Volvo's accident research team compiles know-how that saves lives

Know-how saves lives -- The Volvo Cars accident research team has therefore investigated more than 36,000 accidents over a period covering 35 years. Recently, Volvo Cars has also developed a research model and methodology for predicting the chain of events before and during a collision. The method helps to evaluate the effectiveness of new preventive safety systems such as Collision Warning with Auto Brake and City Safety.
The method is an extension of the traditional traffic accident research which has focused on the actual collision and its consequences. Volvo Cars has now extended the research and made it possible to go back in time from the crash and study the chain of events that led to the accident.

Vehicle's Air and Cabin Filters Offer Critical Protection from Soot, Smoke
BETHESDA, Md. -- The soot and smoke from wildfires can be a serious concern for both vehicles and passengers, unless the air filters and cabin filters are in optimum working condition. The Car Care Council suggests that these filters be checked to ensure they provide maximum protection during this difficult time.
The vehicle's air filter traps dirt particles, including soot, which can cause damage to engine cylinders, cylinder walls, pistons, piston rings and bearings. The air filter also plays a critical role in keeping smoke and soot from contaminating the airflow sensor on fuel-injected cars.

Last spring, Trissential organized a business continuity specialty area to offer businesses expertise in surviving catastrophic occurrences. New crash tests: some midsize SUVs perform worse than many cars in side tests
ARLINGTON, VA — Results of crash tests for six SUVs show frontal crash protection has improved. However, the tests reveal significant differences in how well SUVs protect people in serious side crashes.
Among the worst performers in the side test are the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevrolet TrailBlazer, even though both are equipped with standard side airbags. The front and side tests recently were conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to evaluate how well midsize SUVs protect people in the two most common kinds of serious crashes. Rear crash protection ratings for these models were released earlier this year.

New side tests of large luxury cars: luxury doesn't always buy safety
ARLINGTON, VA —Three of six large car models earn the top rating of good, but one is marginal in side impact crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Results show a range of performance in how well large cars are designed to protect people in serious side crashes.
Ratings of good, acceptable, marginal, or poor are based on a crash test in which a barrier designed to replicate the front end of a typical SUV or pickup truck strikes the tested vehicle in the side at 31 mph.
The best performers are the Acura RL, Kia Amanti, and Volvo S80, all 2007 models. The S80 also earns the Institute's 2007 Top Safety Pick award for superior overall crash protection. The S80 qualifies because it's rated good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and has electronic stability control as standard equipment.

Bumpers on luxury cars aren't luxurious: worst is Infiniti G35
4 of 11 cars sustain more than $10,000 damage in 4 minor bumps
ARLINGTON, VA — Bumpers, even those on expensive cars, don't resist damage in low-speed impacts. The Infiniti G35, the worst performer, sustained almost $14,000 damage in a series of 4 tests conducted at 3 and 6 mph by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Saab 9-3 was the best, sustaining $5,243 damage. Only 3 cars sustained less than $6,000 damage, while 4 would cost more than $10,000 to fix.
"The Infiniti was a disaster, and even the Saab sustained way too much damage in these low-speed impacts," says Institute senior vice president Joe Nolan. "There shouldn't be much or any damage in collisions at these speeds, especially to expensive and presumably well-made cars."

Popularity of high-performance motorcycles helps push rider deaths to near-record high
ARLINGTON, VA — Supersports have the highest death rates and worst overall insurance losses among all types of motorcycles, new analyses by the Institute and Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) reveal. Motorcyclists who ride supersports have driver death rates per 10,000 registered motorcycles nearly 4 times higher than rates for motorcyclists who ride all other types of bikes.
Supersports are built on racing platforms but modified for the highway and sold to consumers. They’re especially popular with riders younger than 30. With their light weight and powerful engines, supersports are all about speed. They typically have more horsepower per pound than other bikes. A 2006 model Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R, for example, produces 111 horsepower and weighs 404 pounds. In contrast, the 2006 model Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, a touring motorcycle, produces 65 horsepower and weighs 788 pounds.

Some SUVs perform poorly in side crashes
WASHINGTON - Some sport utility vehicles don’t provide the protection in a side crash that one might expect from such large vehicles, according to tests released Thursday by the insurance industry.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave marginal scores in side-impact tests of 2008 versions of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee and two SUVs built by Nissan Motor Co. — the Pathfinder and Xterra without optional side air bags.
In similar side testing, the Toyota 4Runner and Pathfinder and Xterra models equipped with side air bags received top marks of good in the side testing. The Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer received the second-highest rating of acceptable.

Buckle up! The safest cars for families
Driving safe doesn't have to mean being bound to some grocery-getter mom-mobile.
Honda Pilot owners might attest to that. The Pilot has the silhouette of a traditional truck-based sport utility vehicle, yet it has safety and handling attributes that are much more in line with a minivan or tall wagon. It's also one of the most manageably sized vehicles, with a third row of seating. What's more, side-curtain airbags are standard and cover all three rows.
The Pilot is one of a handful of 2008 models that meet demand for striking yet secure drives. Last year a Consumer Reports survey found that 12 percent of new-car shoppers ranked safety their top consideration. That's enough of a critical mass to bring plenty of safe choices — as demonstrated by our varied list, ranging from economical to lavish, staid to sporty.

'Opt-Out' Option for Helmet Law Opposed by AAA Michigan
$100 fee makes it OK to go without helmet?

For a $100 fee, motorcyclists would have the chance to buy their way out of a helmet.
American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE) conceived the bill, which would require riders to be 21 years or older, licensed to operate a motorcycle for at least two years, complete a motorcycle safety course and have insurance or security of $20,000 for first-party medical benefits in the event of an accident.

Teen Driver Safety Week
Guest editorial by AAA and the Minnesota Safety Council
BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Congress has designated the week of October 15 as Teen Driver Safety Week. It’s a welcome focus on a vulnerable group of drivers who are at high risk on our roads.
America’s teens are dying in disproportionate numbers on our roadways. Hardly a week goes by without a horrific crash involving teens leading off the evening news or in the local sections of our newspapers. Teens represent 7 percent of drivers but are involved in 13 percent of all fatal crashes because they often are not prepared for the very real and potentially deadly risks they face on the roadway.

"Bracketless blades, such as the Bosch ICON, have completely done away with the conventional wiper blade's external steel or plastic brackets, multiple joints and pressure points," said Otto Stefaner, Senior Product Manager for Bosch, the world's largest supplier of automotive parts to vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket.
