the vehicle you’re most interested in.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #125: Let the Salesman Speak!

Now this is a brainstorm -- Car Buyer's Notebook is now accepting video and audio clip entries from car sales professionals, in which they describe a vehicle they sell -- and try to convince our audience that it is a "must buy."

Clips MUST be between 30 and 45 seconds long, and in the case of video, should show the salesperson either in front of or sitting inside the vehicle.

In order to enter, clips must be e-mailed to us at editor@carbuyersnotebook.com, and they MUST come from a recognizable dealership address and also include the dealer's phone number.

That's it. We're specifically are excluding dealer principals and/or managers. We want to hear from the sales people. Our goal is to give our audience a different, fun kind of content, to get the retail side of the industry involved and also, to show new vehicle salespeople in a light they don't often get to present themselves in. We're excited about this!

Photo Gallery: L.A. Design Challenge Concept Vehicles

GMC_PAD.jpg

Ten automakers competed in the L.A. Design Challenge, a competition that encourages "free thinking" among car designers to explore the possible outside of "rigid production restrictions." So goes the marketing copy.

The premise is that each designer had to come up with an L.A.-themed adventure, and then imagine a vehicle to fulfill it. Pictured above is the GMC entry, known as PAD, "which offers an innovative look at an urban loft with mobility." In other words, a hip, high-tech RV.

The winning entry will be announced January 5, 2006 Design L.A. Conference, which is being held in conjunction with the L.A. Auto Show.

After the jump we've got pictures of all ten entries, with info about the designers and the ideas behind their creations.

Kia Looking to Expand in Middle America

Len_Hunt.jpgKia wants to double sales to over 560,000 units within the next five years and intends to target the country’s vast middle to accomplish its aims, according to Automotive News.

Newly installed COO Len Hunt said, "If you look at mid-America, places like Indiana, places that aren’t the image markets, this is where Kia can make huge advances.” Hunt also said the company was looking at the vast market of consumers with weak credit: "Sixty percent of Americans have credit issues, yet they’re not villains," he said.

Kia’s sales are up 4.6 percent increase over last year; Hunt joined Kia on Oct. 7 after serving as executive vice president of Volkswagen of America. Hunt said the company needs a “halo vehicle” to drive showroom traffic, though Kia does have six new or redesigned vehicles on tap for 2006.

Kia Sponsors Round-the-World Driver

Kia_Gerlach1.jpg

File this guy under "Really Cool Gig." Christer Gerlach, a Swedish adventure driver and journalist has arrived on our shores after completing half of a projected 14,900 mile drive around the world.

He stopped at Kia HQ in California to show off his ride, a stock Kia Sorento, that will take him across our asphalt via Route 66 to New York.

Kia_Gerlach.jpgGerlach will then continue on to Europe to finish his latest drive. Previously he's done similar treks that have earned him the distinction of being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the first person to drive round our big blue marble.

What makes this circumnavigation different is Gerlach drove across Siberia for the first time, thanks to the addition of a muddy highway across the wasteland.

To find out more about Gerlach, you can visit his site, but it is mostly in not-English. You can go to Kia's worldwide site, however, and click on the Expedition icon, lower mid-right, where you will be directed to a flash minisite of his adventure.

Test Driving the Kia Spectra

Kia_Spectra_SX.jpg

Goldilocks would drive a Kia Spectra. If the fabled character was looking for a four-door sedan to drive around the countryside, shop for porridge and even go for outings with Papa, Mama and Baby Bear, this is the car that's just right.

We had the Spectra SX for a week and were impressed at how well-equipped the car is, its roominess and versatility and the driving pleasure it delivered.

Kia_Spectra_SX_side.jpgA five speed manual is standard on the SX as well as the entry level EX model, and it helps you get the most out of the 138-horsepoweer engine. An added plus was that the gears were well spaced and the medium length shifter throws easily.

The SX has 16-inch wheels, versus the EX's 15-inchers, and we found the combination of steering, gearing and wheeling to be just right -- the car is a sure-footed sedan that drives smoothly under everyday conditions and has plenty of passing power.

Looking at the specs, the Spectra is considered a "compact" sedan, which puzzle me now that I'm writing this, because it never flet like a small car. This in itself is an endorsement to add the Spectra to your list of test drives because what matters is actual driving impression, not tech stuff on a page.

Kia_Spectra_SX_glassholder.jpgThe Spectra is well-thought out -- to give you an idea, my sunglasses actually fit in the overhead storage compartment, which I was able to close without crushing them. This may seem like a small detail, but about half the cars I apply this test to actually fail, because the compartment is too small to accommodate glasses that aren't flat.

And we also put it to the practical hauling test, as seen in this story on pass-through seating, which I think is sactually one of those mundane features that car buyers actually look for when making a purchase.

Spectra_Passthrough2.jpgPass-through is more of a "need" than a "want" but when it comes down to it, cars are first and foremost a practical tool for helping us live our lives.

Another reason to consider the Spectra is the extensive list of features it offers -- in tandem with its low, low sticker price which makes it a value alternative to cars such as the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

For 2006, the EX starts at $14,840, the SX, $16,140. For these prices you get six airbags [two front, four side curtains, front and rear], A/C, power windows and locks with keyless entry, AM/FM/CD stereo with six speakers, four-wheel independent suspension and more. The SX adds a sport tuned suspension, strut tower bar, rear spoiler, the larger tires with alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and more.
