Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!
Aren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?
I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.
Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]
In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.
Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:
1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.
2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.
And you will be in automotive widget heaven!

Is the New Dodge Ad Offensive to Assholes? -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #169

Yesterday we wrote about the non-controversy over whether the Dodge Caliber fairy ad was offensive to homosexuals.
Then last night we saw the sick puppy ad, and have to ask ourselves -- is this offensive to assholes?
We know we're insulted.

Niche Car and New Model Analysis -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #164

Teaching Titenda to Drive -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #163
In this podcast we talk about our experience with teaching a young person to drive. It was cool to help someone out, but as the saying goes we learned more than the person being taught -- chiefly that driving is extraordinarily complicated!
The other thing is an old piece of wisdom -- that the closer you are to a person the less of a good idea it is that you teach them how to drive.

Check Out A Cabin in the Woods – A Podnovel by Frank Giovinazzi -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #158
We interrupt the normal programming for this website to introduce our new audio novel, A Cabin in the Woods. We're calling this project a podnovel because we've set up a new channel to publish the weekly installments of the story, a fantasy/horror novel set in the woods.
The main character, Roger Cooke, is a college student who moves to a cabin in the woods to write the Great American Novel, but things take a turn for the weird in a hurry. One of the really cool things about this book is the structure – set up like the Thousand and One Arabian Nights, it goes back and forth between the narrator and the tales, creating its own special world, if you will.
You can listen to this off-topic podcast by clicking here, or you can listen to the introduction to the novel here.
The first chapter of the book is already posted, you can listen to it here; if you're totally into audio books in the Stephen King/Twilight Zone vein, you can put this RSS string into your podcatching software to get the regular downloads: http://acabininthewoods.libsyn.com/rss
If you'd like to check out the text entries for A Cabin in the Woods, you have two choices, at http://www.FrankGiovinazzi.com/a_cabin_in_the_woods/, or www.ACabinIntheWoods.libsyn.com.

Ten of the Biggest Underreported Automotive Sales Stories of the Year – Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #157
With sales reports out in a couple days, I thought today would be a good time to put out a story that highlights what everyone else is overlooking. Folks, get ready for some real automotive journalism!
Here's a preview of today's podcast:
Ten Underreported Automotive Sales Stories
1. Toyota is ready to become the #3 best selling car company in America. They've been beating Chrysler for a couple months, 3 brands versus 3 brands, but Chrysler has been adding their Mercedes numbers to avoid the embarrassment.
2. Nissan's sales have been down 4 months in a row. They may not hit a million, unless pride gets in the way of profit.
3. BMW is the second best selling luxury brand in America. Beemer was behind Lexus in January by only 384 units, or 2%.
4. The Chevy Cobalt is a hit. Sales were up 140% in January.
5. Audi is coming on. Sales were up 19.8% in January, and they could be looking at a 100,000 units in 2007.
6. Pontiac is surging. Sales of the G6 were up 273.6% in January, Pontiac as a whole was up 55.3%, and the SOLSTICE BEAT THE MIATA.
7. The Honda Ridgeline still isn't selling. Only 3,814 units in January, despite winning awards and a generous lease. And the Hummer H3 sold 3,777 units but gets no press!
8. The Range Rover Sport is Land Rover's best-selling vehicle.
9. The PT Cruiser is the best-selling crossover/wagon in America.
10. Toyota's hybrid SUVs are failing in the marketplace.

Scizophrenic Consumers -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #144
Let's have a little sympathy for the car companies -- whether or not it makes sense, they have to give consumers what they want -- or what they think they want.
The best example of this is third row seats, particularly in small to midsize SUVs and crossovers. It's impossible to get in most third row seats in these vehicles, and they are generally of poor construction quality.
But what's a car company to do? Say they're stupid? No, that's for us to say!

Cash is King -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #133
A few readers have written complaining that while they were able to get good deals on new vehicle prices, they had to walk away from the transaction because they got walloped with high dealer finance rates.
This is a good reminder that when you go into a dealership to buy a new vehicle, there are two transactions at play -- buying the vehicle itself and "buying" the financing.
Even though you can't see or drive the money, you are paying for it just as much as you are for the metal. So it's recommended that you always try to get outside financing, either from a bank or credit union, before you go into a dealership.
This allows you to negotiate as a "cash" customer, because alll you're doing is buying the car. The bank is paying for it, and you in turn, make the payments to the bank.

