The Chromin' Empire is Conquering Fashionable Vehicle Owners Everywhere

chrmwl.jpgDETROIT - Just as a gleaming piece of jewelry can transform an outfit from drab to fab, an increasing number of vehicle owners are using chrome to personalize their cars and trucks and make a rolling fashion statement.

That statement can be as subtle as the simple, elegant addition of a few polished chrome door handles; or as bold as a bumper-to-bumper, heavy-metal extravaganza of sparkling, 22-inch plus-sized wheels; grille inserts; tubular assist steps; brush grille guards; fuel filler door covers; exhaust tips and more.

"The beauty of chrome is that you can dress up your vehicle to fit your taste, your style and your budget, whether you drive an economy sedan, a family SUV or a high-performance roadster," said Nancy Phillippart, executive director, GM Accessories, which sells a complete range of accessories through the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, HUMMER, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands. "Chrome can be a great, cost-effective way to personalize a vehicle."

Last fan standing drives home the No. 48 Monte Carlo

Ten finalists vie for their chance to win a specially wrapped Monte Carlo opening day of State Fair of Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas - Contestants will vie for an opportunity to win a 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that will carry the decal package of Team Chevy NASCAR star Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 Lowe's NEXTEL Cup ride. Ten finalists will place their hands on the 2007 Monte Carlo beginning, Friday, September 29, for their chance to drive home the specially wrapped Monte Carlo. The contest is scheduled to begin on the opening day of the State Fair of Texas within the Chevrolet display and Test Drive area located near Gate 11.

The Jimmie Johnson "Hands On" Promotion offers a unique opportunity for one lucky entrant to win a new Chevy Monte Carlo in an endurance contest that culminates with literally a "last person standing" finale. Each finalist will place one designated hand on the car when the contest begins, and they must be standing and in continuous contact with the prize vehicle 24 hours per day, excluding sanctioned breaks. The last person standing with their hand on the '07 Monte Carlo, which has a retail value of $34,500, will take it home.

"I thought keeping my hands on the wheel of the No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet for three or so hours in a Cup race was hard work, but keeping your hand on the car for 24 hours or more will be quite a test of endurance. But considering the grand prize is a 2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, it will be well worth it," Johnson said. "With three great partners involved - Lowe's, Chevrolet and Texas Motor Speedway - you know this is going to be a good deal."

For those finalists who do not win the car, each will receive a prize package that consists of a Charbroil commercial grill, $100 Lowe's gift card, 1:24 scale die-cast Team 48 car signed by Johnson and a Team 48 cap.

Top Ten Fuel Efficient SUVs for 2006

06RAV4.jpg

Regardless of whether your mode of transportation is a Schwinn, a Hummer H1, or a pair of worn-out Nikes, fuel-prices are hitting your wallet just like the rest of us.

When gas prices rise, everything else gets more expensive, and when cars start selling like hotcakes in rapidly expanding markets like China and India, demand usually dictates more pain at the pump.

This is especially painful for drivers who need a spacious and roomy vehicle such as SUVs, a ride that is typically unkind in its unquenchable thirst for petrol. Indeed, there are times when a Toyota Prius or a bus pass won’t do, so we’ve compiled a list of ten fuel-efficient, 2006 SUVs that are currently available, all boasting respectable EPA-rated fuel economy figures and more utility than a Little Red Wagon.

How to Buy Classic Car Insurance

If you are fortunate enough to own a classic car - or any collectible automobile - then you want to ensure that your luck does not run out because of having inadequate insurance coverage. Call it covering your butt - or covering your "asset" - but by all means, call one of the major providers such as American Collectors, Haggerty, or Parish Heacock insurance companies and let them put you in the driver's seat in terms of professional protection of your cherished automotive investment.

How to Kick the Tires on Classic Car Insurance

The whole idea of insurance is that it needs to do what you expect of it in an emergency, when the rubber really hits the road. And classic car insurance is as different from conventional auto insurance as, well, a classic car is from your run of the mill generic vehicle.

When you buy a classic car insurance policy, you are essentially purchasing protection for those times when - God forbid and knock on wood it doesn't happen - disaster strikes in the form of a fire, a collision, or an act of theft or vandalism. Just as we now have modern airbags to save us in the event of a crash, we also have collector's car insurance, to protect us with adequate moneybags when calamity throws a wrench in the works.

10 Reasons To Get A CarFax Report

A CarFax report is affordable. For less than $50.00, consumers can learn everything that they need to know about a vehicle before agreeing to make a purchase and signing on the dotted line.

With a CarFax report, you will be able to confirm the automobile’s VIN number, year, make and model. This is important in making sure that you are purchasing the automobile as it is being presented to you for sale.

With a CarFax report, you can find out if the automobile has ever been flooded or has been repaired for any flood damage. This is very important, especially if purchased in areas that are prone to flooding, hurricane damage, etc. Even if an area is not prone to flood damage, there is always the possibility that an automobile has traveled through high water or been exposed to it at some point.

Why Vehicle Accident Photographs Are Valuable

You were humming along on a bright and sunny day when suddenly Fred Fuddle, a local character from a nearby town, drunk as a skunk and zooming along in his pickup, flew through stop sign crashing into the right front of your motor vehicle. You had no choice to avoid him. Now the time has come to settle your claim for property damage and personal injuries. Let’s talk about photographs one of the basics that should have been taking place - - just as soon as possible - - after that impact had taken place.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF INJURIES: Photographs are often the best evidence you can produce to increase the value of your claim. If your accident causes bodily injuries that are visible (such as bruises, deep cuts, swellings, lacerations, dislocations and/or black and blue marks) it’s crucial, to the ultimate settlement value of your case, that you have photographs taken of those just as soon as possible! Take them from 3 feet away and also as close as you can so as to capture the seriousness of their existence. When you hand those to Adjuster I. M. Smart from the Granite Insurance Company believe me when I tell you he’ll stare at them and blanch!

Some Thoughts On Becoming A Trucker

If you have the will to explore around the country and get paid at the same time, consider being a trucker. Truckers enjoy some benefits that people in other capacites do not have, namely the camaraderie among other Truckers, meeting new people, being able to witness the changing seasons as you commute around the country, unpredictability (in other words, less boredom!), and plenty of available trucking stations. All are valid reasons why people chuck their current occupations for the chance at the open interstate highway.

Of course, as with all major life determinations, changing jobs to drive a truck takes some information. To begin with, think about how your personal life will change. There will instances when you might miss your son’s baseball games or be late getting home for the holidays because of arterial conditions due to the weather. Extended periods away from home sometimes take a toll on a person, so you have to decide whether driving trucks is right for you.

Toyota WV Plant To Expand For Fifth Time in a Decade

With Toyota seeking to expand global production to nearly 10 million vehicles by 2008, the automaker's Buffalo, West Virginia plant is in the process of its fifth expansion since the plant opened in 1996. The Buffalo plant manufactures engines for Toyota's Corolla, Sienna, and Solara models. It also makes transmissions for the Sienna, Avalon and Lexus RX350 lines, reports The State Journal.

The plant is in the process of expanding to include production lines for six-speed automatic transmissions and a new four-cylinder engine. Those projects will be complete in July 2007. "When we announced the opening plant 10 years ago, we had a four-cylinder engine line with 200 production team members," said David Copenhaver, vice president of administration at the Buffalo plant. The plant has now surpassed 1,100 workers and continues to grow.

Kerkorian Move Raises Questions

The move by billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian yesterday to make public his interest in buying up to 12 million additional shares in General Motors has sparked questions on what his motive behind the announcement may be.

Some people in the industry believe Kerkorian is just looking for a larger stake in the automaker and is not making the move to try and influence an alliance with Renault-Nissan.

Dave Cole, president of the Center for Automotive Research, is quoted in today's Chicago Tribune as saying, "with or without Renault-Nissan, GM is ahead of the game in its restructuring, and Kerkorian sees that and thinks he can make money."

Argus Research analyst Kevin Tynan, however, believes Kerkorian's move is a way to "publicly nudge GM a little closer to an alliance," since Kerkorian's investment firm Tracinda Corp. promoted the alliance talks in the first place. George Peterson, president of automotive research and consulting firm AutoPacific, sees both motives at work.

"Purchasing more GM shares gives off vibrations he's more positive about GM and that the stock is still at a bargain value so he can pick up 12 million more shares and make a lot of money on it," he said. "It also puts him in a slightly stronger position to exert pressure on an alliance, which would result in a rapid short-term appreciation in the value of GM stock and bring him a huge return on his investment."

Foreign car companies working Detroit

International nameplate autos have moved into the Detroit-to-Ann Arbor corridor in search of the abundance of engineering and design talent around the area, reports The Associated Press.

Asian cars and trucks developed and designed in the Detroit area include Toyota's Camry, Sienna minivan, and Avalon sedan; Nissan's Titan, Altima, and Versa; and soon vehicles from Hyundai and Kia.

Toyota's technical center in Ann Arbor employs almost 700 people and the automaker is building a second facility nearby with room to grow. Hyundai-Kia opened its tech center in Ann Arbor last year and has about 300 designers and engineers working on vehicles to be built at plants in Alabama and Georgia.

Nissan already has 1,200 workers, mostly engineers and designers, in nearby Farmington Hills.

Scion design: you can win a chance to design the next Scion showroom

flrpln.jpg

Toyota launches Showroom Design Contest that takes place entirely online

Geared for youthful car buyers, Scion is the latest line of cars from Toyota Motor Corporation. To carve out a home for the brand, the car manufacturer has launched an international showroom design competition, Scion Floorplan.

Applicants should submit a written description and a complete design concept for a 750-square-foot showroom online. The first prize winner will take home $5,000—and earn the opportunity to see his or her idea realized. Second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively.

Each concept must include what the manufacturer calls the Discovery Area, an area to communicate the brand and educate potential buyers, and the Consultation Area, a semi-private space for sales consultants.

The winning entry will be selected in December by Scion executives and retail environment design firm Commune based on creativity, manufacturability, functionality, and appropriateness to the Scion brand and the buyer.

“Since the brand’s inception we have worked to support musicians, artists, and filmmakers,” says Alan Mimaki, business operations manager for Scion. “We are very excited to add architects and interior designers and look forward to see their visions of the next generation Scion showroom.”

More information is available on the Scion Floorplan Web site.

GM Announces Corporate Ad Agency Addition

DETROIT – General Motors Corp. has named Deutsch, Inc., in Los Angeles, an official advertising agency of record. Beginning, Jan. 1, 2007, Deutsch will work on specific reputational projects such as promoting GM’s leadership in quality, alternative fuels, economic impact and the environment.

Last month, Deutsch LA was responsible for the successful “Elevate” campaign to announce GM’s 100,000 mile / 5 year warranty.

“GM is fundamentally changing the way we market and sell our vehicles. We are very focused on addressing the quality perception gap between how consumers view GM cars and trucks and the reality of how beautifully designed and well-engineered they truly are,” said Mike Jackson, GM North America vice president, Marketing and Advertising. “The GM 100,000 Mile Warranty campaign, which Deutsch helped us launch last month, is the latest example of this new level of confidence at GM today.” GM is challenging all of its agencies to improve consideration by not only promoting its new vehicle lineup, but by closing the perceptual gap in areas such as quality and fuel efficiency.

