Top Selling Minivans in the Unites States for May 2008

The minivan segment saw sales drop 16.6% in May, with Chrysler holding on to two of the top three spots, thanks in part to their gas rebate plan.

Of particular note was the 80% drop in Hyundai Entourage sales, that one can only hope was due to a supply problem -- point being, this is a bad time to be getting into the minivan business, as Volkswagen is about to find out.

Top Selling Crossovers in the United States for May 2008

With total SUV sales down 19.5% in May, not even the crossover segment was able to escape unscathed -- the smaller ute/station wagon category was also down 5%, as consumers decided they didn't even want mini-SUVs over more fuel efficient cars.

Besides the usual suspects a couple vehicles did well in consumers' quest for smaller wagons, including the Dodge Journey, Nissan Rogue and Subaru Forester. Also of note is that GM placed both the GMC Acadia and Saturn Vue in the top 15, which is good news for that new platform, and for the parent company that suffered a big blow for the month.

After the jump, the top 15 best selling crossovers for May 2008:

Hyundai Elantra Tops Toyota Corolla in Small Sedan Test

YONKERS, N.Y. -- After testing a group of compacts and subcompacts, Consumer Reports judged the Hyundai Elantra SE best with an "Excellent" overall road test score. But three other compact cars, Subaru Impreza, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus, also achieved "Very Good" ratings in a report on gas-saving sedans published in the July issue.

The Corolla achieved a very impressive 32 mpg overall in Consumer Reports' real-world fuel economy tests. That's among the best gas mileage CR has seen in a conventional gasoline-powered car with an automatic transmission. Only the smaller Honda Fit (32 mpg) and Toyota Yaris (33 mpg) subcompacts do as well or better.

GM's Jamie Hresko touts quality gains

by Jamie Hresko, GM Vice President, Quality

So, I’m watching the NFL draft a few weeks ago and it hits me. It occurred to me that there is a complete incongruity (thank you word-a-day calendar) between hope and reality.

Don’t get me wrong, hope is very important. Hope, however, is not active. It doesn’t drive results. Do you think any of the draftees just sat on the bench hoping to play … hoping to be spotted … hoping to be picked? Of course not. They worked hard. They had a plan. They actively pursued their goal of playing football well.

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download

fuel_econ_guide_08.jpgThe EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.

In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.

To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Top twenty best selling small cars for April 2008

Americans rediscovered cars in April 2008, with small cars in particular accounting for nearly one in five of all vehicles sold in an otherwise down month.

Toyota had four vehicles in the top twenty, General Motors had three; Nissan, Hyundai and Kia had two apiece. And Dodge has a hit with the Caliber, which made the list at number 9.

With people paying nearly $4 per gallon of gas nationwide, it appears that the free market has achieved what environmentalists have been clamoring about for years -- to conserve fuel by buying smaller vehicles.

The top twenty best selling small cars for April 2008:

Top ten best selling crossovers for April 2008

Overall, pickups and SUV sales were down 17.4% in April and are down 13.5% for the year to date. The one bright spot is the crossover and small wagon category, which was down 0.4% for the month but has edge up 1.9% for the year.

In general, crossover utility vehicles are built on car platforms, while traditional SUVs are built on truck frames. CUVs are smaller, lighter and get better gas mileage than big SUVs -- one way to think of them is that they are really modern station wagons, but shorter and with a higher profile.

This months list of the top ten selling crossovers features three vehicles from General Motors, and two each from Ford and Toyota. Also of note, the new Nissan Rogue made the list at number ten.

With Home Prices Dropping, Car Prices Are Sure to Follow

It's accepted wisdom now that overall auto sales will drop in 2008. This is seen as a function of the housing bust, during which as much as 20% of new car purchases were funded by residential real estate profit, home equity cashouts and the general euphoria in real estate related industries.

Now that home prices are dropping -- and will continue to do so until they fall in line with median income -- we believe the average new vehicle transaction price will drop as well. If houses can fall 10%-30% in value, why not cars?

In November we ran a story from Comerica Bank stating the average transaction price of a new vehicle was $29,024. Our projection is this number will fall below $25,000, perhaps in 2009 if not this year, for several reasons:

1. Less money to spend. The option of taking cash out of a home to finance a new purchase is gone. The psychology of spending "free money" to buy a luxe ride will give way to folks actually having to make the payment out of their own pocket. And with many people paying even more for housing due to adjustable rates, they will choose cheaper rides.

2. Gas prices. While $3 a gallon gas isn't as draconian as five bucks, it will have an effect over time. People are already choosing more efficient crossovers and smaller SUVs over the big buses, and V8s are going out of favor. Look for more people to choose V6s in cars and for four-cylinders to pick up in popularity.