Howard Stern Countdown -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #130

The King of All Media returns to the airwaves officially on January 9, but we have a clip from his very first words uttered over the satellite airwaves.
In case you weren't aware, Howard Stern left his traditional radio perch, where he had 10 million subscribers, to bolt to Sirius radio, where at best he'll have 3 million. Is this a new frontier for him to conquer [as they're spinning it] or a swan song into oblivion?
If you're interested in taking a virtual tour of his studios, check out this link, here is the link to the main Stern page on Sirius.

Can You Get Your Deposit Refunded? -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #129
A reader wrote us, asking about getting their deposit refunded, and while we're not lawyers, we would like to pass on some links and research to you. Did we mention we're not lawyers? And that this isn't legal advice?
Anyway, most of the websites we visited for states' Attorneys General say consumers are not entitled to either cancel a signed contract, OR to get their deposit refunded. This comes with the caveat in some states such as New York, however, that if the dealer is helping you get financing, you can cancel the deal before you sign the finance agreement and get a full refund of your deposit.
In the case of the reader that wrote to us, it appears as if they are entitled to a refund of their deposit, but then again, we're not lawyers.
What this comes down to is two things -- first, read what you're signing and don't take anyone's verbal assurance. Second, check the laws in your state. Vermont, for instance, lets you cancel deals made over the phone, and New York also allows you a refund on a lease deposit before you've signed the paperwork.

Using the Internet to Buy a Vehicle -- Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #128
This is really cool -- a Car Buyer's Notebook reader called last night and asked for some help using the Internet to get price quotes to buy a new vehicle. "Barb" is like a lot of new vehicle buyers -- they want a car, they're ready to buy yet don't want to walk into a dealership cold. Click here to listen to this great podcast.
So we spent about an hour on the phone with her, walking her through filling out the Free Vehicle Price Quote form here at CBN, as well as building a vehicle, in this case a Subaru Outback, for her at the manufacturer's site, and then doing the same thing at a dealer's site.
This way, we feel she's going to get a bunch of responses, and the number one thing for consumers using the Internet to remember is that the balance of power has dramatically shifted in the new vehicle market.
Barb is also like a lot of buyers in that she is looking for a "good deal' but also wants to be treated professionally and get good service -- and often, consumers will opt to spend a few bucks more to go with a retailer where they feel their business is appreciated, so it's not 100% about price.
We were surprised some actually took us up on our offer to call and/or write for help on this, and we'd like to repeat the offer here. If you have any questions about using the Price Quote tool here at Car Buyer's Notebook, give us a call at 703-236-1846, or email us here.

In this podcast we compare the NYC Transit Strike to the United Auto Worker situation, as the latter faces massive job and wage cuts.
Unfortunately, not only is public sentiment at odds with the historic rhetoric of unions, the global wage and price structure has changed so drastically as to make the situation a final turning point for unionized labor.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #125: Let the Salesman Speak!
Now this is a brainstorm -- Car Buyer's Notebook is now accepting video and audio clip entries from car sales professionals, in which they describe a vehicle they sell -- and try to convince our audience that it is a "must buy."
Clips MUST be between 30 and 45 seconds long, and in the case of video, should show the salesperson either in front of or sitting inside the vehicle.
In order to enter, clips must be e-mailed to us at editor@carbuyersnotebook.com, and they MUST come from a recognizable dealership address and also include the dealer's phone number.
That's it. We're specifically are excluding dealer principals and/or managers. We want to hear from the sales people. Our goal is to give our audience a different, fun kind of content, to get the retail side of the industry involved and also, to show new vehicle salespeople in a light they don't often get to present themselves in. We're excited about this!

Not only can you research any and all vehicles you may be interested in from the no-pressure environment of your computer, you can also get a free, no-obligation price quote onthe vehicle[s] of your choice, simply by using this form, which takes less than 2 minutes to complete.
Here's the way it works: by clicking on the icon above right, then filling out the form with your vehicle interest and contact info, the details are sent to new car dealers in your area. Nowadays, all car dealers have "Internet departments" whose job it is to respond to these "leads" and earn your business.