ACDelco Fall Car Care Tips - Start with the "Four Bs"

GRAND BLANC, MICH. -- Along with the change of seasons from fall to winter comes the likelihood of poor road conditions and reduced visibility. Automotive breakdowns, never convenient, can be even more dangerous in cold weather. Preventive vehicle maintenance can help lessen the odds of mechanical failure.

"Fall is a crucial time to have your vehicle inspected, starting with the 'four Bs' -- batteries, brakes, wiper blades and belts and hoses," said Chris Vermette, ACDelco product specialist, Wiper Blades and Belts and Hoses. "Cold weather only makes existing problems worse. You never want to have a breakdown, but winter can be the worst possible time."

Vermette recommends vehicle owners check their Owner's Manual and the recommended vehicle maintenance schedules before taking their cars and trucks to a professional technician for a complete inspection, including the critical "Four Bs:"

Investing In Vehicle Maintenance Can Pay Dividends When It's Time To Sell Or Trade

Tips from GM Goodwrench can help reduce the overall cost of vehicle ownership

DETROIT - Besides a home, owning a vehicle is one of the biggest investments a consumer will make. That investment extends beyond the sticker in the vehicle's window: It includes insurance, fuel, regularly scheduled maintenance and depreciation.

The good news is that today's new cars and trucks are designed and built to run for more than 100,000 miles, remain in service an average of 16 years and serve four to five different owners, according to Tom Kontos, Vice President of Analytical Services for ADESA Inc., a leading provider of wholesale vehicle auctions and related services in North America. So while some costs - such as insurance premiums and gas - are largely outside of consumers' control, financially savvy owners can actively help improve their bottom line at sale or trade-in by keeping their vehicles properly maintained, according to industry experts.

Nearly 70 percent of those surveyed responded that they believed they were well-informed to get the best deal for their money at the time they bought their first car. Sixty-six percent correctly were aware that the best way to lower a monthly payment on car financing is to make a larger down payment, and 83 percent were aware that a monthly car payment should not exceed 20 percent of their take-home pay. General Motors Corp. plans to announce tomorrow that it will move a major chunk of its corporate-ad account from Interpublic Group of Cos.' McCann Erickson, Birmingham, Mich., to sibling Deutsch, Los Angeles.

The move will be another major coup for Deutsch, which got its foot in the door at the automaker last fall, when the agency started negotiations for Chevrolet's 2006 Major League Baseball and motor-sports marketing efforts. That business had been handled by Interpublic sibling Campbell-Ewald, Warren, Mich., which remains agency of record for Chevrolet, GM's biggest-selling vehicle. Deutsch recently completed work on the automaker's "Elevate" campaign.

GM's Mark LaNeve, VP-vehicle sales, service and marketing in North America, told Advertising Age he wasn't ready to discuss the matter. He maintained GM doesn't exactly have a "corporate account," but that its so-called reputational ads encompass everything from its OnStar service to Deutsch's "Elevate" ads that broke earlier this month for the automaker's new expanded warranty on all its 2007 models.

"We are looking at bringing in additional talent in that [reputational] area," he told Advertising Age. McCann, he said, will continue to handle national "retail stuff."

Executives from McCann declined comment; executives from Deutsch, Los Angeles did not return calls by press time.

Chrysler Plans Major Increase in Second-Half Ad Spending

Expects to Hike Outlay in Certain Months for Remainder of 2006

Chrysler Group's advertising spending "is going up dramatically" in the later part of this year, President-CEO Tom LaSorda said here today after a speech to the Automotive Press Association. The automaker will more than double spending "in certain months" compared with what was spent in the first half of 2006, he said.

The outlay will go partly toward its new-model launches. George Murphy, senior VP-marketing at Chrysler, told Advertising Age in June the automaker was conserving ad dollars from the first half of the year for the eight new-product launches in the later part of the year. Those launches include the Dodge Nitro sport utility vehicle, Dodge Avenger, Dodge Ram 3500, Chrysler Aspen SUV and Chrysler Sebring sedan, and for Jeep, the Patriot, Compass, an all-new Wrangler and the first four-door Wrangler. The marketer spent $527 million in U.S. measured media in the first half of this year, according to TNS Media Intelligence.

But the company is also planning some branding ads that will hit on the corporate blending of DaimlerChrysler's American and German engineering. Mr. LaSorda declined to discuss what form the next round of the "Dr. Z" ads with DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche will take; the initial "Dr. Z" spots left airwaves about a month ago.

Mercedes To Introduce Three Diesels in 2008

Mercedes-Benz said it would introduce to the U.S. market in 2008 three diesel models – the M and GL SUVs and R-Class sport wagons equipped with the automaker's Bluetec emissions technology and a 3.0-liter, V-6 diesel that could achieve 35 miles per gallon, reports The Los Angeles Times.

Unlike the "hands-off" clean diesel engine unveiled by Honda, the Mercedes system requires motorists to periodically replenish the urea to ensure clean emissions. Mercedes will design the vehicles to meet the California's tough emissions standards.

Toyota Prepares To Adjust To Slow Start for New Tundra

Toyota's concern over fuel costs has caused the automaker to prepare for a slow sales start for the newest version of the Tundra pickup truck, set to go on sale in February 2007, reports The Wall Street Journal.

One measure Toyota is considering is to impose more manufacturing flexibility in its U.S.-based truck assembly plants in order to produce a broader range of light trucks – pickup trucks and truck-based SUVs -- on a given assembly line, thus absorbing any possible slips in product sales.

Toyota manufacturing officials say they have also begun exploring the possibility of bringing more truck-based vehicles to the automaker's Princeton, Indiana plant. The new Tundra's chief engineer, Yuichiro Obu, thinks the truck should be able to sell on its merits, which include: segment-leading capabilities, aggressive styling, a comfortable and quiet cabin, fuel economy, quality and durability.

Kerkorian Looks to Raise Stake in GM

Kirk Kerkorian, billionaire investor and top stakeholder for General Motors, told the automaker in a letter released today that his investment firm, Tracinda Corp., was considering buying an additional 12 million shares.

Kerkorian also called on GM's board to take a "strong" role in reviewing a potential alliance with Nissan-Renault, saying the possible tie-up remained an important opportunity for the automaker, reports Automotive News. A purchase of 12 million for Tracinda would bring Mr. Kerkorian's stake to 12 percent of the company. Going over 10 percent would require several regulatory approvals, because GM owns banking and insurance interests.

Doubt Is Cast On Industry Alliance Following Comments by GM Leaders

The first official meeting between GM CEO Rick Wagoner and Renault-Nissan Chief Carlos Ghosn ended in Paris yesterday with both sides issuing statements indicating the companies would continue to explore the proposed industry alliance through mid-October.

This morning; however, on opening day of the Paris Motor Show, comments made by GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz and Wagoner showed for the first time signs that GM may be backing away from a deal with Renault-Nissan. "We are in the throes of a revolution at General Motors. For the first time in our almost 100-year history, during the last 18 months, we have gone from a loose financial grouping of four regional auto companies that had very little to do with each other to being one unified company," said Mr. Lutz.

Big Year for Small Cars

Sales in the small car segment this year will near 2.5 million, the highest total since 2001, reports USA Today. The segment has enjoyed a huge sales boost this year amid high gasoline prices, added safety features, and more vehicle choices.

Small cars will account for 31.5 percent of the total passenger car market, up one percentage point from last year. Market research firm AutoPacific predicts that the market share of small cars will continue to climb through 2010. "Small cars and CUVs are going to rule," says George Pipas, market analyst for Ford Motor. That's bittersweet news for Detroit, he adds, because 72 percent of small cars sold are international brands.

New Car Price Cuts On the Way

The Wall Street Journal reports that GM, Ford and Chrysler may be moving away from high manufacturer incentives and rebates and looking towards value pricing and production cuts in order to get more in line with actual transaction prices and spur sales amid turbulent times.

Chrysler, for example, has lowered prices on all its Pacifica models, now down an average of $1,300, despite added safety and performance features. Meanwhile, the dollar amount paid by the consumer from 2006 to 2007 models remains relatively unchanged. Rising competition is leading to subsequent price cuts on international nameplate models such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Toyota.

VW said this week that it is pursuing a new pricing strategy that offers lower sticker prices while maintaining a high level of standard features; Toyota has cut prices on the 2007 Highlander Hybrid an average of 5.9 percent from 2006 model year prices. And the base Hyundai GLS Santa Fe model for 2007 starts at $21,595, down $700 from the 2006 model despite an additional third row of seating.

New Smart Park System Underscores Toyota's Relentless Push to Be No.1

In its relentless effort to meet the wants and needs of American consumers, Toyota has developed a new Lexus LS 460 Sedan which allows the car to park itself, with the driver playing a mere supporting role.

The LS 460, equipped with an industry-first eight-speed automatic transmission, a state-of-the-art aluminum V-8 engine that cranks out 380 horsepower, and an expected 19 mpg city/27 mpg highway, "represents... most of the reasons why Toyota is widely expected to become the world's No. 1 automaker sometime within the next two years," according to The Wall Street Journal.

Toyota, on its "technical tour de force," expects to sell 400,000 Lexus cars worldwide this year, and aims to close in on 500,000 next year. To view a demo of how the LS 460 can park itself, click here.

100 Plus Lawmakers Favor California Emissions Standards

More than 100 lawmakers urged the EPA to allow California to go ahead with new greenhouse gas limits on cars and trucks, reports The Hill. The proposed standards have sparked a court battle between state lawmakers and the automakers, who claim the state is exceeding its regulatory authority by effectively imposing mileage standards on cars and trucks, a power reserved for the federal government.

The letter, spearheaded by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) along with Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY), says California's new rule should be approved based on the Clean Air Act of 1970, which allows the state to develop its own standards on auto emissions as long as they aren't less rigorous than the federal standards.

Republican Reps. Chris Shays and Nancy Johnson of Connecticut, Curt Weldon (R-PA), David Reichart (R-WA), and Charles Bass (R-NH) also signed the letter. California's new standards start with the 2009 model year and are to be phased in over a period of eight years. The letter says the standards would cut "global warming pollution from new vehicles by almost 30 percent" by 2016.

GM To Ask for Compensation From Nissan, Renault

General Motors is prepared to tell Nissan and Renault today that it will require a multibillion-dollar payment from the two automakers in order to agree to a three-way alliance. GM would ask for the money to compensate for the greater value the automaker believes it would bring to any partnership, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The planned demand likely throws a wrench in the proposed alliance, and shows how far apart both sides are in reaching an agreement. Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn seeks a sweeping alliance which includes his companies taking ownership stakes in GM, but such a deal is unlikely to be offered or, in turn, accepted by GM Chief Rick Wagoner. Wagoner will face his board of directors on Oct. 3, at which time he will lay out his management's analysis that an alliance would favor Nissan-Renault rather than GM. A final decision is expected to be made by October 15.

