At Ford, End of a Big-vehicle Era Takes a Toll

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Company tallied the financial impact on Thursday of falling sales of its big pickups and sport utility vehicles, which contributed to the worst quarterly loss in its 105-year history. While Ford's auto operations lost $1 billion in the second quarter, the bulk of the company's $8.7 billion loss came from write-downs in the value of its truck factories and lease portfolios.

The huge charges reflect the diminishing value of both the plants and the vehicles they produce. So far this year, sales of large pickups are down 25 percent, and S.U.V.'s have fallen 32 percent, according to the trade journal Ward's Automotive Reports.

But the impact is hurting automakers in more than just sales of new trucks. "There are multiple second- and third-order impacts," [said Brian Johnson of Lehman Brothers.] "We're seeing it in lease residuals, we're seeing it in loan losses, and we're seeing an impact in the showroom, because people can't get enough on their old cars to make it worthwhile to get into a new car."

Car Buyers Downsize, but Spend Big on Options

DETROIT -- Consumers used to buy small cars for a simple reason: they were cheap. A decade ago, many budget-minded shoppers turned down even options like air-conditioning, power windows and compact disc players to keep the price low. Now people of all income levels are buying small cars to pinch pennies at the gas pump, but they are not scrimping on creature comforts.

Instead, they are spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on options, like heated leather seats and high-end entertainment systems, usually found in luxury cars. Small-car buyers often pay $600 for a sunroof, $500 for satellite radio or $400 for a hands-free phone system. Some even spend $300 for colorful interior lights.

Carmakers adding digital radio

More carmakers are adding digital radio tuners in their bid to woo audiophiles and add electronics.

The latest is Hyundai, which this month will offer digital radio -- known as HD Radio -- in a package on its new Genesis sedan. Among others, BMW already offers an HD tuner as a stand-alone option, and Volvo is going to offer HD Radio standard on most models early next year.

"Some of the automakers known for innovation are picking up on this," says Diane Warren, executive vice president of the radio industry's HD Radio Alliance. "The rest of the industry will follow."

More than 1,700 AM and FM stations also broadcast an HD digital signal, as well as traditional analog signal, up from 11 in 2002, the alliance says. Because digital uses less of a station's allotted bandwidth, many also air second or third signals of specialized shows.

OMAHA, Neb. -- When it comes to energy, Americans worry most about dependence on foreign oil.

Almost half of the 1,200 voters polled by Peter D. Hart Research Associates Inc. rate imports as one of their two biggest energy concerns. A distant second is the lack of viable alternatives to fossil fuels.

The U.S. imports about two-thirds of its oil. Of all the energy the country consumes every year, only 6 percent is renewable (excluding nuclear). The rest is oil, gas and coal.

Chrysler Statement on Jim Press' Toyota Slap

Editor's note: Jim Press said when he was at Toyota, "the Japanese government paid for 100% of the development of the battery and hybrid system that went into the Toyota Prius." That got Toyota's panties in a bunch. What follows is Chrysler's backpedaling:

There have been several news reports today concerning statements made by Chrysler LLC Vice Chairman and President Jim Press on battery development for hybrid vehicles. First of all, Press was not speaking negatively of Toyota.

In a recent interview, he referenced the close cooperation between the Japanese government and Japanese industry. He said the Japanese government strongly supported R & D (research and development) investment in battery development, and the Prius and other Japanese models benefited from that investment in industry.

If adopted as proposed, key provisions of the ISOR would needlessly weaken the intended purpose of the ZEV Regulation, rather than “strengthen the overall objective of the program” and “maintain pressure on the commercialization of PURE ZEV technologies,” as CARB has publicly committed to doing.

In Praise of Preston Trombly, Sirius Radio's Classical Music DJ

SIRIUS-SATELLITE-RADIO-LOGOsm.jpgWhile test driving cars over the last several years, I'm always excited to discover the vehicle has Sirius Satellite radio installed and activated.

When it does, I immediately set the station to Channel 80, known as "Symphony Hall," Sirius' home for classical music. Listening to classical in the car has its own benefits -- a refuge from the clatter of the day, stress relief while driving, and the sheer enjoyment of the content.

But I prefer Symphony Hall over any other classical station I've listened to over the years because of Preston Trombly, the weekday work time announcer.

I've never met the guy, but talk about a name made for classical radio! Did Preston go to prep school? Did Mr. Trombly practice the trombone as a tot? Who knows, the way the world surprises you, maybe he was actually born with that moniker and destiny led him to Sirius.

Mercedes research into alternate internal combustion designs

580801_102875.jpgWhen the automobile was invented in 1886, the reciprocating piston engine became the generally established form of vehicle drive.

However, there were also other principles for combustion engines that could use the power of a fuel explosion to propel the vehicle.

Felix Wankel was the inventor of the rotary piston engine, an initial model of which he patented in 1933. The basic principle of the engine is that the pistons rotate, instead of moving up and down, which means that the engine can be made relatively smaller and run more quietly.

The major features of the two-seater vehicle, which was completed in 1885, were the compact high-speed single-cylinder four-stroke engine installed horizontally at the rear, the tubular steel frame, the differential and three wire-spoked wheels.

Get the Car Buyer's Notebook Widget!

Car_Buyers_Notebook_Widget.jpgAren't you tired of constantly navigating to sites, several times a day to keep up with the latest news?

I know I am -- and that's why I love widgets.

Widgets are these cool pieces of desktop "furniture" [like ours at right] that you can add to your computer -- and thus have a continuous live feed of updated news -- without going to a website to scan for cool stuff. [The widget can either be "parked" on top of all windows, or left underneath -- they're customizable, too!]

In the case of Car Buyer's Notebook, we have created just such a widget for you to download to your desktop -- and when you see a story you're really interested in, click on the title and it will take you to a new browser window to see the whole thing.

Getting our widget is simple -- there's only two steps:

1. Go to Springwidgets and download the widget software.

2. Go to this page, and get the Car Buyer's Notebook widget by clicking on the little green cog underneath the widget itself. This will add our widget to your widget menu.

And you will be in automotive widget heaven!