We strongly recommed new vehicle buyers utilize all the tools at their disposal, and we are proud to be working with the biggest and most trusted provider of vehicle price quotes in the industry. If you have any questions about how this tool works -- or even any hesitation -- please feel free to contact us via e-mail.
We feel so strongly about both the tool and the service, that for the first time we're publishing our direct telephone number: 703-236-1846. If we can help you in any way, feel free to call [during reasonable hours, of course!]

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #114: Hybrid Tax Incentive Confusion
This podcast investigates a tricky question -- the matter of exactly how much the tax credits for hybrids will be in 2006. While you may have heard or read estimates about the actual dollar amount, the fact is the IRS has yet to publish official rates for individual vehicles.
We interviewed Mark Steber, Vice President of Tax Resouces for Jackson Hewitt, who explained the difference between a tax deduction and tax credit, and why consumers may want to check in with a tax advisor before making a purchasing decision.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #103: Slow Down and Get Better Gas Mileage

It's just that simple. Drive the speed limit and get mileage that may shock you, please you and might even beat the EPA rated numbers.
We got 33.8 mpg in the 2006 VW Jetta 2.0T, simply by using the cruise control and keeping speed to only about 5-10 miles an hour over the limit.
There's also some gas saving tips we got from Ford's recent hybrid patrol, and finally, we promote our new video program, Zero to 120.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #101: Zipcar's Throwing a San Fran Car Bash

Zipcar, the revolutionary car sharing service, is throwing a "car bash" in San Francisco tomorrow, to benefit breast cancer and publicize their new West Coast expansion.
Armed with a $10 milllion investment, Zipcar has been expanding and is now in 9 states and 28 cities. Essentially a simplified, affordable and decentralized car rental service, Zipcar costs $50 to join and charges consumers an hourly fee to drive around in one of their 800 vehicles.
At the San Fran event, participants who pay either $1 or $5 will get a hammer to swing at an old gas guzzling vehicle -- and will also receive a half price membership and a $25 Zip credit. The first 2,000 attendees will also get a coupon for a free XM satellite radio [monthly service fee not included].

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #98: I Love Pass-Through Seating

Pass-through seating -- the prosaic revolution? As consumers show more of an interest in cars, this simple feature will prove to be a bigger selling point than a lot of the fancy doo-dads we get blared at us in car marketing.
Pass-through is simple. The rear seats fold down, usually in a 60-40 split, granting access to the trunk and the main compartment, increasing cargo storage ability.
I used the Kia Spectra's pass-through seats this weekend to carry 7 bags of cedar mulch, three flats of flowers, a 25-pound bag of bird seed and a box of gargbage bags from Lowe's to the "job site." The car was fine with the weight and my rear view vision was not obscured.
Also in this podcast we address the fallout from my "I Hate Tiptronic" podcast, and point out some of our listeners comments about the transmission. If you're interested in learning about VW's DSG system, you may want to check out this article at Green Car Congress.
Also of interest for those vehicle shoppers concerned with interior cargo volume, check out the new Fuel Economy Guide from the EPA. In the rear of the book, you'll find cargo interior volume numbers for most vehicles in their index entries.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #97: I Hate Tiptronic
In this podcast, I regale you with my absolute, 100%, unwavering hatred of tipronic transmissions.
Tiptronic, a feature that allows you to kind of shift, kind of approximate a manual transmission, is the dumbest thing ever put anywhere near a moving vehicle.
It does nothing, it serves no purpose. Tiptronic is an insult and I wish there was such a thing as a neutron bomb for auto journalists where I could push a button and make them all go away. Forever.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #83: The Wonderful World of Psychographics
There's a psychological premise that holds that all decisions are rational, according to the individual's psychology.
I think this is true, especially for car buyers -- and I don't agree for a minute that people who buy cars are looking at engine size, gear ratios or any other technical data.
This podcast discusses the wonderful world of psychographics and ventures a theory that while car purchases are rational for everyone, they are based more on emotional components than technical specs.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #74: When Free Parking Ain't
In this podcast, we find out how geting free parking can be a curse in disguise.
I was driving the Infiniti QX56 SUV this weekend and was determined to get free parking rather than pay $20, during a trip to a trade show at the Washington, DC Convention Center.
The only problem was, I didn't make a mental note of what street I was on before walking away.
By the end of the day, I had walked more than 22,000 steps as recorded on my pedometer, and when I took my shoes off at one point, they were smoking like an old time athlete's foot commercial.
Ouch -- and that's my feet talking. Funny stuff!
Finally, the day was saved because god's grace brought me the nicest cab driver behind a wheel that day.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #58: Can Ford Sell a Million Pickups? Will Toyota Take the Small Pickup Crown?
Drilling down into the sales reports is always fun. In this podcast, after analyzing the Ford F-Series sales figures for July and the year-to-date, I discuss that it appears they have a long, though plausible, shot at selling a million trucks in one calendar year.
Also, the Toyota Tacoma continues to stay ahead of the competition in the small pickup category, and threatens to be the first international product to ever capture a light truck crown.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast #51: Highway Bill Contains Hybrid & Tow Truck Rules
This podcast discusses Congress passing a massive highway bill that is going to rain down jobs and moeny to practically every little nook and cranny of their districts -- and there's some new rules tucked in all the little potholes of the new law as well.
Included among these are an exemption allowing hybrids to drive on HOV lanes in California -- if CARB can figure out the language -- and a proviso allowing states to regulate tow truck companies that have been preying on unsuspecting drivers everywhere.