Chrysler Announces '07 Model Incentives

The Chrysler Group told dealers of new incentives for several of its large 2007 vehicles last Friday despite complaints from some dealers that it has been hard to sell the remaining 2006 vehicles.

Chrysler expanded incentives to include rebates through Saturday of up to $2500 on 2007 minivans and the following models: Dodge Ram, Dodge Dakota, Jeep Commander, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the six-passenger Pacifica, reports The Detroit Free Press. The automaker also announced lease pull-ahead offers on select 2007 models.

Fed Warns of Inflation, Cites Autos and Housing as Weak Points of the Economy

Challenging speculation that interest rates will start going down next year, a top official at the Federal Reserve said on Monday that the economy is doing well but inflation remains a concern, reports Reuters.

"It is my considered judgment that the recent tempering of U.S. economic growth to a more sustainable rate, combined with the lagged effects of our 17 prior quarter [percentage] point rate increases, should act to lower the inflation rate over time. However, if this proves not to be the case, appropriate action will have to be taken," said the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Richard Fisher.

Fisher cited two weak points of the economy to be autos and housing, but noted conditions in his bank's region showed improved general business conditions and the highest capital spending levels since August of 2004.

Renault Executive Says GM Must Pay More Attention to Toyota

Renault's head of Product and Strategic Planning Patrick Pelata is quoted today in The Wall Street Journal as saying General Motors did not share the same sense of urgency as Renault and Nissan to fight rival Toyota, and that GM needed to confront Toyota's global expansion drive.

Talking to a group of U.S. journalists, Pelata said that he had warned GM Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer Frederick Henderson that if GM delayed solving its performance issues, "it's just going to get worse." Pelata added that members of GM's negotiating team appeared weary of a possible tie up with Renault-Nissan because of GM's past experiences with global alliances. Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn and GM Chief Rick Wagoner are scheduled to meet in Paris this week to further discuss the possibility of an alliance.

Chrysler Looking to Finalize a Subcompact Partnership by End of 2006

Chrysler Group CEO Tom LaSorda said on Monday the automaker aims to finalize by the end of this year a partner to build and launch a subcompact car, reports Reuters.

LaSorda also said the company has not ruled out China as an export hub for the new car. "We know we can't do it alone. The capital expense alone would be very high," he said. "If we cannot find a partner with a profitable business case we will not go into that segment."

LaSorda confirmed that the company had been in talks with automakers in Europe and Asia. Yesterday, Bloomberg reported on a story which first appeared in Germany's Der Spiegel magazine, claiming that DaimlerChrysler was close to reaching an agreement to sell Chinese-built Chery automobiles in the United States, and that the automaker may later develop and produce cars with Chery.

The Toyota Prius, the best-selling gas-electric hybrid vehicle in the United States and the world, offers a more engaging driving experience for 2007 with the availability of a new Touring Edition model. In addition, the 2007 Prius gains standard driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags and front and rear side curtain airbags, which were previously optional.

The new 2007 Prius Touring Edition provides more spirited driving responses due to its European-tuned suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Prius Touring Edition is distinguished externally by the new wheels, a larger rear spoiler, High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps and integrated fog lamps.

Toyota Prius is the most fuel-efficient midsize sedan in America, delivering on the promise of exceptional fuel efficiency without compromising performance, comfort or safety. 2007 Toyota Corolla Matrix -- the Vehicle that started the CUV Trend

07_Matrix_XR.jpg

With its unique blend of sporty styling and practicality, the Toyota Corolla Matrix crossover utility vehicle (CUV) has become a major influence on modern compact car design. The five-door Matrix models provide exemplary fuel efficiency, too, with EPA estimated mileage ratings as high as 30 mpg city and 36 mpg highway in models with the five-speed manual transmission.

Matrix is available in two model grades – Standard, and the XR with enhanced content. The XRS model has been discontinued for 2007, as has the four-wheel drive option for other models.

Matrix has been especially successful at reaching younger buyers because it provides such a compelling value in a spirited and uniquely styled package. At the same time, its versatility and excellent fuel efficiency have made Matrix popular with buyers of all ages.

Toyota designed the Matrix at Calty Design Research, its design studio in Newport Beach, Calif. “Edge-web” detailing blends sharply creased surfaces with rounded web-like contours to create strong, flowing character lines. The three-window profile gives the driver excellent outward visibility. Inside, Matrix presents a sporty environment, highlighted by an instrument panel featuring Optitron gauges set in cylindrical, chrome-rimmed housings.

Toyota Corolla Wins Customers With Dependability, Fuel Efficiency And Value

07_Corolla_LE.jpg

The fuel efficient Toyota Corolla enters its 37th year in America as one of the industry's most trusted cars. The roomy, comfortable 2007 Corolla is rated an EPA estimated 41 miles per gallon in highway driving.

Consistently ranked among the best in reliability and dependability, Corolla is the world's best-selling car, with more than 30 million sold over four decades. A key to Corolla's ongoing success in the U.S. market is that it has always appealed to a broad spectrum of buyers. The 2007 model continues that tradition, with three model grades offered: the very well equipped CE, the sporty S and the top-of-the-line LE. The XRS model has been discontinued for 2007.

Corolla has become the world's favorite compact car by exceeding customers' expectations for value and quality in this segment. Corolla is also an enjoyable, comfortable car to drive, with low ownership costs thanks to outstanding reliability and fuel efficiency, as well as excellent resale value. The Corolla name has always been synonymous with excellent fuel efficiency. The 2007 Corolla line offers EPA-estimated fuel mileage ratings of 32 mpg city/41 mpg highway with the standard five-speed manual transmission or 30/38 mpg with the optional four-speed electronically controlled automatic.

Corolla also offers advanced safety for its segment, including the optional Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system available in LE and S models in conjunction with the optional automatic transmission. VSC helps maintain directional control during cornering by manipulating engine torque and individual wheel-braking influence when it detects tire slippage. The VSC option also includes Brake Assist, plus traction control that can help reduce tire slippage during acceleration.

Nissan starts building 2007 Altima Starts at Smyrna Plant

07_altima.jpg

Production of The Fourth Generation of Nissan's Best-selling Model Rolls Off the Line

Employees from Nissan North America’s corporate headquarters joined the manufacturing team in Smyrna to celebrate the start of production of the company’s best-selling model in the U.S. market: the Nissan Altima. The first 2007 production model rolled off the assembly line today.

Manufacturing Vice President Bill Krueger presented an oversized key to Marketing Director Fred Suckow at the mid-morning ceremony, symbolically handing off the all-new Altima from the manufacturing plant to the sales and marketing team. The Altima sedan then drove through a banner stretched across the Trim & Chassis final line.

“The Altima is an important car in the Nissan lineup, and the new model builds on the strengths of the former model,” said Krueger. “We took a lot of actions to assure a high-quality launch. We completed two system trials and two production trials to verify parts, systems and equipment. Dedicated launch teams made the Altima the total focus of a group of managers and production technicians, and we had dedicated trainers on each shift. We installed new equipment in several zones, such as the rear subframe decking device, sunroof assist device and front-end module decking device. And while we were working within all our functional groups, Nissan engineers were also working closely with suppliers to assure their preparedness.

“We’re confident that all these actions and many others will result in a high-quality vehicle that will provide a lot of value for our customers.”

The all-new 2007 Nissan Altima is evolutionary in design, but revolutionary in its platform and hardware while offering new levels of quality feel, enhanced comfort and available convenience features.

Along with its distinctive styling, the fourth-generation Altima is built on the all-new Nissan “D” platform with improved body rigidity and a redesigned suspension.

The new Altima also offers Nissan’s advanced Xtronic CVT™ (Continuously Variable Transmission), a choice of the award-winning VQ-series 3.5-liter V6 or powerful 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engines, and a long list of technology features – including available Intelligent Key with Push Start Ignition, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System, RearView Monitor and an advanced touch-screen navigation system.

In calendar year 2005, Nissan North America sold 255,371 Altimas. Altimas produced in Smyrna are exported to Gulf Coast Countries, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and other countries. In fiscal year 2006, Nissan will export approximately 40,000 Altimas.

Since the production launch of the first Altima on June 11, 1992, the Smyrna Plant has produced 2,448,367 units to date. With the addition of 284,640 units built at Nissan’s vehicle assembly plant in Canton, Miss. – where production started on June 14, 2004 – Nissan has produced 2,733,007 Altimas in North America to date.

The Smyrna Plant employs 6,500 and represents an investment of $2.1 billion. In addition to the Altima, the plant produces the Nissan Maxima, Nissan Xterra, Nissan Pathfinder and Nissan Frontier.

Factsheet: Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV)

01_FCHV.jpg

What is the Toyota FCHV?

The Toyota Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) is based on the popular Toyota Highlander, a five-passenger, mid-size sport utility vehicle. It utilizes the same hybrid technology perfected in the Toyota Prius.

How Does it Work?

The FCHV's fuel cell system features four hydrogen fuel tanks, an electric motor, a nickel-metal hydride battery, and a power control unit. The hydrogen gas is fed into the fuel cell stack where it is combined with oxygen. The electricity produced by this chemical reaction is used to power the electric motor and to charge the battery.

The power control unit decides when to use the battery and when to use the fuel cell stack to power the vehicle, the same mechanism that manages the gasoline engine and battery in the Prius. The fuel cell Toyota has a range of up to 180 miles and a top speed of 96 miles per hour.

New VW ad spot ignores critics, sticks with smash-bang ending

vwvid.jpgNew Spot Featuring Reference to Old Spot Again Ends in Car Wreck

Well, we sure saw that coming.

No, literally. We saw it coming. Just before the two women get broadsided in the new Crispin Porter & Bogusky spot for the VW Passat, we saw the other vehicle. For one second it was in the previous shot, looking fairly benign, but it was clearly headed right for them.

Forshadowed
Plus, duh, you'd have to say the collision was somewhat foreshadowed in the dialogue.

PASSENGER: So they're just driving along talking about whatever and suddenly ... wham.

DRIVER: I know. I saw it.

PASSENGER: I just think maybe they went too far.

DRIVER: I think where they went was "real."

PASSENGER: It was just shocking for the sake of shocking.

DRIVER: Look, you think being in an accident is not a shock? That's why they call it an accident.

PASSENGER: Yeah, but you're watching TV and a commercial comes on ...

Preordained wreck
That's when the SUV slams into them -- which you'd have to be oblivious not to have anticipated, even if you somehow missed the glimpse of the sports ute. In fact, never mind "foreshadowed." This wreck was preordained.

And yet, as the lady says, it's still shocking -- because the collision shot repeats exactly the effect of the commercial the women are discussing: the horrifying suddenness of a real accident ... in an instant. TV usually employs the long, exterior view. Here it's a tight, helpless interior: screeching tires and then that sickening, strangely muted thump-crunch. Then maybe you're dead. Or maybe, if you're as lucky as these women, your car is equipped with side-curtain airbags and you climb out, shaken, to wait for the cops.

