Researchers Work to Turn Car's Exhaust into Power
WARREN, Mich. -- The stinky, steaming air that escapes from a car's tailpipe could help us use less gas. Researchers are competing to meet a challenge from the U.S. Department of Energy: Improve fuel economy 10 percent by converting wasted exhaust heat into energy that can help power the vehicle.
General Motors Corp. is close to reaching the goal, as is a BMW AG supplier working with Ohio State University. Their research into thermoelectrics - the science of using temperature differences to create electricity - couldn't come at a better time as high gas prices accelerate efforts to make vehicles as efficient as possible.

Nissan shows test models of electric car
YOKOSUKA, Japan -- Nissan showed on Wednesday a spiffy electric car packed with a battery developed by the Japanese automaker to deliver more power than the type common in today's hybrids.
The electric vehicle, set for sale in 2010, carried a 300 kilogram (660 pounds) lithium-ion battery and still zipped around a Nissan Motor Co. test course, accelerating more quickly than comparable gas-engine cars.
It was extremely quiet, absent of engine noise _ a trademark of electric vehicles. Details such as cruising range are yet to be determined, Nissan officials said.

Bush Rules on Fuel Economy Hit from 2 Sides
At the first public hearing on the rules Monday, critics accused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of using false assumptions about gas prices and environmental impacts when it set the proposed fuel economy standards. For their part, auto industry officials insisted that the standards are so aggressive, they might be tough for some automakers to meet.
David Westcott, a Buick and Pontiac dealer from North Carolina who spoke on behalf of the National Automobile Dealers Association, noted that new vehicle sales have plummeted to a two-decade low as cash-strapped consumers are having trouble getting the credit needed to make a purchase. He warned that if adding new fuel-saving technologies increases the price of vehicles, it could keep many Americans from trading in their older, less efficient cars and trucks.

Proposal for Fuel Economy Loan Adds Supporters
WASHINGTON -- Backers of a program that would lend up to $25 billion to automakers and auto parts suppliers said Monday they had garnered 71 U.S. House members to support their search for $3.75 billion in funding over the next couple of months. The program, known as the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Incentive Program, was meant to help automakers meet fuel economy standards of 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
Created but not funded by Congress last year, the program would provide low-cost loans to cash-strapped automakers and their suppliers for engineering fuel-efficient vehicles or converting old plants.

Fuel Economy Push Hits Snags
WASHINGTON -- A Bush administration proposal to boost fuel efficiency of automobiles to 31.5 miles per gallon by 2015 is raising hackles on two sides: from car makers, who say it is too tough, and from some Democrats, who say it isn't tough enough. At issue is how to implement a landmark law passed last year that requires the Department of Transportation to raise fuel-economy standards for cars and light trucks to a fleetwide average of 35 mpg by 2020.
The law gives the Department of Transportation authority to set interim standards. The department's proposal for 2015 is a 25% increase from the present and amounts to the fastest leap in the 33-year history of the federal automobile-fuel-economy program.

BMW to Test Electric-Powered Minis
BMW has said it will outfit ``several hundred'' Mini cars with electric motors to test the technology for future models.
``This step will allow the BMW Group to gain an initial knowledge of how mobility can be achieved efficiently using purely electrically powered vehicles,'' Norbert Reithofer, chief executive officer of the Munich-based carmaker, said today in a statement.
BMW has put more effort into researching hydrogen-combustion engines, rather than electric motors because of electric-powered vehicles' limited range and performance. The test is scheduled to last 12 to 18 months and comes as other carmakers are readying vehicles for production.