3. Negative equity. A greater percentage of folks are upside down in their cars, and have been rolling their balances into new loan agreements. To catch up, their new purchases will have to be cheaper and it's going to take years to eat away at the balance.

4. New frugality. In a tough economy, the value of money becomes more dear. People will start thinking twice about how much money they spend. They will choose cheaper cars, perhaps with more options, but the luxe-marques are in for a rough ride.

5. New wage structures. The Detroit car companies have made big headlines with their new labor deals, that allow them to replace higher paid union workers with new hires at a lower wage scale. The higher wages translated into higher sticker prices; the lower wages will allow for slimmer price hikes and even reductions.

6. Battle for fewer consumers. Don't let the tough talk fool you. As fewer cars are sold throughout 2008, the rebate war will kick into full swing -- and spiffs will help bring down the average transaction price.

This last reason is why we launched Current Auto Rebates, a site that publishes all the rebates for every model in a single PDF file, to make bargain hunting that much easier.

Harness the power of free price quotes!

Many of you have seen the link to get a free dealer price quote on our pages, as well as in our Current Auto Rebates report.

The free price quote is one of the best tools for savvy vehicle shoppers -- it's convenient, and there is absolutely no obligation to buy anything. Here are some of the other advantages:

-- You are essentially putting a bid out to local new vehicle dealers to compete for your business. In many cases, several dealers will respond to your price quote request. Armed with your knowledge of MSRP and rebates, you can then have dealers compete on price for your car buying dollars!

-- You can fill out a free price quote for each vehicle you are cross-shopping.

-- Schedule your test drive appointments. Just think, you know longer have to suffer the indignity of walking into a dealership and either being ignored or descended upon like a piece of fresh meat.

-- The dealership will have the vehicle you are interested in ready and waiting [if they are pros, which many are nowadays, given the competition of the Internet.]

-- You will be doing 90% of the work that goes into buying a new vehicle from the convenience of your own computer -- how civilized is that!

Hyundai May Pull Super Bowl Ads

DETROIT -- Hyundai Motor America is considering withdrawing as a Super Bowl advertiser, according to a report in Automotive News.

The automaker blames a worsening economy, said Chris Hosford, a Hyundai spokesman.

"We are reviewing whether or not we want to advertise on the Super Bowl," Mr. Hosford told Automotive News. "A lot of economic indicators clearly show the economy is slowing," Mr. Hosford said. "Is this the best thing to do with our advertising funds in the first quarter?"

In October, Hyundai said it would advertise during the Super Bowl for the first time with two 30-second commercials.

Hyundai Hopes Genesis Leads to Luxe-Berth

Hyundai is boldly jumping into the market for $30,000-plus sedans--a crowded field where quality is a given and image matters much more to both buyer and seller. Its new seda--called Genesis--was launched in South Korea yesterday and will hit the U.S. in June.

Hyundai will tout that Genesis' performance is comparable to German luxury brands and that its price is lower. While final pricing hasn't been set, Hyundai expects the Genesis to start in the low-$30,000 range, compared with the low-$40,000 for BMW AG's 3-series sedan.

Hyundai backs off million sales goal

LOS ANGELES — A funny thing happened to Hyundai on the way to selling 1 million units a year in the United States. The feisty Korean carmaker hit a brick wall.

The grand plan to get to a million by 2010? No chance. Now Hyundai's overreaching bosses in Seoul have gone from pushy to panicky.

Korea's reshuffling of managers at Hyundai Motor America is getting monotonous. The revolving door has led to a chaotic strategy that has dealers dazed and confused.

"It will be very hard to get a person to come work with them," said Bill Underriner, president of Underriner Motors of Billings, Mont. "The team is always changing."

This year's sales goal is 512,000, slashed from 555,000. But dealers are behind last year's pace, when full-year sales were 455,520. That's a long way from a million.

'Buy American' Desire Drives Many New Shoppers to Purchase Domestic Rather Than Import Nameplates

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Despite the fact that import vehicles make up nearly 49 percent of the U.S. auto market, the country of origin still plays a crucial role in consumer choice of which make and model to purchase, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2007 Escaped Shopper Study released today. The study provides a comprehensive evaluation of why consumers may consider one model, but ultimately purchase another.

Nearly 80 percent of new-vehicle buyers limit their consideration set to include only domestic models or only import models. Among those who cross-shop for both import and domestic models, consumers who ultimately buy a domestic frequently do so because they simply decide they do not want an import. Buyers of domestic new-vehicles also frequently decide against import brands for financial reasons, most often citing that the import didn't offer aggressive rebates or other incentives.

Hyundai chairman gets lenient sentence in Korea

SEOUL -- An appeals court's suspension of a prison sentence for the chairman of Hyundai Motor Co. -- citing his value to the South Korean economy -- cast fresh doubt on the willingness of the country's courts to crack down on corruption.

