Breaking Chrysler's Culture
With Chrysler LLC losing money and its market share plunging in the U.S., Chief Executive Robert Nardelli is tackling what he sees as the root cause of most of the auto maker's problems: its Old Detroit mind-set.
Now, Mr. Nardelli is trying to replace those old habits with some of the no-nonsense management principles that have fueled the success of General Electric Co., one of his former employers. On Wednesday, the top 300 executives at Chrysler are expected to turn off their BlackBerrys and begin three days of in-house management seminars aimed at putting customers first in all of Chrysler's operations.
Mr. Nardelli himself is scheduled to lead a session on the corporate culture of a customer-driven company. The event is the centerpiece of a broader, yearlong effort by Mr. Nardelli to overhaul attitudes at Chrysler. "The traditional way of running the company got us where we are now," Mr. Nardelli said in an interview last week. "So we're trying to break some of the old paradigms."

Cerberus Denies Selling Chrysler Stake
What we have here is a case of splitting communication hairs:
The Financial Times has reported that private equity firm Cerberus has sold a significant chunk of its Chrysler stake to a pool of about 90 investors. Chrysler denies the report, saying the firm hasn't sold any equity since the deal was closed.
Apparently both stories are accurate. What the FT is pointing out is that as Cerberus took over Chrysler, it distributed the investment among a number of its funds and investors, and Chrysler acknowledges this.
What's more important is what it means for the future of the company. With such a widely distributed investment pool, as the automaker continues to hemorrhage cash and needs increasingly more money to stay afloat, it will get harder to go back to the pool for more cash. It seems likely that some of the investors will begin to agitate to dump the dog, so to speak.

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download
The EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.
In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.
To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Will the Credit Crunch Sink Cerberus/Chrysler?
We've just witnessed the self-destruction of an 85 year-old investment bank that avoided bankruptcy only by putting itself on the discount rack for six cents on the dollar. The financial machinations of the latest round of geniuses has created a housing bubble that is throwing millions of Americans out of their homes, and has the current administration looking even more dumbfounded than usual. Which is saying a lot.
What does this mean for Cerberus, the current owner of Chrysler? For starters, we know that auto sales are down this year, due to the financial stress many individuals are experiencing, and this is never good for a struggling auto company.
But what if Cerberus loses too much money trying to fix Chrysler? There is no question they are the cut their losses kind of guys. And let's consider that Cerberus is run by the same kind of geniuses that are going belly up left and right -- all because they thought they had invented a scheme that circumvented the laws of gravity.
Our bet is that accelerating margin calls, and rapid devaluation of assets, could put Cerberus in a cash crunch that would compel them to sell Chrysler for pennies on the dollar. Maybe not six pennies on the dollar, but at a substantial loss -- if only to cover some of their other bets.
In that case, Chrysler and Dodge would disappear entirely, and our thinking is that the only brand worth saving would be Jeep. You know, because it's iconic. And we believe the Chinese would make a play for it, if only to get access to a ready-made product and en existing dealer network.
But let's say the xenophobic chorus blocks that play, then a company like Hyundai would come in and buy Jeep -- but only if they could kill 90% of the dealers off, because Hyundai only needs/wants a few hundred more to add to their base. And that would make sense, because the remaining 200 Jeep dealers would also get the Hyundai product line, keeping them alive.
In the end, we have no confidence in Cerberus making a long-term success out of Chrysler. They overpaid right before a financial meltdown, and are on record saying the car business is just another business. For them, patriotism is truly nothing but an act.
We'll close by circling back to the main point -- the credit crunch and possible recession will lead to Cerberus either selling Chrysler or killing it completely. Good luck getting that lifetime powertrain warranty honored.

Jim Press may have a thankless job
DETROIT — Of the big American car companies, Chrysler has a well-earned reputation for extravagant marketing stunts.
The debut of the new Dodge Ram at the Detroit auto show in January was typically over the top, as cowboys on horseback herded 120 head of cattle through the city to publicize the rugged appeal of the pickup.
Chrysler’s new vice chairman, James E. Press, gamely played his part in a western-style jacket. “If you think that our truck is all hat and no cattle, keep an eye on yonder horizon,” he said to an audience chewing on beef jerky branded with the Dodge logo.

Chrysler May Cut Number Of Models By Half, Axe Dealers
Chrysler may cut the number of models it sells by half as it also moves aggressively to slim down its dealer network, according to people briefed on the plans.
The Auburn Hills automaker has been working under its so-called Project Alpha to get more of its dealers to sell all three of its brands--Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep--under one roof. But Chrysler, purchased last year by private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, is replacing Alpha with Project Genesis to eliminate duplication in its product lineup and to be more aggressive about dealer consolidation.
A year ago, industry analyst and advisor Steve Girsky said that two-thirds of domestic-brand dealerships needed to go before the remaining stores would be as profitable as import-brand dealerships. Other experts say that eliminating as few as 20% of domestic-brand dealers would be sufficient, but that would still involve thousands of dealerships across the country.

Chrysler Reports January Sales Down 12%
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Chrysler LLC's total U.S. sales of 137,392 units were down 12 percent and total fleet sales were down 18 percent in January. This was due to a planned reduction of daily rental fleet vehicles that is in line with the Company's strategy. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.
The Company opened the new year with strong sales performance from the Dodge Avenger, Dodge Viper, Dodge Caliber and Dodge Charger, all contributing to a year-over-year sales increase of 42 percent (28,457 units) for Dodge brand car sales. This is compared with 20,020 units in January 2007.

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow
It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.
Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?
In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:
1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.
2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.
3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.
4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.
5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.
6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.
This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.