Ford Waits as GM, Toyota Take Lead on Plug-In Hybrids
Ford Motor Co., under pressure to trim its reliance on trucks, said it's taking a measured approach on plug-in hybrid vehicles by letting rivals assume the risk of marketing the new technology.
"If customers aren't buying them, we're not making them," Ted Miller, Ford's senior manager of energy storage, said in an interview [last week]. "If there's going to be a true plug-in hybrid market, we're going to be there. It's just that that's a huge commitment to actually go to production."
That tack may force the world's third-largest automaker to play catch-up if plug-ins such as General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet Volt concept can be built in high volume. The chief hurdle is a rechargeable battery for extended electric-only use. GM and Toyota Motor Corp., the biggest automakers, are racing to introduce a vehicle able to recharge from household electrical sockets in 2010. Ford has a test fleet of 20 plug-in sport-utility vehicles, without a target date for selling them.

Drivers Paid to Retire Old Cars
WASHINGTON -- Some U.S. states and Canada are boosting efforts to get older, dirtier cars off the roads. The moves come as people are holding onto vehicles longer than ever, amid a weakening economy.
And it's expected that people will hold on to their cars and trucks even longer when new U.S. fuel efficiency rules boosting the industrywide, fleet average to 35 miles per gallon drive up the price of new vehicles.
In January, Texas unveiled a $45 million annual program, dubbed "Drive a Clean Machine" that offers up to $3,500 toward a new vehicle for consumers in Austin, Houston and the Dallas-Fort Worth area who make lower incomes and own a vehicle at least 10 years old. The program has retired more than 11,000 vehicles this year, said Andrea Morrow, a spokeswoman for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

McCain Challenges Auto Makers on Fuel Efficiency
Republican presidential contender John McCain challenged auto makers to increase fuel-efficiency and create a zero-emissions vehicle. Sen. McCain's speech Monday at Fresno State University in California expanded on his broader energy policy, which is aimed at reducing dependence on foreign oil and helping the ailing U.S. economy.
Sen. McCain proposed two incentives to help Americans move to more-fuel-efficient vehicles. To the consumer, he offered a "Clean Car Challenge," proposing a $5,000 tax credit to drivers who buy a zero-emissions car. He also said that as president, he would offer a $300 million "prize" -- about $1 for every person in the country -- to the auto maker that developed a new car battery that would do better than the existing electric and hybrid options.

Volvo Awards Environment Prize to Crawford "Buzz" Holling
The Volvo Environment Prize, administered by an independent foundation, this year goes to Buzz Holling, Canadian ecologist and scientist, whose theories on how ecosystems deal with sudden changes have had great global influence.
Today, with many worrying about global climate change and unexpected natural disasters, Buzz Holling stresses the importance of increasing our society's ability to be flexible and cope with change. This is necessary for the continued use of natural resources, because crisis, Holling says, is an inevitable part of nature's way of functioning.

Ford's Green Plant Celebrates Fifth Anniversary
DEARBORN, Mich. - When Ford Motor Company's Rouge Plant Manager Rob Webber looks out his office window at the facility's "living" roof he sees a field of green where Canadian geese, mallard ducks and killdeer nest and raise offspring. Seeing wildlife flourish at the Rouge Center would have seemed farfetched five years ago.
"You wouldn't have seen this when the Rouge was just black top, concrete and steel," Webber said. "The greening has transformed it."

Energy Department Grants $30M to Plug-in Vehicle Projects
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Energy Department on Thursday announced $30 million in funding over three years for a trio of plug-in vehicle projects -- a fraction of the financial support automakers have sought, but a step they praised nonetheless.
Detroit's automakers will use the money for plug-in vehicle test fleets and to accelerate mass production of battery technologies. There is concern among automakers and Congress that the United States could replace reliance on imported oil with reliance on imported batteries, since most battery production is in Asia.

Finnish Co-Op Seeks to Electrify Corollas
A Finnish start-up is trying to aggregate over 500 customers to sign up for Toyota Corollas that will be turned into all-electric vehicles -- the theory being that a bulk order will make the cars as affordable as traditional gas models.
While the effort sounds honorable, it's a little short on specifics, such as who is actually going to be doing the conversions, but we understand this is essentially an attempt to create interest first, and flesh out the details later.