The nation's judges have a long record of lenient sentencing for leaders of major companies who commit white-collar crimes. That pattern seemed to be changing earlier this year when Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo was sentenced to three years in prison after a court found him guilty of creating a $110 million political slush fund with money skimmed from the company and its affiliates.
[Chung Mong Koo]

Yesterday, judges in the Seoul High Court, an appeals court, upheld the conviction but suspended the prison term for five years, meaning he likely won't spend any time in detention beyond the two months he was in jail right after his arrest last year. The move effectively puts Mr. Chung on probation for five years.

"From a rule-of-law perspective, most people will view this as a disappointment, given the size of the embezzlement," said Kim Joong-ki, a law professor at Yonsei University in Seoul. "It sends a very conflicting message on the courts' determination to crack down on white-collar crime."

A spokesman for the prosecutors' office said it hasn't decided whether to appeal the sentencing decision to the Supreme Court. Such appeals are rare, as the nation's highest criminal appeals court focuses on questions of guilt and innocence rather than sentencing.

The ruling is a legal and public-relations victory for Hyundai Motor, which campaigned strongly in recent months to persuade the Korean public that Mr. Chung plays an irreplaceable role in the company and country's economy.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

"We know how to launch vehicles, but there will be some unique dealership stuff coming for that car," said Miles Johnson, a Hyundai Motor America spokesman. "This will be different from selling Elantras and Accents, and that is what we are sorting out."

Johnson said Hyundai is developing the launch strategy. One requirement, he said, will be intensive training for at least one salesperson per dealership.

Genesis is the leading name for the new model. It is being touted as a premium sedan for driving enthusiasts but without the premium price. Hyundai says the car was benchmarked for torsional stiffness against a BMW 5 series. [Link - sub req'd.]

Reuters Ties News Into 'Smart Thinking' Campaign For Hyundai

REUTERS TODAY LAUNCHED A "VIRTUAL brand channel" for Hyundai Motor America, allowing the automaker's branding for its "Smart" campaign to appear online adjacent to relevant "Smart thinking" stories on Reuters.com in any topic.

In a somewhat unusual relationship, Reuters editors worked with company engineers to devise an algorithm that would trigger "smart thinking" stories based on keywords and attributes identified by Hyundai and its agency Carat Fusion/Los Angeles.

These stories range from topics on alternative fuel technology to innovative Hollywood movie launches to the latest smart cell phones. But the brush is broad enough to incorporate politics and other areas from the 30,000-or so stories Reuters publishes daily. No competitive brand screening is being done, and Reuters will continue to monitor the feed to see if the stories meet the definition, according to a Reuters spokesperson.

The campaign focuses on the launch of the Veracruz crossover SUV and will promote other Hyundai models as well. The target audience is early adopters, intellectuals and cultured professionals.

"We approached Reuters because of their demographic and they came back with the idea," said Jackie Watanabe, media supervisor for Carat Fusion/L.A.

Report: most cars still can't prevent whiplash

Rear crash protection in cars: seat/head restraints in two of every three models are marginal or poor

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback.

ARLINGTON, VA — Seat/head restraint designs in 22 current car models are rated good for rear crash protection, but those in 53 other cars are rated marginal or poor. The latest evaluations of occupant protection in rear-end collisions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that the seat/head restraints in more than 60 percent of car models fall short of current state-of-the-art protection from neck injury or whiplash.

The ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how well people of different sizes would be protected in a typical rear-end collision.

Among the winners are seat designs in all Volvos; Audi A4, S4 and A6; Ford Five Hundred/ Mercury Montego; Nissan Sentra and Versa; Saab 9-3; and Subaru Impreza and Legacy/Outback. Seat/head restraints in 12 other car models are rated acceptable. These results show some improvement since the Institute began rear impact tests of seat/head restraints in 2004. Seats in only 8 car models earned good ratings in 2004.

NEW YORK -- Newly redesigned, the Hyundai Santa Fe Limited earned a "Very Good" overall rating -- surpassed only by the V6-powered Toyota RAV4 Limited -- in tests for the May issue of Consumer Reports.

The Santa Fe ranks second overall among some 20 small SUVs recently tested by Consumer Reports, including the highly rated Subaru Forester and Honda CR- V.

"The Santa Fe is quiet, comfortable riding, and it's refined," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports Auto Test Center in East Haddam, Connecticut. "It has a versatile interior, yet its exterior dimensions are modest."

Hyundai luxury ready to roll

NEW YORK -- South Korean auto maker Hyundai will unveil a large V8-powered luxury car at the New York Auto Show in early April. While the Genesis is officially a concept car, a production version will go on sale in the U.S. early next year, the company said.