Chrysler May Export Cars from China

Germany's Der Spiegel magazine reported Saturday that DaimlerChrysler is close to reaching an agreement to sell Chery-built automobiles in the United States, and that the automaker may later develop and produce cars with Chery, reports Bloomberg.

The German-American automaker had said last year it may export Chinese-made cars in order to cut its labor costs. CEO Dieter Zetsche is cutting production of vehicles in the U.S. in the face of a projected $1.5 billion third quarter loss in the Chrysler division.

Survey Says Gas Prices Impacting Buyer Decisions

According to a new survey by J.D. Power and Associates, several months of high gas prices have taken a toll on consumers shopping for new vehicles, who are now more frequently citing gas mileage as a reason for rejecting a vehicle.

Poor gas mileage is now the third-most frequently cited reason for rejecting a vehicle following "total price too high" and "total monthly payment too high." The study finds that nearly 17 percent of new vehicle shoppers cite gas mileage as a reason for vehicle rejection -- up from 13 percent in 2002. SUVs and pickup trucks are among the highest rejected vehicles due to gas mileage.

Honda will Launch Diesel Sedan in 2009

Honda announced plans to launch a sedan -- probably an Accord -- powered by a "superclean," four-cylinder diesel system in the U.S. by 2009, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The system consists of a diesel engine Honda has introduced in Europe, as well as devices that significantly reduce the polluting gases given off by diesel combustion. Honda is hoping that this system will win over American consumers who have long avoided diesel vehicles.

The new diesel system surrenders little horsepower or fuel economy. Honda is also working on a bigger V6 diesel system and will strive to offer diesel engines as a powertrain option in bigger vehicles such as the Acura MDX and the Honda Pilot, said Honda's CEO Takeo Fukui. "Gasoline-electric hybrids work well in small cars," said Fukui. "But with vehicles bigger than the Accord, we think superclean diesels are a much better way to go."

How Hybrid Vehicles Work

Gas And Electric Combine For Incredible Mileage

Mention "hybrid" to people not familiar with current trends in automotive technology and the first thoughts that come to mind might well be of some sort of genetically engineered corn that gives more bushels per acre. But in vehicular terms, hybrid refers to a powertrain that combines two different methods of propulsion, each augmenting the other in a way that enhances the strengths and minimizes the shortcomings of each.

In very simple terms, a hybrid powertrain, as used today in a variety of applications, utilizes an engine that's burning a fossil fuel, combined with an electrical system made up of a motor, generator and battery. Depending upon the individual system, the gasoline engine may be able to drive the vehicle by itself, or it may drive the electrical system only (which in turn will actually drive the vehicle). Or the electrical system might be able to drive the vehicle by itself, or both systems may be able to work together to varying degrees.

The current automotive internal combustion piston engine has been developed to an impressively high state of refinement. It delivers power levels, meets emissions and fuel economy requirements, and satisfies customer demands for smoothness, quietness, reliability and cost that would have been considered unthinkable just a few years ago. Its emissions levels and fuel consumption can still be improved upon—although, admittedly, not by a lot. Plus there's a basic problem that faces almost every vehicle on the road: Each of them has an engine that is, most of the time, larger than it needs to be.

Jihad commecial for car dealer draws protest

CINCINNATI - A car commercial proclaiming a jihad on the U.S. auto market and offering “Fatwa Fridays” with free swords for the kids is offensive and should not be aired, Muslim leaders said on Sunday.

The radio advertisement for the Dennis Mitsubishi car dealership in Columbus, Ohio, has “a whole jihad theme,” said Adnan Mirza, director of the Columbus office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

“They are planning on launching a jihad on the automotive market and their representatives would be wearing burqas ... ,” Mirza said. “They mentioned the pope in there and also about giving rubber swords out to the kiddies -- really just reprehensible-type comments.”

Details of the radio ad, which has not yet been broadcast, have been reported in the local media, but officials at the dealership declined to comment about the content of the radio spot.

Two employees at the dealership said they had been deluged with calls about the commercial.
“The ad has has never been released, it is not out for public listening,” said one employee who declined to give his name. He would not say whether the dealership had changed its mind about airing the commercial.

Toyota RAV4 Gains Important Safety Feature For 2007

07_RAV4_Sport.jpg

The all-new third-generation RAV4 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) introduced for 2006 gains an important safety system as standard equipment for 2007. Driver and front passenger front-seat-mounted side airbags, along with first and second row roll-sensing side curtain airbags, are now standard (formerly optional).

With significantly improved performance from an available V6 engine, plus enhancements to overall refinement, the larger, more powerful RAV4 is redefining a segment it essentially created a decade ago. The new-generation RAV4 is a logical step up from the popular second-generation model, providing more room from a larger design that is still compact, highly maneuverable and fuel-efficient.

The 2007 RAV4 is offered in three distinct grades – Standard, performance-oriented Sport and top-of-the-line Limited – and with a choice between two engines and either two- or four-wheel-drive. All grades offer a 269-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine, making RAV4 the most powerful vehicle in its segment. Equipped exclusively with a gated-shift five-speed automatic transmission, the V6 RAV4 models offer fuel efficiency comparable with much less powerful four- and six-cylinder competitors.

"Toyota pioneered the car-based compact SUV segment with the first RAV4, and now this type of vehicle is the overwhelmingly most popular choice in the segment," said Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor Sales executive vice president. "The third-generation RAV4 adds performance without penalty at the pump, and adds room without sacrificing the nimble nature that has made the RAV4 so successful since its introduction."

Toyota Sequoia Gains New Safety System For 2007

07_Sequoia_Ltd_4WD.jpg

The Toyota Sequoia full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV), recently named the quality leader in its segment, gains standard driver- and front-passenger seat-mounted side airbags and two-row curtain side airbags for 2007. These features previously had been optional.

Showcasing the brand's renowned quality, the Sequoia was named the "Highest Ranked Large Multi-Activity Vehicle (MAV)" in the 2006 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality StudySM.

Like all Toyota SUVs, the Sequoia comes standard with the benefits of the STAR SAFETY SYSTEM™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and traction control (TRAC), an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. (See page 2 for details.)

The eight-passenger Sequoia offers greater rear cargo capacity than either the Chevrolet Tahoe or the Ford Expedition. Minor trim changes for 2007 include a new color-keyed grille insert on the SR5 model and chrome rear view mirrors on the top-of-the-line Limited grade.

Sequoia is powered by the 4.7-liter i-Force V8 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. Equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), the Sequoia V8 produces 273 horsepower and 314 lb-ft. of peak torque. The Sequoia is EPA-certified as an ultra-low emission vehicle (ULEV).

Toyota Sienna Gets Power Infusion For 2007

07_SiennaXLE.jpg

The Toyota Sienna family van gets an infusion of power for 2007 with a new, 266-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine that replaces the previous 215-horsepower 3.3-liter V6. The new engine significantly improves acceleration and merging performance for Sienna, yet returns fuel economy comparable to the previous engine.

The 2007 Sienna's DOHC 3.5L V6 produces 245 lb.-ft. peak torque at 4,700 rpm. A Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i) system operates on both the intake and exhaust valves to ensure optimal performance and efficiency at all engine speeds.

The V6 is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with intelligence (ECT-i). Impressive acceleration makes the Sienna a capable everyday driving vehicle with the power to merge with confidence. Fuel economy remains excellent for the class, with EPA city/highway gas mileage estimates of 19/26 mpg for front-wheel-drive models and 18/23 mpg for all-wheel-drive models.

Sienna remains one of the few mini-vans to offer an all-wheel drive option. The AWD system employs a center differential to divide engine power 50:50 front and rear. Wheel slippage at either set of wheels automatically transfers more power to the opposite wheels to help keep the Sienna moving forward.

Toyota's Dynamic Laser Cruise Control

Dynamic Laser Cruise Control (DLCC) is offered in select Toyota and Lexus models, taking cruise control systems to the next level. Using the latest technology, the DLCC system is designed to help control the distance between the vehicle and the vehicle ahead based on the driving lanes, the vehicle traveling ahead, and vehicle speed.

DLCC has two cruise control modes: constant speed and vehicle-to-vehicle control. The cruise control switch is used for switching between the two modes. Cruise control in the constant speed mode is identical to a conventional type cruise control system. The DLCC starts in the vehicle-to-vehicle control mode, which immediately recognizes and determines the lane in which the driver and the vehicle ahead are traveling. This enables the system to maintain the pre-set vehicle-to-vehicle distance in accordance with the speed of the vehicle ahead.

Vehicle Stability Control Expands Throughout The Toyota Lineup

The Toyota Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system was first introduced in select Lexus models in 1997. The system was designed to help reduce lateral skids caused by sudden steering inputs or abrupt changes in road conditions. Since its introduction, VSC has become available on a wide range of Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles.

Past studies have concluded that a significant number of one-car accidents resulting in serious injury are caused by lateral skidding conditions, and loss of driver control, often due to sudden steering input or changing road conditions on curves.

The VSC system is designed to help reduce lateral skids through active control of the brakes and engine output, such as when the driver steers abruptly, or when turning on slippery road surfaces. VSC works in concert with anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control (TRAC) systems help prevent straight-line skids and lateral skids.

For 2007, the new Lexus GS 350 enters the market as a more powerful version of 2006's newly introduced third-generation GS 300. It joins the GS 430 in Lexus' mid-luxury sedan offerings. The 2007 GS 350 builds upon its predecessor model's already significant levels of performance, advanced luxury and intuitive technology, and it becomes the most powerful six-cylinder model in its segment. The handling performance of the 2007 GS 430's potent 4.3-liter V8 is further optimized by a newly available active stabilizer system that automatically and seamlessly counteracts body sway to improve cornering performance.

"The 2007 GS models epitomize the direction of the Lexus brand, offering more emotional design and remarkably higher performance without compromising the luxurious comfort, attention to detail and quality that continue to rank Lexus as the leader in the luxury category," said Bob Carter, Lexus group vice president and general manager.

The 2007 GS 350 replaces the previous 245-horsepower 3.0-liter engine with a new 303-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, which delivers blistering performance with zero-to-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds, as well as exemplary fuel efficiency for the class. Lexus through the years

For newcomers to the automotive scene, the acceptance of Lexus as one of the leading lights among builders of luxury automobiles has become so complete that observers can be forgiven for thinking that Lexus has been present in this group for many decades.

Of course, that isn't true. To the considerable surprise of nearly everyone involved, Lexus grew into the player it is today from a seed cautiously planted in 1983, just 23 years ago.

That's when officials at Toyota in Japan, from which the Lexus nameplate springs, decided that the time was right to launch their own line of luxury automobiles, taking on the giants who had always owned that territory—Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Cadillac and BMW. From the first LS 400 and ES 250 sedans launched in 1989, Lexus, had in many respects matched the established luxury players and their high levels of excellence stride for stride.

Nissan to end Toyota hybrid tie-up

Nissan Motor Co. will develop a new hybrid vehicle technology on its own, which would end a joint agreement with Toyota Motor Corp., sources said Friday.