In keeping with our regimen of publishing a daily podcast about cars, don't despair, this is a "meta" podcast, and there will be a regular daily update immediately following this one.

Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast: Audi Branding, Plus the Solberg Subaru Report
This podcast covers a weird coincidence of two Audi branding spottings, plus a report from the Jersey event where World Rally Champ Petter Solberg signed swag and greeted about 300 fans.
Besides the car carrier carrying Audi's wrapped in branded shrouds, I started watching the movie, I, Robot, before I felt like following the Three Laws of Podcasting and got around to this production -- and what did I see but this future Audimobile, which is pretty well done. Especially, the logo where the four rings are outline in red -- good bang for the product placement bucks, I'd say.

For the record, the jingle was written by composer Vic Mizzy, whose contribution to public safety was detailed in this New York Daily News article. The cover version of the jingle, "In the Middle, In the Middle, In the Middle," was performed by the alternative rock band, They Might Be Giants.

Audio Podcast: Goldberg Talks about Being an Automaniac for the History Channel
Bill Goldberg, former wrestling star and current host of Automaniac on the History Channel, gave us an interview about his new show -- and his personal relationship with Burt Reynolds.
Also included in this interview is a suggestion on what you should never call Goldberg -- at least not to his face. Unless you're Burt Reynolds.
For more information on the show, which airs every Wednesday night this summer at 10 EST, check out the website.

Listen to the Notebook Every Day! Check out the Podcast Archives!
If you are a new reader, check out our daily podcast -- it's a daily audio story, generally two to four minutes long, covering the auto news of the moment. The podcast archives can be found here.
They are in MP3 format, and can be listened to directly through the website, or by subscribing to the daily "feed" that is directly downloaded to your computer. To listen directly, click on the link provided in each story you see with that big giant ear on the right.
To subscribe to the show, you will need to download and install a software program known as a "podcatcher." I recommend iPodder, a small, simple program you can download through this link.
It's simple to use. Once the program is on your computer, you can subscribe to the Car Buyer's Notebook Podcast by entering this URL in the line under the "status" tab: http://carbuyersnotebook.libsyn.com/rss.
Then, under the "scheduler" tab, set the download time for either once daily, or every eight hours. The show will be automatically transferred to your computer -- without interrupting your work -- whenever the software activates.
After it's on your machine, you need a way to open it -- generally, most people use iTunes software, which you can get here. After that, you can either listen on your computer, or transfer it to an MP3 player to take on the road with you. This is how it got the name "podcasting" as the format took off after Apple grabbed the attention of the marketplace with their popular audio player, the iPod.

Audio Podcast: Car Buyer's Bill of Rights Likely to Become Law in California
The amended legislation, crafted in concert with the car dealer's association, retains many consumer protection safeguards while ensuring dealers can make enough to stay in business.
The law was passed by the California legislature last year but was vetoed by Governor Schwarzengger. With the car dealers supporting this version, it's likely it will become law.

Podcast Audio: High Tech End to Car Chases
A California company is working on a roof-top mounted transmitter capable of stopping cars by messing with their onboard processors. This would bring vehicles to a safe halt without endangering police, pedestrians or guard rails.
Of course, the perp will probably still jump out of the car so he can get shot.
What are LA-based TV stations going to do? Will they sue for violation of their first amendment rights to scare the public?