Time for an SUV Bailout?
With gas prices hitting an average $3.78 a gallon in the U.S., millions of people who thought it was their god given right to plow down the freeway in vehicles that were more buses than cars are fretting that they can't afford the gas to go and buy something they don't need. You know, in order to do their part for the economy.
So maybe it's time for a bailout for these suckers, who used to love looking down their noses at furry environmentalists driving crap boxes, and who now look forlornly as life passes them by on the way to the mall.
You see, we thought of this because of the current fervor over mortgage bailouts, the theory of which says we can't have people, and the banks that enable them, suffering due to their bad decisions and/or greed and/or fraudulent behavior.
So why don't we give people a free house and buy back their big SUV at the same time, replacing it with an economical car?
The biggest question should be where to attach the bow -- on the car or the house? And hey, if Ty Pennington will show up for the house rechristening, we'll show up for the BRAND NEW CAR! presentation.

2008 Fuel Economy Guide Available for Download
The EPA has issued a comprehensive PDF guide to fuel economy of all 2008 vehicles, which you can download by right-clicking here.
In today's gas market, buyers are more sensitive than ever about buying cars that get good mileage, and more important, they want the government ratings to be as accurate as possible -- nobody wants to buy a vehicle that gets 10% worse mileage in the real world than the sticker rating.
To address this situation, the EPA has started using an updated test to assign more accurate MPG ratings to new vehicles, and you can learn about that by watching the video in this post.

Auto Makers Stress Importance of National Fuel Economy Standard
WASHINGTON -- Several auto industry lobby groups will host a briefing for members of the media to discuss the importance of preserving the single, national fuel economy standard signed into law last year.
Efforts in Congress to overturn the EPA waiver decision would create a new state-by-state fuel efficiency standard for the industry. This would result in unnecessary manufacturing complexity, compliance inefficiencies and a reduction in consumer choice.

Chevron Faces $16 Billion Environmental Claim in Ecuador
SAN FRANCISCO -- Chevron Corp. has only itself to blame for facing a looming judgment of up to $16 billion in a historic environmental case in Ecuador, because it produced most of the evidence that is now being used against it, say representatives of the Amazon Defense Coalition, a group representing 80 communities and five indigenous groups in the class-action lawsuit.
"It has become clear that the court-appointed expert who came up with the $16 billion damages claim against Chevron relied largely on Chevron's own evidence," said Pablo Fajardo, the lead lawyer for the plaintiffs who is in San Francisco to receive the Goldman Prize for Excellence in Protecting the Environment, long considered the "Oscars" for the environmental movement.

Why automakers don't sell a car that gets 50mpg
So gas just hit another miserable milestone. Unleaded regular is averaging a record $3.30 a gallon and seems likely to blast past $4 by Memorial Day.
Wouldn't it be great if you could drive a car that gets 50 miles per gallon? Well, you can. Just hop on a plane and fly to Europe, where all new cars average 43mpg, or Japan, where the average hits 50mpg. Here in the United States, we're stuck at 25mpg in our considerably larger and more powerful cars, trucks and SUVs.
So why can't we do better? Here's the dirty little secret: we can.
"If you want better fuel economy, it's just a question of when auto companies want to do it and when consumers decide they want to buy it," says Don Hillebrand, a former Chrysler engineer who is now director of transportation research for Argonne National Labs. "Auto companies can deliver it within a year."

Diesels look to rev up their reputations
Diesel-powered vehicles haven’t enjoyed the best reputation in the United States, despite the well-known benefit of impressive fuel efficiency. Consumers have long been unimpressed by other traits, such as their black clouds of exhaust soot, ear-rattling racket and, ahem, let’s call it “stately” acceleration.
But an emerging generation of new diesel vehicles looks set to upend those expectations. Some high-performance models will soon exploit the fuel economy benefits of diesel power while delivering the neck-snapping acceleration associated with gas-guzzling cars.