The independently produced low-emission and fuel-efficient models will be released on 2010, the sources said.

In the wake of rising oil prices, demand for hybrid models has grown rapidly, leading Nissan to reconsider its previous stance of cooperating with Toyota on hybrid developments, the sources said.

The new compact car models will be equipped with a lithium-ion battery system and include a plug-in hybrid vehicle that can be recharged at home.

Compared with nickel-hydrogen batteries, which Toyota and Honda Motor Co. have used, the lithium-ion battery has more capacity and can be recharged more quickly.

Nissan and Toyota agreed in 2002 to work together on hybrid vehicle developments. Toyota's hybrid systems will be used in about 100,000 units of Nissan's Altima Hybrid model, which the automaker plans to put on the U.S. market early next year.

However, since Nissan now intends to mass-produce its own models, it is considering using Toyota's systems on just the Altima model sold in the United States.

Toyota likely will agree to Nissan's decision. A representative for Toyota said it would not provide its hybrid systems to Nissan for other models than the Altima unless Nissan requested it to do so.

2007 Lexus ES 350 Sedan Packages More Power, Performance, Luxury and Safety in Bold New Design

2007_ES350.jpg

Lexus has introduced the all-new ES 350 luxury sedan for 2007, the fifth generation of the model that sparked the growth of the entry-luxury segment more than 15 years ago. The 2007 ES 350 belies the term "entry luxury" by offering performance, comfort, and user technology previously associated with prestige-luxury models.

The 2007 ES 350 introduces a rich, contemporary look with its own interpretation of the new Lexus design language. The bold design emphasizes a more dynamic and sculptural direction, revealing a strong family resemblance across the brand's entire sedan lineup. A long hood, pulled-back cabin, short overhangs and short rear deck are characteristic of the new design theme, with a contemporary signature unique to each of the four new-generation Lexus sedan model lines: ES, IS, GS and flagship LS. Dual exhaust with seamless chrome tips add a new performance accent to the ES 350.

Lexus 2008 LS 600h L: World's First Full Hybrid V8 Luxury Sedan

2008_LS600hL.jpg

Joins All-New Fourth-Generation LS 460 and LS 460 L

Unveiled at the 2006 New York International Automobile Show, Lexus' all-new 2008 LS 600h L hybrid luxury sedan is scheduled to arrive in spring 2007. The all-wheel-drive LS 600h L will be the world's first vehicle to feature a full hybrid V8 powertrain.

"The LS 600h L was developed to explore the outer reaches of performance, style and safety," said Bob Carter, Lexus Division group vice president and general manager. "It is a vehicle as efficient and familiar as it is indulgent and advanced, a far-reaching concept, fully developed and fully realized. It is simply in a class by itself."

Lexus Hybrid Drive
Coinciding with the debut of the all-new LS is the introduction of the Lexus Hybrid Drive name, which will be used globally for all Lexus hybrid models. The hybrid-drive system in the LS 600h L builds upon the Lexus legacy established by the RX 400h and GS 450h to combine an all-new five-liter V8 gasoline engine with large, high-output electric motors and a newly designed large-capacity battery pack. This advanced combination will provide the LS 600h L with an unmatched balance of environmental efficiency and performance, furnishing the hybrid with a peak combined output rating of more than 430 horsepower.

2007 Lexus GS 450h Sport Sedan Establishes Performance Hybrid Segment

2007_GS450h.jpg

In 2007, Lexus introduced the GS 450h, the world's first hybrid-powered performance luxury sport sedan. Based on the next-generation GS platform introduced for 2006 and featuring Lexus Hybrid Drive technology, the GS 450h offers V8-like performance with greater fuel efficiency.

With its advanced technology, high performance and indulgent luxury, the rear-wheel-drive 2007 GS 450h is the premium model in the GS series. The GS 450h joins the RX 400h SUV, the world's first luxury hybrid vehicle, in an expanding lineup of hybrid-powered Lexus models that will soon include the LS 600h L hybrid luxury sedan. In addition to boosting performance and fuel efficiency while lowering emissions, Lexus Hybrid Drive technology also further elevates the brand's renowned smooth, quiet operation.

The GS 450h's unique version of the Lexus Hybrid Drive powertrain combines a new 3.5-liter V6 engine with a compact, permanent magnet electric motor—all driving the rear wheels. The hybrid powertrain collectively produces 340 horsepower and can effortlessly accelerate the GS 450h from zero-to-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds. Just as impressive as the GS 450h's acceleration from a stop is how quickly and powerfully torque is delivered during mid-range acceleration. The hybrid system's electric-drive motor delivers maximum torque immediately upon demand. This unique power-delivery characteristic is most noticeable, and most useful, during 30-to-50 mph passing and in traffic-merging maneuvers.

2007_IS_250350.jpg

In their second year on the market, the next-generation Lexus IS 250/350 luxury sport sedans ratchet up both handling performance and comfort with reconfigured standard equipment, option packages, and the ability to disengage the stability and traction control systems. The V6-powered Lexus IS models, which debuted in 2006, combine striking styling with one of the most compelling packages of performance, luxury, and safety in this highly competitive segment.

The 2007 IS line again offers three models, each powered by a new-generation, high-output V6 engine. The rear-wheel-drive IS 350 leads the segment with a 306-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 and can accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. The IS 250 is powered by a 204-horsepower 2.5-liter version of the new V6 and is available as a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive model.

New for 2007, the "X Package" option for the IS rear-wheel-drive models combines sport suspension and five-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels with a boldly styled front-lip spoiler, sport pedals, and illuminated door scuff plates.

A new Premium Package has been made standard for the all-wheel drive IS 250 and optional for the rear-wheel-drive models and includes perforated leather seating trim and heated and ventilated front seats. The comprehensive "Sport" and "Luxury" option packages share much of their content, with the Sport Package also including sport suspension.

Lexus LX 470 Combines Rugged Luxury with Advanced Technology

2007_LX_470.jpg

The Lexus LX 470 pioneered the segment for full-size, full-capability luxury SUVs and continues to lead in technology and quality. Burnishing its long-standing quality reputation, the LX 470 was named highest ranked Large Premium Multi-Activity Vehicle in the 2006 J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality StudySM.

The LX 470 is powered by a sophisticated and smooth 268-horsepower, 4.7-liter V8 and combines a robust chassis with full-time four-wheel drive and a full array of advanced dynamic handling systems.

For 2007, the LX 470 gains a new front-passenger-seat occupant-classification sensor. The sensor signals airbag deployment in an impact depending on whether there is a passenger in the front seat. Front-seat-mounted side airbags and front seat and second row side-curtain airbags, are standard.

"As did other Lexus vehicles, the LX 470 essentially steered its segment by leading it in capability, comfort, versatility and, of course, documented quality," said Bob Carter, Lexus group vice president and general manager. "We are proud that the LX 470 continues to win accolades for quality even with the increased competition."

New Lexus RX 350 Adds Power Plus Technical and Convenience Features for 2007

2007_RX_350.jpg

The new 2007 RX 350, which arrived in dealerships in spring 2006, entered the market as a more powerful version of its best-selling predecessor, the RX 330. The Lexus RX has been the most popular vehicle in the car-based luxury SUV segment that it established in 1998. The 2007 RX 350 introduced a new 270-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 engine that improves both performance and fuel efficiency over the 2006 RX 330's 223-horsepower, 3.3-liter V6.

The RX 350 delivers all-weather performance in both front- and all-wheel-drive models. The 2007 model also gains new luxury and convenience options and additional refinements for enhanced drivability, such as the available factory-installed rear-seat DVD entertainment system, which gains a nine-inch screen for a substantially larger viewing area over the previous seven-inch screen.

Also new for 2007, a direct-type Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) system replaces the previous indirect system and alerts the driver via a warning light on the instrument panel if a significant drop in tire pressure is detected in any of the tires.

Report: Japanese Automakers Spending Estimated $1.7 Billion on New U.S. Plants

Japanese automakers are spending an estimated $1.7 billion in the construction of four new U.S. auto and auto parts manufacturing plants, that are expected to employ an additional 4,680 American workers once all four become fully operational, according to a new report from the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association.

In addition to these new investments, JAMA member companies are spending $382 million in two existing engine plants to increase their manufacturing capacity, according to the report.

Nissan Looks Into Safety Technology

Nissan is developing a technology that could come to the aid of drivers who worry about missing a red light or being hit by cars pulling out of hard-to-see places. The technology is unique compared to efforts from other automakers in that it takes advantage of sensors already in place to monitor traffic congestion in Japan, reports USA Today.

The vehicle-alert system, still in its experimental stage, uses the sensors to detect dangers such as cars unexpectedly zipping out. That information is then beamed into the driver's vehicle. The alert system also warns about upcoming yellow or red lights if the driver isn't slowing down.

Renault-Nissan-GM Talks "Bogged Down"

With a mid-October deadline looming, talks between Renault-Nissan and General Motors on a possible alliance appear to be bogged down, as the two sides have yet to agree on major synergies in purchasing, platform-sharing, and manufacturing capacity, reports The Detroit News.

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has said the combined purchasing power of GM, Renault, and Nissan could save the three companies up to $5 billion per year. However, savings of that magnitude would require the three companies to share some common vehicle platforms and integrate much of their product development process, and GM has yet to fully endorse that level of cooperation, according to the paper. The next meeting of the study teams for the three automakers is set for late this month during the Paris Auto Show, with all sides agreeing that the talks will wrap up by October 15.

California Files Lawsuit Against Automakers Over Global Warming

California Attorney General Bill Lockyer filed a public-nuisance lawsuit on Wednesday against the nation's top six automakers -- General Motors, Toyota, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, Honda and Nissan -- alleging their products release dangerous greenhouse gases and foster global warming.

The automakers named in the suit are responsible for producing 88 percent of the vehicles sold in the U.S. so far this year, reports USA Today. An unspecified amount is being sought by the state for the "billions of dollars in damages" from global warming caused by cars, the suit claims.

In response, Gloria Berquist of the Alliance of Automotive Manufacturers said that the industry has embraced clean diesel, flexible fuels and hybrids and has more than 9 million vehicles on the roads that use one of those advanced technologies. This type of lawsuit requires courts to go beyond their jurisdiction and "opens the door to lawsuits targeting any activity that uses fossil fuel for energy," the Alliance said. A similar lawsuit was filed in 2004 by eight state attorneys general and the city of New York against utilities, alleging that smokestack pollution increases global warming. That lawsuit was dismissed.

Lexus integrates advanced technology in all its vehicles, with a focus on ease of use, more comfort, and more driving pleasure. The brand's reputation for quality applies to every vehicle feature and system, and any technology that the customer contacts must be easy to understand and use.

Performance

Engines That Think Big
All Lexus engines employ continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), which eliminates the compromise between low-end torque and high-rpm horsepower by optimizing valve overlap throughout the engine's speed range, not just at one or two set speeds. The new-generation V6 engines in the Lexus ES 350, RX 350, GS 350 and IS models employ a new Dual VVT-i system that acts on the exhaust valves as well as the intake valves.