"When it arrives in 2008, it will catapult Hyundai into competition against some potent rivals, and Genesis is up for the challenge," Hyundai Motor America chief operating officer Steve Wilhite said in an announcement.

The car's size and power put it in competition with cars from BMW, Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz.

Hyundai has, for many years, sold large rear-wheel-drive sedans in its home market of South Korea. The production version of the Genesis concept will be sold in South Korea and other markets as well as in the U.S.

The Genesis concept will be powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine capable of producing "well over 300 horsepower," the company said. Power will go to the car's rear wheels through a six-speed manually shiftable automatic transmission.

Hyundai's inventory increasing in U.S.

SEOUL: Hyundai Motor said Monday that the number of its unsold vehicles in the United States had increased after it cut sales to fleet operators.

The company has reduced sales to rental fleets since September, Jang said, to protect prices on new cars from downward pressure when fleet vehicles are sold as used cars.

"We expect inventory of 98,000 units as of the end of February, or about one month's extra," the company said in an e-mail, following a newspaper report that inventory of just Sonata sedans would rise to 120,000 cars.

The company's inventory is also rising due to competition from Japanese automakers including Toyota Motor. Last month, Hyundai Motor reported fourth-quarter profit fell 22 percent.

Test Driving the 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe -- Wow, Wow and Wow

07sfe.jpg

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a must drive in the mid-size SUV category. Period.

That's if you're looking an attractive, nice performing, high quality SUV for a fraction of the cost that other manufacturers are selling similar vehicles for.

When you get in the Hyundai Santa Fe, at least as a car reviewer, it takes a couple days to get over the wow factor. As in, “wow, you get all this for $22,000,” and “wow, you get this?,” and “wow, you get this, too.”

It's a good driving, good looking, good value car all around – it's just continually surprising, especially for the price. For example, I recently drive a high end SUV that cost $45,000 – meaning you could buy two Hyundais for the same money, but you're not getting half the car, but much more with the Hyundai Santa Fe GLS.

Hyundai sales drop 8% in January 2007

Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 27,721 units for the month of January. Sales were down 8 percent from Hyundai's record January sales in 2006. The all-new 2007 Santa Fe and Accent showed strong gains over the previous year, posting 89 percent and 80 percent increases respectively.

"We are disappointed with the results for January sales, especially given the continued quality improvements in our products. We experienced lower than anticipated sales in our California region and our South Central region sales were depressed due to difficult weather," said Chief Operating Officer Steve Wilhite. "We are confident that our plan going forward is sound and will gain traction through the balance of the first quarter."

Hyundai Motor America COO Steve Wilhite says many of the problems auto dealers face today are the fault of automakers. "Instead of tackling individual performance problems through counseling or intelligent market representation action, we compound them.

Steve Wilhite, COO of Hyundai Motor America, announced yesterday that the South Korean automaker will seek to help its U.S. dealers generate a 2.5 percent return on sales by 2008.

That goal will provide a healthy boost to Hyundai's dealer profitability, now averaging 1.4 percent, just slightly below the national average of 1.6 percent. Hyundai's exclusive dealers, who make up just over half of its total dealers in the U.S., average a 1.9 percent return on sales.

By the end of 2007, Hyundai expects to raise its number of U.S. dealerships from 752 to somewhere between 780 and 800. By 2012, according to the Detroit News, Hyundai aims to increase its number of retail sales per outlet from 550 on average, to 800.

South Korea demands 6 years in jail for Hyundai chief

South Korean prosecutors today demanded a six-year jail term for the chairman of Hyundai Motor group for alleged breach of trust and embezzling company funds. The prosecution request came as unionized workers at South Korea's top automaker prepared further partial strike action over a bonus dispute, which is expected to put pressure on the company's goal to more than double global revenue growth in 2007.

Veracruz Unites Space, Powerful Performance, Interior Elegance and Safety Satisfying the Most Demanding Customer

The new Veracruz midsize crossover made its North American debut today at the 2007 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). Just as the Hyundai Azera is altering perceptions about premium sedans, Veracruz breaks new ground in premium crossovers. Hyundai has once again made luxury and performance attainable in previously unthinkable ways: with standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), upscale amenities and more cargo volume than the full-size Mercedes-Benz GL, Veracruz uniquely blends substance with style.

Veracruz takes on the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander and beats them in terms of powertrain performance and standard safety features while adding sophisticated design, high-quality craftsmanship and seating for seven adults.

"Veracruz is an exceptional vehicle at the right time for this developing segment," said Steve Wilhite, chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor America. "The vehicle's designers recognized that the needs and desires of traditional SUV buyers weren't being met and focused on meeting those needs in an elegant and ingenious way. The result is a spacious crossover that delivers both refined style and first-rate performance."