The 3.5-liter V6 in the GS 350 and IS 350 models augments port fuel injection with a direct-to-cylinder fuel injection system. The direct injection provides a cooling effect in the cylinders, allowing the higher compression ratio that results in greater efficiency and power and enhanced drivability. All Lexus models are certified as Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles or better (ULEV, ULEV II or SULEV).

Jaguar XK Coupe wins UK TV 2006 car of the year award

UKTV_art.jpgJaguar's XK Coupe has been named 'Car of the Year' and 'Luxury Car of the Year' at the UK TV People Awards 2006. Over 10,000 UK TV viewers voted from a choice of 16 vehicles and chose the new XK as their favourite car overall.

Throughout the week preceding the awards ceremony, viewers watched Formula 1’s Louise Goodman test drive the 16 vehicles on the UK TV channel where she highlighted the various attributes of each car. The vehicles were then divided into four categories for viewers to make their selection. The categories were Sport, Family, Luxury and 4x4.

Jaguar’s UK Managing Director Geoff Cousins, said of the award: "We are delighted that the XK came out top of the bunch in what was an extremely strong and competitive short list. This recognition is especially pleasing as it was voted for by the public. I am also delighted for everyone responsible for the car's production here in the UK; they should all feel very proud that Jaguar came out top."

Loris Vigiani, Production Manager for UK TV said: "The competition was tough but the performance, shape and sheer beauty of the Jaguar XK Coupe obviously won the hearts and minds of the viewing public, beating Volvo, Mercedes and Maserati to win the ‘Luxury’ category; as well as Lotus, BMW and Porsche amongst others to win overall."

Fifth Gear’s Vicki Butler-Henderson and Adrian Simpson hosted the live awards. Viewers were invited to make their choice by text message on their mobile phone or via the UKTV website.

Since the Jaguar XK went on sale in March this year, Jaguar has taken more than 9,000 orders and delivered 5,000 vehicles worldwide. The XK has won eight awards in total since its launch, including 'Car of the Year' at the Auto Express Awards 2006. Prices start at £59,995 for the XK Coupe and £65,995 for the Convertible.

C-Class continues to be the bestseller of the Mercedes-Benz product portfolio

* More than two million C-Class units delivered since March 2000

* Best-selling C-Class in the history of the company

In the year prior to its model change, the C-Class remains the bestseller in the Mercedes-Benz model range. More than two million units have been delivered to customers all around the world since the launch of the current series in March 2000.

That makes today’s lineup of this model — consisting of Sedan, Station Wagon and Sports Coupé the best-selling C-Class in the history of the company.

Dr. Klaus Maier, Executive Vice President Mercedes Car Group with responsibility for sales and marketing, said: “The C-Class has achieved excellent sales over its entire lifecycle and is our best-selling model series. It combines comfort and elegant design with the highest standards of safety and sets the benchmark for the entire mid-sized premium car segment.”

With around 1.4 million units sold since the market launch in May 2000 the C-Class Sedan has continued its predecessors’ success story. Since spring 2001, some 330,000 customers have decided on the Station Wagon.

The Sports Coupé, which joined the model family in spring 2001, has logged up 283,000 sales to date. Germany is the biggest market for the C-Class, accounting for more than 30 percent of global sales. In fact, the C-Class has sold more units here since its market launch in spring 2000 than any of its premium competitors. The second largest market for the C-Class is the USA, which accounts for almost 20 percent of the global sales volume.

Bill would extend gas savings tax break

Two U.S. senators -- Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Bob Bennett (R-UT) -- are proposing a new tax credit of up to $1,860 for buyers of fuel efficient passenger vehicles and light trucks that get 34.5 mpg or 27.5 mpg, respectively.

Appropriately enough, the $1.3-billion-a-year cost of the Wyden-Bennett bill would be financed by repealing an oil industry tax break.

Mazda pledges not to sell vehicles from damaged ship as new

Cougar-Ace-Mazda.jpgMazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced that the Mazda vehicles aboard the car-carrying vessel, Cougar Ace, which ran into trouble on July 23, 2006, off the Alaskan coast, resulting in her listing some 60-plus degrees, will not be sold as new vehicles.

“While we do not, at this time, know the full extent of the damage to vehicles on board , none of the Mazdas will be sold as new”, said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO of MNAO. “It is possible that those vehicles which are undamaged or repairable will be made available for sale as used cars through Mazda’s dealer network in the U.S. and Canada. We will only be in a position to decide on any used car sales once the vessel has been unloaded and each unit comprehensively inspected. Those beyond repair will be immediately scrapped.”

“In the interest of transparency and customer peace of mind, we will post the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) of vehicles destined for sale on our consumer Websites, www.MazdaUSA.com and www.mazda.ca, so that there is no confusion as to which vehicles were on the ship,” added O’Sullivan.

Remember -- booster seats are the safest place for kids in their middle years

booseat.jpgA BOOST FOR BOOSTERS

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the safest way for children between 4 and 8 to travel is in a belt-positioning booster seat.

Sadly, many parents are skipping this important step in their child’s safety, graduating their precious cargo from a child safety seat to an adult safety belt. This can be a dangerous move. A booster seat, if used properly, helps better distribute the forces of a crash to the strongest parts of the skeleton: the hips, ribs, back and shoulders.

A couple key reasons families should invest in a booster seat:

1.A booster seat raises a child on the vehicle seat so that his or her seated height is more like that of an adult, allowing the lap and shoulder safety belts to fit more properly. When fitted properly, the lap belt lies low and flat across a child’s upper thighs, encouraging belt loading on the bony pelvis rather than on the soft abdomen; the shoulder belt lies across the clavicle and rib cage.

2.Booster seats also encourage more upright seating because, for example, the bottom cushion of a belt-positioning booster is shorter than the vehicle seat, allowing a child’s knees to bend comfortably at the edge of the booster.

2007 LINCOLN MKZ DEBUTS UNDER $30,000: A FRESH DESIGN, MORE POWER, AND AVAILABLE AWD

* The new 2007 Lincoln MKZ is the latest example of Ford’s Way Forward commitment to deliver greater value to consumers through straightforward pricing, new features and an extended powertrain warranty.
* The new Lincoln MKZ midsize luxury sedan gives customers entry into the Lincoln brand at under $30,000.
* Powered by a new fuel-efficient 263 hp 3.5L V-6 engine, the Lincoln MKZ starts at $29,890 for FWD and $31,765 for AWD models, including destination and delivery.
* Lincoln MKZ is the brand’s first all-wheel drive car and one of four new 2007 Lincoln models entering the marketplace.

Lincoln is building on the success of its strong-selling Zephyr mid-size sedan with the introduction of the 2007 Lincoln MKZ – a five-passenger luxury sedan that boasts a refined look, a new, more powerful engine, and the confidence of available all-wheel drive. The new Lincoln MKZ features a starting manufacturers suggested retail price (MSRP) of $29,890 for front-wheel drive and $31,765 for all-wheel drive models.

“The new Lincoln MKZ is moving Lincoln to a modern vision of American luxury,” says Al Giombetti, president, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. “It enters the market from a position of strength, following the outstanding success of the Zephyr. It achieved the best performance by a Lincoln nameplate ever with its second-in-segment showing in the 2006 JD Power Initial Quality Study. Its hallmark Lincoln craftsmanship was honored with Ward’s 2006 Best Premium Interior Car Award. It also has attracted a younger, more diverse customer to Lincoln and helped position the brand for growth. Nearly half of Lincoln Zephyr customers are new to Lincoln.

Car tips for a safe school year

It’s back to school for many children, and that means a lot of time spent in the vehicle traveling from home to school and from school to home. Often, younger siblings are along for the ride.

Help keep everyone safe by following these car safety tips, provided by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, along with State Farm Insurance:

1. Choose a child safety seat that fits your child’s age, height and weight
2. Children under 13 should always sit in the back seat
3. Never place an infant in a rear-facing seat in the front seat with an active air bag
4. Use a LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system — available in all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles — to anchor the child safety seat tightly to the vehicle seat
5. Always use the top tether of a forward-facing safety seat
6. If an older child must ride in the front seat, move the seat back as far as it will go, away from the air bag
7. Move to a belt-positioning booster seat when the child has grown too tall or too heavy for a child safety seat with internal harnesses, until they are 8 years old or 4 feet, 9 inches tall
8. Move to an adult safety belt when the shoulder belt lies across the chest, not the neck or face, and the lap belt is snug across the thighs, not the stomach
9. Lap-only belts can be used to install child safety seats but should never be used with a booster seat and preferably not for children big enough to use the safety belt alone
10. Read the car owner’s manual to learn its safety features, especially in a used or rental car

Never transport more children than there are safety belts in your vehicle.

Ford hires a money guy

Ford announced yesterday the hiring of board member John R.H. Bond to advise Executive Chairman Bill Ford on "financial and other matters," reports The Detroit News. Bond is expected to work with Ford primarily in the 1 ½ days before or after the company's seven scheduled board meetings.

There is speculation in the British press that Bond could play a role in selling off Ford's British assets. Ford has said publicly it is looking for a buyer for its Aston Martin brand, but last week the automaker said neither Jaguar nor Land Rover is currently for sale.

Ford Freestyle earns top safety ratings

07FSTYL.jpg

The Ford Freestyle crossover has earned the highest available crash test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The Ford Freestyle earned the highest possible five star rating in both the government's frontal and side impact crash test modes. And in recent IIHS testing, the 2006 Freestyle, with optional side air bags, earned the Institute's highest side impact rating. A standard three row Safety Canopy™ side air bag system with rollover sensor provides additional protection not only in certain side collisions, but in rollover events as well.

Freestyle previously earned the Insurance Institute's “best pick” designation in frontal offset crash test performance. Following its 40-m.p.h. offset frontal barrier crash test, IIHS noted that Freestyle’s occupant compartment experienced minimal intrusion by maintaining its integrity very well – an essential factor in helping to protect vehicle occupants in a frontal crash.

Ford making a push on fall TV

MKX_TV.jpgSeptember is one of those turning-point months. It’s the beginning of the fall season and of the school year for many youngsters. September also launches the 2007 automotive model year and the fall TV season. The coming together of those latter two events is foremost on the mind of Myles Romero, Global Brand Entertainment director, Ford Motor Company.

Romero is charged with placing Ford products in TV shows and movies, working with studio directors out of his Hollywood office. He has placed products in hit shows such as “24” and “Desperate Housewives.” This season, Ford products will appear in several new series, such as “Brothers and Sisters” on ABC and “Smith,” starring Ray Liotta, on CBS.

“Having vehicle integration is essential to Ford’s overall marketing and communication message,” says Romero, “because it helps us showcase our vehicles’ bold design attributes and other important attributes like safety and environmental technology. Having a character drive a hybrid not only says something about the character, but something about Ford as well.”

Ford goes sledding for safety

fdservosled.jpgWhen a safety engineer crash tests a car, it’s fast, it's loud – and it's expensive.

A typical vehicle development program might crash several pre-production cars, and when you take into account that prototype vehicles are virtually hand-built and cost around $100,000 each, the truth quickly emerges: Crash testing ain’t cheap!

In the fall of 2005, Ford commissioned the Servo-Hydraulic Crash Simulator, a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that’s reducing the time and cost to research, design and build a new car or truck. Located inside Ford’s Safety Innovation Lab (SIL) in Dearborn, the Servo Sled is the most capable crash simulator of its type in the world.

“I’ve worked on a number of programs where we’ve crashed several early prototype vehicles,” says Matthew Makowski, Crash Safety Supervisor for the 2008 Ford Escape. “With the Servo Sled, along with other analytical tools, we’ve completely eliminated that step to save time and money.”

The Servo sled builds on the basic principle of the Hyge sled, a crash test simulator Ford Motor Company has used for over 40 years. The Hyge and Servo sleds each sit inside a long corridor about the width of two-lane highway and about 50 yards long. A track runs the length of the corridor with the sled on top of it. On top of the sled sits a buck, which is an accurate representation of the interior of the vehicle (seats, instrument panel, windshield, airbags, seat belts, etc.) that’s going to be tested. Crash test dummies are positioned in the buck.

Texas auto writers help Ford build ultimate sport truck

FX2Hero.jpgIt’s a known fact that pickup truck owners are rabid when it comes to personalizing their vehicles. Research has shown that more than 70 percent of new truck owners spend, on average, nearly $1,500 on aftermarket accessories in the first year of ownership.

Ford already offers America’s best-selling truck thanks to the widest, most diverse lineup that includes more than one million F-150 factory variations – such as Harley-Davidson™, FX4 off-road, FX2 Sport street and upscale King Ranch models – to feed the growing demand for personal customization. Ford also offers a host of Genuine Ford Accessories and Ford Racing Performance Parts (FRPP) specifically designed to help truckers personalize the appeal and boost the performance of their trucks.

The new project F-150 – a 2007 FX2 Sport with performance, appearance and in-vehicle entertainment and telematics modifications – takes the concept in a new direction by allowing customers to build trucks to their own specifications with dealer-installed Ford parts and accessories.

"The new F-150 FX2 Sport is another example of how Ford is expanding its truck leadership by listening to our customers and delivering bold, American products,” says Christine Feuell, director, Ford Vehicle Personalization. “The new FX2 Sport builds on the F-150 FX4 off-road model by offering custom performance looks – inside and out – in a more affordable two-wheel-drive model.

General Motors North American Facilities Cut Energy Use; Add Renewable Energy Sources

Washington, D.C. -- As a result of the company's commitment to renewable energy sources and conservation efforts, General Motors reduced its energy use by 25 percent and added solar and landfill gas as energy sources at its North American facilities over the past five years.

"General Motors has a corporate commitment to make our vehicles and our facilities energy efficient, and we have a long history of energy reduction efforts at our plants," David Skiven, executive director, GM Worldwide Facilities Group, said Friday in a keynote address at the World Energy Engineering Conference in Washington, D.C.

GM is one of the leading users of renewable energy in the North American manufacturing sector, with renewable energy sources representing about 2 percent of its energy use.

These energy strategies are part of an overall program that has enabled GM to reduce its energy use from 94 trillion BTUs in 2002, to an expected 72.5 trillion BTUs by the end of the year in GM's North American region.

GM's renewable energy portfolio includes:

Mercedes lauds ESP mandate

Mercedes-Benz Safety Innovation Promises To Reduce Accidents Dramatically

WASHINGTON, DC – The Federal government announced today that ESP® stability control, a safety system pioneered by Mercedes-Benz, will be required on all future cars. In making the announcement, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) cited its analysis showing conclusively that cars equipped with stability control are 35 percent less likely to be involved in a collision. Additionally, sport utility vehicles with stability control are involved in 67 percent fewer accidents than SUVs without the system. SUVs usually have a higher center of gravity, and ESP has been found to be especially effective in reducing rollovers.

NHTSA analyzed more than 40,000 collisions over a period of six years, focusing on similar vehicles with and without stability control. The dramatic results include similar reductions in fatal accidents as well. ESP-equipped cars had 30 percent fewer fatal crashes, and sport utility vehicles with ESP were 63 percent less likely to be in a deadly collision.

German designer opts for the Mercedes R-Class

rclasspromo.jpg

Whether it be for a rock band, a designer or a basketball trainer, the unique vehicle concept that underpins the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is designed to meet the particular needs of modern people in the modern world.

The touring SUV provides an exemplary level of ride comfort for the driver, front passenger and rear passengers. This is why the Rolling Stones used the R Class as a shuttle on last year's "A Bigger Bang" tour in the US. Designer and entrepreneuse Jette Joop also plumped for the R-Class because "most of all, I am enthralled by the vehicle's extravagant, exciting design, its high level of practicality and its spaciousness".

Ford's Save the Mustang program wins Interior Dept. award

savemuist.jpg

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Thanks to an innovative program championed by Ford Motor Company, thousands of wild horses with an uncertain future will now be placed in long-term care to live out their lives in bucolic preserves throughout the country. Today, Ford is recognized as the 2006 Outstanding Take Pride Supporter by the U.S. Department of the Interior and Take Pride in America for the company’s partnership in the “Save the Mustangs” program.

Save the Mustangs, established in May 2005 by Ford in collaboration with the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Take Pride in America, builds public awareness for the plight of America’s wild horses and helps fund their adoption by non-profit sanctuaries. In little more than one year, the program has raised funds to support the adoption of 2,000 wild horses, and has educated more than one million visitors through an informational website, www.savethemustangs.org.

“Ford is honored to be the recognized among the many generous Americans who are committed to preserving our nation’s land and wildlife,” said Ziad Ojakli, Ford Group Vice President - Corporate Affairs. “For over 40 years the Mustang has been an important icon for Ford. This award recognizes our successful partnership with the BLM and Take Pride to help preserve this American legend.”

Celebrating a vintage year: Fifty years of success for Volvo Car International Customer Sales

volvint.jpg

Collecting a new car directly from Swedish carmaker Volvo is a way of buying a Volvo that has proved popular among customers such as diplomats and tourists. And this year, Volvo Cars sales company VCIC celebrates 50 years of successful business in the area.

It all began when certain people at Volvo became aware of the ‘love affair’ between American diplomats, military personnel and tourists and Scandinavia. Göteborg was home to an unknown carmaker and the company’s attractive P120 (Amazon) model was proving a popular Swedish ‘souvenir’ among foreign visitors.

The year was 1956 and Volvo was the first among its competitors to discover that it could sell cars profitably to international customers.

However, the company first had to solve the relevant customs clearance, tax and registration issues:

“The cars had to driven to Norway or Denmark for registration, then back to Sweden for shipment,” recalls Torben Eckardt, CEO of the VCIC (Volvo Car International Customer Sales) sales company.

Since then, the business has expanded at an increasing rate, with sales growing by 5-10 percent annually in recent years.

Nostalgia for muscle cars

cudate.jpgIn 1991, shallow pockets forced Bill Wiemann to sell his 12 muscle cars. He got $200,000 for a collection that included a '69 Plymouth 6-Pack Road Runner, a '70 Dodge Charger and a '70 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda (think the General Lee from "The Dukes of Hazzard"). But the loss hurt. So much so that after making a killing in commercial real estate, he bought back the cars, one by one, at auctions.

This time, however, Wiemann grabbed limited editions and convertibles, spending more than he cares to total. Earlier this year, he paid $2.16 million just for the 'Cuda (it cost $5,200 new in 1970). It's now boarded with his other prizes in a garage with a transparent door he can gaze through from his bedroom; the cars are treated to classic rock because, he says, it makes them happy. "Some people love art and think nothing of popping $20 million on a painting," says Wiemann, 45, of Phoenix. "For me, it's muscle cars."

While the Detroit of 2006 struggles to survive, the fast bruisers cranked out by the Motor City in its 1970s halcyon days now help fuel the $17.8 billion-a-year classic-car business. That's up about 25 percent in the past year alone, say car insurers, dealers and restoration experts, thanks mainly to the echo effect of televising major auctions. As many as 400,000 collector cars, worth about $14 billion, traded pink slips in the past 12 months; additional revenue comes from after-market parts sales and service, which now tops out at $100 per hour. "What's driving this market are boomers who either owned the cars when they were kids or had always dreamed of owning a particular car they couldn't afford," says McKeel Hagerty, president of Hagerty Insurance, the nation's largest classic-car insurer. "Now they have the money."

German motoring fans vote Jaguar tops

jagdl.jpgLeading German motoring magazine Auto Zeitung has published its 2006 Quality Report and Jaguar has come out on top over strong competition from European and Japanese luxury car makers. More than 30,000 readers took part in the survey where they rated 33 brands overall for reliability, product quality and service.

Jaguar’s first place position in a survey conducted at the heart of leading luxury car makers is testament to the ongoing dedication to quality in both the product and the service network. The same Auto Zeitung survey on quality ranked Jaguar in 18th place in 2004 and in 5th place in 2005.

Managing Director of Jaguar Cars Bibiana Boerio commented: “We are delighted with the results of this survey particularly as the votes came from members of the German public. Getting the top spot reinforces what we already know about the high standards of quality found in our cars from the prestigious J.D. Power survey conducted in the US. In 2005, Jaguar was second for quality meaning it was the highest ranked European nameplate, while our Halewood plant where the X-TYPE is built won the Gold Plant Quality Award in Europe.”

Chevrolet To Launch World's Largest Fuel Cell Vehicle Fleet

ChevroletEquinoxfc.jpg

More Than 100 to Debut in 2007 in First Meaningful Market Test of Fuel Cell Vehicles

SAN DIEGO – General Motors committed to building the world’s largest fuel cell vehicle fleet today by announcing its next-generation fuel cell vehicle – the Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell.

GM will build more than 100 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles and will begin placing them with customers in the fall of 2007, as part of a comprehensive deployment plan dubbed “Project Driveway." Designed to gain comprehensive learnings on all aspects of the customer experience, Project Driveway constitutes the first meaningful market test of fuel cell vehicles anywhere. A variety of drivers – in differing driving environments – will operate these vehicles and refuel with hydrogen in three geographic areas: California, the New York metropolitan area and Washington D.C.

“General Motors is demonstrating its commitment to hydrogen fuel cells as the answer for taking the automobile out of the environmental debate and reducing our dependence on petroleum," said Larry Burns, GM vice president, research & development and strategic planning. “The Equinox Fuel Cell is powered by GM’s most advanced fuel cell propulsion system to date, and demonstrates an important milestone on our pathway to automotive-competitive fuel cell propulsion technology development."

Enabled by GM’s fourth-generation fuel cell propulsion system, the Equinox Fuel Cell is a fully-functional crossover vehicle, engineered for 50,000 miles of life. Importantly, the Equinox Fuel Cell is able to start and operate in sub-freezing temperatures during its 50,000-mile life. It is expected to meet all applicable 2007 U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and is equipped with a long list of standard safety features including driver and passenger frontal air bags and roof rail side-impact air bags; anti-lock braking system (ABS); StabiliTrak stability enhancement technology and OnStar, while providing all of the environmental benefits of hydrogen fuel cell technology.

"The Equinox Fuel Cell is a real-world vehicle with real-world performance," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. “The fuel cell technology is seamlessly integrated into a uniquely styled crossover vehicle that is distinctively Chevrolet. The Equinox Fuel Cell joins Chevrolet’s family of advanced gas-saving and alternative fuel vehicles."

The Project Driveway market test will provide comprehensive insight into all aspects of the customer experience, including reaction to the exciting, smooth and quiet performance of a fuel cell vehicle, and refueling with clean hydrogen gas. “These learnings will directly influence future fuel cell vehicle generations and ultimate market acceptance," Peper said. "With Chevrolet being GM’s global volume brand, it makes sense that Chevy will lead GM’s fuel cell vehicle commercialization charge."

Hummer On The Scene For First Responders

hummerspond1.jpg

DALLAS – In emergency response, every second counts. It’s why the nation’s first responders choose a vehicle that can get them to the scene of an emergency quickly and safely, regardless of the terrain or weather. It’s also why HUMMER is first on the scene for these brave men and women with the exclusive First Responder package on the capable, midsize H3.

Between October 1 and December 31, 2006, when an active member of the fire and rescue community – volunteer or career firefighter or emergency response personnel associated with a fire association – purchases or leases a new HUMMER H3, the vehicle will include the HUMMER First Responder package at no additional cost.

The HUMMER First Responder package includes the purchaser’s choice of either an emergency signal package from Whelen Engineering Inc. (whelen.com) or Federal Signal (federalsignal.com) valued at up to $2,500, or a black wraparound brushguard and lower grille-mounted off-road lights.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 95 percent of the nation’s volunteer firefighters are in rural departments where the go-anywhere capability of the H3 combined with its size and efficiency makes the H3 the ideal emergency response vehicle.

An example of the HUMMER H3 equipped with the First Responder package will be first shown to the emergency response community in the GM display at the Fire-Rescue International 2006 show, September 15-16, 2006, in Dallas.

Roughly the same length as a midsize family sedan, H3 delivers HUMMER’s best-in-class all-terrain capability, like the ability to ford two feet of water or climb a 16-inch obstacle. And with a responsive 242-horsepower Vortec inline five-cylinder engine, turning radius comparable to a compact sedan and fuel economy ratings as high as 20 miles per gallon, the H3 comfortably navigates city traffic making it just as refined on-road, as it is capable off-road.

GM Statement on Electronic Stability Control

Attributable to Bob Lange, Executive Director, Structure and Safety Integration, in response to new Fed rules

"General Motors supports rulemaking on electronic stability control and we commend Administrator Nason for moving quickly on the issue.

"As evidence of ESC effectiveness grew, we committed in January 2005 to make ESC standard in all our retail products by the end of the decade. The technology is on about half our products today and will be standard on our new Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks this fall.

"Getting the public familiar with how StabiliTrak works has been a focus of a nationwide safety tour this summer in which we have offered hundreds of demonstration ride and drives. Almost to a person, people are amazed at what this technology does.

"Today's announcement is proposed rulemaking open to comment. We will adjust our timing as needed to satisfy a final rule when issued".

Falling oil prices, brightening economy

Falling energy prices are brightening the nation's economic picture. Inflation slowed last month and is cooling this month as tumbling oil prices pull down the cost of gasoline. Analysts said yesterday that the decline, assuming it holds, may mark a turning point after many months in which surging energy costs helped drive up other prices, eating into workers' wage gains, crimping consumer spending and fanning fears of a recession.

Dodge created four Firearrow concept cars in 1953-1954 to help generate consumer interest, although the concept was never placed into production. The two cars up for sale are the second and the fourth vehicles produced from designs by Virgil Exner.

According to a Barrett-Jackson statement, the Firearrow II is a yellow roadster, while the black Firearrow IV is a two-seat convertible with roll-up windows, a folding top, jump seat, radio and full instrumentation.

Honda working to extract ethanol from inedible plants

Japanese automaker Honda is working with a Japanese research group on developing ways to make ethanol from inedible plants.

Ethanol is usually extracted from corn and sugarcane. Honda and the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth have reportedly developed a way to make the fuel from leaves and stalks of plants.

Honda had recently announced in June that they are planning to introduce vehicles that run on ethanol in Brazil by 2007.

The company claims that the ethanol produced from inedible plants will produce 70-90% less carbon dioxide than gasoline. They were one of the first automakers to sell autos powered by a combination of gasoline and electricity and they now want to become a leading player in the segment of cars which runs on ethanol.

Toyota, Sony recalls shock Japan's pride

TOKYO -- Twice last month, Toshihiro Nikai, trade minister of Japan, wrote to Sony, the electronics company, ordering it to report on quality-control improvements after back-to-back recalls of faulty laptop batteries. Such orders are unusual enough, but this was also the first time one had ever been issued to Sony, long a leader in manufacturing excellence.

Sony promised to comply.

"This is very rare," said Atsuo Hirai, assistant chief at the Trade Ministry's information product safety section.

Rarer still was that the Transport Ministry issued similar orders a few weeks earlier to Toyota, another paragon of Japanese quality marred by recent recalls.

Quality problems at Toyota and Sony, Japan's two proudest corporate names, have created a national stir. A sense of unease has crept through corporate boardrooms and government ministries, and even to the mom-and- pop stores in neighborhood shopping districts.

The woes of Toyota and Sony have brought to a boil long-simmering concerns here about quality problems at Japanese companies. In another disturbing reminder, Canon said Tuesday that it would inspect and provide free replacement parts for 1.87 million personal copiers worldwide because of a risk some might catch fire.

Anxiety has been growing in recent years that Japan could be losing its once-vaunted tradition of craftsmanship, and the famously workaholic attitudes that used to buttress it, many economists and historians say. It does not help that this is happening as South Korea, China and other Asian rivals are breathing down Japan's neck.

Concerns have reached the point that some companies are now taking steps to train workers and nurture skills. Educators also publicly fret about a decline in Japan's work ethic, prompting many school districts to retool their educational approach to strengthen discipline.

"Toyota and Sony have been a wake-up call that something is amiss in Japan," said Takamitsu Sawa, an economics professor at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. "Everyone is looking to find where Japan went wrong."

Toyota's creepy jumping robot leg

roboleg.jpgJapanese scientists have successfully invented a robot leg capable of leaping. Automotive giant Toyota explained that the leg could jump and land on its own foot again, adding this was a turning point in producing human-like robots.

The autonomous leg constitutes a knee and hip attached to a jointed foot that can move like a human leg. A spokesperson for the company said, “It was a difficult step for robots, but this was made possible after experimenting with a number of prototypes.”

The spokesperson said this breakthrough could be applied to two-legged robots and would enable future robots to move over rugged terrain.

Toyota and its rival Honda have been studying robotics for many years; both companies are supported by public funds for their research.

GM-Nissan talks running on empty

Obvious: was it all a ploy by the evil genius Kirk Kerkorian to light a fire under Wagoner?

Two months ago, excitement swirled in the auto industry and on Wall Street about prospects for General Motors joining an alliance with Nissan and Renault.

But with a month remaining in talks between the three automakers, many industry experts now say they doubt any significant link-up deal will emerge.Better financial news at GM seems to have lessened the pressure on management at the nation's No. 1 automaker to do a deal, a move which was encouraged by the company's No. 1 individual shareholder, Kirk Kerkorian.

GM reported an unexpected profit, excluding special items, from its core auto business in the second quarter, as it trimmed North American losses by $1 billion from a year earlier.

"GM didn't seem very interested in the alliance. (CEO Rick) Wagoner made it clear it was forced upon the company," said John Casesa, managing partner Casesa Strategic Advisors. "I think events have lessened pressure on GM management, particularly the second quarter results they can point to as a sign their plans are showing improvement."

When the GM-Nissan-Renault talks were first getting underway, the idea of a combination was the center of attention in the industry. It even sparked talk that Toyota Motor Corp. might seek to enter its own alliance with GM.

But in the last two months, the talks have gotten relatively little attention, as officials with GM and Nissan refused to comment on the status of discussions during the 90-day review period, which started July 14.

Another Mercedes diesel to cooking oil conversion

Wichitan's Mercedes runs on vegetable oil
BY CHRIS SHULL
The Wichita Eagle

John Harrison drives barely two miles on his daily commute -- from his home in Sleepy Hollow to Wichita State University, where he teaches violin -- so high fuel prices were not the reason he decided to drive a car that runs on vegetable oil.

It was the principle of the thing -- that and to give himself something to do during his summer vacation.

"I've always been fascinated by cars, and I've always been looking for an excuse to work on one," Harrison said.

So after discussing things with his wife, Nicolasa, a bassoonist, he dropped $5,000 on a used Mercedes-Benz station wagon and $800 on a conversion kit so it would run on vegetable oil.

"We are concerned about the dependency on fossil fuels," Harrison said. "This is a renewable fuel. Vegetable oil is something farmers grow and can continue to grow."

Harrison installed the fuel conversion kit himself over the summer. The fuel-oil tank sits in the rear storage compartment of the 1982 Mercedes 300 TD.

Toyota Sets High Goals for New Tundra

Toyota expects to sharply increase its share of the big pickup truck market with the launch of the newly redesigned 2007 Tundra. "We're looking to double volumes and penetration," said Don Esmond, senior vice president of automotive operations at Toyota Motor Sales USA.

Bricklin Delays Plans to Import Chery Cars

Entrepreneur Malcolm Bricklin has delayed plans for a third time to bring Chinese-made Chery cars to the U.S., reports Reuters. Yesterday, Bricklin said his company, Visionary Vehicles, has "stopped officially taking money from dealers" until the joint venture with China's Chery Automobiles is signed, and will not begin importing Chery vehicles to the U.S. until the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009.

Bricklin had initially set a target of January 2007 for the first sales of the vehicles; he later moved back the date to the summer of 2007, and then again, to the end of 2007/early 2008. Bricklin says he has 50 dealers on board for the venture, and is planning to launch models priced from $15,000 to $45,000. He predicts the cars should compete with luxury brands such as BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes.

Toyota FJ Cruiser, Ford Freestyle Earn Top Rating In Side Crash Tests

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recently tested four 2007 model vehicles with side airbags: the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Ford Freestyle SUVs, Ford Fusion sedan, and Ford Crown Victoria family car.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser and Ford Freestyle both earned the Institute's top rating of "good" for protection in side crashes. The Ford Fusion was rated "acceptable," and the Ford Crown Victoria was rated "marginal." According to a release by the IIHS, performance in all categories (dummy injury measures, head protection, and structure) for the Toyota FJ Cruiser was "good" across the board.

Each vehicle's overall side evaluation is based on performance in a crash test in which the side of the vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph. The barrier represents the front end of a pickup or SUV.
